LOL! Aussie.
Clint Eastwood and Kyle Secor (Bayliss on Homicide) share my birthday. I'm pretty stoked.

curly, I didn't see your post. Good to see you back, and yes, I'm planning on coming up there. But it's not going to be until next year - probably early spring. We've had a whole bunch of unexpected expenses come up - the most important right is getting the A/C fixed....

You and me both, my friend. I finally announced, on Monday morning, that I was turning on the AC because I was so freakin' miserable. Turning on the AC in May is just wrong. Got nothing done around the apartment, either. Blech.
I never complain about cold weather during the winter (there's a reason I live in Minnesota, after all), so I feel justified in whining during the summer. Hate hot weather. Haaaaaaaaate it!

A-freakin'-MEN!! People look at me like I'm nuts for hating anything over 70F, but the thought of another southern Quebec scorcher with humidity makes me long for the mild Finnish summers. And while I like the cold as much as the next guy, figures I would find the place on earth that has worse winters than home. Next time I shift continents, I need an atlas with meteorological charts.
Wood now there's a sad birthday partner for you. I have a friend who's birthday is September 11th... that one has a whole new meaning for him now.
Hope everyone is well. Nothing much new going on around my end, but it's always nice to drop in and keep up with all of you.

Hee Aussie, sometimes I think the only difference between Northern Texas and Austrailia is the fact that you guys have water near you and the accent lol. I hate Hate cold, but I grew up in a place that it maybe snows one time a year and that's ussaly in Feburary and the next day we need to turn the ac on haha.

Aussie, that's why I visited Brisbane in the middle of winter! It was very pleasant in July.
I lived in Texas for a while, too,
Woody, in Del Rio, and that was brutal. Hot, hot, hot, for days on end. Not as bad as Houston and its horrible humidity, I'm told, but hot. Hothothot.

I refuse to turn on my a/c in May. I try to hold off as long as possible because once I start, it's hard to go back and my electricity bill soars. I used my ceiling fan Monday night, but as long as there is a decent breeze, it can be pretty warm outside and I'm still alright. I don't like overly air conditioned rooms most of the time. My office is freezing and I hate wearing sweaters at work all summer long.
mikkamtl
May 31, 2006 @ 11:04 am
The concept of the A/C is still a little foreign to me. Needless to say, they weren't popular contraptions back home, whereas here they're all the rage. And...well, I find it odd. As much as I suffer through the heat and humidity (suddenly 75 , sunny with about 90% today), a/c makes me miserable and gives me a head cold everytime. I can go in to a mall eprfectly healthy and come back out all sniffly.
A simple fan works for me, even those nights where it's just as hot as during the days. Curly knows what I'm talking about in the Montreal summer, I'm sure. Then again, I usually spend more time in the shower cooling off than anything else on those days, so perhaps I,m doing something wrong.
Woodlock
May 31, 2006 @ 3:58 pm
Today is actually pleasant, I mean it's boiling in my room, but it always stays hot in here but the rest of the house is fine. But sometimes my work can suck cause the a/c is not always reliable (old hotel, cheap managment) and we have to wear long sleave shirts :( Luckily we don't have to wear the blazers.
Also I notice humitidy is a funny thing, like in east Texas I cannot breathe in the summer time because all it is pine trees and the humidity is thick, and here in Wichita Falls, we have almost no trees, its conciderd like rolling plains or some nonsence, but it's humid and its horrible but I can breathe, but I could be used to it I dunno.

I know just what you mean, Suction. I love them too, as long as they're not set to freezing. But it's so expensive to have them installed (we have an open plan house), and we rent, and each summer I say we'll get by with just the fans. But last summer was just the most brutal ever, and we're thinking we just have to move (this house is a few degrees hotter than any other place). So, we end up at the movies, in a pool, or in shopping centres, just to escape.
Woody, I must have missed something - I didn't realise you were in Wichita Falls - isn't that in Kansas? Trying to remember my US geography - isn't that a long way from Texas? And I think you are right in your comparison of OZ and Northern TX, except it never snows in Brisbane!
Gotta laugh at your "very pleasant in July" comment, Tracey. It's nowhere near pleasant right now, temps 10 degrees Celsius below normal. The best times to visit here are Spring (Sept/Oct) and Autumn (March/April).
I used to work in an office like that IME. In the middle of summer, the AC would be so cold I'd bring a heater to work!
Mikka, what is the usual top summer temp in Finland? And what is the coldest winter temp? Do you have those 24 hours daylight in summer and hardly any light in winter? Mr Aussie/Montana used to live in Greenland, and used to tell me stories of how he'd be coming out of pub at 2am and it would still be daylight, heh. Hard to imagine - here, in winter it gets dark about 5pm, and in summer about 7pm (without daylight saving). When I was in Texas, I remember going out to a nightclub at about 10pm, and it was just starting to get dark - kinda weird.
We're going to the Sunshine Coast tomorrow for 2 nights, and I am really looking forward to the break. But there'll be no swimming for us. Just nice walks along the beach, all rugged up!

Well, Aussie, because we're quite a long country, the climate varies greatly from the far north down to the south. I was born up north in Lapland, and lived there during my early childhood, so my personal recollection on some of it is a little hazy, but we do have the midnight sun phenomenon up there, but it's not a full 24 hours of light or dark. Down in the southwest, where I used to live, the winters are fairly mild. averaging temps around -5C. The sun is a little lazy down there too in the winter, getting up fairly late-- 8 or 9 am, and setting mid afternoon.
Summer temps are nice, usually mid twenties. We make up for the lazy sun then with a good amount of light... 5 am to 10pm at the most. THe reason the weather is so mild is that we have some Gulf Stream influences even all the way up there. What I love about the weather the most in the southern Finalnd is that it's not given to extremes of hot or cold. Of course, when we get a snowstorm in the winter though, now that's another story. But frankly, I'd rather not think about winter time right now :)

Heh, I wish, Mikka. And you didn't kill the thread, Woody. It's been dead for many months, it seems.
So anyway, we're having school holidays here, which is nice. I think I like it even more than the kids - no morning rush to get them ready, no driving back and forth to school, no homework hassles. Unfortunately, it's only for two weeks. We're not doing much, probably we'll go and see Cars, and maybe go to MovieWorld (a theme park on the Gold Coast). My youngest hasn't been really well, so I've been waiting till he's better.
And that's about all the news from this side of the world!

It's the "summer" holidays here as well. I use quotes because it won't stop raining. I'm trying my hand at a garden, and my greens are grwoing like mad witht he rain, but the rest all seems scraggly.
I am officially hating my tiny-ass town and nedd to get out of it. Having painted myself itno a corner here--long story-- I just don't know how I can go about breaking a lease, etc, and move back to the city with the money I've been making. One of the things the country has going for it is that the cost of living is low. OF course, maybe that's because here, there is no... living.

It sucks when you seem to be stuck somewhere, but would it be more tolerable if you set up a plan for moving, say, in a year or two? You know, plan to move when the lease is up, and start doing a long-distance job search (plus saving money) right away? I don't know your situation, of course, but I've found that it's easier to put up with bad present if you know the future will be different.
On a personal note, I'd just like to say that right now I have the awesomest toenails ever, thanks to the lovely hot-pink nail polish given to me by our beloved

Thank you
TracyBee. The biggest problem I had with the decision to leave Montreal and move to a smaller town, I think, was that I didn't fully think it through. I have a history of making some pretty huge spur of the moment decisions--moving to Canada from Finland was one of them-- and this is my first taste of a bad plan. You do make a lot of sense, and I certainly am planning this next move away from The Town much more carefully. I apologize, here and now, for any future venting.

Well Mikka, send some of that rain down here - it's sorely needed! Australia is in the midst of the worst drought in history, our dams are drying up so fast, and we're on Level 3 Water restrictions. It's rained a bit where I live, but not in the catchment areas.
And it's funny - I seem to have the opposite problem to you - I desperately want to move away from the city and back to a small town! I really miss the country life, sigh... But it won't be happening till my oldest son finishes high school. But anyway, you don't need to apologise for any venting - it's understandable.
Tracey, next time you and Suction come down here, let's all paint our toenails! But I think I prefer red to hot pink, heh!
Hey Woodymate! The weather down here? No rain, but not much sunshine either (given that Queensland is the Sunshine State), but at least it's not as cold as it was some weeks back. All in all, not too bad for winter. As for MovieWorld, well there are a lot of rides, and they do stunts like in the movies, but I'm not sure what else there is. But if you were here, I'd take you there for sure!

I'm officially done with the hotel yay! I went out with a couple of people from work, we all hated the place and agreed we go watch a drag show next time, and my ex co-workers are both straight, one male and one female lol I love open minded people in this town, its like a dimond in the rough.

Jul 1, 2006 @ 5:47 am
Okay, okay! I'll take you all to MovieWorld. We went there today, and while my youngest child enjoyed it, it wasn't the best Theme Park we've been to by a long shot. Kind of a cross between Hollywood and Disneyland, or a poor imitation thereof. But if you like roller coasters, you'll love it! They had 4 of them! Unfortunately, if you're a teenager and not too keen on roller coasters, you'll get bored, as my oldest did. Also, it was very hot (yeah, I know - winter in the tropics), and while sitting in the stands we all got sunburnt.
My youngest particularly liked it when Daffy Duck sat down at our table at lunch and tried to eat his pumpkin soup, heh! I've never seen my child eat his soup so fast!
But overall, I think Sea World is the best theme park on the Gold Coast, we had season tickets for there and always had a good time, regardless of age.
So Woody, are you saying you've finished working at the hotel for good?
Mikkamate, package up that rain, and quick!

Tonight's (11-30-06) Tribal Council was probably one of the best TC ever!!! You had fighting, bickering, accusations flying around, making out and Jeff Probst busting on Candice about getting a kiss but not an idol! Priceless. IMO.

I have a dream, a TC dream, that is.
Let's say Becky or Ozzy orchestrated a way to get rid of Yul's idol, and also get rid of Jonathan...no matter how much I adore YUL, I think that the idol needs to be taken out of the picture by the other players so they're all on an even footing again (as even as you get in this game.) So if I was Becky, I would rendezvous with Yul as I always do, and convince him that we both should vote Jonathan. I'd fill Ozzy and Sundra in on the plan, but have Ozzy vote Adam and Sundra vote Parvati. Somehow, somehow get into the little brains of Raro, and get Parvati, Adam, and then also Jonathan to vote Yul....just to get rid of the idol...but it would have to be convincing enough to all three that none of them would be voted out.
That would leave us with:
Yul vote Jonathan
Becky vote Jonathan
Sundra vote Parvati
Ozzy vote Adumb
Jonathan vote Yul
Parvati vote Yul
Adumb vote Yul
Thus, 3 votes Yul, 2 Jonathan, 1 Parvati, 1 Adam. Bye-bye idol, bye Jonathan, and the Aitu alliance didn't cast any votes for Yul. And he is such a rational player anyways, I think he would be impressed at how people outwitted him. But he would also know that Parvati and Adumb aren't smart enough to orchestrate such a feat. Maybe he would think it was Jonathan and that Jonathan just got outplayed by the other Aitus.
But Yul's so smart, he probably knew I was going to post this on the TWoP forums, months after he played the actual game.
