Re the Tivo etc - I don't have one, or a DVD player, or even cable TV - I have an antiquated video player and TV and that's it! But it's in my plans to get all that.

Yogi that sounds like a wonderful way to teach the kids about expressing unconditional love. And who better to do it than Yogi?

JRT no I just can't bring myself to wait till the shows air here, I always go on line and spoil it for myself, even thought I tell myself each week to just wait.

Hi Cal *waves all the way from Down Under*, nice to have you join our little group of friends.

Well you lucky people, enjoy tonight! I am so envious! Wish I was there!
Mama Tiger
I'm no TiVo expert, so I'll have to defer to those who actually have it to let you know. Although you'd clearly need a DVD player to play DVDs (or, ideally, a DVD burner to burn your TiVo'd shows onto, I guess!). As for whether you want a traditional VCR, I suspect you'd only need it for backup, or for multiple recording if you happen to want to record two shows simultaneously. Which is why in our house we have a VCR attached to every TV, so we can cover up to four simultaneous recordings, which is often necessary considering the wildly differing tastes in our family!
Skycatcher
Aaaarrrrrrrgh! I hate football!! I know nothing about the game, it's on in the background so I won't miss Survivor and it's driving me nutsy. There's this digital timer that's been on 7 minutes for the last 45 minutes. They do a play, and the clock goes down by 15 seconds, they fart around for 2 minutes, and then do another play - for 8 seconds! At this rate it'll be hours before this idiocy is over! Sheeeeesh!

It's almost 7PM (West Coast time), and it looks like at least another hour of football. And Gawd only knows how much yak time there'll be at the end of the game. There has to be some kind of most important player award and all kinds of time wasted! Then the (perfectly quaffed and suited) armchair quarterbacks have to replay the game (again) in case watchers missed anything running to the fridge for a beer.

I'm not a very happy camper here!
Ricci
and if for some reason it goes into OVERTIME (would be first overtime in superbowl history I hear)...
this is past my bedtime! (school schedule)
Sheherazade
Word. Sports time is some messed up, screw-with-your-head "time", that's for sure.
Mama Tiger
Well, crap. And now there's even a chance of overtime.

But the good news is that TPTB promised that they'd start Survivor "no more than" half an hour after the game ends.

If it EVER ends......
AlmondEyes
Same here, Skycatcher - I'm royally pissed. I have a very early appointment tomorrow and planned to turn in as soon as ASS went off at 11 EST. I had a feeling this game wouldn't end at 10!

They're down to the 2-minute warning, which means they'll be playing for at least another 10 minutes - unless Carolina scores a tying touchdown, which means all bets are off. After that, don't forget the exciting post-game shows where they'll award the MVP, blah, blah, blah. Airing ASS right after the Super Bowl is a great ratings bonanza, but the risk is that the game will go all goddamned nite.

My most optimistic guess? Another 30 to 45 minutes, at least.

Dammit!!! Carolina just scored a touchdown!! And if they get the extra point to tie the game. . . oh, this is an absolute disaster.
Mama Tiger
YAY! New England just scored the (presumably) winning field goal!!! With only 4 seconds to go, not much chance of anything else happening!!!! (Not that I care that New England is winning, just that SOMEBODY is winning!)

Time for Survivor -- FINALLY!!
Skycatcher
7:28 and it's over - WooHOO. (Don't ask me who won - the guys in the dark shirts - that's all I know. ) Now let's see how much time they waste with post-game stuff. But soon.....I hope.....soon. For once I'm glad I live on the West Coast. At least I don't have to wait until midnight to see Survivor! And this time there won't be 28 pages of your comments to plow through - yes, YOU. Don't act all innocent, you know who you are!
AlmondEyes
Mama Tiger, not so fast - now we get to enjoy the friggin' post-game show!! Given your previous post, looks like we could be waiting till 11 for ASS. Grrrrrr!

I love how CBS keeps running mini-commercials reminding everyone that Survivor is "coming up" soon. They don't want people to forget, or go to sleep in frustration. They'd better speed up this post-game crap and get on with it already.
Skycatcher
AlmondEyes - do you suppose they think anyone watching DOESN'T know Survivor is coming up????? They've been running those commercials all along. I know because every time I hear the theme I jump up to see if it's the program, and damn! it's just another commercial. I resent the constant teasing, and am about to start channelling my inner pit bull!
AlmondEyes
Skycatcher, I hear you. If I hear one more commercial telling me that Survivor is next, coming up, etc., I'll lose it!! Sounds like a lot of hot air to me. Hmmph.

The game is over. They've awarded the MVP - haven't they? So what the hell are they waiting for? I don't care what those 4 idiot announcers have to say - bring on ASS!!

edited to add: methinks this stupid game and post-game junk is finally over!!! Woo hoo!!!
vailfiregirl
If CBS would stop promo-ing Survivor coming up, we probably would have been watching the show 15 minutes ago!

I like football, but all this post game is just crap. Pure crap!
Skycatcher
Do you suppose, since it's going to be so late on the East Coast, that MB and/or TPTB might rerun it early in the week? I haven't heard any such thing, but it would make sense. Oh, shoot, I've got to get a grip - "make sense". Yeah, right, like that means anything to TPTB.

Ooops, I think this is it. See ya'll in an hour.
bookgirl137
Hi, new in this forum, but I've been watching since Borneo.

Just a note on the Tivo situation... I have a Tivo with DVD player, and my sister just got the Tivo with DVD player/recorder for Christmas. So both of those are available.
Skycatcher
If anybody asks, there'll be a rerun on Tuesday at 8PM.
yogi bear
my sister just got the Tivo with DVD player/recorder for Christmas.

Ohhh, thanks for that info, bookgirl. Now all I want for Christmas is a Tivo with DVD player/recorder.... I just see lovely stacks of DVDs with Survivor written all over them.

And Hey, Cal!

I'm hating that Aussie Girl has to wait for SAS... Tonight was excruciating for me. Although I must say that Tom Brady is very pleasant to look at, and I thoroughly enjoyed his little speech when he got the Big Silver Football Trophy. I'm glad the Patriots won. Now he will have all sorts of endorsement deals, and I will get to enjoy his fine self for many months.
AussieGirl
So, how was is guys? I'm green with envy.

They showed the Superbowl here, here - in Australia! Like I care (but Mr Aussie/Montana was real pleased). What I want to know is why, if they can show the damn Superbowl, they can't they then give us Survivor straight after. Even if it is the middle of the day...

Just tell me one thing, how did Peachy look? Was he even more gorgeous? And what's this about a car accident he had? News, please....
AussieGirl
Yogi, you said in Peachy's thread - wet Peachy by the fireside at TC - it's enough to make a woman cry.
yogi bear
Yes, Aussie Girl, it was lovely - he was lovely! You have a lot to look forward to. And showing the Super Bowl and not Survivor?!? Madness, I tell you - Madness!
AussieGirl
Total insanity, Yogi[B].

Got to go, the wild storms are coming in so I have to shut off all the electrical things. If you don't hear from me in the next couple of days, it will mean that we've lost power again, or that I've simply become too depressed at having no Survivor and gone off to cry somewhere!
Hildy
Hope the storms weren't too bad, Aussiegirl. I'm happy to hear of the repeat of the premiere, as there's no way I could've stayed up that late. I bailed about 10 of 10. Just too long and hectic a weekend for me to last that long. I'm still exhausted.
draadje
Good luck with the storms, Aussiegirl. I truly hate it when there is no electricity, especially at night. I can't sleep, can't read, and can't watch tv. Bleh.

Yesterday was my anniversary, and I was resigned to the fact that I wouldn't be able to see Survivor, because I thought it would start at nine, and I would still be out at dinner. Imagine my surprise when I arrived home at 11 and saw that it was just beginning.

So, in this case, I didn't mind the Superbowl. However, because of that damn thing, my favorite restaurant was closed.

Hey Yogi, how are Mr Bear and little Bear? Are they all okay?
suctionprints
Do you suppose, since it's going to be so late on the East Coast, that MB and/or TPTB might rerun it early in the week? I haven't heard any such thing, but it would make sense.
skycatcher, you can watch ASS again on Tuesday. Hee, I'm probably going to!

ETA: Whoops, read the thread...

yogi: I have TiVo with DirectTV and just adore it. It cost me $99 for the machine, and an additional $4/month. What this means is after the cost of the TiVo maching is that I am still paying $15 less a month than cable for similar packages. Only problem I'm having is that I need to dump rare shows to VCR and my old TV is predigital everything. So, I'm probably going to upgrade that hardware.

That game never seemed to frickin' end. I'm thrilled for the rioting Pats fans, but damn I would have liked to see the Eagles in there. And the first 3/4 of the game was damn boring. Good thing my neighbor brought over the fixings for Rum Runners and Hawaiian volcanos - it made the lame commercials and even lamer offensive plays more entertaining.

But it was worth the wait. Peachy was just peachy-looking. As I think someone mentioned earlier, Colby was damn hot. I'm definitely on his train. And it was so great seeing Kathy, Lex, Jerri and Rudy again! And yay! for soaking-wet Ethan. Mmmmmmm.
yogi bear
Happy Anniversary, Draadje! I'm glad you got to watch Survivor. I'm not certain I would have gone out to dinner, even if it was my anniversary. But Mr. Yogi seems to enjoy watching me watch Survivor, so he probably wouldn't have even suggested it. When Rudy was talking at the challenge, I started to clap and dance around in my seat. He finds such enthusiasm very amusing.

And Little Yogi is doing much better. Thanks for asking. We took him with us to the Super Bowl party last night. The guy who gave the party is always so kind to him. It's really touching when a man who has thirty to forty guests over for dinner and the game takes time out to talk to a little boy with language trouble. He makes my son feel so good. It's amazing how an act of kindness can touch right through to your soul. The first thing Little Yogi said when we left was "can we come back next year?"

I can't even imagine the ingredients for Hawaiian Volcanos. Wow. And Yum. And Oh my lord, you must have been drunk. Just thinking about drinking a Hawaiian Volcano is making me tipsy. I would like mine in a coconut with an umbrella, please. It's all so fun and Gilligans Islandy!

Ethan is a tasty dish. But I'm a little ashamed, 'cause you know who made me feel warm and toasty? Lex! I never was one for tatoos, but on his arms, it looks good.

Wow, TiVo. It's a good thing!
draadje
Unfortunately, Yogi, my bf doesn't seem to understand my tv addictions at all. He can get quite peeved when I ask him not to call during my favority shows. <sigh> He just doesn't get it</sight>

The host must be really a great man. Never mind a kid with language problems, most grown ups I knew while I was kid didn't even bother talking to me, even though I was a guest in their house as well. Perhaps that's one of the reasons I got completely obsessed with reading (I'm not exagerating, I assure you); it's an easy way to stay entertained at boring adult parties.

Watching parts of the superbowl yesterday once again demonstrated how much a complete mystery American footballl is to me. Most of the time I don't even understand what is going on. They run, pile up on one another and then stop. Repeat several times. What does it mean?
I guess that's why I enjoy soccer much more. I know that the point is to shoot the ball into the goal, and if you can do that without kicking anyone over, you're pretty much homefree.
Hildy
draadje, I don't really see the point of football, either, (although I am a Patriots fan, just b/c of hometown loyalty and all) Glad to hear your bf sanctioned the TV watching! Heck, if he was going to do homework, Survivor sounds like the perfect thing for you to do!
spingirl
Well, my ASS-viewing experience was dampened by the fact that I was surrounded by non-Surviwhores who kept talking through the entire show. I would've driven home to watch the episode, but did not want to miss a second, so I stayed at the Superbowl Party and waited. And waited. And waited some more. It pissed me off, because if I had left after the Patriots won, I would have made it home in time to see Peachy in the chopper.

But I still did a happy Snoopy dance with my puppy (dogs were invited to the party) when the first strains of the Survivor theme song came on. He wasn't sure what to think of that.
AussieGirl
No Hildy, Draadje yesterday's storms were surprisingly not as wild as those in previous days, so we didn't lose power or anything.

Reading this, I wish I could put my arms around Little Yogi and give him a huge hug. He sounds like a great kid! And a credit to you, Yogi.

Well the TV network here is starting to hype up Survivor. This morning on our Aussie Today Show, they even had a 5 minute segment on the All Star castaways and I got to see glimpses of Peachy too! And we're starting to get magazine ads promoting it, but we don't get to see Peachy on TV with interviews etc.

Spingirl I know what you mean about watching Survivor with non-fans (though I'd hesitate to call myself a Survivorwhore!) - it's just not the same. I swear, Survivor is the best show on TV, and the best show that's ever been on TV, and not just because of Peachy, but also the game itself is a great study of human behaviour, something that's always intrigued me.

7 days left to go...waiting, waiting....
yogi bear
I simply don't understand how anyone can watch Survivor and remain detached. I'm sure there is a hot corner in hell for folks who call and/or talk during Survivor - what are they thinking?! It's just sinful to waste a good reality television show on these folks. You just may have to dump the boyfriend over this one Draadje!

I'm so glad you kept the power today, Aussie Girl. Is it like this every summer for you? The weather in Brisbane seems (fill in an appropriate aussie curse, like bloody or something) violent in the extreme. I would be askert!

And Little Yogi is a great kid, definitely no credit going back to me. He was born with the sweetest heart in the world. It just had a few holes. How old is you little one? How's he weathering these crazy storms. They must have canceled school for this weather.

Make sure to see the Survivor replay on Tuesday, spingirl. You and your puppy can snoopy dance in peace. None of those noisy talking non Survivor loving folks allowed.

And all I can say, is how 'bout that breast exposure?!? These crazy Jacksons! Shheeesh. And Justin Timberlake? Those two were probably drinking Hawaiian Volcanos or something.
Skycatcher
He can get quite peeved when I ask him not to call during my favority shows.

The last guy that called during Survivor....I said, "Craig! Survivor's on, you know better than to call me now!" He was so flustered he apologized and hung up. I can't believe I was so rude, but a girl has to have boundaries!

As for the JJ/JT boob-grab event, you'd think they'd done the nasty on stage for all the attention it's getting. If the lyrics are about "I'm going to get you naked before this song is over," isn't it a little coy to object to the boob-job and ignore the lyrics? I would think it was done on purpose, but just one boob? Maybe that was the costume malfunction JT referred to, that only one cup came off. And it's sure put their careers on the front burners. I've heard one radio station in NYC is doing an all JJ day.
vailfiregirl
No kidding on the JT/JJ thing. It "just happened" to happen the right before Janet's cd comes out. The funny thing is during the broadcast, I saw it, but I didn't really think all that much about it - I mean, it looked like a pastie or something, and we've seen that on Lil Kim before in at a major event. It wasn't until I saw the Drudge Report that I realized that it was a piercing instead. Yikes!
caltrask55
I simply don't understand how anyone can watch Survivor and remain detached.

I don't understand it either! I have a friend who says that it's too boring. "People sitting on a beach looking for food? BORING!". I could kick her in the head. Thank God my husband loves the show just as much as I do. It's one of the few shows we share love for.

I also can't tolerate people who call during the show. I have TiVo and could easily pause it but I still get frustrated. Last night my mother called and I paused it but still ended up yelling at her, "Survivor is on!!" heh. She called just to tell me that "Adam Vinatieri is such a living doll". Yes mom. I know. The thing is, my mom doesn't even watch Football but he was on the news and she just had to tell me!! I don't watch Football either! Crazy woman. :)
Kromm
What's the current position of Miss Alli on Ranking threads? I seem to recall her not liking them over on the TAR boards. And yet ASS screams for a ranking thread with the funny title like "Rankings: Who is the most spectacular ASS"? or "Ranking the ASSes".
spingirl
spinboy has given up on trying to dissuade me from devoting an entire evening to Survivor. He understands, somewhat, that while the show itself is only an hour long, the posting to TWOP takes the rest of the night. He just disappears to play video games and leave me to my addiction. He has also learned, finally, that should he be away from the home, not to bother calling during Survivor, because I will not answer. It's all about training, people. If you want a good significant other, you need to be consistent with the training and positive reinforcement...
Skycatcher
It wasn't until I saw the Drudge Report

My Gawd! That is beyond ugly. I'm going to go bleach my eyes now......
AussieGirl
Yogi yes, we do get storms like this every summer, but usually not on6 consecutive day, and not all of them so wildly destructive. My mother lost power for 27 hours, and she's 81, so I was a bit worried about her. The State Emergency crews are still cleaning up the debris and fixing roofs etc. And no, they didn't cancel school, because most of the storms hit about 4pm (in fact, sometimes you can set your watch by them) which is after school finishes. But many people are really concerned about the fact that these children sit in un-airconditioned classes when the temp gets up to the late 30's C. That's bloody hot.

Re Survivor interuptions - at the finale of Pearl Islands, one of my friends who knows what an addict I am, called, but she timed it right in the ad, she knew better than to try me during the show. When I got on the line, I told her she had no more than a minute, and luckily she understood. What she wanted to know was who did I think the best player to win was, and was Jonny Fairplay really such an idiot. So that was alright. She laughs at my obsession, but she also understands how much I love this show.
yogi bear
I just spent the morning taking a class at the Apple store in SoHo. It's like Disney World for the computer lover. Everything looks so fun, beautiful and inviting. I wanted to upgrade everything I own - it's a very dangerous and delightful place.

I think I'm becoming an electronics junkie! It was better when my vice was books. On the other hand, I managed to end up spending a lot of money there too. I won't even get into my shoe obsession. It's not pretty. Or it's very pretty. Or whatever.
Skycatcher
Warning - Danger, Yogi Bear, Danger, Yogi Bear. Put the money down and slowly step back from the wallet. We are here to help you.
yogi bear
Thank you, Skycatcher! I may need an intervention. I have three more classes in my series.

Have you seen the new Ipods? They come in colors. I want a pink Ipod so bad!!!

Is there a twelve step group for Apple users?
AussieGirl
Yogi okay, I give up. What's an Ipod? God, I feel like we're 10 years behind you guys sometimes. No Tivos, Ipods, delayed Survivor....but we do have books. And shoes.
karatekate
AussieGirlYogi okay, I give up. What's an Ipod? God, I feel like we're 10 years behind you guys sometimes. No Tivos, Ipods, delayed Survivor....but we do have books. And shoes.
*Gasp!* No iPod? What do you listen to on the subway? ;-)

Seriously, though, iPods are great. They're small, digital musical storage/players that hold oodles of songs (from their web page: "Do the math: that’s four weeks of music — played continuously, 24/7 — or one new song a day for the next 27 years."). Like a futuristic walkman that exists now. And it's by Apple, so it almost never needs rebooting and is tres user-friendly. But... they run $250-500 and so they're not as wallet friendly as I need them to be to add to my electronics menagerie.
Kromm
iPod has in some ways become a generic for "portable MP3 player", in the same way that "Xerox" was a generic for "photocopying machine".
AussieGirl
*Gasp* No Ipod?  What do you listen to on the subway?
Well, it's like this: we don't have a subway here. See, I told you we were behind the times - LOL! But we do have trains. But thanks KarateKate and Kromm for those descriptions. If/when they come out here, I'm sure my son will want one.
yogi bear
But Ipods arent just for the subway anymore! They have this great bag you can take to the beach and has speakers in the front. Then you can fill the bag with stuff. It's wonderful! I'm sure you son will want one, Aussie Girl, but get one for yourself instead. Heh.

Did I mention they now have them in colors? Like Pink!

Last night, I got caught in the frozen rain downpour that during rush hour without hat, coat, or umbrella. It was miserable. I can't describe the misery of being drenched by icy rain whilst surrounded by soot covered snow drifts. The train was delayed, there were no cabs. Ugh. The charms of New York city were never more elusive.

After all my talk of not interrupting my Survivor, I have gone and invited a friend over for dinner on Thursday night. She's in town from London, and she's working so hard that she's had dinner in her room every night. So I invited her to my house for homemade Minnestrone soup and Eggplant Parm. What do you think - to booring? Usually I do fancy dinners, but maybe she would want simple food after a stressful week and lots of hotel cooking? Anyway, I will probably be watching Surivivor in the middle of the night. What a sacrifice!
TraceyBee
yogi, if your friend thinks minnestrone and eggplant parm. is too boring, I'll come over. That sounds absolutely wonderful, especially at this time of year. Soup is perfect for the cold winter weather that lots of us have been dealing with this year, especially if you're dealing with freezing rain. I can't imagine that your friend wouldn't love it.

My new iMac was delivered yesterday, finally. So cute! So cool! Such a joy to behold!
iMissEthan
What about the power issues with iPods? They look too small to have any kind of battery in them, so I'm guessing you have to charge it up at home? How long does the charge last, and will the thing eventually stop working entirely?
Hildy
Yogi, you're going to the trouble to cook a very nice dinner from scratch. That's pleasure enough, I don't think you need to worry about the food being boring. Particularly after all that hotel food.
Must admit, I lack any sort of an MP3 player. Then again, I also lack TiVo, b/c (again) I lack cable. Luddites unite!
Finally got to watch survivor last night. Yayness! And it's on again tomorrow! Life is good. Particularly since it's not raining out right now, and the temperature is actually above freezing. We might even see 50 degrees today!
Ricci
Hi all wanted to chime in on something..anything! Just cross your fingers that there isn't too much snow this weekend as I am chaperoning a trip to Washington D.c. (42 kids). Then again, too much snow and they will be stuck in the hotel...but I DO want to get back Monday (Hilton or no Hilton)
caltrask55
I'm crossing my fingers for you Ricci.

I'm hoping for good weather next week because my hubby and I are driving from Boston to Florida. I really don't want to leave in a snow storm. We are going to be spending a week in Orlando. I'm really looking forward to it though I'll miss TWoP.

I already have my TiVo set up to record Survivor that week and I still plan on staying in that night to watch it. I need to cover all my bases because knowing my luck, that would be the one show TiVo screws up. I can totally picture myself coming home and finding out the TiVo switched to channel 17 instead of 7.
