You know, I think CONNIE AND CARLA might be a lot of fun - I laughed at the trailer several times. Of course, one of my favorite movies ever is SOME LIKE IT HOT so this little homage to it warms my heart. Plus, I love drag queen bars - yes, it's true - and campy humor so color me there. And I do love me some Toni Collette, ever since she came from a little town in Australia called "Porpoise Spit", actually (MURIEL'S WEDDING)...

The movie does sound fun and I love Toni Collette. Why couldn't David end up being her character's romantic interest. That other actress got the chance to make out with John aka Chris "In the Morning" Stevens/Aidan "He did her floors" Shaw Corbett.

Just poking my head in (but I did read back in the thread) to ask if anyone's heard more about this:
The House of D: NY Radio Station 107.5 FM reports that on the set of the David Duchovny directed film "The House of D," R&B singer and now actress Erykah Badu apparently had a major physical fight with actress and Duchovny's wife Tea Leoni.
Lauri
Mar 24, 2004 @ 4:38 pm
I found this which debunks it:
Badu baffled...Here's the text:
R&B star ERYKAH BADU is confused by reports she and actress TEA LEONI
had a violent scuffle on the set of their new movie HOUSE OF D - because the
pair weren't even in the same country at the time of the alleged brawl.
Reports recently surfaced on a New York radio show that the ON & ON singer
and Leoni got into a fistfight after Badu became irate over a trivial argument.
According to the report, Badu had to be restrained after repeatedly punching the
JURASSIC PARK III star in the face.
But Badu's representative, WENDY WASHINGTON, blasts, "This story is pure
fabrication. It's completely unfounded!"
Washington says that Badu shot her role in the film in August and September of last year (03). Afterwards, she left America and toured in Europe for the rest of the autumn.
She adds, "The timeframe in which the report said this occurred doesn't even
add up. Erykah wasn't even in the country. Besides, she had a great working
relationship with Tea and everyone else in the film."

I know it's probably not true and all, but, in my fantasy, Erykah and DD started a torrid affair and Tea only found out because she found one of Badu's famous headwraps stuffed between the cushions of his trailer couch. She tracked the "Tyrone" singer down and jumped her in the parking lot, threatening to choke her senseless with said headwrap, even snatching her baldheaded if she ever comes near her man again. Badu mouthed off with a "Please! He's my man now!" to which the scrappy Tea finished what she started:

I'm not sure why I was reminded of this, but a few weeks ago I was watching the Futurama DVDs and one of the commentators was talking about auditioning actors for the part of Bender, the robot.
(paraphrasing)
Commentator (possibly Matt Groening): We thought of several actors who we thought would be good as a robot. (Pause) David Duchovny...
So funny.

you know, even though i abhor all kinds of violence and do not condone violent sport as entertainment, i would pay good money to see a Badu/Leoni fight. there may be a tangible height difference, but apart from that they would be pretty well matched and might end up pretty much slugging it out.
i do think, however, that Leoni would probably just turn around and say "the bastard was unfaithful? have him, i'm done." and then Badu would be all "i was never much into trailer sex anyway, see ya."

David was very cute on Leno. Did two segments. Spent the first one discussing House of D, and how he's fighting the MPAA for a PG-13 so they've had to tone down some word play things, such as Kochukokov, which NBC actually bleeped the dozen or so times he and Leno said it.
The second segment he discussed the new movie and said it was nice getting back to Vancouver to film it after five years away and he really likes the city and may end up buying land there. He mentioned living there someday but I couldn't tell if that was a riff or not. The property thing seemed genuine.
No mention of the family (and he was not wearing his ring for folks who pay attention to that). He wore blue jeans, a white striped oxford (two buttons undone), and a chocolate brown blazer. Hair was a bit shaggy. He looked good and rested, a little bit fuller-faced, and clean-shaven.

Re: the wedding ring, there's really no rhyme or reason to when and where he decides to wear it, as far as I can tell. There's an audio interview floating around now from last weekend where he talks about Tea and seems to be very enamored with her, it's quite sweet actually. (I remember people saying right after they got married that it would be over within months. Well, it's been seven years, so I'd say they're definitely beating the Hollywood odds!)
Lovely interview on Leno; typical DD humor. He was freakin adorable holding the baby bears. You can tell he's an animal lover.

Tribeca treats
Fest to preem 'Kitty,' 'House,' 'Demme'
By DAVID ROONEY
The Tribeca Film Festival has announced a lineup of 65 features for its Spotlight, Showcase, Restored & Rediscovered and Midnight sections, with premieres including Ed Burns' latest, "Looking for Kitty," David Duchovny's directing debut "House of D" and John Walter's humorous docu-tribute, "In Search of Ted Demme."
The program was announced by Tribeca fest exec director Peter Scarlet and by fest co-founders Robert De Niro, Jane Rosenthal and Craig Hatkoff.
"The festival's lineup offers a tremendous opportunity for discovery -- whether it's glimpsing a debut film by a promising new talent, being among the first in town to see the latest work by one of the acknowledged masters, or finally catching up with a classic in a pristine new print," Scarlet said.
Newly introduced Spotlight section aims to mix groundbreaking films from new talents and seasoned directors.
Burns' Gotham-set story of the bond between a high school baseball coach and a down-on-his-luck private investigator stars the director with David Krumholtz.
Duchovny also works both sides of the camera in his emotional fable
about a man trying to resolve the turmoil of his present relationship by looking to the past. Robin Williams, Tea Leoni, Erykah Badu and Frank Langella also star.
<snip a bunch of stuff>
The Tribeca fest runs May 1-9.

NickChick, what new movie was he discussing? The Connie and Carla one? I know it wouldn't be a new XF one (I KNOW that -- unless they have a time machine), but I heard "new movie" and "Vancouver" and I accidentally got all excited for a second. As An Amoeba -- yes, the Connie & Carla film -- they shot it in Vancouver last summer. No mention at all of a possible XF sequel, dagnabbit.
As for change in style between Vancouver and LA -- I saw it. The thing that glaringly stood out for me was that the actors always looked shiny/hot, like they were still dressing as they had in Vancouver without taking into account sunshine + temp increase + Kleg lights = sweat.
He mentioned that he'd been sort of blackballed in Vancouver because of his comments to Conan about the rain (but he slid right past the whole moving-the-production thing) and he figured buying property was the only way to make it right...

Apr 6, 2004 @ 9:02 pm
I one hundred percent absolutely feel that the show became slicker, shinier, brighter, sunnier, flatter (visually), more antiseptic, more celebrity-laden, a completely different color, and altogether less atmospheric the very instant they moved to L.A. DD did have a point that he'd been promised a move after ONE season and after five he got tired of being put off. So I understand the reasons for it. But I don't have to like it. I always feel sad when I watch the L.A. episodes. I know just about zippo about the nuts and bolts of television production, but it's one of those things where you could tell they had an entirely new crew, even if you weren't exactly sure what those people all did -- you knew they did SOMETHING, and suddenly whatever they were doing, it was being done differently. The Vancouver episodes just have a moodiness and a quietness that the L.A. ones never did, no matter how many rain machines and night shoots they had. Plus, it didn't help that they immediately gave GA a trendoid haircut/makeup and started dressing her all fashionable 'n stuff.
That said, I always thought it was a bit ludicrous that DD, while he did make some legitimately quoted comments about Vancouver and the rain and so forth that maybe weren't politically wise (not that he ever worries about that, which can be both a good and a bad thing) (and GA made some of those "it rains a lot" comments too -- because, Lord, it DOES rain a lot, and they stood in it, a lot), took the most shit for what he said on Conan. Because it was a funny bit. It wasn't a spontaneous complaint. How do I know it was a bit? BECAUSE THERE WERE COSTUMES. AND PROPS. Yeah. He was trying to put a lighthearted spin on it, which I thought was a great way to deal with it, and nobody got it. And let me tell you that it was always a MASSIVE pet peeve of mine when DD would do some asinine interview, people would bitch about it, and the DD-oriented folks would sigh long-sufferingly and say knowingly to each other that those who objected just weren't SMART enough to UNDERSTAND David. A MASSIVE pet peeve. No, MASSIVE. But in this case, I think it's actually accurate. I mean, there was a guy in a bear suit dressed as a friggin' Mountie. Unless I dreamed that part. But there were definitely costumes, and I think a guy pretending to be the mayor of Vancouver or something, scolding DD. That sort of thing.
(And no, I don't think people thought the guy in the bear suit was real. But I do think they thought the setup to the joke was. He was participating in an exaggerated, self-deprecating parody of his previous complaints, not actually complaining.)
So, yeah. I get why they moved, and even though I wish DD hadn't put his foot down, I can understand it, I guess. But it bums me out. Because it may have been better for them in L.A., but it wasn't better for me, man.
Um, sorry to ramble. Lost in the memories. <g>

The difference between the Vanoucver seasons and the LA seasons is pretty obvious: instead of constantly visiting the midwest's mountainous pine forests, M&S constantly visit the midwest's deserts.
After the freak-out about DD's anti-Vancouver comments, DD and GA always seemed to bend over backwards to compliment the city whenever they were interviewed about the move.
Interviewer: So why is the production going to L.A.?
DD/GA: Although Vancouver is a wonderful city, and beautiful, and has perfect weather, and great actors and crew-people, and excellent coffee, and some tasty Thai restaurants, and not too much traffic, and no one spits, and the streets are self-cleaning, and it discovered cold fusion, and God went to college there, and its yellow sun gives us superpowers... well, L.A. is just home to me, you know?

[OT]What I'd like to know is, where are the Indian food places in Vancouver? When I visited last year, there was one Indian food place in Gastown near the ferry landing that I wanted to eat at, and although the joint was empty, because I was alone, they wouldn't let me sit by a window (they're upstairs overlooking the street), so I left.
I didn't realize they were almost the only Indian food place in the city. I was so happy to find a takeout place a block behind a Safeway in North Vancouver that it had to do.[/OT]

I taped it and just watched it. I thought it was pretty adorable, I must say. I liked it more than the Leno interview (thanks,
AlejandraDD!). He did a funny dance to "Secret Agent Man," told a cute story about his daughter, actually mentioned the possibility of an X-Files movie (!!), did a trick with his dog Blue (whom I was absurdly happy to see), and had his ass commented positively on by Ellen. (And rightly so. Nice jeans. Slobber.)
Then again, there were no bear cubs. But you can't have everything.
I imagine it will be up on

I have to say, the movie doesn't look that exciting. I'm sure I'll see it, eventually, but I'll probably end up skipping it in the theater. Thanks in advance, Netflix. <g>

I'm here to add that it was funny as hell, the dancing was pretty sweet and yes, they made a big deal about showing his ass off - works for me! I was also psyched to see Blue there, I'm such a geek.
He also talked about West and Kidd/Miller (I think we go with Miller but I can' keep up) and how West is such a busy 5 yr old that when David tries to make a date with her for some play time, she'll say something like "I'm so busy - if I have time!" Yeah, I was too busy grinning to remember exactly but the clip'll be good. Then the whole 'Spay and Neuter' as kids names, which I liked.
Oh, and the crouching M/S photo from S2 or 3 and how DD thinks thats a stupid position for FBI agents, until Ellen says they're getting ready to pounce...love. it.
And the Movie!! He said its in the works! (I'll believe it when I'm in the theater dude.)
ETA-there are a lot of Indian restaurants on the west side (like around Kitsilano and 4th Ave.) and also in 'Little India' (duh) which is not very well known as such to visiters. Its in the 40-ish blocks out on Main and they have awesome places, plus great fabric stores. Sorry you missed some of those, but I'm sure North Van was good.
