Just watched "Jeopardy" M. Darcy and now I'm having trouble not typing anything about it. I considered putting it in spoiler tags, but I don't want to tempt anyone. I know I can't avoid those things. I will say I loved the cat story.
BhP
What is the fascination with tonight's Jeopardy? I read back and still can't figure it out.
GRBecca
This day is the best day of the summer so far...and even better is that I'm packing for my trip to Britain and Ireland tonight during commercials! (I feel like I've already seen enough Crest commercials watching and rewatching the preview videos to merit skipping the commercial breaks tonight)

Anyone have brilliant ideas about where I should go on my trip? I've got a weekend in London planned....but after that, I'm going spontaneous. (Preparing me for my upcoming stint on TAR 10...*wish...and sigh* Not really.)

What is the fascination with tonight's Jeopardy? I read back and still can't figure it out.

M.Darcy is on! Against Ken! Who also happens to be a TWOP poster!
devajd
BhP Our very own M. Darcy is on tonights Jeopardy, taking on the mighty Ken. Her real name is Jenny.

Beat you pseudo!... Here comes another season of us living inside each others' heads...
pseudostudent
TWoPper M. Darcy is a contestant tonight, BhP.

ETA: devajd is fast!
AlienD
Hi everyone, I'm Daniela. I have posted around a little bit, mostly in the Carnivale, The Apprentice, and Charmed forums. Miss Alli's recaps got me hooked during the last season and I have already managed to turn my friends into rabid fans of the show. I have been squeeing all day at the thought of TAR starting again and I am having a smores and Bailey's TAR viewing party. Participants: my kitten and I.

Funny story europa1057!

I am so, so excited for tonight. I can't wait for TAR! Roadblocks, detours, philiminations, airport fights, pit stops, Phil in a turtleneck! I. just. can't. wait!
PButtercup
GRBecca - my favourite places in England were: York, Bath and Lacock (where Pride and Prejudice was filmed). I have never been to Ireland. Have fun!
BhP
Woohoo! I will watch! I'd wish you luck M. Darcy, but I guess it's already happened. Though that doesn't stop me from wishing racers luck during TAR, so... GOOD LUCK!!! What an exciting way to start the new season.

whip 1, was posting as good for you as it was for us?

My first TAR episode was the season finale when Shut Up Flo and Zach won. Need I say more?!

ETA: Ken is a TWOP poster? We kick ass!
Machiabelly
whip1 Welcome and enjoy your first TAR episode. I almost envy you, seeing it for the first time is awesome. As rabid as we are over the show, I think we analyze past the point of pure enjoyment..you know some times. Or maybe just me.
Hawkwild
I have been squeeing all day at the thought of TAR starting again and I am having a smores and Bailey's TAR viewing party. Participants: my kitten and I.
OK, AlienD, we need to see your kitten's ID before she has any Bailey's.
Ananayel
Okay, remember how I said I had my fingers crossed that my complex watch/tape arrangement wouldn't go haywire? Well, the good folks at titantv.com tell me that the first episode of the Apprentice is reairing tonight at 8 and 11 on CNBC. It looks like it runs every day this week at these times, which now takes care of my viewing for other nights, but why did it have to start tonight?! I only saw the last couple of eps, after reading one of the high-larious recaps. So. Crossballs is out--I'll tape the 1:30 am airing, and I should be able to tape Apprentice either at 8 while watching BB or at 11 while watching Outback Jack. Damn you, programming gods!!!! <shakes fist angrily yet impotently at the sky>
Rabrab
T. Porter--look for Miri at Cafe Nostra--her boss told her to leave early today and take tomorrow morning off; and make the drive to Dallas for the party -- she's on her way now.

GRBecca-- do you like used book stores? if you do, there's atown you need to go to; it's apparently just lousy with bookstores of all sorts. I think the name is Hay-on-Wye--I'll check and make sure if you're interested.

Y'all have fun on the chat-my connecton is too slow and wonky--I'll get bounced immediately and then over and over again. <sigh>
Hildy
Well, I tried my version of The Philiminator. It was good, but needs some added depth in there someplace. I'm thinking perhaps lemonade instead of seltzer. It's a difficult thing, all this testing....
sammygeorge
Happy TARday everyone! It's been a long, long time. I'm happy to be back among friends (and now that I have a new computer at home, I can actually post once again.)

m darcy congrats on being on Jeopardy! A long time dream of mine but I don't even have the nerve to try out.

Ken is a TWoPer?? Do we know his TWoP name??

2 and half more hours . . .
DuchessKitty
It's a difficult thing, all this testing....
I bet...

I feel your pain europa1057. Just 5 minutes ago Mr.Duchess called me and was like "So, do you want to go out for sushi and movie tonight?"

The hell? Is he high? When I reminded him for like the fiftieth time why I was so damn excited about tonight he just rolled his eyes and sighed. *Sure I was on the phone with him and couldn't actually see his eyes rolling but I just know they were.
It sucks having a SO that isn't obsessed with TAR.
ThatBadgerChick
I am a virgin TAR poster (oops, not anymore). Tonight will be my first time to watch, and I'm ever so excited. Wait, I mean, I'm ever so excited!

Virgin over here, too! I had never even heard of TAR (I know. Don't hurt me.) until The Apprentice. Miss Alli's recaps of TA led me to her recaps of past seasons of TAR led me to being really excited about watching tonight and maybe getting to be one of the cool kids, finally.

I am down with the pomegranate version of the Philimination Cocktail but fuck me, I'm fresh out of kiwis. Can I substitute something else? Wait, I don't have to eat Vegemite for this, do I?
Mama Tiger
I don't think Ken is TWOPper, but M. Darcy is. I just came home and watched the videotape -- and M. Darcy, now I understand why my daughter said she wanted a barf bag sitting in the stands watching me ten years ago. It really is harder watching someone you know than being up there yourself!

And I have a question for you, but will save it till later so everyone can watch and be unspoiled.
piperdown
I don't think Ken is TWOPper, but M. Darcy is

Ken is a TWOPer, but he only signed up recently. His posting name is creatively enough KenJennings.

Even though it was filmed awhile ago, so the outcome is decided....Good Luck M.Darcy.
Rabrab
Mama Tiger, someone posted that Ken is posting over in the Jeopardy! thread in TV Potluck->Game Shows. I haven't taken a look, mostly because the TAR threads have been hopping lately. Is something going on with TAR?
BhP
I'm fresh out of kiwis. Can I substitute something else?

Hmmm... essence of Phil... lessee... just say "you have been Philiminated" to the glass when you finish your drink, that should do the trick.
Mama Tiger
Oh wow, I'll have to check out the Jeopardy threads. In my copious spare time when I'm not reading the TAR threads.

You know, this fall when The Apprentice and Survivor pick up again, I may have to just quit my job so I have time to read everything.
Bill1978
Just a quick question. How long until midnight in America? Just need to know how long I have to wait to read the CBS recap of tonight's episode.
pseudostudent
Awesome job, M. Darcy! I was impressed by your game. And you did way better than that NotKen, who answered maybe five?
El Guapo
Happy TARsday one and all!! Game on!

I was up all night on TARsday Eve, after decorating the TARsday mat, with visions of coach class tickets in my head. I even left some milk and cookies and an ugly-ass turtleneck sweater by the fireplace for Phil.

It's truly the most wonderful time of the year.
ccrean
I'm making up buttons that say "The Amazing Race - Just say YES!" We must put a stop to this epidemic of TARvirginity. Welcome new people! New TAR watchers, new TAR posters, and new TAR lurkers! Let the good times roll.!

Don't forget to practice driving a car with a clutch "on the wrong side of the road."

While some of you work on a drink called the Philiminator, I'm working on a drink called the Very Cherry. Probably no alcohol content, with maraschino cherry garnish and a little paper umbrella. But a very pretty looking drink, in a chic glass, to entice you into my living room. But after you've watch your first fifteen minutes of TAR, then we add the booze, cuz now your hooked!
tanstaafl
What, everyone is coming up with Phil drinks but no TAR Drinking Game? The only one I can find is here. Come on, I've lurked around here long enough to know that the TWoP boards can do better than this!
Zron
This is a little closer to home.
JenEx
Ken is a TWOP poster? We kick ass!

Yes, but M. Darcy? Was here first!

And damnit, M., I missed your interview. Literally walked into the house and turned the tv on as Alex was moving on to the guy in the middle. Aargh.

Less than an hour! Numfar, do the dance of joy!
Bubbacat
Let's see:
--VCR set, check;
--phone unplugged, check;
--wearing "God is in the Tub" shirt, check;
--snacks prepared, check;
--booze on ice, check.

Looks like I'm set for the first episode of TAR5!! Yay.

BTW, welcome to all the newbies. It's great to see some names (new to TAR) that I recognize from The Apprentice and Survivor. Nice to have you on board.
Nirele
Happy TARSday! Less than an hour to go...I am soo excited!

I'm a long-time TAR lurker but very occasional poster so I'll take the newbie welcome. But this season I'm going to roll up my sleeves and jump into the fray. How can I not, with ya'll wonderful folks around?
tanstaafl
This is a little closer to home.

Yeah, but it's also pretty specific to TAR 4. Good start though.
Zron
Well, yeah, it is TAR4 specific, but that's 'cause TAR5 hasn't started yet. Once it does, I'm sure that topic will get lively again.
bettymojo
Tonight is my first ever viewing of TAR. I'm actually kind of excited about it, because I love Miss Alli.

I'm not sure what to expect, I have only the most rudimentary understanding of what is going on, but it seems like everyone here is so awesome that I'll pick it up in no time.

T-two minutes!
Suzikins
No problem, Red Targetter I got your back. I get confused myself because I watch a lot of shows on cable so the show times are two hours behind EST but network shows are shown on the same schedule as CST. No harm, as Mama Tiger noted the correction.

How can I not, with ya'll wonderful folks around?
Word to the nth degree on this!! I have to say that this has been one of the nicest show forums on all of TWOP, especially as far as newbies are concerned.

However, due to the very intense pressure of this thread...I mixed up a few of my own cocktails after a sucktastic day at the office. Didn't have the right ingredients on hand for a Philiminator but margaritas on the rocks with salt...YUM!
ClowingAround
Just wanted to quickly add my two sense: Happy Tarsday to all!!! I can't believe this day is finally here. In the words of one of my favorite teams: YAAY!!!!:)
fangums
Is it lame how insanely excited I am about TAR being back?

Nah.
Sneak
Here I am, surrounded by literally hundreds of televisions at the station, and I can't watch the beginning of the Race because I'm too busy. Now that's irony.
JerseyExport
About Harry Potter, J.K. Rowling has said that he didn't use the mirror because he forgot about it after his vow to himself never to use it, but that it will be important later on. I cannot wait for Harry Potter and the Halfblood Prince to come out. I'm dying.
ljp
Don't know where else to put this, cross posted to the TIVO topic as well...

FYI- For those of you with TIVO trying to set up a season pass for the Amazing Race, TIVO seems to see the premiere and each other show separately, as the TV listing has "The Amazing Race" for the premiere and "The Amazing Race 5" for the rest of the season. In fact, I had seasoned passed tonight's episode as well, but it didn't record. Check your passes well, something isn't quite right. I have it as number one recording priority and had to manually start the recording. Thankfully the TV was already on that channel and I sat down to watch before 10 so it was all in the buffer.
isiscloud
Didn't have the right ingredients on hand for a Philiminator

Please enlighten me about the right ingredients.
y3
I'm excited it's TARsday, and I'm not even from the United States!! Right now, I'm trying to get everyone in the office around me excited about the fact that a show they've barely heard of is being shown RIGHT NOW in another country. (About the best I've managed is a vague sense that people are either vicariously happy and/or somewhat sympathetic towards me).

Somebody pass me a Philiminator....
Arianrhod
Drinks! I knew I forgot something at the grocery store. Damn. Drinks are especially important since BB is on directly before TAR. Grrr.

I have no hand-eye-foot coordination on the left side of my body evidently because the last time I was in Great Britain and rented a car with Mr.Duchess I was hopeless.

Okay, either way this is totally going to expose my ignorance on the subject, but I'm going to go for it. How else do we learn? Does that mean the pedals are opposite, too, or did I just misinterpret that? I mean, I could do it, 'cause after years of damaged tendons and whatnot I can drive with either foot, but I'd like to be prepared.

Anyone heard if there's a tentative release date on the next HP book?
pseudostudent
isiscloud, go back 3 pages.
dittus
Arianrhod, the pedals are the same, as are the gear positions on the stick shift. The only difference is the turn signal/windshield wiper levers are reversed on the steering wheel. It was pretty funny when my friend kept turning on her wiper (in the summer sun) every time she wanted to turn.
ThatBadgerChick
Okay, my first time watching TAR was a little painful and embarrassing but mostly a lot of fun and also I was a little drunk and I can't wait to do it again. In other words, deja vu. (TMI? So sorry.)

I can officially recommend my version of the Philiminator, which I shamelessly stole from someone upthread who suggested a cosmo but with pomagranate juice instead of cranberry. Mine was a shot of Grey Goose, a shot of Triple Sec (it'll be Cointreau when I get some, but I was out), a dash of lime juice, and a glug or two of Pom Wonderful. Shake with ice and pour. 'Twas delicious. I'm not sure I can wait until next Tuesday to have it again. Oh wait, I taped the show and can watch it as many times as I want! Hot damn!
mel42024
I finally got to watch TAR, and how awesome was that? Unfortunately I did miss Jeopardy though, so I think someone should fill me in (in spoiler tags of course, for those who don't want to know). It would be greatly appreciated!
DuchessKitty

In addition to this, at least in the Jaguar that we were renting, the driver's seat was where the passenger sits in American cars. So although the gear positions are the same it was impossible for me with my useless left hand.

TAR's just starting for us west coasters!! Whoopeee!!
SeaBreeze341
Fortunately, as much as Pittsburgh sucks, Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune never conflicts in other interesting TV shows, even when TAR was as early as 8.

In a nutshell, mel42024, Ken nearly played Final Jeopardy against the house. The other guy rung in correctly to get the final clue right, moving his total from ($400) to $1200. The parenthesis represents a negative amount, in case you're wondering. Jen Miller (a.k.a. M. Darcy) did well, but went from $1200 to $0 toward the end. During final jeopardy, the other guy left his response blank and wagered nothing. Ken could have wagered $18000, with the fact being that if he'd missed he'd still win. He missed Final Jeopardy, but wagered only $8000, going from $22,000 to $14,000.

Hope that helps. I'll try to put more later when I get a chance.

Red314159's post from another thread to here where it better fits (hopefully):

Roulette may have the worst odds, but it also pays less than the odds of winning (pays 35-1 for a win with odds 38-1), so the house still wins overall.

True, but it also depends on how you bet in other places, like on the line, column, the first, second, or third 12 numbers, black or red, even or odd, and 1-18, 19-36.

I actually went from $1000 to $18000 for betting $500 on a chip (7 of course). Basically, you're guaranteed to walk out with something, so as long as you don't spend the winnings. As for the net amount, the house does win more than lose.
mel42024
Thanks, SeaBreeze. I get the gist of it anyways, which is all I need. Stupid Ken. Actually, not stupid at all, but you know what I mean. How many days is that for him now?
