i HATED the frog/clone thing.. I still remember watching the season finale where L&C got married and then L goes into the bathroom and her tongue flips out and eats a bug. I was pretty young then, junior high/elementary age, but i never watched another episode after that. The built up the whole wedding thing and then made it so convienient to pull the same ratings grope a year later...but this time for real! argh... i liked this show a lot though and every once in a while will catch it on the French channel and pretend that I know what the hell is going on..
MsHighStrung
You ladies and gentlement utterly crack me up. I thank you : ). I am totally loving the Creepy Jimmy vs Oily Jimmy discussion. As is evident here, some people have such complete allegiance to one Jimmy, and total loathing toward the other. I'm not as passionate about the Jimmy character as some, but I do have a preference for Justin Whalin's portrayal of the character (though I'm not going to start debating it with anyone : ).

In the wake of the untimely death of Jonathan Brandis (Jumpermuffin, I recognize you from the wonderful discussions about Jon, so I know you know this, but I'm repeating information for those who might not remember: Jonathan's series "seaQuest" aired directly opposite "Lois & Clark" at 8 PM on Sundays for two seasons. Both series underwent extensive retooling by the networks (which explains L&C's jump from romantic comedy in the first season, to action/adventure in the first half of the second season, and then back to romantic comedy again) as part of efforts to produce a clear "winner" in that time slot, since both series were being trounced by "Murder She Wrote." Ultimately, as ABC realized that fans actually wanted to see a romantic comedy, and less of a "Superman show," and Lois and Clark's relationship was allowed to progress, L&C's ratings skyrocketed and it outperformed both "Murder" and "seaQuest," which were both forced to move to new nights.), I recently learned something very interesting about the decision to change the actor portraying Jimmy.

Apparently, while L&C captured the key demographic of adult women (thanks to Dean), it did not appeal as strongly to teenage girls, whose affections were otherwise devoted to a certain "seaQuest" star. So, Michael Landes was fired, and a casting call went out for a "Jonathan Brandis type" to play Jimmy during the second season. I loved Justin's portrayal of Jimmy, but if he was supposed to be emulating Jonathan in looks or acting style, he completely missed the mark! (A friend of mine who appreciated Michael Landes, but couldn't stand Justin commented, "They should have just cast Jonathan himself if they wanted a 'Jonathan Brandis type!" Now, that's an idea!
Clockstomper24
Apparently Dean Cain is going to play Scott Peterson in an upcoming USA movie about the double homicide. Cain looks pretty much like Peterson with the beard...still, who'd have thought to cast him?
Lxndr
Although I prefer Justin Whalin's portrayal of Jimmy (at least in his first season, before the overall writing seemed to stumble), I didn't mind Michael Landes, and I'm still irked that they changed the casting of a major character. This is a principle thing for me.

I'd also say that the first season wasn't "romantic comedy." Romantic, yes - "comedy", not as much. The emphasis on "comedy" (often emphasizing it OVER "romantic") was when the writing started to fail. At least for me.

I just found this thread.

I really did enjoy this show. I think my favorite season was the beginning of the third. But I got rather annoyed with all the 2 or 3 episode arcs they had. I think they had like 3 of those in the last season.

I really hope there is a dvd set soon. I hope they don't cheap us out on them. I hope for some commentary and some behind the scenes stuff. I dunno whatelse they put on drama dvds.

I myself tried L&C fanfic once. I had a bunch of half finished stories. I think the one I put a lot of thought into the most was a cross over between Lois and Clark and um *don't laugh*... Silk Stalkings. Yeah, I was 15 at the time and those were my two favorite shows. It somehow invovled an earthquake at the Daily Planet and L&C coming to work at the Palm Beach Paper. or something. and it invovled some new kyrptonite, and the return of Mindi Church.

I was a weird one.
Amalthea
I was a fan of the 2nd Jimmy. Whoever called the first one creepy--right on. He always skeeved me out a bit. I liked Lois better with her long hair, though, and I missed Cat after she left.

This show had rather catchy theme music...I'm humming it at the moment, and I haven't seen the show since it ended (don't get TBS, unfortunately).
Sandbagger1
I loved the first season so much, and some of the lines were hilarious. In the episode where Clark's stuff gets stolen, Lois introduces him to someone she knows with a hand in some of the minor Metropolis underworld. The actor was Robert Costanza, I believe. Every time he was asked how he could find something or someone, his reply, "Ah, I know guys who know guys."

I still use that one myself.
febutterfly
I always prefered his Clark to his Superman.

I agree. I thought the perfect combination would be Dean Cain's Clark and Christopher Reeve's Superman. Hated the greasy, slicked-back "Wall Street" Superman hair Dean Cain always had, and how his Superman's stern facial expression never changed.

Lane Davies? Loved him. Loved him as Mason on Santa Barbara (quit watching the show when he left), and as Tempus.

Oh, and my college-years fanfic? I might win the prize on the most cringeworthy plot: My Superman had dropped the name Clark Kent and was now using his real name as Commander Kal-el on - yes - the Enterprise under Captain Picard! I can't believe I'm even admitting that. My only comfort is, one cold night at my grandmother's house, I stuffed all those pages in the fire.

Edited because I'm a dork and Lane Davies did NOT star in a short-lived western with Richard Dean Anderson. Can't believe I mixed him up with John deLancie.

To me John Shea will always be Lex Luthur, anytime I see him in anything I still think "He was Lex in Lois and Clark" Folks I was in freaking middle school at the time (it seems so long ago) but I remeber cheering every time Lex came back from the dead.

While John Shea will always be Lex Luther to me, Lex is no longer John Shea in my mind. It might be my massive love of Michael Rosenbaum, but that's who Lex is for me now.

Hmmm...How can you guys forget Gene Hackman? (But if you're relagating this ti TV based Luthors, then forgive me.) They all put nice spins on the character. I must admit John Shea is a very good Lex Luthor (I credit Lex's "death" with the decline of the show. Something about Lex being there all the time that raised the stakes, although Tempus was good... Even now, when I see Shea as Mutant X's Adam Kane, he still reminds me of his Lex at times, what Rosenbaum's should become (personality-wise) in some ways.

As for the Clarks, it's like comparing apples and oranges here, since Cain's was the CK we know and love, and Welling's is still trying to become theat CK we know and love.

As for the Kents, same thing.

Too close to call on both counts.

Overall, it was a good show, and I did like certain later shows. (The one where Lois and Clark basically had former lives in former time periods (with Tempus), and they had to go back and correct Tempus' counterpart screwing up things, therefore restoring the balance in the universe, and paving the way for Lois and Clark to consummate their relationship is one of my favorite eps. Although, it was interesting to note that it was originally was designed for Lex's counterparts to be in the time periods as well, as it should've been, but then again, the Tempuses (??) did a good job.)

According to tvshowsondvd.com, Warners has said that L&C is in discussion for dvd release but no plans yet.
MsHighStrung
Actually, those words are from someone's recap of the event, which basically consisted of lumping the "word on the shows" into general categories. I read the transcript of the Home Theatre Forum Q&A with Warner Bros. reps. The first time L&C was brought up, WB responded with a, "it's under consideration, possibly for a release early next year." However, the second time someone asked a question about L&C (about the format of the episodes), WB answered, "When Lois & Clark comes out, it will be OAR (Original Aspect Ratio.)" I'm taking the *when* (versus an "if") as a very positive sign.
lula stream lar
Ah yes, Lois & Clark. Or what I like to call Superman for girls (and I don't mean that in a bad way.) <sigh> If only TWoP had been around when this was on. I would love to have seen this show recapped.

Sadly I was well out of junior high, high school and college when this was on, but I never missed an episode. I thought it was a goofy-fun-campy-show that did romance really well.

Season 1,2,3 or 4: Liked them all. Granted S4 was weak, weak, weak, but had its moments.
Jimmy1 or Jimmy2: didn't care either way
Cat or No Cat: Awh hell, I did miss Cat.
Clone/frog ark: loved it! Part of the goofy-fun-campy-absurd aspect of the show I liked. Hmmm...kind of reminded me of a comic book style plot. Imagine that?
Clark or Superman: definately Clark. Superman was a dweeb who ran funny.
Long or Short Hair: didn't matter to me, but that S4 wig had to go!
lynettefl
I loved this show so much. It was *the* show in Fall 1993. I loved the chemistry between Lois and Clark. The UST was potent.
kat_may
Damn TWoP... every time I manage to get some random old show out of my head, a thread like this pops up and I remember that I used to be obsessed. Anyway I'm remembering an episode which could get me absolutely laughing hysterically, and I'd actually love to find my tape of it... it was very early, and a Christmas ep. There was some kind of juvenile spell/germ/hypnosis or whatever and everyone was acting like children. Lois called up her sister and squealed that she wasn't sharing any of her food -- I don't know, I clearly remember her delivery being hilarious. Anyone know what I'm talking about?
Rockstar99435
I remember that one. There was a toy or something that made all the adults act like kids. Clark used his his heat-vision to break Lois' heel on her shoe causing her to fall, then he used his super-speed to inhale a tube of M&M's.
scratcheyes
What I really liked about that episode was that after Clark burnt off Lois' heel, Ma Kent dragging Clark off by the ear and scolding him. Leave it to Mom to teach Superman some manners!

My all-time favorite L&C bit... "glasses on, glasses off.... duh" galactically stupid! That Tempus had a way with words.
PhantomChic
"How galactically stupid was she?" I have an unnatural love for that phrase and use it way too often. Though lately it's often actually been regarding Lois Lane, just a different one.
falimako
I just found this, and I am so. excited. I was the hugest Lois and Clark fan. I actually had all of S2, 3, and 4 taped on video.
I was about thirteen when the show came to Australia, and I used to cut out every picture I could find of Lois and Clark, and stick them up in my room. Then I got my hair cut into the Lois bob, and you have no dea how excited I was when random people started telling me I looked like Lois. I cringe remembering it now, but I would so buy the series on DVD.
I always hated how suddenly the show ended. The last episode I remember being shown here was Superman leaving to go into space for some reason, and Lois crying and telling him he had to come back. Does anyone remember this?
kariyaki
That wasn't how it ended. I believe that whole thing with Lois crying over Superman going into space was the Zara arc but that resolved and everything was status quo. The way the show really ended was Lois & Clark having a bit of trouble conceiving because of Clark's alien physiology and then they found a baby on their doorstep. And boom, that was it for the show. Talk about maddening...
falimako
Ugh, that sucks even more then, because we obviously never got that season. I would definitely remember L & C trying to have a baby! Stupid Aussie networks!

Someone loves me.

First Silk Stalkings, now Lois and Clark is coming to DVD next. And I don't even have the first season on tape. This is very good news. I hope they can set up some good bonus features.

In honor of Teri Hatcher’s Golden Globe win, I dragged this thread out of mothballs. This was the first show I ever truly ‘loved.’ I know it was cheesy as all get-out, but for my then-preteen heart, the Lois & Clark relationship was just soooo romantic. Heh. Of course, IMHO, it got really bad after that clone storyline, and by the time Justine Bateman’s “dynamic” turn as an alien came around, well I just couldn’t watch it anymore …

My all-time favorite L&C bit... "glasses on, glasses off.... duh" galactically stupid! That Tempus had a way with words.

Yeah, that was pretty darn good. Another one of my favorite moments was in the “Clark gets shot” episode: Lois thought he was dead, and when she found out he wasn’t, she was so happy she came running at him to give him a huge hug and got wet cement all over him. Awww. Any L&C fans still left out there?

This was one of the first shows I ever really "loved" too, other than like Mister Rogers (if that even counts). I was always and still am a huge Superman fan. Teri Hatcher was one of my very earliest celebrity crushes and still is. The DVDs start rolling out at some point this year, and I really can't wait. Even though I loved the show, we didn't get ABC that well at my house so I rarely got to watch it on a regular basis, although I can remember going over to my grandparents' house whenever I could just to be able to watch this.

OMG I totally didn't know there was a thread for this show. This was also my first true TV love. I used to watch it almost everyday after school and then they showed it before school and it was all good. ITA that the L/C relationship was sooo romantic when I started watching the show. I remember that once I had seen the whole series I would prefer to watch episodes where they were together. I would see an episode and be like "Lois has long hair...probability they're together...slim seeing as they're only together for like three 'long-hair' episodes." God, I forgot how obsessed I used to be with this show. Thank you for this trip down memory lane.
The 2nd Evil
I used to watch some episodes on TNT. I'm glad DVDs are coming out soon.

Are the DVDs ready yet? Huh? Huh? Are they ready yet?? *sigh*

That would be, That Old Gang of Mine. That's a favorite episode for a substantial number of people...err...well, I like it, anyway.

For anyone experiencing withdrawal until the DVDs arrive, there's a huge database of surprisingly excellent fanfic out there based on the show. I recommend it.
SilvaVocat
This was one of my favorite shows when I was a teenager. Sigh...Dean Cain...Sigh...Dean Cain shirtless. And there was always one shirtless shot per episode. If I'd been older I would have incorporated it into a drinking game.
Peace_47
I wonder how the demographics skewed on that show, since it seems many posters here liked the show at a young age.
And there was always one shirtless shot per episode.

Yeah, they did shoehorn it in there, didn't they? Good times.

Ah, a title to go with the memories. Thanks! So, not a big fan of that ep yourself, eh?

One thing I liked about the first Tempus episode where Lois finds out the truth about Clark (only to “forget” it during subsequent time travel): It provided the catalyst for her to eventually learn the truth for real. IIRC (big "IF"), Tempus’ diary somehow ended up in the hands of that one villain. Lois had to be frozen to defeat him, and it was nearly dying that helped her realize that Clark was Superman. I just remember being impressed with the way that storyline was interwoven at the end of S2. Yup. I'm definitely going to have to rent the DVDs when they come out.
BoE

Oh, my gosh...I LOVE the episode!!! It really is one of my favorites. I just didn't want to generalize and speak for "a substantial number of people." I guess I wasn't very clear. Hee. Sorry!

I'm curious about the demographics myself. I was around 15 when the show started, and I loved it, yet I love it still and will try to catch it whenever it's being aired.

Sigh...Dean Cain...Sigh...Dean Cain shirtless.

Oh, WORD.

This show is the reason why I could never really get into Smallville. I've watched it a couple of times, but the picture of Lois & Clark is always so present in my mind, if Smallville was to have any sense of credibility to me, the exact L&C storyline would have to be where it ended up at [does that make sense? I'm tired], and the writers have screwed that up. I wouldn't mind Cain's Clark havin' been friends with Rosenbaum's Lex in his past, but getting to know Lois before the L&C pilot? Just. Not.
Mr. Lilac
Another fan of the show when I was a teenager. I believe I was 13 or 14 when the show first aired, and I remember having to give up Seaquest in order to watch it. Sunday nights were always a treat due to L&C.

I think my favorite episode was when Superman had to go push the comet away and ended up losing his memory. It was great to see Clark fumble around and Lois trying to help him.

I don't think there will ever be a Lois Lane quite like Teri Hatcher. She made Lois Lane not only neurotic, but also incredibly sexy and smart. IMO, she stole the show when it was seemingly all about Superman.

I can't wait for the DVDs!
LexClark4ever
Any L&C fans still left out there?

*waves hand enthusiastically*

I love that show.
Curare
I think Teri Hatcher was the best Lois. She was sexy and fun. I really liked the first few season of this show.
LexClark4ever
I know of a good Lois & Clark message board that I'll post the link to if anyone's interested:

Hannibal Khan
I still love that show. Teri Hatcher by far was the most palatable Lois.

I still say that they should have made Chloe into Lois, and just never introduced an actual Lois. That's what I get for hoping on a throwaway line.
jlco123
I loved this show so much but I didn't get to watch that many episodes at my house when I was a kid. I can't wait until the dvds are released. It will be great to see this show again. L&C is what started my love of Dean Cain. He was no Christopher Reeves but he did a great job on this show.
Bee
Oh man, between the ages of 7 and 11 Dean Cain was the ONLY man for me! I was absolutely obsessed with him, I had a little corner dedicated to him in my bedroom. Then Friends came along and L&C got cruelly replaced as top dog in my affections!

I'd love to see it on DVD though, I also remember the 'adults as kids' episode, I think it was one of my favourites.
BrianneG
If only there were more activity on this board, I would definitely see if we could pool our funds and get a L&C episode recapped for "Tubey's Kids." Personally, I'd pick the one from 1st season where they had to stay in the Honeymoon Suite. (Sorry, can't remember the episode title.)
LexClark4ever

The title is "Honeymoon In Metropolis". I loved that one, especially the scene where Clark and Lois are arguing over who gets the bed and Clark says "It's a big bed. How about we share?" and Lois quickly says "How about we alternate nights?".
Munchiewoman
Clark says "It's a big bed. How about we share?"

The way he said that was absolutely perfect. A little teasing, knowing she wouldn't agree, but doing what he can to get her riled. Which was one of the things I loved about this show. Clark was a master at pushing her buttons and she was adorable when she got going. I love that episode.

I also love the one with the nightclub, with Lois getting jealous of the blonde. And the one with the love potion, especially Lois being embarrassed after the fact.

Ah, good times.
BrianneG
And the one with the love potion, especially Lois being embarrassed after the fact.

Oh, totally. I completely forgot about the dance of the seven veils. But I'd still pick the Honeymoon suite episode first. Now I'm going to have to dig out my old VHS tapes to keep me occupied till the DVDs come out.

Great episode. I loved the part where he passionately kissed Lois to maintain their cover as the cleaning lady walked into the room. (As if she wouldn't have knocked!) Totally contrived, but enjoyable nonetheless. I don't even remember why Lois and Clark were in the suite doing surveillance in the first place. I just vividly remember all those cute little moments between them: when they played board games and she got ultra-competitive, or when they talked about how hard it would be to share a living space with someone (as they awkwardly went about their "getting ready for bed" routines in the bathroom). Anything shipper-y like that in the series, and I was a puddle on the floor.

Is there any chance for cast commentary on the DVDs? TH is a huge star again, so I wonder if she would still be interested.

cast commentary on the DVDs

I think that's required by law these days (or something). I'm sure it'll be in there, although probably not on every episode.
MsHighStrung
The Season One DVDs (coming out in a little over a week!) will feature commentary on the pilot by Dean Cain, series creator Deborah Joy Levine, and Robert Butler, the director of the pilot. The DVDs will have both versions of the pilot (the one that aired in the US and a longer version that aired in the UK), so I'm not sure whether the commentary applies to the "original" pilot or the edited, US version. The DVDs will also feature new interviews with Dean Cain and Teri Hatcher. They were both interviewed separately. (For her interview, Teri's on the set of Desperate Housewives.) There's also a documentary about the series' special effects and easter eggs, and Levine introduces the original pilot.
Jempilot
Does anyone have any idea when Seasons 2-4 are scheduled to be released? (I hesitate to say "if" they're being released, because I want them.)
rikraq
The dvd is mine! Woo hoo.
MsHighStrung
Season Two is currently scheduled for release some time in 2006. (I'm presuming this means early 2006.) The release of Seasons Three & Four all depend upon the sales of One and Two, of course. Since Season One is selling very well on Amazon (especially for a show that aired its last episode eight years ago, isn't in syndication, and hasn't gotten the most promotion, compared to many shows) and since the ratings steadily increased from Season One to Season Three, I think, barring some freak circumstances, Seasons Three and Four are in the bag.
rikraq
I've only watched the pilot so far and I already hate Tracey Scoggins' character, Cat. I never realized how manly she looked. Her deep voice and bushy eyebrows. I'm glad they got rid of her.

Dean Cain and Teri Hatcher had great chemistry.
