I am now proficient in drinking shot glasses of fruit punch from the blade of our longest bread knife ... whee!

Never let it be said that you don't learn new skills from TV.

You never know when a skill like that may come in handy!

BWAH!! So true, so true:-) I will have to try this one for myself.

delta888 - Margaritas. Weird. I brought my immersion blender here, because although I like my margaritas with lime (fresh squeezed only, please), tequila, Grand Marnier (because we're out of Triple Sec), and salt, over ice in a margarita glass, Mr delta's parents (in particular his mother, who prefers drinks sweeter) prefer it with fruit (peaches, strawberries, etc.) and --ptui-- sugar.

See, that's not a margarita though (IMO). That's a... a.... tequila daiquiri. Yes. A tequila daiquiri.

Whether you fix it with mix or lime juice; whether you add triple sec, grand marnier, a little splash of your own "secret ingredient", or go a natural - that's not the important thing. But other fruit? No.

Actually, I just looked it up (I'm marketing, but in a food service industry, so i have fun books like "Food Lover's Companion: Comprehensive Definitions of Nearly 6000 Food, Drink, and Culinary Terms" lying around), and here's what it says:
margarita [mahr-gah-REE-tah]  A COCKTAIL made with tequila, an orange-flavored LIQUEUR (usually TRIPLE SEC) and lime juice.  The rim of the glass is traditionally dipped in lime juice, then coarse salt.  A margarita may be served STRAIGHT UP or ON THE ROCKS.  It can also be blended with ice into a slushy consistency.

No fruit.

Totally agree with this. I had a frozen margarita the othe rday that was so sickly sweet that I felt ill after it. Normally it's the tequilla that would do that since I can't do tequilla straight anymore (long story...but it ended up with be passed out in a friends bathtub...God wasn't there). Now Margarita's are the only way I can drink the stuff, but not if it's 80% sugar.

She's baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaack!

Heya, kiddies! Much to my chagrin (although of course, I missed all of YOU *backpedal backpedal*), I am in fact back from the Emerald Isle. Had a FANTASTIC trip, with just the right combination of (1) seeing friends; (2) boozing; (3) eating faboo food; (4) drinking; (5) travelling out into the country; (6) lushing it up; (7) shopping; (8) cocktailing; and (9) relaxing. Excellent stuff!

Being back, though? Not so much. I have about as much motivation as Flo to accomplish anything at all at this point. Good thing I've mostly been able to farm stuff out to others for the past few days (also a la Flo). YAAAAAAAAAAY, delegation!!!

How long is it till I leave for London again...?

[hi]

My take on Margaritas: No fruit. No blender. Yes salt. If it tastes good before you're 2/3 through, it's not a Margarita. Last 1/3 and second glass ... [smile]. The extra bit when the wife makes you finish the pitcher ... [not good again]. It's that middle ground that makes it oh, so worthwhile :")

Hey, have any TAR5 racers shown up in the boards yet to put us straight?

eta: Did you see what Chip had to say about Girlie Drinks on CBS.com?

You don't know me, but welcome back, whereverthefk!

Re: margaritas - I just don't like the taste of alcohol, so I only like fruity drinks that disguise the taste. My hubby makes me great strawberry margs with enough alcohol to get all loopy, and enough strawberry that I can drink them.

I have a question you all may be able to help me with. I'm travelling standby for the first time ever next week. I have tickets for a later set of flights, but need to arrive earlier (and you'd better believe I'll be pretending I'm on the Race!). What happens with luggage when you go standby? I don't want to check my bag through when I first arrive, because I won't be sure which flights I'll get. Can I just take it with me to the gate and ask them to check it there once I'm confirmed on a flight? And then I won't be sure if I'll get on the earlier connecting flight so will I have to try to retrieve the suitcase during my layover and re-check it for the next leg? It's a small suitcase, but just over the size they allow for carryon.

Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

Only fruit punch?

I can imagine this would only get harder with practice, kind of like when I practiced making fancy layered shots. Oh darn, messed that one up. Guess I'll have to drink it. Oh darn it again, gotta drink that one too. Better keep practicing (hic).

Absolutely. Make them check it at the gate when you're confirmed on a flight. If you check that bag ahead of time and then fly standby, your bag could arrive at your destination hours before you. The airline would probably just put it in their baggage room for you, but I like keeping as much as I can with me. There's always a chance that the stupid airline can lose your luggage when it's supposed to be on the same flight with you. Who knows what flight your luggage will end up on?

I have no faith in airlines to not make mistakes. They make them too often.

Guys, I'm in trouble. And no it's not tequila-related. This time. And that time, well, he deserved to be put out of the car. I usually don't act like that. Really.

But tonight, I'm rocking my infant to sleep, and I start telling him a story: "Once upon a time, there were 11 pairs of racers, and they traveled all over the world. They traveled by boose, by taxi, by plane and on foot. They had many tasks they had to do......" We made it up to the chocolate factory when the little tyke fell asleep.

I'm wondering if a 12-step program might be in order?
pseudostudent
Yes, you've got a definite problem. TAR should have never put your child to sleep. Seek professional help immediately!
BoDiva
pseudostudent, you're absolutely right!

By the way, if we are dimsum comming again, please contact me and I'll try to be more help.

Absolutely. Make them check it at the gate when you're confirmed on a flight.

If you do that, then can you only pack items that are approved for carry-ons? Because checking a bag at the gate means taking it through security, right?
TPorter2

Nah, you sound normal to me. Of course, I am a confirmed TARholic...

If I had a small child, I would totally be doing this. Hilarious! One of the things I used to do when reading to my kids is change up the story to see if they were still awake. I would be reading Little House on the Prairie, and suddenly introduce Luke Skywalker into the plot. If they noticed it, then they were awake and listening. If they said nothing, then I knew they were asleep.

Thanks, BoDiva, I'll take you up on that once I start planning! (BTW you & your cohorts helped plenty last time around.)

I'm sure you're right. I don't think I need to take anything on this trip that will be a problem, but I'll be sure to be aware when packing.

Thanks AlmondEyes

He's eight months old, so let's give him a pass. He's also the reason the mister and I aren't applying to race-- otherwise, we definitely would. I do have, however, a future kitchen-pass to fly up to TARCon.

And it was for this reason that I never really understood the book until I read it myself and kept waiting for the spaceships when watching the TV show. And I can only imagine what kind of dreams I had as a child when the last thing I heard before drifting off to sleep was something about a horse and a lightsaber...

TPorter2 and dawsnzchck, you crack me up. This is how my father read me books growing up (not so much as a way to gage awakeness, but because he got bored with Dr. Seuss.
Fields of Gold
Hi all, I'm back for my weekly check in.
Suzie congrats on the engagement, crazy times may now commence.
So, the other night I had a dream, and I think it was a great dream my husband, however, has been checking medical books since I told him. The dream was that we lived in this old church that we had converted into a house and I woke up one morning and all these people were milling about outside and as I am wondering what is going on, what do I see but a red and yellow flag. TAr had made our house a pitstop. I was sooo excited in my dream that I tried to call my friend and I couldn't. Now that is what I call an obsession.
Rachel RSL
This is probably something only the Canucks here will understand but one of the lawyers here just told me that he's got a meeting here in the office tomorrow morning with the lawyer who represented Paul Bernardo. That's just...ew! I realize that even the most heinous criminals are entitled to a lawyer but still...ew! What kind of sleazy person would agree to defend him? Just ew.
karatekate
For those of us not from the "icy north", who is Paul Bernardo?
piperdown
Here's an article on them here
Devichan
I recognized it, Rachel. Alas, true crime is one of my vices. All I can say is... hate to be that lawyer.
BhP
That's sick. But really the sickest part of it is the police incompetence. Police ignoring statements from victims. Assholes. Just like the police who investigated the Green River killings here in WA, who dismissed so much evidence and so many related murders because the "only" people involved were prostitutes.

I can understand criminal defense lawyers though. I couldn't do what they do, but without them the legal system would be out of control and lots of innocent people would be screwed. Unfortunately, some guilty folks benefit... but that's the price of trying to have a fair system. I'd rather spew my wrath and frustration at worthless cops than lawyers...
PButtercup
I have nothing against the lawyer that ended up defending him. The first one that hid the videos for a year and a half while they made the deal with the devil, that's a whole other story.
Rachel RSL
That's true. She gets out next year, doesn't she?
beezer
Does she really? Sick. But, then Canadian news can focus on the Vancouver killer pig farmer in the twisted serial offender category. Did they ever adjust the laws that let the government censor coverage of the Bernardo killings?

I remember thinking that so bizarre, just on the face of it, and then because it was covered right across the border, so it's not like Canadians couldn't find out.

And, from the episode thread, the classic Edmonton-area bumper sticker was "Jesus saves, but Messier scores on the rebound." - because I can't stand Gretzky getting credit for anything ;)
Mama Tiger
To change the subject entirely for a moment, Papa Tiger left yesterday to go start working in D.C. on Monday. So I am officially a "grass widow," I guess, to use an old-fashioned term.

So what did I do? Went out and bought a new TV to replace the one he STOLE from me, that sits next to my desk so I can watch my TAR videotapes any time I want. How dare he? Interfering with the obsessed -- never a good idea!

And today we'll see if anyone in my office has killed any of the lawyers yet. The movers show up at 9 am to start hauling all the office stuff out of there to our new digs, so what does one of them do? At 4:30 yesterday afternoon, he gives his secretary the results of his finally getting around to cleaning off his desk, or enough work to keep here there late into the evening -- when he so far hadn't even given her a chance to start packing her desk area yet. I can't wait to see how mad she still is this morning, cause last night I thought she was going to start throwing things at him!
Loraxe
I finally catch up on the thread to find you all discussing Paul Bernardo. I am sure we Canadians can better take up the thread time talking about what we are going to do this lovely long weekend.

I made it back safely from Kenora. Northwestern Ontario is gorgeous and friendly, even the bears. Go there, enjoy it.

I am just full of orders today aren't I? I missed you guys more that I would have beleived while I was gone, but now I am off to Montreal for a week. Congrats on everyone's news, and I am so sorry about your cat M.Darcy
AnneH
Welcome back to Slowville (stouffville) Loraxe!

My boss knows Bernardo's 2nd lawyer and he says the only reason he took the case was to give him the best defense possible to ensure that he had no grounds for appeal. He (the lawyer) couldn't stand to see the girls' families go through a second trial.
PButtercup
Glad you had a good trip, Loraxe. Have fun in Montreal. I am off to Trenton for the long weekend to visit my parents. We are going to the Bancroft Gemboree - Bancroft is famous for gemstone deposits found in the area.

Good luck with the move Mama Tiger! They're always a chore. I hope you got yourself a nice TV. I treated myself to a PVR to celebrate the new TAR season.
labral
Congratulations Suzikins!! Have you decided on a date yet? Any other details?

In disqusting news, this am, I let the dogs out. When I called them in to get their breakfast, neither dog came. My male is usually at the door begging to come in. So I think "hmmm this is strange", put on a hooded sweatshirt, and go outside to get them. They had caught a rabbit and were eating it! ewwwwwwwwwwwwwww
Fortunately, my bf is a vet and he calls me every morning on his way to work, so I asked him what I should be worried about and it sounds like not too much. But still....gross.
Loraxe
Hey, my parents live in Trenton too! Well, Carrying Place. Cool, are you from there? I am actually headed to the Glengarry Highland Games tomorrow. A whole day of bagpipes and beer, what could be better?
Suga Wuga
I'm still reading the Bernardo story (this is my first time hearing of it). This is some sick stuff.
PButtercup
It's a small world! My dad was in the air force and we were stationed in Trenton in the 70's (we actually lived in Brighton). Then they moved back there in the late 80's just before he retired - I followed them later from Nova Scotia. At lot of people hate bagpipes but not me - must be the drop of Scottish bood I've got or growing up (partly) in the Maritimes.
Zron
My dad was in the air force and we were stationed in Trenton in the 70's

Where else was he stationed?

(I was in Chatham NB 70-75, Bagotville 75-78, Comox 81-83)

Long weekend plans? I'm taking the kids to Upper Canada Village Saturday and Sunday, camping out Saturday night. Monday, we're going to Kingston to go sailing with a friend.
PButtercup
Where else was he stationed?

We were in Summerside 64-68, Baden-Solingen 68-71, Trenton 71-77, Summerside 77-84, they were in Bagotville 84-87 (I never lived there) and then back to Trenton. Oh the life of a miltary brat - travel and see the world - all before you're in Grade 1!
Loraxe
Is Upper Canada Village so good now that it takes two days or is there something special going on? I will wave at you guys, from Maxville.
AnneH
My Dad's WWII squadron (#425) is at Bagotville. He and my Mom used to go there every five years for reunions. I've always regretted that they missed the last one before Dad died because we were moving the weekend of the reunion.

Were any of you in the 425?

The only exciting thing for me this long weekend is my Mom's 85th birthday on Sunday. My brother's family and I are taking her to the Mandarin for brunch.
Zron
Is Upper Canada Village so good now that it takes two days or is there something special going on?

There is more at Upper Canada Village than can be comfortably seen in four hours, especially when you must do the train ride, and the wagon ride, and the boat ride. A single day, morning and afternoon, is proably sufficient, but can be a bit challenging for the short people. So, we are breaking it up, Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning.

Were any of you in the 425?

Nope, Dad was in 416 (Chatham), 410 (Bagotville) and 409 (Comox). 425 was in Bagotville while we were there, though.

Which Mandarin?
AnneH
There's apparently a brand new Mandarin in Oshawa (near my brother's) so we're trying it out.

The standard joke in our family is that my extremely picky niece only liked to go to the Mandarin when she was little because they had stuff like taps that went on by themselves in the bathroom. My brother insisted on the newest Mandarin so that my niece (who's now 20) can check out the latest in bathroom gadgetry.

ETA: I'm also going to probably buy a new computer tommorrow because I can't tolerate having to wait till work on Wed mornings to read everyone's comments. I'm thinking of it as a gift to/from my boss. I'm using the bonus he just gave me to buy something which should actually inrease my productivity at work.
jennblevins
Oh, man, don't get me started on the Mandarin. Mr. Blevins seems to complain at least weekly about the fact that there aren't any of them in Seattle.
Fields of Gold
Wow, crazy how many people are from the Trenton area, I'm from Belleville myself, and hey, if you are at the Highland games in Maxville, watch out for the Guinness Record attempt at Highland dancing. I, of course wil be lazy and cool in my pool. Paul Bernardo disgusts me.
Rachel RSL
I went to college in Belleville for 2 years. I loved that little town!
PButtercup
When I was a kid and lived in Brighton, Belleville was the big city to us - they had a mall!
Fields of Gold
Of course, living there for 17 years, sucked the big one! Ahh, the Quinte Mall, I used to work at the Coles there. Good times, good times. I go back there now and it freaks me out to see the movie theatre and other crazy "big town' additions. I still love me a good meal at Sneaky Petes. Now, I live in the big town of Ottawa, and I never want to leave.
Zron
Ah Ottawa... all the conveniences of a small town living, combined with big city charm.

(I jest. I actully quite like living here. It's not the coast, of course, but it'll do.)
Fields of Gold
Of course, I actually live outside of Ottawa, in a little town, that has a video store that also is a Bass fishing store and used clothing store. Of course, we also have the two restaurants that specialize in Canadian, Italian and chinese foods, much like little towns in Saskatchewan.
