The local commercial blocks make me sad... Indianapolis news.

You too?? I'm in Middletown! At least we've been spared from the Watson's girl and her skankihoohooness.
Isaboe
The Godfather Staples commercial was hilarious!
I agree! Didn't see all of JJs show tho'. Changed it before she was finished.

You know, with all these ads for erectile dysfunction going on, is there that many men with that problem? Or do they "think" they have a problem and just want to last longer? Can you OD on the stuff? Will Mr. Happy explode(not in a good way)?
reckless
Cialis.

The most unintentionally funny commercial ever.

Erections lasting more than four hours require immediate medical assistance.

LMAO.
Bach-us
The Lays commercial got a brief mention upthread about a page or two, along with the Butterfinger commercial original version.
DoctorNeon
I have it on tape, the Justin/Janet thing. I reviewed the footage, and I can confirm the appearance of something unscheduled.
Topic: Liking the Sierra Mist commercials. And the Chevrolet one with the El Camino/convertible type car. All the kids with the soap in their mouth. "Holy Sh..." and then they're sitting with the soap in their mouth.
MissTheLove
So that was really Janet's boobage? I thought it was just my crappy TV. So, are they pretending that it never happened or something?

The Sierra dog was cute at first, but it's starting to creep me out for some reason.
Zumanity
hagreene80, you're in Indiana? Get thee to the Indianapolis TWoPCon thread! We'd love to have you!

Hidalgo: mmmm...Viggo Mortensen.

Gillette was just...sad.
hagreene80
We thought the Gillette ad was going to be another erectile dysfuntion ad... "you're on top of the world...and then *raspberry*"
Jael
Poor Janet. That has GOT to be embarrassing!

The Gilette add - you can get all that from a razor? riiiiiight.

hagreene80, I thought it was going to be an ED commercial, too. Funny how my sense of disgust wasn't diminished at all by finding out it was a razor.
reckless
In the sports shows NFL topic, there's an extensive discussion of Janet's boobs.

And here are some links:

It didn't look like an accident to any of us - TImberlake reached up and pulled the cup off.

Topic - love the Clydesdale donkey!
Zumanity
Wowsers!
Jael
One question . . . if that was an accident, then why the star-shaped pasty? Was that just part of the underwear? Not that I want to see more, but I would think if the cup wasn't expected to come off, there would have been a regular bra under there or nothing at all.

You're right indybear, it did look like he grabbed it intentionally during the show, but I assumed it was an accident because of the look on her face and the fact that the entire stunt seems more "Li'l Kim" than "Janet Jackson".

Topic? The Little Donkey that Could is still my favorite.
cal331
Dislike: the NFL ref ad with the shrewish nagging wife for Budwiser. Ditto the 'rocket sled' for Bud Light. Women are bitches, or the butt (literally) of fart/poop jokes. I get it. Sorry for reading too much into it, but a little balance would help. Also, we're not the only person that Linux kid creeps out. I think he looks like a lil' Eminem.

Like: Clydesdale donkey (I'll join the club) and potty-mouth kids. That car was cool. I missed the first hour (missed no football action, apparently) and the halftime debacle, so I don't know about any other good ads. Except for the Sierra Mist one with Patton Oswalt - don't those grates blow up HOT air?

During the dog show on AP today a local pet shop ran an ad for pet accoutrements offering pet costumes that are sweet, silly or sexy. Seriously. I don't even want to think about the kind of person who would be in the market for a puppy bustier or kitty tap pants. Gack.
hagreene80
*hehe* Dale got busted!
Zumanity
This is really a one-note year for Super Bowl Commercials. I think this will be known as: Super Bowl XXXVIII - The year we saw Janet's Boobies.
Jael
That Bud ad was cute, but I thought it was going to be an ad for a car. I also thought he was going to do something stupid, like try on the lipstick, and get caught.
Zumanity
That was Dale Jr.? I'm sure I would enjoy these commercials a lot more if I knew the celebrity cameos!
violet1624
Simpsons ad? priceless :)
hagreene80
*LOL* I love the American Chopper guys... don't really care for AOL, but you gotta make money somehow.
Bach-us
Does anyone have a link to the Clydesdale donkey?
alikona727
Shards O'Glass Freeze Pops? BWAH!

They even have a Web site set up.
Stardancer2001
It didn't look like an accident to any of us - TImberlake reached up and pulled the cup off.

Methinks that was intentional. Remember the last line of Rock Your Body is "Bet I'll have you naked by the end of this song". I guess Justin wasn't lying! {;"D
thayet
From another forum:

http://www.users.muohio.edu/choongty/budwe...iser-donkey.avi

You need the XviD codec to see it, though.

He also has a list of other ads that he's captured here.
Stardancer2001
Enough about Janet.

My favorite commercials so far are:

The Lays Classic

The football players singing "Tomorrow"

The Budweiser Donkey

[NASCAR geek] You mean to tell me I missed Dale Jr?!??!?[/NASCAR geek]
reckless
As much as I hate the recent spate of Subway ads, the new one is great.

"Sorry, Wang Chung. No reunion tour."

Does VH1 know that?
VeronicaNC
[NASCAR geek] You mean to tell me I missed Dale Jr?!??!?[/NASCAR geek]

Yep, it was cute -- played on his image as a ladies man.
The donkey was my favorite.
reckless
Bud Light paintball ad:

Monty Python should sue.
reckless
Edited to delete double post.
nerdyduck
I thought they were okay, but not great. The Lays commercial was good and Budweiser is always good. I really like the one where the football players are singing "Tomorrow." But really, the Charmins and Levita was really....distrubing.

As for the halftime show incident, CBS is saying it was completely unintentional..
CBS Apologizes for Jackson's Exposure
JHeaton
So she just happened to have her nipple covered like that? Gee, how conVEEEEnient.

With the exception of the Simpsons MasterCard ad, none of the commercials really rang my bell. And was it just me, or did seem to anyone else that there were a LOT of CBS house ads?
reckless
So she just happened to have her nipple covered like that? Gee, how conVEEEEnient.

It's not a cover. As someone in the NFL thread (in the sports shows portion of TWOP) explained, it's a nipple shield. But the nipple is visible and pierced. So it's something she may not have been planning to reveal. There's a pic near the bottom of this link that shows everything:

MissTheLove
Still have major love for the donkey and Pizza Hut!Muppets.

Edited, because reckless cleared it up for us.
ajra
Thoughts:
  • The Simpsons and the NFL players winging "Tomorrow" were the best in my book.
  • Miss Piggy got a snappy haircut and out-acted Jessica Simpleton, though that's not hard to do.
  • Good to see Muhammad Ali making a little change.
  • The Gillete commercial had great visuals, but for a razor?
  • I think McDonald's took "I'm Loving It" a little too literally.
  • Cialis - "not studied for multiple attempts per dose" Ha! and Ew!
  • No Don Cheadle commercials. I would have gladly traded all of those AOL commercials, the Charmin ad, and the FedEx alien for the shortest Don Cheadle commercial.
Vermicious Knid
The theme for this years SB commercials appears to be 'poor taste'. Lighting a horse fart in a woman's face, the 7 year itch with a kilt, old people beating on each other for potato chips. Meh. Not many memorable ones. The clydesdale donkey was cute. Was that really Wang Chung in the Subway ad? It's hilarious that they had to produce a commercial just to explain their last ad series.

I got bored by the halftime show so I wasn't paying attention by the time Janet's boobage was flashed. But conveniently there's the intense discussion in the NFL thread under Sports Shows. This is why I love TWoP. One eagle eyed poster put up a link to a blown up version of the Yahoo! picture and it ain't a pasty-see reckless' link. She's got these enormous suburst piercings on both boobs.
JHeaton
Whoops, spoke too soon. The 7UP slam dunk ad was hilarious. (Yes, I recorded the games and am fast-forwarding through it to see the commercials.)
Lady Alys
I haven't seen anyone mention my family's favorite commercial of the night, which was the "It's a good thing 11-year-old Jimi Hendrix drank Pepsi, because if he'd drunk Coke he would have played the accordian instead of the guitar" Pepsi ad.

Some songs just weren't meant to be played on the accordian...
nichelle
Super Bowl Ads 2004

The above site has a catalog of SB ads, including those of 2004.
ajra
Forgot about the Hendrix ad. Wonder what would've happened if he'd stayed home and had Ovaltine instead...
LegallyBlonde
But the nipple is visible and pierced.

Well, I guess we've cleared up that 'surpise guest' hype.

It was something of a 'meh' year for commercials, but my favorite has to be the NFL "Tomorrow" ad. Jerry Jones doing cartwheels? Bwah! Perhaps you have to be a longtime Dallas fan to understand the true, disturbing beauty of that ad...
BlackBanana
Of course "Born A Donkey" rocked. Everything Steve Dildarian does is hilarious. The Bud lizards, the Rejected Ads on the Bud website, the old Little Caesars stuff... I'm telling you, the guy's not human.
cutecouple
The Pepsi-iTunes commercial was so underwhelming. But the contest's good.
Luban
Reckless (from a few pages back), thanks for confirming that Cialis really was warning about "four-hour erections" requiring "immediate medical attention"! I was just commenting about that on the NFL thread and was wondering if I had somehow misheard it. Checking the warnings on the Cialis site, I now know far more than I ever wanted to about "priapism"...

Levitra, you'll notice, avoids all of this grossness by running non-indicated ads, as Slate explains here. Give me a tire-swing double entendre any day!
Unlucky Bear
I also loved the Staples ad, especially when the Staples Goon demands a cream puff and the Head Nerd whispers, "Monster." Hah!

Liked the Simpsons Visa one, too, but the rest were varying degrees of suck.

Here's to Tom Brady, the Prettiest Quarterback in the NFL!
Lucky Bishop
Yes, it is. The original was done by a band called The Las (as in 'la-la-la').

The La's, yes, but [pedantry mode]they were called the La's because they were from Liverpool, where the local slang equivalent of "mate" or "dude" is "la'," short for "lad." So you might hear someone say "Where you goin', la'?" where someone from the states might say "Where you goin', dude?" This is also why their name has an apsotrophe, which would be grammatically wrong if it was "Las" as in "la-la-la." And yeah, "There She Goes" is about heroin: they never made a second album because Lee Mavers, their leader, is a big ol' smackhead.[/pm]

Favorite ads: Chevy soap in mouth and, although I'd never drink the stuff, Pepsi's Hendrix ad.

So that Samuel L. Jackson March Madness ad where he was in the diner? Were my wife and I the only ones expecting him to yell "mm-MMM, bitch!"?
davidmello
I have to agree that the Budweiser "donkey" ad was the best of this year's lot, although I really liked the FedEx ad (I mean, was the alien from a planet whose invasion budget was 99 cents?). The MasterCard ad with Homer Simpson was great, too. The AOL ads weren't bad, but the third one where the "top speed engine" turns a car into a time machine was the best.
But one ad aired in Sacramento that got my interest. In it, some woman tried to get back at her boyfriend because he paid more attention to his Toyota truck than her. So, she makes a videotape to her boyfriend where a friend of hers pushes his truck off a cliff..and it lands right side up with little damage. The sound of her yelling "no!" was classic. I don't know if it's running in other local markets, but it's certainly different.
Cleo256
The NFL "Tomorrow" ad was probably my favorite, but I loved the FedEx alien. There's just something hilarious about how these guys are just now finally seeing through the alien's carboard mask disguise.

The one I hated the most was Mitsubishi's "See What Happens" ad. I call foul. It's bad enough when a commercials cheats and runs its second part later in the game, but insisting that we go online to see the rest of the commercial is a delay of game penalty. Plus, we know its a Mitsubishi ad, so I wonder which car will come out ahead? Must be the Chevy, right?

So...football is to hard-on as baseball is to a flaccid penis?

Shut up, Mike Ditka. Don't mock the sport I love. I like football well enough, but don't make me choose.
Senor Audacity
Off-topic, Zumanity, ITA. And not only does Johnny Depp deserve an Oscar, I think he'll win.

Cruddy year for Super Bowl ads. Liked the ones for Budweiser a lot, especially the one with Little E and the lipstick and the referee. Bud Light's, however, are not only tasteless, they're insulting. I fucking hated the dog biting the preppie's balls and the farting horse. I was eating when I saw those. Is Budweiser and Bud Light such diametrically opposing beers that Anheuser-Busch feels the need to style completely different TV ads for them?

I liked the Simpson Visa ad; in 30 seconds it was funny in a Simpsons kind of way. H&R Block's Willie Nelson ad was funny, and Don Zimmer's surprise cameo was the clincher. The Pepsi ad featuring Mo'Nique was good, too. And I think the Pepsi download ad was cute. Come on, the RIAA are suing teenagers for hundreds of thousands of dollars. CD's are ripoffs, and if I weren't so scared of technology, I'd be downloading songs like a motherfucker. On the flip side, I have no use for the ED ads, and I'm most disappointed with the Lays commercial. They needed 60 seconds to play out a real fight between these elderlies.

After every Super Bowl I like to check what a focus of group roped together by USA Today thinks was the best commercial, and invariably they disagree with me. This year's no exception. The best commercial, according to USA Today's Ad Meter? The crotch-biting dog. And the farting horse came in fourth. God, I fucking hate people.

One more thing: Is there voice-over work Samuel L. Jackson won't do?
gondee
Okay, I'm going to say it for all the low-brow people on TWoP (do those exist? Heheh.) I loved the horse farting ad. It made me laugh like you wouldn't believe. For what it's worth, I love the Seinfeld episode where Kramer feeds the horse baked beans as well ("RUSTY!"). Something about a farting horse = instant classic.

The ads this year sucked pretty much, I thought. Why did the anti-smoking venue get to air ads and yet other "issue" oriented ads got canned?

Favorite ads: 1) Horse farting 2) Dog biting crotch 3) The AOL American Chopper guys' ads (I love those guys) 4) Lays commercial with fighting old people. Most of the other ads I thought were pretty mediocre.

Least Favorite Ads: 1) Staples Ad - artsy for no reason, and not that funny. 2) Fed Ex ad featuring alien - dumb. 3) Chevy Aveo ad where basketball players go into car - I believe they were trying to joke about how big the car was, but I wasn't sure, which made me hate the ad.

Weak year for ads, luckily the halftime show will be what everyone is talking about this year.
davidmello
Word on what Senor Audacity thought of the absurd result from USA Today's Ad Meter results. Still, it brings up an interesting fact about TV viewers: people will say a dog biting some guy in the crotch is classic TV, yet are scared of Janet Jackson's accidentally exposed breast.
Sheesh!
