ETA: I just found out that my videostore has its own website, and naturally I went there to check out what X-Files material they have (that is natural, yes?) and I found one entry that I didn't understand at all.
"The Unopened File" from 1995, starring GA and DD, directed by Howard Gordon:
"The resarch of agents Mulder and Scully leads to something that might be an alien vessel that's been buried for decades. Thriller that has not been shown on TV. "
It's probably just a few eps put together, maybe with some extra material, but I'm still stumped.
Who knows anything about this?
It’s one of those ancient UK releases of X-files on video - before they started to release the complete seasons, isn’t it? They were mostly a collection of two or three mythology episodes.
I think ‘The Unopened File’ contained ‘Anasazi’, ‘The Blessing Way’ and ‘Paper Clip’. It also fits the timeframe. Now - they didn’t really find an alien vessel that had been buried for decades, but Mulder found a boxcar full of (possible) aliens that had been buried for decades – so maybe?
I have a question about Scully in ‘The Blessing Way’: When she comes home to her mother crying – she says: “Oh, mom... I've made a terrible mistake. Dad would be so ashamed of me.”
It never made any sense to me. What did she mean do you think? What terrible mistake did she think she had made?
That she let Mulder go alone, so that he was killed and she wasn’t there to help and protect him?
That she didn’t follow FBI protocol/orders, and as a result was suspended and may loose her job?

is it not that she believes Mulder to be dead AND that she has lost the Navajo code DAT tape from the Thinker?
i love Blessing Way - if only because it leads to Paper Clip. "I was a dead man. Now i'm back." back when it meant something. good times, people. good times.
Live Bait
Jan 2, 2004 @ 11:22 pm
But why would she think that loosing the DAT tape was her mistake? If Mulder hid it, and it was gone when she looked for it – how could she think that was her fault?
It just sounds as if she thinks she did something really terrible – and I can’t understand why. She was truly wonderful in ‘Anasazi’! Mulder getting more and more paranoid and Scully cleared him of everything: saved him, shot him, drugged him, and drove him to New Mexico! I mean, really, Scully in ‘Anasazi’ is my hero!

Thanks, Live Bait, I thought it was something like that. Actually, the store doesn't have the film in question, so I can't check it out, which of course makes me wonder why they have it on their website in the first place. Maybe the store is run by 1013.
I don't remember the details from The Blessing Way well enough to have much of an opinion. I think her crying was slightly puzzling to me too, but I just went with it. She's upset. OK. On with the story.
I do that when things get confusing. It helps.

I was just watching my new Season 3 dvd's and on the Extras disc, there's a deleted scene that follows this one and clarifies her meaning. Scully basically has a crisis of conscience and questions her actions to date, saying, "I lied and I countermanded my superiors because I thought that the pursuit of the truth was more important." Her mom tries to reassure her, telling Scully that her father would have been proud of her.

Thank you, ampersand. It sure would have helped a lot if they had left the scene in! :-)

I agree, Live Bait. The same deleted scene also has an argument between Scully and her sister, when Melissa insists that she can feel that Mulder is still alive. Not only is it a nice bit of characterization for both sisters, it also helps to explain why Scully later tells Teena Mulder that her son isn't dead and will be found soon.

Are those "Euro-scenes"? I know some shows have extra scenes that are deleted in the US viewing but not in the European versions, since you need to make more time for commercials (I think).
Both those scenes feel very familiar, and I haven't yet seen any XF on DVD.

No, I don’t think so, Kanel. I’m watching the European versions too – and I have never seen those scenes. Not on television and not on the bought VHS tapes (UK version).
I don’t have the DVDs yet either, but season 3 is definitely one of the first I’ll buy: 3 Morgan Darin episodes, Oubliette, Pusher, Wetwired… That is one excellent season!

Just watched Anasazi/Blessing Way/Paper Clip last night on a mini marathon. Damn, I'd forgotten how good those eps were. It had really been a long time.
You know, when Darin Morgan was working as story editor, there were very few continuity fuck-ups. Granted, there wasn't as much story to keep straight back then, but hey, after watching those episodes, you don't get the impression that the 1013 writing process was analogous to my mother walking into a room, stopping and saying "Wait. Why did I walk in here again? Where was I going? Shit, what day is it?"

i watched Jose Chung's the other night, and when it got to the part after the MiB have visited Scully's hotel room and Mulder is under his suit jacket on the couch and Scully wakes up fully dressed and answers the phone then says
That was Detective Manners. He said they just found your bleeping UFO.
i laughed out loud because
a) of the title of this thread, and
b) she looks so very beautiful and sexy with her hair all carefully mussed.
i think that must be my single most favourite shot of Scully, apart from "just pick up the phone and make it happen" in the film.
and, let's be clear, i'm not into chicks.

From the same season, how about, "There are hits, and there are misses, and then there are misses"? She's smilling when she says it, which was rare back then. I've always thought she was very pretty there, and I am also not into chicks.

I was watching ‘Quagmire’ the other day, and confirmed that, yes; it’s still one of my favorite episodes. It’s funny, scary, and sad (poor Queequeg!). It’s got an obsessed Mulder with a reluctant Scully on his heels. And it’s a really nice homage to “Jaws”.
But, I was wondering about this:
MULDER: Hey Scully, you think you could ever cannibalize someone? I mean if you really had to.
SCULLY: Well as much as the very idea is abhorrent to me, I suppose under certain conditions a living entity is practically conditioned to perform whatever extreme measures are necessary to ensure its survival. I suppose I'm no different.
MULDER: You've lost some weight recently haven't you?
SCULLY: Well, actually I have, thanks for... (she glares at him)
… does anybody have any thoughts about what he meant by the “lost some weight recently” comment? And why Scully glared at him?
Did he imply that Scully lost weight – “as an extreme measure” – to ensure survival and procreation? Or what? And Scully was offended why exactly?
I just don’t get it! Anybody?
snarkcake
Mar 7, 2004 @ 12:55 pm
I thought he was sizing her up in case he was the one taking the extreme measures to survive. It took her a second to realize it wasn't a compliment so much as a tease. Very effective Mulder snark.
If there was a in-joke about her losing all the baby weight between S2 and S3, I wouldn't be surprised either.

It's possible it's a meta-moment and that he's referring to her losing her pregnancy weight, but I think it was supposed to be a "Mulder sizing Scully up for potential cannibalization" joke...
ETA: snarkcake and i think alike, posting essentially the same thing at the same time...

I've been watching S3 for the past couple of weeks, and all of my favorite episodes from the season are by Darin Morgan: Clyde Bruckman's Final Repose, War of the Coprophage, and José Chung's From Outer Space. He also wrote Humbug from S2 and played the lead is Small Potatoes. According to the
IMDb he hasn't written anything since 1998. Anyone know what happened?

It may be only idle gossip but I've heard he suffers from depression etc. that limits his creative output. Sorry, but I can't even remember where I heard/read that - some XF place, obviously...

And all the seven existing seasons on DVD.
Would it help if I told you Darin Morgan was in several crowd scenes in Seasons 8 & 9 but his face is too obscured to clearly make out? Or that, behind the scenes, he was solely responsible for cleaning Mulder's abandoned fishtank? Or that, unbeknownst to most fans, Morgan even took on the pivotal role of Mulder's nameplate in PATIENCE?

See, I knew that nameplate looked familiar.

I thought actor Darin was brother of writer Glen. Was I wrong?
Kanel
Jun 7, 2004 @ 8:12 am
Yes, Darin and Glen are brothers. According to my Official Guide (seasons 1 & 2), Glen was the co-executive producer, as well as writer, first, then Morgan got the part of Flukeman, and after that initiation he, too, started writing for the show. And the rest is history.
Oh, Glasgow, now look what you made me do. I shouldn't have to look stuff up, I'm on summer vacation!

That's right, shouldn't you be out pickling herring and conquering the Arctic?
Btw, I hear from an online friend that Swedish newspaper, Espressen, ran an article recently about DD wanting to work on a Swedish director's new project. It's called Derailed based on the novel (thriller) but according to IMDB Clive Owen is slated to star.
Just to be clear - and in front of the various witnesses here assmebled - if you look any of this up it's not because of me...

I got caught up watching "Tunguska" and "Terma" on TNT (Mulder and Krycek play with handcuffs ;) and quickly saw that the opening credits were altered (i.e. The Truth Is Out There was something else) but I didn't catch the explanation in the episode (or didn't pay close enough attention) -- is there still a site somewhere that explains the credit alterations and which episodes they appeared in?
ETA -- Excellent, Live Bait! Thank you! Unfortunately that one isn't explained on the season 3 in-joke page. Cheers for the link, though!

Hey! I just saw "Quagmire" on tv the other night (I saw it once before, lonnnnng time ago) and it was awesome! :) It was a bit weird and oddly alluring watching Scully as a dog owner... and I don't even know what I mean by that. It just was.
(Hope this episode was from the third season! If not, I suck!)

I felt so bad for Scully in Quagmire. Damn her luck. Her dog gets eaten. Her life sucked.
Season 3 is the second best season. The Mytharc made sense still, and the MOTW episodes were very good.

- J.T. Walsh - the ultimate H!ITG in The List
- Firefly's Jewel Staite (as the kidnap victim) in Oubliette
- Kurtwood Smith in Grotesque
- Lucy Liu in Hell Money
- Charles Nelson Reilly, Alex Trebek, and Jesse Ventura in Jose Chung's 'From Outer Space'
- Stargate SG-1's Amanda Tapping (as Skinner's dead hooker) in Avatar

You know what's funny? As much as we constantly make fun of 1013 for hitting the bong so damn much, I honestly have never thought, "Wow, this show is made by a bunch of potheads" until I saw QUAGMIRE the other day.
First of all, I never even knew this was a comedy episode. (All I really remembered was that Moby Dick conversation) How did I miss the fact that this sheriff is hilarious? He's better than Luke Wilson!
Secondly, the teenagers who are licking frogs on the dock are the same kids huffing methane in “War of the Coprophages…” They keep getting high and people keep dying in front of them. HA!! I laughed for about 5 minutes when I noticed this. (I dunno, maybe you guys all knew this already and I’m just really, really slow) It’s so much funnier b/c they don’t point it out.
I think my favorite part is how absolutely unmoved Mulder is by Queequeg’s death. He says "sorry about Queequeg" (totally insincerely) ONLY b/c he has
just enough social skills to realize he should. HEH! But he’s practically foaming from wanting to talk about the Sea Monster, so he watches her carefully, trying to gauge whether or not it’s OK to change the subject…. And he totally does it way too soon! HA!!! Mulder has crappy social skills. :) I love the looks they exchange when Scully says she wasn’t listening to him… He’s so clueless and she’s totally thinking
God! You’re so clueless! Will you just SHUT UP?Even on the rock, when Scully’s suddenly all, "poor Queequeg!" Mulder gets this look like,
Aw, crap, this stupid dog again. I have to say something nice or comforting or something. At least he comes up with something to say. :)
The funniest thing in the whole episode though is
Scully's reaction to the pegleg comment. hee!

I concur on the QUAGMIRE love (I know...I know...what episode DON'T I love, right? I must admit the ones I don't like are few and far between) - especially the fake-out ending. You can see it coming a mile away but it's still great...

quagmire is one of my favorite episodes of all time. my favorite scene (besides when they're "stranded" on the lake) is this:
MULDER: I'm sorry about Queequeg. You know, I think I've learned something from these photos.
SCULLY: Mulder...
MULDER: (Goes over to her, and points out sighting locations on a map.) They're not pictures of the lake monster, they're pictures of the lake. Locations where the fish has been sighted over the past several years. Look, five years ago, all the sightings occured in the centre of the lake. But progressively the sightings have moved closer and closer to shore, until this year, they're practically on the shore.
SCULLY: Could you repeat the last part again? I kind of faded out.
MULDER: Which part?
SCULLY: After you said I'm sorry.
MULDER: Can you drive a boat?
who else would respond to someone's grief over their dog by asking them if they can drive a boat? i laugh every time.

The best part is, in Darin Morgan's WOTC script, they're called Dude, Stoner and Chick, and in the
Quagmire script, they're still called Stoner and Chick (AKA Freebird & Moonunit). Amazing that they kept THAT continuity...
