Article in the Herald-Sun about its success in the UK. I understand the link is time sensitive.

Now the show is screening around the world, including New Zealand, the US, Canada, South Africa, Ireland and Scandinavia.

I assume it's cable in the US, Canada etc. not NZ. Does anyone know? Just curious.

Edited because 'its' is not 'it's'.
The Source
Does anyone else think they are/were kind of overexposed? They are great performers and i thought they were funny at the logies but i am sort of over them...its probably just me

I discovered this show on holiday in Aus over Christmas. My best friend (also English) insisted I watched the DVD and I was hooked within the episode. It takes a little time to get into the flow of things (cultural references being what they are and all) but once you're there, it's hilarious. I'm moving out to the Hunter Valley in July and can't wait to get this all the time! In the meantime, I plan to turn as many friends as possible on to it.

My favourite bits? The way there's always something wrong with Sharon; a horrible rash, an injury of some sort, and no one EVER asks her what's happened. Self-obsessed much?
babybluez
The girls are back! I thought the premiere was hysterical. Funniest bits:
  • Kim's ultra-short mini skirt and ugg boots - that's so her
  • Mick Malloy wandering around in Kath's kimono
  • Instead of having a Marilyn Monroe/Audrey Hepburn etc. bag, Kim had one with her face on it
  • When Kath and Kel decided "going steady" was okay with them and Kel put on a Danny Zucko jacket and got on the ride-on mower and Kim had on a Sandy outfit (with a visible hickey) and stood outside smoking and eyeing him lustfully
  • Kim throwing the dog poo over the fence - juvenile but hilarious
Nikkei
Loved the race day episode. Especially the Rachael Griffiths bits.
ChocolateCherry
I live in the United States so I've been watching the episodes on Trio. I'm glad that a lot of the jokes are Australian(read:Inside jokes) because I was worried I might be a little slow. Despite that fact I watched each episode in season 1 twice (they premiered them as marathons), but when Kim destroyed Brett' table in Season 2 I had to take a break from the show. I wanted to haul off and smack her, even though she's not real. Is this a normal feeling?
Francie
Everyone wants to slap Kim - that's normal.
Sharon's Netball show will be on the ABC tonight.
foster duckwort
I watched the Great Last Ametuers. Anyone else? I liked it. But thought it would have more Sharon. I also got a bit bored, but I blame that on my being a basketballer.

I'm going to live in Vermont next year with a host family. As part of my present to them I'm taking the season 1 DVD's. And the Priscilla, Queen of the Desert and Strictly Ballroom ones. They so won't get it.

HELP! I need a tape of the last episode with Kylie Minogue. If any one would be willing to send me a tape I would be over the moon. My email is in my profile, let me know what you would need in way of costs etc. Thank you.

raenm@hotmail.com is my addy if you can't be bothered looking in my profile.

The first series of this show has finally turned up on the BBC in the UK, so we're pretty far behind, but I love it already. I really like the details, like Kath and Kel's hideous matching jumpers and Kim's constant snacking. And poor Sharon, with her little injuries and her enthusiasm.
Promethea
Ooh, isn't it great! "Look at muh Kim, look at muh, look at meeee". The cast are all brilliant.

I particularly liked in the last episode that Sharon is, in fact, rubbish at netball. Did she even get the ball once? And yet it's her life. Damn, though, I'm still bitter she didn't meet up with the guy who liked her, thanks to bloody Kim.
Libellule84
So, did anyone watch Da Kath and Kim Code?

I thought Michael Buble was great in it, but Barry was a bit disappointing...

Loved the twist of how Kim got into the Da Vinci pose!
wradjri
Poor old Barry, as he gets older he just really can't manage to pull off not seeming like Dame Edna (sorry I am sure that I could have gotten out of that sentence without so many negatives). It was a great show, and as someone who has never even sniffed the DaVinci Code, I still seemed to get a fair bit out of it.
holeybubushka
I've been making my mother tune into "House" instead of "Kath and Kim" but after the "Da Kath and Kim code" I've finally come to the realisation that Kath and Kim is so, so much better. No offense, Hugh Laurie!

How satisfying is to finally have an australian comedy that's actually funny. When's the last time that happened?( and no, "Neighbours" and "Home and Away" don't count.)
Libellule84
I know what you mean, wradjri. I've read The Da Vinci Code, but apart from the bits at the beginning & end, there weren't too many references to the book. The obvious one was Barry's albino monk, based on a character in the book (Silas?), but generally it was K & K as per usual...

It was great to see Sharon standing up to Kim a bit, even if the overall 'Marryat' story was awful...and somewhat nonsensical.

I thought the Pru & Tru bits were great, and loved the references to the new Workplace Relations Legislation.
dirksunboy
Man, I'm bummed. I'd been watching these on Trio, but now that network is going away and now Kath & Kim will be on a channel I don't get where I live...bummer.
Angora Deb
You mean you're leaving Trio, or Trio is leaving everyone?

Oy'd keel to see the new ones, or Series 1 again for that matter. I think Trio showed up to the end of 2. (Trio is a little-carried US digital cable channel with offbeat programs.) Oy want to see how Keemay's faring as a mum.
dirksunboy
TRIO is going away. Only going to be available broadband online, or something like that.
Angora Deb
Yis! Sundence Chennel syves the dy! And no commercials. (I take it there are no ads in the original?) But can someone antipodean explain "cactus hour" and the restored Victorian restaurant tram?

I usually want to smack Marion even more than Kim.
purist
I can't remember them saying 'cactus hour' - can you give me the context?

The restaurant tram is real. Melbourne is blessed with trams as part of its public transport network, and the vehicle in question is an old-style Melbourne tram that has been tarted up and turned into a popular tourist attraction. It trundles around the city streets every night, usually packed with people. I've heard that the food is pretty good, if a tad expensive. For more information, click here.

Everytime I see Pru and Tru, I can feel the jokes flying over my head, what is so funny about these two women, what are those accents all about, is this an australian thing?

I did love the last show, especially the parts set in the future, when they talked about "Dame Rachel Hunter". Hysterical.
secretagentman
NBC is doing an American version. I hope it's as good as the office and not bad like 'Coupling'.

Prue and Trude are caricatures of a certain type of Australian woman who most likely lives in a wealthy suburb such as Toorak, South Yarra or Malvern in Melbourne, or on Sydney's North Shore. Her husband makes a lot of money in his job, her kids go to private schools, in the winter she goes skiing or to Noosa (in Queensland) and she most definitely votes Liberal (Australia's conservative party). She's probably working in the homewares store for a bit of extra cash and to get a staff discount on the merchandise. The accent is a slightly exaggerated version of how such women talk.

The shop itself is a thinly disguised version of an upmarket homewares chain called Minimax. I've been to those shops and the women who work there are just like Prue and Trude! The story goes that in real life the women who work there stopped wearing aprons and headbands after the first couple of series of Kath & Kim. Hee.

I adore Prue and Trude and would be happy to see them in a spin-off series. 'I think there's some jojoba left over from October ...'

It's funny--I've never been to Australia in my life, don't really know any Australian people and don't know the first thing about Australian social culture, yet I've been absolutely MAD for Kath and Kim since the first time I saw it. I LOVE Pru and Trude, I LOVE "Lookit mway, lookit mway...", I love the way Kath and Kim dress, I love how everyone is so convinced of their own hotness...even though there are cultural references that fly over my head (inevitably), I just love it. I think that American suburban culture has a lot of silmilarities.
alanr
thanks purist

It's really interesting how the stars sometimes play other supporting roles, Jane Turner played the jockey in the episode at the races. Gina Riley played the director of Kath's play. Magda played Brett's mother. Didn't Brett play the tuxedo rental guy in an episode?
purist
Didn't Brett play the tuxedo rental guy in an episode?

No, the tuxedo rental guy was played by Mark Trevorrow, an actor/singer most famously known as his alter-ego 'Bob Downe'. You can see Mark in this pic of some of the K&K cast (he's at the back, next to Gina) with Matt Lucas from Little Britain. According to the article, Lucas will guest-star in an episode of the next series. I can't wait!

That's fantastic, Aja - we Aussies sometimes wonder whether the humour of K&K will translate outside Australia. I know the series is very popular in New Zealand and the UK, whose national senses of humour are quite similar to Australia's - but the US is a different kettle of fish. For me, one of the main reasons the series works is that it has a good heart. It's like the films Strictly Ballroom and The Castle - it mocks its characters, but it does so gently and in a rather 'loving' way. All the characters in K&K - with the exception of Kim, who as far as I can see doesn't have a single redeeming quality! - are actually very sweet, and as a viewer, I want them to succeed.
Aja

I agree totally! My heart just broke when Kel went to his meat convention (or whatever it was...I've only seen the series once and it was a while ago) and everyone ignored him. I mean, who doesn't know someone like that...someone who is genuinely sweet but just...awkward? I love how Kath and Kel are just always so relentlessly positive about EVERYTHING. And the self-absorption of Kim's character is what makes her so hilarious...we all know someone like that, too, and the usually have some inexplicably woshipful hanger-on like Sharon. (I also love the occasions when Sharon grows a set and stands up to Kim. Magda is fantastic.) I have to say that my favorite bits, though, are the end credits, when Kath and Kim are sitting out in the back garden talking about something totally ridiculous. Those two actresses are phenomenal.

I don't think Kath and Kim has really found an audience in the States, but that's probably just because it has never really been shown properly. Americans (at the risk of generalizing and opening myself up to a world of pain) tend to not be as receptive to shows that don't feature American actors doing American things in American places with American accents. Actually, to be fair, it's probably more the network powers-that-be who think that way. I do think that there is a huge segment of the population that would adore Kath and Kim, if they knew it existed!
alanr
The best part of the show is the total lack of vanity in the actors. Kim's half shirts and thongs. Kel's jogging outfits. Sharon's various skin disorders. Kath's crowning glory. And the whole episode where Kath and Kel go nudist. Aye carumba, TV doesn't get funnier than that.

Alas, I could never imagine botoxed, egotistical American actors going to such lengths for a laugh.

Snerk. As someone who is "guilty" of living and working on the North Shore, I can certainly vouch for the existence of Prue and Trude's out there. If only they made me laugh as much as those two ladies do...

I have to admit it - Kim is my favorite character. There is something about her self-absorption that I find utterly hilarious. If I had a daughter like that...well, I don't want to imagine having a daughter like that. But as far as fictional characters go, she's the one I can't get enough of.

Wow, I'd never heard of this until now! Very interesting. I personally haven't found any American version of an original British show funny (yes, that's right, I'm including "The Office" in that statement) so hopefully their "Kath & Kim" will be different. I don't have high hopes, though. I don't see how they can remain faithful to the Aussie original and have it appeal it to a large American audience at the same time, though I'm certainly hoping to be proved wrong.

Oh, big fat word, alanr! The parts that make me laugh so hard it hurts are when Kath and Kel shake their thangs on the dance floor, and when Sharon riverdances in that horrible green velvet dress. Genius.
sleepingruby
I agree, their willingness to look ridiculous is part of what makes this show work. But I have the most admiration for Gina Riley, any woman who will go on a talk show, or to an awards show with her bum crack and muffin top hanging out for all the world to see is increadibly brave. I know she's playing a character, but it's still her body that's on display. I think it shows a complete lack of vanity on her part, and I love that.

I went to school with girls who do Irish dancing (its quite big here) and they all have a variation of that dress! Its hysterical!

Just have to chime in here to say I'm another Yank that loves this show and who is also completely ignorant of the more subtle "Aussie" jokes -- never have been to Australia (altho' would love to) and many references pass me right by. But this show is so funny that it transcends all the cultural references! The 2 main actresses are incredibly talented, funny and brave (they do seem to have no inhibitions about their bodies!) and I also think that the world that they show does bear a lot of resemblance to U.S. suburbia.

I almost hope that they don't attempt to do a U.S. version of this -- I think it would be pretty much unrecognizable and without the two leads, I just can't imagine it working. And let's face it, most of the U.K.'s (and elsewhere) shows that come to be translated in America are way, way below the level of the original -- and I do like both versions of "The Office" alto' the U.K. version remains the classic IMO!
Laurie
Ooh I didn't realise K&K had a thread! Yay!

I have to say, I do love Epponnee Rae - she's just the cutest kid. And when I'm foolish enough to have kiddies, I fully plan on saying "shoosh [child], its mummy's turn!"

Upthread, someone asked about 'cactus hour' - 'cactus' is often used (at least amoungst my group) to describe something that is either shite or not working - if something has "gone completely cactus", then you know its broken or gone bad. So 'cactus hour' is a really bad hour of the night that Brett is trying to avoid - i.e. when both Epps and Kim are whining and hungry!
Stinger97
So then, quick question - has Sundance effectively dropped the show, or are they just on a break? I heard so much about Kath & Kim from family in Australia, and when the show finally came to the states, I didn't realise it. Then I caught the Kylie Minogue episode, and was excited that I would finally get to see what all the fuss about. And now the show isn't on Sundance's schedule.

Blargh.

I love this show. I got to hear about from my Sister when she lived in New Zealand. So when I saw it on an obscure sattelite channel up in 300's (FTN) I had to which. Since then it has been promoted to a better digital channel (living) and finally bbc2.

When ever I shopping with my Sister we often lapse into going 'thats noice' 'thats reallly unuusual' plus with the occaisonal 'your'e a total hornbag'.

So, I just read in another thread that there's a pilot script for an American version floating around out there.

I wish they'd realize that it would just be less expensive, and sooooo much better to air the original version. (Or just dub it with the voices of famous American actors, the way they do with "Spirited Away", "Princess Mononoke", and the other Miyazaki animated movies.)

Got a cute baby? According to today's Age, they're casting for Epponnee Rae:
STAGE mums are on high alert now that casting agent Cameron Harris is seeking a bub to play Kath & Kim darling Epponnee Rae, daughter of Kim (Gina Riley). The young actress should be 10-13 months and have a gorgeous round face, brown hair and blue eyes, and the stage mum shouldn't be too high maintenance (if that is possible). Cameron is holding private auditions to prevent frenzied queues of well-fed mums in G-string-revealing jeans snaking around Fountain Gate Shopping Centre. Can you imagine the ruckus: "Look at moi, look at moi, darling! Smile for the man! Now!"

I wonder what happened to the baby they used to have. She/he was adorable.
Laurie
The bub probably grew up too quick for the show's 'timeline' - I assume this means they're making a new series?! Or a least a special?

There was talk of a movie, wasn't there? Hopefully it means a fourth series. Gotta find out whether Kim and Brett get back together or not!

Ooh ooh! Goss and pictures today (sorry no linky) have Shane Warne marrying Sharon in the new series currently being shot!! huzzah!

So I'm just catching up on the news that Kath & Kim is leaving the ABC and going to Channel 7. Here is an article about the negotiations and how it all happened. This one, from the Herald Sun, has some statements from Kath and Kim and a few tidbits about the forthcoming series:
Kath and Kim said they were looking forward to returning to Seven, as its canteen food was far superior.

"Seven's promised us we're going to be in the stable and Kim belongs in a stable," Kath said. "We did our fair share of schmoozing. We were just entertaining CEOs with cardonnay and nibbles. I think when we got Kerry Stokes in the spa at the Buckingham and he was legless, literally – that was the clincher. They're paying us literally hundreds of dollars per episode. (The ABC) could only afford $10."

*snip*

The new series, screening later this year, will see the Melbourne suburban divas take a holiday to warmer climes and search for a school for Kim's "gifted" toddler Epony [sic] Rae.

*snip*

Confirmed guests for the new series include Shane Warne and comedian Matt Lucas from Little Britain. Other big names are being chased.

"We couldn't let Sharon near Warney basically because she just wanted to see his flipper and he didn't want to expose it," Kath said. [but see article below]

The would-be empty-nester said the celebrity she would most love to meet would be Chris de Burgh. "He won't return my calls," she said. "Maybe it's because I called him Chris de Bird. Maybe he was offended."

Kim said she would like to diversify into a Jerry Springer-style show, while Kath planned to go on Dancing with the Stars "as Pauline Hanson".

Regular cast members Magda Subanszki [sic], Glenn Robbins and Peter Rowsthorn also will return for the fourth series.

Re the Sharon/Warnie wedding, I found this article and pic. Extract (spoilered just in case):
Warnie weds sporting tragic Sharon Strezlecki, played by Magda Szubanski, in the next series and filmed his romantic turn at St Kilda's Luna Park in Melbourne yesterday.

The cricket legend has been referred to as Sharon's "unrequited love'' in previous episodes, but in a plot twist, Strezlecki is forced to wrestle her "dream man" from best friend Kim Craig.

While the happy couple wore matching bridal whites during the hilarious ceremony, Kimmy, aka actor Gina Riley, told The Daily Telegraph the marriage was "a dream come true - for Shane, that is."

"He's really lucky to have met a couple of foxymorons like us,'' she said.

Following in the stilleto footsteps of Kylie Minogue, who walked down the aisle in the last series, Warne bowls Strezlecki over, throwing her an engagement ring instead of a cricket ball.

Producers had teased fans on the show's website with the promise of more wedding bells in the new series ("or was that the callipers from Sharon's clicky hips?''), but had hoped to keep Warne's appearance a secret. However, as filming began locals were quickly in on the joke and a show spokesman confirmed the happy news.

Another pic of the wedding is here.

And the Age had this snippet on 27 March about the new series:
KATH & Kim's hunka-spunk butcher Kel Knight, played by the equally meaty Glenn Robbins, is rolling out his tasty sausages for the next series, the crew filming at the Prahran Market while it was closed. Shaggy-haired chef Shannon Bennett, the whiz at Vue de Monde, was also seen in the deserted aisles, so it must mean he's making a cameo as a famous chef who stocks up on Kel's famous snags.

I'm home!!
I never knew a K&K thread existed. I love love love this show. Like some of the other Americans here, never been but I've always had a fascination with all things Australian. So then I'm flipping through channels a while back and find K&K(or did it find me?).

Some of my favorite scenes are at the close of each show where they are sitting outside chatting and usually reading a gossip mag and drinking a glass of kardonnay.

My favorite episode though is Kath and Kel's wedding. The whole plot was expertly written with the way everything tied together at the end. It had:
-Pru and Trude
-Baby Chesus, not baby cheeses!
-Drunk Kel
-Kim mixing wedding punch in a dirty trashcan
-Kath & Kel riverdancing

I love Sharon and all of her weird rashes, hives, wrist wraps, and such.

Thank you for humoring me. Mr. Snarla just doesn't get it.
purist
Hey, snarla. Good to know that the foxymorons' humour translates well to at least some Americans.

There's an article in today's Herald Sun about filming scenes for the new series in Queensland. Excerpts:
The girls from Fountain Lakes booked into the Hyatt Coolum resort, along with Kel, Bretty, Sharon and baby Epponnee Rae -- and they loved it.

"I've never been anywhere so ritzy before but Kel is doing very well at the moment in the meat industry," said matriarch Kath, in an aquamarine and lime patterned resort-wear dress. "We've enjoyed it so much -- Kel and I are reliving our honeymoon and we joined the mile-high club on the way up here on Qantas just like Ralph Fiennes."

*snip*

Meanwhile Kim, sporting blonde streaks, made a beeline for the buffet: "I'm so impressed with the bain-marie -- I had bacon, hash browns, baked beans, eggs florentine, I mean benedictine, all on the same plate. Now that's a holiday."

Kath interrupted to say her daughter has "stacked it on -- she's put on 5kg and we've only been here one day. And that muffin top of hers is turning into the Michelin man."

Should be good viewing once the series goes to air later this year. There's no definite release date yet.
Reny Sue
I'm just hoping it dosen't do what former ABC shows going to commercial TV have done and turn to suck.

Stinger97, Sundance did air their 90 minute movie a few weeks ago, Da Kath and Kim Code. Its based on The Da Vinci Code, (naturally), though of course Kath and Kim's shenanigans leave Tom Hanks in the dirt. Maybe this was Sundance's way to top off the season before we get the next one. Whenever that will be. Which better be soon.

Re: Sundance Channel

They seem to run "seasons" on their shows for half a year. Kath & Kim seems to be on the fall/winter(US) rotation. Right now they're running random Iconoclasts, Slings and Arrows, etc.

I was able to record all K&K episodes, but then our dvr went on the blink and I lost all my precious episodes. I'm hoping they make their way back to my tv again so I can record old ones as well as new ones. If not I'm going to have to hunt down dvd's.
alanr
According to my DVR, Sundance is running a K&K marathon July 1st, I miss my hornbags so much!
snarla
I just came in to report that I dvr'd four glorious hours of Kath & Kim today!!

I've been looking for them because they seem to be featured in the summer(US). I even got Mr. Snarla to watch the Pumpkin Carriage/Kath Sells Pyramid Lingerie/Kim Chats Online episode, one of my favorites. Ah, good times.

Sharon to Kath: "Oooh, is that REAL nylon?"
