Elliot
This show really makes me laugh, and I'm glad to see it back. Jon Cryer's really beginning to shine in his role. And Charlie Sheen did a great job with the "I can't have her, which means I don't know how to talk to her" dynamic. I was waiting for him to ask when her next birthday is, but better off that he didn't go there.

Tour de force for the maid too (forgetting both her IRL and character name right now).
AgentX
Last night's show was spectacular.

Each time they ran into the glass I laughed hysterically. The one thing I can't shake is that every time Jake comes on the screen, I keep thinking, when did they learn how to stop time and get Fredrick (Frasier's TV son) to play this role.

BTW, She was supposed to be 16??? How come there weren't any 16 year olds like that in my High School?

I don't remember the character's name but I think the maid is played by Conchata Ferrell.

I also thought last night's show was funnier than it has been in the last while. I thought the Dear Prudence reference was funny, although I'm not sure what the average age of the viewing audience is and if the younger members would get the joke. For anyone who doesn't know, just in case, it's a Beatles song, I think from The White Album.

The character's name is Berta.

I didn't care for this episode at all. I think the show is becoming more one-note and forced each week. For example, what would be the BFD about the maid's sixteen year old granddaughter sunbathing in front of an eight year old or however old he's supposed to be? Seriously, they live in California, surely the kid's been to the beach?

I don't know...it started out pretty funny, but it's losing me more each week.
RainIsBeautiful
Last night was the first time I've seen this show -- and I can't wait to watch again next week! It's about time Duckie got his own (successful) show! :)
Elliot
I think that Prudence (ironic name for the character, and I got the Beatles reference too) was flirting pretty much throughout, including while sunbathing...and that's probably too much for a ten-year-old boy...not to say I wouldn't have been thrilled if there was a Prudence around when I was ten.
fonemonkey
I love that they're bringing Conchata Ferrell in as a recurring character. She's hilarious. Charlie Sheen is terriffic in this show. Way better than his last one. Appointment TV, fer sure!
Josette
. For anyone who doesn't know, just in case, it's a Beatles song,

I got the reference. It was funny because I thought, "No, you twit, that was about Mia Farrow's sister". I don't think I've ever actually heard the song, but I'm always hearing how it was written about Mia Farrow's sister Prudence after their encounter in India.
Elliot
Can't say that Monday's ep was among my favorites, but I've been pleasantly surprised overall. However, I think the show will have to show further character development or the introduction of additional characters (with staying power) fairly soon to remain viable.
Warden
Richard Lewis always cracks me up. His little example with the water and the cup was priceless. Looks like he lost weight though. Everybody can relate to money problems at one time or another. It's funnier though when it happens to Charlie.

Was it me or was that lady Charlie met in the supermarket kind of doing a Price is Right imitation when she was holding up the cheese and the vodka?
fonemonkey
This has to be my favorite sitcom on right now. Anybody know if it's being renewed for next year? CBS was promoting it during the SuperBowl, so I guess that's a good sign.

Loved the part with Richard Lewis.
Elliot
If it's indeed true that it's the most-watched new show (or new comedy or whatever the promo says), one would think that CBS wouldn't mess with success, unless it's to anchor an hour or night. But many stranger things have happened.
nerdyduck
It has been renewed for next season.

I liked this episode. I love how they have this continuity of the brothers' unstable relationship with their mother. And I think Rose is hysterical.
Elliot
I thought this was an "off" episode, but what I do like is that even what I believe are "off" episodes are very watchable, and that there are good things (like Rose) to be found there.

The writers have managed to flesh out the characters and main series storyline much more effectively than I would've guessed...which would explain why an "off" episode or two wouldn't appreciably harm the series. Things don't seem so desperate, as in the case for shows that are struggling to gain a foothold, storywise.
BoE
I thought the episode ended a bit abruptly, but overall I enjoyed it very much.

Charlie Sheen and Jon Cryer have great chemistry and are perfect in their roles, though I'm not sure Charlie's role is that much of a stretch for him. Hee!
Warden
Jenna Elfman playing a psycho mom. Not a bad job. She did look damn sexy beating that car with a baseball bat. Looking forward to next week's ep.
ChinkyGirl
Did anyone but me think this episode was a bit off? I was dying to find out Jenna Elfman's big secret and then <plop!> it's a kid! Followed by my worst enemy: the "To Be Continued" ender...

And the preview for next week was kind of weird - it seemed like they were bringing Jenna on for good as Jon Cryer's love interest with all the kissing and "You're gonna get laid tonight!" I dunno...an odd episode for me..
Elliot
I also felt the episode was a bit off, but Jenna Elfman has always left me feeling that way, so I can't say it was the writing! Charlie Sheen got to show off his acting chops a bit, so I'm not complaining. Jon Cryer almost always gets an A+ from me.
BoE

I've never understood what the attraction is, but yeah, even I have to admit that she looked damn good last night...and this is coming from a married old lady.

The episode was a bit uneven, but I laughed through most of it, so it's all good.

Charlie Sheen's facial expressions were priceless.

I missed Jake this episode. Usually I can't stand the kids in sitcoms, but I love Jake.
Mrs OldManBalls
JE ruined it for me.
Elliot

He's not a cardboard cutout, but a kid who can actually act. Reminds me a bit of Randy (real name "Jonathan Taylor-Thomas"?) from Home Improvement.
ChinkyGirl
I cringe thinking about when Jake gets a bit older - he just won't be as lovable! I still remember when the show won best new sitcom on the People's Choice Awards and he said, "Soon, it will be Three Men!"
Elliot
I hope the Jenna Elfman Extravaganza is only a two-parter...unless there's a true WTF moment lurking in there, I don't see how this storyline could extend past another half hour without getting annoying.
JackiFL
Word, Elliot. Please tell me it's over now? Cannot take much more of her "look at ME, how quirky I am, see how cute QUIRKY can be!" attitude. It would be easier to take if I knew she was actually acting.
Warden
I've heard of men becoming women but not the other way around.

"Well, good luck with the ...penis."

"Poker buddy?"

"Used to." And don't call me buddy.

Teflon balls. You learn something new everyday.
Elliot
OMG, how funny was this tonight? The writers were REALLY on their game.

And do we have a continuing storyline?
nerdyduck
It's really good to see Chris O'Donnell again. Tonight's episode was very funny.

Teflon balls. You learn something new everyday.

True, yet very disturbing.
ChinkyGirl
This was certainly a very unique story tonight...I've never seen my dad cracking up so hard! But it was still very weird...Mom's sleeping with someone you slept with? Very soap-opera-like...only, not ;D

But we needed some Jake tonight! Imagine explaining that to a kid, lol.
BoE
"Well, good luck with the ...penis."

I couldn't believe some of the lines they were getting away with. Absolutely hysterical. Everyone's reactions were so funny and dead on. I do hope this is a continuing storyline.
Rinaldo
So is this was Chris O'Donnell's career has come to? I hope his character continues a bit here, I enjoyed him.

I especially like how Charlie Sheen was weirded out by this, but not excessively or obnoxiously. He saw the cosmic humor in it all, had no problem still being friends, and overall reacted about the way a real-life sensible adult would, while still bringing the funny. Lots of good lines; kudos to the writers.
TGC-64
I missed the first part, so I thought the "gag" was that Chris was gay and had come out to Charlie. Chris was great in staying on the knife-edge between comedy and bad stereotyping.

Everyone was wonderful, and I hope they let this play out, Chris has great rapore with the entire cast.
Elliot
I wouldn't even know HOW to stereotype a woman who undergoes a sex change...but I agree that CO'D -- and the writers -- did a great job of making the character real.

Speaking of both realism and knife-edges, I've got to give CS a ton of credit for consistently nailing his character's position on the fence between adult and manchild. That type of character can become a caricature SO easily, but CS has managed to make him multilayered and easily believable. He has a totally warped idea of what "scandalous" means, but it's his own definition and it doesn't waver. When actually faced with something he actually deems "scandalous", he first tries to distance himself from it, then comes to a wary acceptance of it whether he understands it or not, all while remaining somewhat paralyzed when dramatic consequences of the scandal unfold themselves in front of him. Fantastic.

I am always surprised that I like this show so much. Consistent laughs through the whole thing. I was never a Charlie Sheen fan and didn't know who Jon Cryer was, but they are a great comedy duo. I watched this show right after an episode of ELR which barely made me smile.
royvac
Wow! I guess I'm the only one who likes this show. Holland Taylor was superb as asual. Alchoholic mothers have become cliche these days, but I still found her funny. "How long did I sleep?" and "That clown has no legs!" cracked me up.
Warden
Teri Hatcher is still hot as ever. I can't believe Lois & Clark came out over ten years ago. Sisters are always competing no matter how well they say they get along. Turns out in the end they were all bluffing. Too bad. It would have made for great plot development. I would have settled for a scene with them smoking a cigarette afterwards. Ironic, isn't it?
Elliot
Evidently there are plenty of people who like this show, me definitely being one of them, but I guess it's not the kind of program that generates buzz or controversy. I'm not really into Judith or the guys' mom, but the guys themselves are fantastic, as are Rose (though I really hate clowns!) and the cleaning lady (what's her name?).
nerdyduck
Count me in as one of those who likes this show. I love Berta (that's the cleaning lady's name) and Rose (although I have this fear of clowns and that really scared me tonight). I thought tonight's episode with Judith and her sister fighting was funny. And Teri Hatcher looks great. And I really like Holland Taylor tonight. "Some of us like to deal with boredom the old-fashion way." I couldn't agree more.
mbridgii
I usually don't watch this show, switching over to "Half and Half" after ELR. But since they've been in reruns for what seems like infinity, I've been watching.

I could really see myself watching this show more. I saw the first two episodes and thought it was an easy way to revisit "The Odd Couple", but I really think Cryer and Sheen have great chemistry. I'm still not a fan of the boy (who I think is too old to act as childish as he does sometimes) but since he's mostly a minor character, it's OK.
ChinkyGirl
I was just thinking, Charlie and Alan's characters are set up in such a way that some women will inevitably be sick of Charlie's playboy act and will fall for Alan instead. And it will always lead to Charlie thinking, "WTF?! What about ME?" In fact, it's happened several times already (Teri Hatcher, Jenna Elfman) and it's sure to be a recurring plot device for this show.

Not that I care, mind you - as long as the show remains funny, I'm still on board, recurring plots and all :)
mbridgii

The thing about it, though, is that Alan is just too involved. Whereas Charlie is the ultimate non-committal bachelor, Alan will be involved in everything. He's the type of guy who will actually have an opinion on the color scheme at the wedding; Charlie, on the other hand, may actually forget what day it is and go play golf instead.

But it does make for an interesting show.

My PC is in the room where the TV is and my Dad watches the show, so I was listening while fooling around on the computer and I found myself really cracking up at some of the dialogue. Like some people said, I never was a Charlie Sheen fan at all but I'm surprised how much I've laughed at most of his lines. Everyone had great lines tonight. I don't know if this was a new episode or not since I just really "listen" to it now and again when my dad is in here watching but I just heard one of the funniest lines of any show in quite a while. The guy's housekeeper was saying that one of her kids once:
"Ate a whole can of Play-Doh;finally pooped out an ashtray. That's the day I quit smoking." Ha! That just killed me. She just deadpanned it too, so it made it even funnier.

Oh yeah, if Sheen wears shorts and is sitting down in a scene, someone should really tell him to um...keep his legs close together because I could clearly see his tighty whities. What? I couldn't help but see!
Warden
Did they just change the intro or have I not been watching lately?

Hair on the testicles. Post its on a penis. Were those really necessary.

Instead of paying $175 an hour for a shrink, they could've just spent $1.99 on a bottle of prune juice.
Elliot

That was the first time I saw that intro (perhaps news of renewal went through?). And those lines were pretty consistent with those in other eps, I thought. They weren't necessary, but my wife and I cracked up for both.

I still can't believe that the show has the legs it has demonstrated. I'm thrilled that its ratings are good.
BoE

Maybe not necessary, but they sure as hell cracked me up, so I'm glad they were there. I'm constantly surprised (in a good way) by some of the lines that this show gets away with.
maryellen3159
How 'bout the line...(Paraphrase) I'd rather not have cheese
that's dropped into third world countries.
Elliot
Nobody's posted about last night's episode yet?

I enjoyed the episode ALMOST as much as I usually do. There was just a bit too much Heather and too little Alan and Jake. It's the chemistry between the stars (and the maid..."Roberta"?) that makes this show work.
JuliaGulia
I think it's just "Berta." And I agree, the cast has great chemistry.

I always forget this show is on, mainly because I always have tons to do on Monday nights, but when I watch it, I enjoy it. Unfortunately I missed last night's episode.
ChinkyGirl
Anyone else freaked out by how haggish Heather Locker looks? When she was coming on to Charlie, I was scared for him!
BoE
Anyone else freaked out by how haggish Heather Locker looks?

Freaked out right along with ya, ChinkyGirl. And WTF was up with her hair?

I didn't think the episode was one of their best, but I always find something to enjoy. The last two (?) scenes where Alan is chasing Charlie in and out of the house cracked me up.

Word on the chemistry, Elliot, but for the 100th time, the maid's name is B.E.R.T.A., though you're getting closer with "Roberta." ;)
Elliot
Evidently I'm giving you something to do, BoE, so I wouldn't want to ruin your online experience by getting it right! :)

I know that this is a TV show, but Heather Locklear's conduct is an exaggerated but pointed example of what scares me about dealing with lawyers. I should've become one, if only so that I could be on the other side.

I'm missing Rose...and BERTA.
