Now that I'm watching an episode of him, Gregory Hines (RIP) on Will & Grace was preety good. A lot of good stuff from him

Gregory Hines was most excellent on "Will and Grace". Made me angry that his CBS sitcom didn't last (BS scheduling).
The "W&G" guest stars that I like are those from before they made such a big deal out of it. Those who were brought in, but were not bigger than the plot. People like Debbie Reynolds, Sidney Pollack, Woody Harrelson, and the first appearance of Molly Shannon.
The episode of "Seinfeld" with Keith Hernandez; although I wasn't a fan of his, that was a great episode. Also, Jay Thomas as Jerry Gold on "Murphy Brown"
I am sick now of shows where there are constant guest stars. We know the culprits: W&G, "Friends", "Simpsons", the entire UPN comedy lineup. Any show where someone goes "it's NSync!" must be stopped (though I did like that episode).
Oh, and I hate Chris Elliott. On "Everybody Loves Raymond", of course.

Mrjaz is a casual watcher of The Practice, and usually just wanders through the room while I'm watching, and says, "Who's that," or "What did Alan do now?" But the last episode I left on the TiVO for him, because I said, "I have four words for you. William Shatner. Crazy lawyer." He said, "Yeah, that's something I have to see." While he was nowhere near as entertaining as he was on Third Rock From the Sun he just does crazy so well.

Speaking of which, I am tired of every detective/police/mystery show turning into
Columbo. Don't show me Mary Kay Place in the first five minutes then have her disappear into the Red Herring Green Room till the last act. I know she's coming back, and it's distracting. If I can name the actor, I know s/he either did the crime, or is about to be offed or otherwise victimized. So, L&O, CSI, step away from the Love Boat.

Vivica A. Fox was on Alias not too long ago, along with Quentin Tarantino (who was on the show in season 1). QT is great as the slimey McKenas Cole, sort of like an evil Marshall in his mannerisms. Vivica, however, looked like she popped in, read flatly from some cue cards, and then promptly left. It was some of the worst acting I've seen from somebody who's supposed to be as experienced as her.
Isabella Rossellini was also on Alias recently as Katya Derevko, one of Irina's sisters. It may have first been though up as stunt casting (Alias is pretty close to being notorious for this), but it was good stunt casting. I didn't mind at all that she shared some of the limelight (it would have been a travesty to only give her a few lines like many of the other big names to come in. I swear they're probably getting paid by the word, and that's why their parts are so fucking tiny.)
I also extremely enjoyed Christian Slater's two episode guest role as Neil Caplan back in season 2. He did a fantastic job and seemed to fit right in.
Now I'm just waiting rather impatiently for my tall order of 'Susan Sarandon as Sark's Mother' (with a side of fries and a coke, please) to be filled. She does do TV guest appearances (Friends, MadTV, Simpsons, etc.) *crosses arms, taps foot impatiently*

Best: Kelsey Grammar on Wings as Frasier. He and Helen's relationship how he tried to keep cool, but finally lost it. He was nominated for emmy, so he was nominated for same character in 3 different shows.
Tim Daly on Monk. Classic, especially when Tony S said he never saw Wings.
Ernest Borgine as the angel on Little House. He played it perfect and did fabolous.
Malcolm Jamal-Warner on Fresh Prince making fun of Cosby Show.
Worst: Tara Lipinksi on 7th heaven. She sucks at acting.

Yes. I think actual caffeine jitters would eminate from the screen.

Oh, sallyiscool, the Tim Daly episode of Monk was hysterical. "Was it funny?" "Tim Daly was good."
You know, this McKenas Cole-Marshall being related thing only adds fuel to my wackjob 'Marshall is Milo Rambaldi' theory.

One of my all time favorite guest spots: Peter Boyle on The X-Files, in "Clyde Bruckman's Final Repose."

Best: Martin Sheen on Murphy Brown as a former liberal that they all admire but nobody knows that he's no longer a liberal and Murphy is interviewing and he saying all these right wing properganda stuff like he's for the death penalty and stuff. Just too funny since Martin Sheen is arrested every other week for some cause.
John Amos on The West Wing and John Ritter on Buffy
Worst: The kid on West Wing Jesse something or other, so bad he's not even worth looking up but him singing in the bull pen last week mad me want to scream. Get him off my show.

John Larroquette and James Whitmore both had great roles on The Practice, I especially loved Whitmore's Oz charachter.
As for best voice stunt casting, that would be Jasper Johns as himself of the Simpsons. I think it's great that the most influential living painter in the world has enough of a sense of humor to appear on a cartoon.

Best
Ewan MacGregor on ER (so cute, so tragic...sigh)
Mira Sorvino on Will and Grace (freakin' hilarious)
Seth Green on That 70's Show (Seth in anything makes it better)
Brad Pitt on Friends (I'm sorry, I just can't help it)
Kevin Bacon on Will and Grace (the dancing, the dancing!)
Bruce Willis on Friends (still can't help it)
Worst
Anything with Tara Lipinski (there are no words)
in fact usually anytime a non-actor does a guest appearance, double points if that non-actor is playing themselves
ETA: There was once a rumor about the boys from N'sync would be guesting on Buffy. I can't even...I mean the....there just isn't...my eyes!my eyes! Thank goodness they stopped at Ashanti. I mean is there a category lower than worst? I think I'm going to have to go lie down and think about John Ritter.

Two of the best stunt castings I can remember are from SNL.
Although I loathe both of these people...
1) Madonna was very funny in the Wayne's World dream sequence where she hooks up with Wayne and admires Garth's unit.
2) Jesse Jackson reading the Cat in the Hat during Weekend Update to honor Dr. Suess. It just doesn't get any funnier than that.
Other honorable mentions include Richard Belzer as Detective Munch (sp?) on the X-Files and The Dukes of Hazzard theme song in Jonathon Kent's (John Schneider) pick-up on Smallville.

Best
Christine Baranski as Dr Nora on Frasier - that was one of that show's best episodes ever, I thought. Piper Laurie was pretty good in that episode too as her alcoholic mother.
Bea Arthur on Malcolm In The Middle as Lois' mother. I've loved Bea ever since Dorothy.
Joan Collins on Will & Grace - that part with the Taco and the dog had me cracking up.
It's been said by many other posters, but Matt Damon and Kevin Bacon were great on W&G too.
Worst
Jean Claude Van Damme, Elle MacPherson and Julia Roberts on Friends - why?
It can't be said enough, but Ashanti on Buffy.
Madonna on Will & Grace - get off my TV, you old hag!
Whoopi Goldberg, Naomi Campbell, Lady Victoria Hervey, Emma Bunton, Stephen Gateley, Graham Norton, Kristin Scott Thomas on Ab Fab. Basically, any guest star except Lulu, Miranda Richardson, Erin O'Connor, Mo Gaffney or Kate O'Mara on Ab Fab - that show has a worse case of guest star-itis than even the Simpsons.
ETA: Geri ‘Ginger Spice’ Halliwell on Sex And The City - what the hell was that all about?

Me? I'm liking the where-has-she-been-for-the-last-twenty-years genius stunt casting of Cousin Geri (Geri Jewell) from Facts of Life as the whorehouse "gimp" on Deadwood.
Hated Kathy Griffin on XF, almost as much as I despised Mimi Rogers as Diana Fowley. OTOH, liked Will Sasso as the trailer-dwelling idiot boy who botched his genie wishes, and writer Darin Morgan as Eddie VanBlundht (the shapeshifting shlub who fathered a slew of tail-havin' babies).

Which episode of The X-Files did Kathy Griffin guest on?
She played a set of twins on the episode where there was this weird town where twins felt compelled to beat the crap out of each other all the time. It had this ending with Mulder and Scully each meeting THEIR own doubles and getting their asses kicked by them.
Jesse Jackson reading the Cat in the Hat during Weekend Update to honor Dr. Suess. It just doesn't get any funnier than that.

Ok, I'm outing this now, since I think my swearing to secrecy ended when the show did. There was some discussion of Jay & Silent Bob (Jason Mewes and Kevin Smith) guesting on Buffy. There are times when I just sit and imagine what that would have been like, and I sigh with regret. BTW, it was a very reliable source who told me this.

So, instead, the world was blessed with Kevin Smith's recent guest appearance on Yes, Dear. See what you made him do, Ben? Happy now? Anyway, Kevin was fine, of course. Certainly better than Chuck Norris. The best part was the tag, when Kevin did Silent Bob for quite a long time. Just him, just Silent, just Bob. It made up for the craptasticness that is Yes, Dear. Almost.

Bea Arthur on Malcolm In The Middle as Lois' mother. I've loved Bea ever since Dorothy.
Bea Arthur's great guest turn was as Dewey's babysitter. It was Cloris Leachman who pulls in the great performance as Lois's mom.

Kelsey Grammer on "The Simpsons" as Sideshow Bob!! Comedy Gold!!
I totally agree about Will & Grace... how the gueststars were funnier when they blended in with the other characters. Debbie Reynolds especially as she worked so well with the main four.
Sammy Davis, Jr. on "All in the Family".... when after telling everyone not to say anything about Sammy's glass eye and they're having coffee, Archie asks if he would like some cream in his eye. LOL!!

I know it's been mentioned, but I still have so much love for the guest casting on Arrested Development. Liza Minelli and Henry Winkler cracked me up all year, then when you add JLDreyfuss, Carl Whethers, Amy Poehler and several others, it's added up to such a funny year.

I loved Shelley Winters as Nana Mary on "Roseanne." That character always cracked me up.
Another good one is Kevin McDonald ("Kids in the Hall!") as Pastor Dave on "That 70's Show." I'm a HUGE "KitH" fan, so seeing them pop up anywhere is awesome.
Speaking of, I also liked Luke Wilson as Casey Kelso on "That 70's Show." He was great as (Michael) Kelso's older brother.
Others have mentioned Alec Baldwin on "Friends," Chloris Leachman on "Malcolm in the Middle," and Matt Damon and Kevin Bacon on "Will & Grace."
On the other hand, I never did watch "Buffy," but I did see an episode of "Sabrina the Teenage Witch" that Ashanti was on. There are no words to describe the horror, and she was playing herself. This is why she's called ASShanti over at my house.
I also hate everybody on "W&G," besides the aforementioned two actors, and Gregory Hines.
Oh, and if I happen to be watching "SNL" (not anytime lately, considering its severe sucktitude), I love it when somebody pops up that you're not expecting. Even if it is Britney Spears. Especially when it's Will Farrell.

Yeah, I really liked Kathy Griffin on Seinfeld, even though I usually can't stand her.
As for stunt casting, remember that episode of Friends where George Clooney and Noah Wylie guest starred as a couple of ER docs who ended up on a double date with Monica and Rachel? The episode was hilarious, but George and Noah didn't really seem to add anything to it. You knew that they were just on because ER was the number 1 show at the time.
There's so many, but I can't think of them off-hand...I'd have to say the worst was when O-Town showed up on All My Children. I think I stopped watching at that time. Blech!

Speaking of the Simpsons, they are on special guest overload. I love King of the Hill and their wild guest selections (John Ritter, Chris Rock, Gene Simmons). They do it so much better and plus they are almost never playing themselves.
