Any hopes for Donald Sutherland coming in to play Grandpa Bauer? Anyone? Anyone?

Apr 28, 2004 @ 9:52 pm
I've always, always got hopes for the Donald (or as I thought to call him, "the Silver Velvet") to be on 24. But not much of a chance - Kiefer and his dad aren't exactly close.
I am pleased with Paul Blackthorne - he's the closest to the Bizarro Jack that I can really imagine, though so far we haven't seen him in action with a hacksaw. But yeah, he's gorgeous, twisted, ruthless, has a daughter the exact same age, and is eeeevil. And it seems that Palmer can't resist giving him everything he wants, either.

I didn't see a "24 Cast in Other Roles" and wasn't sure if this fit with "24 in the Media" but I just thought I would let this little tidbit of news, or if it really is news, i don't know. Anyway, Sometimes I catch the Larry Sanders Show which is on after SNL here in Hawaii and well, Potato Face and Lady MacBeth are both cast members on the show. I was shocked.
Oh and I saw Palmer cast as an evil Secret Service Agent in "Absolute Power" the movie with Clint Eastwood and Gene Hackman where Clint Eastwood is framed for a murder at the White House.

Well I think Paul Blackthorne started out as a good foil for Jack, his very vague motivations for the terrorist plot just diminish him as a villain, in my eyes. As does the whole keeping his daughter in California thing. Speaking of which, I've been very impressed with Alexandra Lydon. I know a lot of people don't like her, but I think she brings the perfect mix of pathos and fear to her role. She's had a pretty shitty 4 hours so far and it only looks like it's going to get worse for her.
Also, Zachary Quinto and Mary Lynn Rajskub have grown on me as characters this season. Adam's sister was introduced three hours ago and since then, I think Quinto's handled Adam's character very well. And Rajskub is perfect for Chloe.
ITA about Tom Sizemore. I'd love to see him as a villain for Day 4.
Benji
May 14, 2004 @ 3:39 pm
Rajskub was the best casting 24's done since season one. Oh wait, scratch that. Since Reiko.
The ensemble this year is pretty amazing, with the exception of the duds in the Palmer plot (which now includes Haysbert himself). I know it's hard if you're given crappy material, but it's his job to elevate that into something compelling. PJJ can do it, Kiefer has to do it at times (see: end of season 2), and hell, even Reiko is amazing when she spends the entire episode behind a computer screen. Haysbert looks bored right now and for all the pre-season buzz about a "changed, jaded" Palmer, he hasn't even scratched the surface of that. He should do himself a favor and go get another shot at a film career, because he's just stagnating here.

I was reading in the New York Times a few Sundays ago that TPTB are scrapping the entire main cast (except Kiefer, of kourse) for Season 4, though a few characters will be making guest apperances. Considering that we're getting ready to start up again in a few weeks I thought this thread would be humming... Guess not.
The article mentioned a few names, among them the excellent

There will be 4 regulars (paid for all 24 episodes) this season:
Kiefer
Kim Raver (Audrey Raines)
Alberta Watson (Erin Driscoll)
William Devane (James Heller)
The following have a "Guest Star" credit with recurring status:
Mary Lynn Rajskub as Chloe and Geoff Pierson as now President Keeler are the only other cast members from the 3rd season who appear in the first episode. Carlos Bernard and Reiko Aylesworth have both been announced as returning later on.
New recurring cast members include:
Jonathan Ahdout (Behrooz Araz) - He also played Shohreh Aghdashloo's son in House of Sand and Fog
Lukas Haas (Andrew Paige) - the young boy in Witness
Nestor Serrano (Navi Araz)
Roger Cross (Curtis Manning)
Louis Lombardi (Edgar Stiles) - The Sopranos
Sean Doyle (Ronnie Lobell) - villain in Frequency
Faran Tahir (Tomas Sherek) - joins Kevin Chapman and Nina Landey as actors who've appeared on the show playing different characters
Joseph Hodge (Dar)
Lana Parrilla (Sarah)
Alfred Vasloo - villain in The Mummy

I think TPTB said that Elisha & booted-off co. *may* make returns in the season, but there was no confirmation; it all seemed pretty much in the air. Personally, I'd love to see a glimpse of Kim and Chase having fun in suburbia, but I don't think there's much that they can do with Palmer; they've squeezed him dry of any other possible storylines, IMO.

Does this mean that Wayne takes down Hal in an election? They must have done a heck of a job covering up Season 3's events.
Past articles have indicated that Wayne is the "newly elected President".
This
article uses a bit different language ("assuming", rather than "elected") and that may put a different slant on the info....though I don't understand why Hal wouldn't "assume" the presidency if Logan steps down...
"Woodside's character, Wayne Palmer, will follow in his late brother's footstep by assuming the presidency, taking over from the twitchy and traitorous Charles Logan (Gregory Itzin). King's character, Angela, is a "powerful advocacy lawyer," according to Fox."

In this case, I think we should go with the language from the actual
Fox Press Release which is also used by the primary trade papers,
Variety and
The Hollywood Reporter. I don't usually look for accuracy from secondary web sources like zap2it which is the source used by the Montgomery paper.

THE "PALMER FAMILY" UNITES AS REGINA KING AND DB WOODSIDE CLOCK IN FOR SEASON SIX OF "24"
As 24's "Day 6" approaches, the cast continues to assemble, with Regina King ("Ray") and DB Woodside (24's "Wayne Palmer") joining last season's most Emmy-nominated series as series regulars in season six. The clock will reset for 24 in January, Mondays (9:00-10:00 PM ET/PT) on FOX.
After last season's shocking assassination of beloved President Palmer (Dennis Haysbert), the Palmer Family now comes together with the addition of King as Palmer's sister "Angela," a powerful advocacy lawyer, and the return of Palmer's strong-minded brother "Wayne" (Woodside) as the recently elected President.

ProfCrash
Jul 19, 2006 @ 10:50 am
I don't know that there is that much to explain. Jack handed Wayne off to Bill and asked Bill to bring Wayne to a safe plce. I doubt that was Bill's home, since it would have been searched by CTU when they arrested Bill. Wayne was not going to re-emerge until he was no longer a target, meaning until the evidence against Logan was in the right hands. That happened in the last 10 minutes of the show. More likely then not, Bill tucked Wayne away at a friends house and told him not to make any phone calls unless it was to Bill because he was in danger. So the above is speculation but I don't think it is a massive jump to make.

I am praying for an interesting death for Wayne. I know that is bad and will add to the list of things that might send me to hell but I really want Wayne dead by the end of Season 6. On principle alone. Although wanting a fictional character to die probably isn't the same as wanting a real person to die so I won't feel all that bad about it.
I am trying to figure out why I hate this decision so much and can only fall back on the explination that once again the writers have managed to develop another political scenario that would not happen. I will be slightly less pissed if Season 6 takes place 5 1/2 years after Season 5 so at least Wayne can be modelled on RFK (time to run for and win another office and then launch a Presidential campaign) but I doubt that would happen as it would make Jack pretty close to 50 at the stasrt of the season.

This was in Ausiello's blog from the TCA Fox party last night:
Kiefer Sutherland showed up and was literally engulfed by reporters. Luckily, I was at the center of the stampede and listened in as he chatted about the new season and the upcoming 24 flick. He confirmed that President Logan will be back "in some capacity," and it sounded like Kim Raver will be, too. "I can tell you that contractually, she has the freedom to do two shows."
I'm assuming that ABC wanted her for
The Nine enough to give her the flexibiity of doing both. The alternative might have been to risk 24 exercising her contract option and their having to recast her role in The Nine. (And ABC would be familiar with that strategy having done it themselves last year with John Stamos for
Jake in Progress which kept him from becoming a regular on
ER.) Of course, her role in 24 may not be very extensive. However, the ensemble nature of
The Nine where many stories are going to unfold which will mean Kim won't have to be available every day combined with the nature of 24's shooting schedule (I heard Richard Burgi talk about it being the best schedule he'd ever had because he could do all of his scenes for two episodes as FauxYork in about 3 days and then have a couple of weeks off) probably make it easier to do both than in other situations.

Wasn't Jean Smart quoted at the Emmys as saying she had already filmed her role? I can't find the source so somebody else may need to confirm.

Wasn't Jean Smart quoted at the Emmys as saying she had already filmed her role?
No. Almost completely positive that's not the case.
As for Elisha, her return was announced at the Winter TCA in January just as the season was starting to air.
There was an
interview with her that included an extra link to an audio and slide show under her picture. The following quote comes from the audio interview:
I think 24 has to go in the path that makes sense for them. Over the years it's been difficult to write for my character. So I think when they feel they want me back in and it suits the show, they're open to it too. It's a nice kind of relationship.
The entire article is very funny and Elisha comes across very well. Excerpts:
But she won't rule out any comebacks.
"So far, there haven't been any phone calls saying 'We want you back,' but I didn't expect them to ask me back last year, and they did," she says......
Frame 9: She asked to bowl a second game.
In my 16 celebrity bowling interviews, only one star had the time, or inclination, to go two -- and that was Davy Jones, who was trying to exorcise some personal demons. So it doesn't matter that Elisha didn't improve on her 87 in the first game. Or that I had a drop-off from my first game of 210.
She asked to bowl another game, forever securing a place in the Bowling With Celebrities Hall of Fame. If there was such a thing.
Frame 10: Plain and simple, she defies the stereotype.
It would be easy to dismiss Cuthbert as the clueless Kim or the blond temptress on the Maxim cover. Even her character in The Quiet is your typical "mean girl" cheerleader that we've seen a million times in movies.
But that's not the person I met. Elisha Cuthbert is funny, friendly and brighter than the Day-Glo orange carpet at most bowling alleys.
I've rarely had more fun bowling with anyone, much less a celebrity.
Which only goes to prove: You can appreciate a woman for her physical beauty, but you can only truly worship her for her bowling.

Last year's showing was a complete waste of time. She was there for 2 eps, and then disappeared again- why?
In my opinion, that was the best possible use of Kim's character. I think she would have been a lot more effective if she had been used in that was in other post-S1 seasons (S2 in particular); as an emotional foil to Jack, even if it's in a negative way.
Tallulah2 posted the Jean Smart quote on the spoiler thread. However, there's no link and it is from E!'s Kristen who is decidely hit and miss with her information as I understand it. Here's the quote as it was posted there;
From mrfriendly: 24 scoop! Please--they won--give us something!
I got Jean Smart for five seconds on the pre-show carpet. She said she has been told that she and Gregory Itzin appear on the show again, but just briefly. She said their story has really run its course already.
I'm not too familiar with the E! website myself, so somebody else may have more luck finding that link if it's genuine. Make of it what you will. It's a little different to what I originally said; I remembered it as her saying she'd already
filmed her role.

oli, Kristin has been better............. but then how could she have gotten worse in the last year or so. I think she's gotten better since she started appearing regularly on E! Maybe there's slightly more vetting required. But I still tend to think that most of her accurate info about 24 (except when she names a PTB or cast member) is purloined from elsewhere. What
tallulah found would dovetail with Itzin's comments from the Red Carpet to Ausiello:
I caught up with nominee Gregory Itzin on the red carpet and he revealed that President Logan will resurface around the midday point. "It started with, 'Oh, you'll be back around [Episode] 7 or 8,'" he says. "Now it looks like it'll be 9 or 10. The story tells itself for those guys. They know they want me back and it will organically happen." The only question now is how Logan will be woven back into Jack's nightmarish day. Luckily, Itzin's got the answer to that, too. "He has information that they need," he offers, "which is why they come after him."
I'll add Jean Smart to the list above.
