I just finished watching snippets of season 1 (defective DVDs) and I awww everytime Sookie is affectionate. I love that she calls out to Lane and Rory "Goodnight kittens!" and that she hugs Lane and calls her "chickadee." I don't think Sookie is always given the best lines ("off-wee"), but MM redeems them by her giddiness.

One of my favorite Sookie moments was when she and Lorelai are at Luke's in Cinnamon's Wake -
LORELAI: Life is a funny funny thing, huh?
SOOKIE: Yeah I love that Jim Carrey.
LORELAI: What?
SOOKIE: Jim Carrey. He's just -- he's just -- funny.
LORELAI: He is funny but I didn't mean funny, funny. I'm being philosophical.
SOOKIE: Oh. Very serious face. Jean-Paul Sartre.
Her face when she says "Jean-Paul Sartre" is one of the funniest things I've seen! I think about it now and I giggle.

One of my fav Sookie moments, too. I also love "what's the opposite of ennui? Off-whee!"
I remember the first time watching the show and seeing the best pal dynamic with Lorelai, and thinking I didn't like it because it seemed too much like "obligatory overweight best friend for the pretty girl" and having been in that position personally (though I'm no longer friends with said pretty girl or that overweight), it didn't appeal to me. I didn't think that for long because of the way the relationship was written and because Sookie as a character wasn't punished for being overweight. I really do just love Sookie for being the big goofball she is and now I think her flakiness and personality compliment Lorelai really well. And she's a redhead, so she's one of my people.

Sookie's a redhead? She looks so blond.
Melissa McCarthy is such an inventive actress. I love the scene in the balcony in "Concert Interruptus": "Yes, it is crazy, and, yes, you are jealous."

Question: Is Sookie's willingness/determination to open Lorelai's eyes about the L/L feelings ("you get really good service here" + "you were picturing him with a Lorelai Gilmore sort of pretty?" + etc.) based, at least somewhat, on seeing how he was with Rachel ("Luke is a good man" + "To Luke she was [Wonder Woman]")? I like this idea.

Ramdom comment: The other day at work, my boss (the same one who brought up Styx, REO Speedwagon and Journey - I forget which thread I posted that in) was telling us about his trip to Napa, and how he went to the CIA, and of course, we all do a double take, going the CIA!? and then he says "the Culinary Institute of America" and ohh man, how I wanted to crack up laughing! Naturally, Sookie came to mind first.
As for Sookie's encouragement of the coupling, I agree. Of the few snippets I've seen of season 2 from websites, (it's been ages since I last saw that season) one of my favourites is the scene in Runaway Little Boy, where Sookie is all "it's right there, look at him" or whatever it was she said. She was SO on the money, and I see Lorelai's discussion with Luke after that being based on what Sookie said. I think it was probably the first time Lorelai actually listened to her. she still freaked out of course, but I think she may have believed her that time.
Now I have to go post my theory in the LL thread.

I was a little put off by Sookie at first...she seemed TOO klutzy to be a chef (yeesh, what are this woman's insurance premiums?), but I have grown to love her over the years. I like that she has a life separate from Lorelai and that she married first. It was a great moment for all us zaftig redheads. I remember being shocked the first time I read or heard that Melissa is Jennie McCarthy's sister, because I think Melissa is so pretty and classy and Jennie. Well. Not so much. I hope we see more of Sookie, and not just her reaction to L/L (though that will be fun, too).

I thought they were cousins, not sisters. In any case, they're definitely related b/c Melissa used to work on "The Jenny McCarthy Show" a few years back. Not that I watched it or anything....was watching the E! True Hollywood Story on JM and recongized MM from a set taping.

That makes sense. I don't look like any of my cousins. They're both kinda perky though, huh?

Oops. my bad. Could've sworn they were sisters, but cousins makes more sense. In my family, however, we look alike. We don't have kids, we clone ourselves. Heh.
They're both kinda perky though, huh?
Yes, but in different ways. I feel like Jennie is always trying to out-gross everyone and Melissa doesn't.
Anyway. Back on topic. What is Sookie going to say about the L/L situation. She seemed to be a shipper, but I lost faith with the whole "Shel" debacle. Maybe she was trying to get Lorelai to open her eyes? But then, she
was short with Luke. Hmmm. It's a mystery.

Aug 31, 2004 @ 8:46 am
I took the whole Shel debacle to be because Sookie has long since given up on a Luke and Lorelai pairing. Anytime she has ever brought up the subject to Lorelai, Lorelai bites her head off. And as far as Luke and Lorelai getting closer this past year, Sookie has been somewhat distracted so it's a good bet that she doesn't really know.
Now she meets dorky Shel and wants to get Lorelai a guy, so she tries the setup.
My guess is that Sookie will be excited for Lorelai and Luke, and much less inclined to bring up the possible down-sides like Rory. Just all giggles and happiness.

Aug 31, 2004 @ 2:47 pm
Actually I didn't think Sookie was short with Luke, more like she just had no idea what the answers were to the questions he asked her, and she thought he must be stupid to ask her about tile and stuff. That was my first reaction anyway.

Heh. I read the WGUSPV thread and knew about Sookie offering to forge something, but my fellow TWoPpers, while lovely and oh-so eloquent, could not do the scene justice: swooping in out of nowhere, "I'll forge that for ya!" "Thanks!" and exit screen was HI-larious. I <3 Sookie.

I hope so... She found out she was pregnant in late October. So, she should technically give birth sometime in July. I'm not sure how that'll fit in. Maybe the new season will start with Sookie and her new baby. Who knows, especially since this is all in Stars Hollow time.

Hah. I just watched the season 5 opener.
"So, how was it? Was it on top of a table?! Because I always thought it would be on top of a table!"
I'm sorry, that is just too funny. I love Sookie. She is such an amazingly funny character. It took me a moment to process the implication that Sookie had been imagining Luke and Lorelai having sex. And she is perfectly okay with that. LOL.
And you guys are right, she really has lost a lot of weight. Good for her.

I just had a thought about the "Was it on a table?" comment. Maybe it's not that Sookie's been thinking about Luke/Lorelai sex so much as she's been thinking about Luke sex. Sookie wants a piece of The Flannel.
And yes, Miss Steph's WTF fics have been rubbing off on me.

I feel so lame asking this, but is this the first time Sookie was pregnant? Did she ever have a miscarriage or another baby that mysteriously disappeared or something? It just seems like a million years ago that she got pregnant, but it was only October with this kid. I'm sure my mental timeline is just off, but I thought I'd double check. (It's been driving me nuts.) Thanks! :)

ejw878 Sookie and Jackson have a son together already. His name is Davey and even though it seems like he should be on the back of a milk carton because we never see him - he was born in season four (Festival of Living Arts).
I think we've seen him several times this season also. TCaTT, Women of Questionable Morals - and then one I can't remember the exact title of - Jackson was pushing him in a stroller and making jokes to Lorelai about how it was a boys night out on the town.

I don't have a problem with the name Martha. (It's far better than Colgate Kumquat, that's for damn sure.) The "feh" was because I was so pissed at the episode that I didn't feel like investing more energy in the debate over That Poor Child's name.

The only problem I can think with Martha is it's really old fashioned. Not as bad as Agatha, which no one under 60 should ever be saddled with.
And, speaking of names, Sookie can't be her legal name right? Or, is it? Do we know what it is?

Is it just me, or is Sookie the most annoying character I've ever seen! I know she's Lorelei's best friend and all, but I could certainly do without her and Jackson on this show. I know they are supposed to be "characters", but that's just taking things too far. To me they are just annoying. The show would be better without either of them.

deadendangel, have you watched the show from the beginning? Sookie used to be really funny and bubbly without being over-the-top. Now she's just weird.

I've been watching some old seasons on DVD trying to get through the summer. I love all the colorful Chef coats that Sookie wears. Does anyone know where they get those?
Or do we think they are a WB wardrobe department exclusive?

With the exception of the chef topper, I can't believe no one has mentioned Sookie's clothes! From the perspective of a fashion designer (moi) she has the best plus size clothes I have ever ever seen, and she wears them spectacularly - of course I'mc ertain they are fit to her bod and maybe even some of them are specially made for her, but man, that's a fabulous wardrobe!! Wish I knew who did the wardrobe.

Is she Sookie St. James Melville or Belleville? If I were her, I'd keep my maiden name, too!
I really enjoyed Sookie in TPDR. She's been a bit annoying and shrill lately,
so it was nice to see her return to form as Lorelai's supportive best friend and a foil to Jackson's silliness.

ITA. Thank gd ASP wrote this episode. I was getting seriously annoyed with the last few Sookie episodes...like she was just stuck there for show but really not written well as her character- she became more like a caricature, especailly her and Jackson at the dinner at her house "Turn the television off Davey!"
Okay, now I really want to hurt whoever wrote that episode, and whoever was on the team of writers who DIDN'T step in and fix that. Where was ASP or her assistants?

Or, like millions of other women around the world she decided to keep her own name--just because (not necessarily because she was known by her 'maiden' name). It's her name, why should she have to change it. Sorry, my own issues here...carry on.

Why can't Sookie and Jackson move far far away from Stars Hollow? My god I hate that woman, she is so whiny and Jackson isn't any better. Never in a million years could I see Lorelei being friends (and partners to boot) with her. I think the show would be a million times better without this character (that goes for Michelle too or however you spell his name).........
