I always remember the song "Who is he Kissing" I hope I still have my Jem cassettes somewhere. I had most of the Jem dolls, plus Rio, and all of the Misfits dolls. Does anyone remember the cheesy Shangri-La episode? It stands out in my mind for some reason.

Maybe it stands out because of the uber-cheesy song that went "Shangri-Laaaaaaa (Shangri-Laaaaa). Where are you hiding?". Or because of the remade video of "You Oughta See the View From Here", with the Misfits running around in the snow flapping their arms like idiots? That was unforgivable. "Journey to Shangri-La" was seriously one of the worst episodes ever.
Of course, I'm going to pop in the CD and watch it right now.

The hook to "Shangri-La" was seriously the only bit of a JEM! song that I could remember until I found the files online, and that includes the title song. Now, which episode is worst? The one where they go back in time, the magic and illusion episode, or the Shangri-La episode. I say the Shangri-La one.
And I still lurve Riot.
Has Rhino come out with the DVDs yet? Oh please, oh please, oh please. *tippy-toe dance*

Wow, you've really scraped the bottom of the barrel for those episodes. I think the time-travelling one was the worst because of the nonstop stupidity. The Shangri-La one comes close, though. I mean, Stormer falls hundreds of feet with a rope around her waist, and instead of breaking her back or being ripped in two (ew), nothing bad happens? Plus, there's the lameness that I mentioned above. And the contrivance that sent them to Tibet was even more contrived than usual. The band's creative well has run dry, so....some guy sends them on this dangerous mountain expedition to find some mythical city? Why not just hit some old music store and try listening to something new & different?
Ah well. Still no new DVD news yet :(

Hey, I thought someone would beat me to this, but yay, I get to be the bearer of good news:
(from
tvshowsondvd):
Jem is adventure...in May!
Last Fall we told you that Jem was coming on DVD the first half of 2004.
Rhino has now gotten back to us, and tells us to look for Jem - Seasons 1 and 2 combined together in one package. The truly outrageous release - consisting of the 5-part miniseries that comprised the "first season" and all 21 episodes from the second - will happen in mid-May.
There's no word yet on extras or any other details, but the earlier report from the Jem fansite indicated a 4-disc set that had the above-mentioned 26 episodes, plus commentaries and an an interview with series creator Christy Marx. Stay tuned...we'll be back when the official announcement comes through.

I just found it kind of odd that they consider the first five episodes to be the entire "first season". But I guess it makes sense, since those eps aired a year before the other ones. So...is everything after "Glitter and Gold" the third season, or is the Stingers era considered season 4?

So...is everything after "Glitter and Gold" the third season, or is the Stingers era considered season 4?
You're right that, a bit.
Glitter and Gold was the end of the second season.
The Stingers hit Town is the kick off to the final 11 episodes of the third season, which started with
The Talent Search, which is when Shana leaves the Holograms to become a fashion designer and Raya takes her place, and Jetta joins the Misfits. Therefore, new dolls. (Don't worry, Shana comes back and plays the guitar instead of the drums!)
There was never a season 4, as the show was pulled after hitting 65 episdoes (syndication for cartoons back then, I think) when the toy company realized they weren't selling as many Stingers dolls as they had anticipated, and were not going to launch the new dolls they had planned.
I remember reading an interview with the creator of the show, Christy Marx, who said she was giving enough notice to write a finale, which she did
A Father Should Be, which inlcuded the song "This is Farewell". Quite touching, actually, to this 12-year-old blossoming gay kid.
Glitter and Gold was just a big deal because that was when they launched a new line of the dolls with new clothes, new car and new playsets and shit like that.
I swear, guys, I never once bought a doll or toy or anything. I'm all abou the show, and if having to know about the dolls is a requirement, well, then so be it.
Any other Jem questions? I bet I can get them all.
Any other really wild Jem questions? I bet I can get them all.

Hey, the
notice has been updated and now they say that adventure begins in April.
Note from Gord - Oops, I messed this one up. The original story mentioned May as the release date, but this was wrong. The correct month is April! I had scratched out a different date and wrote April over it, but "May" was above my scratched out date, but that was for a different product. Sorry for the confusion (and sorry for wrecking your news Dave!).

The Holograms go off looking for Shangri-La, and the Misfits, like usual, catch wind of the plan and go off looking too.
Along the way, a girl from a local village is doing the whole "i'm useless to my culture and family" and ends up helping the Misfits try to find shangri-la, there's an abominal snowman, and there's a scene where Jem has to turn into Jerrica in front of an old woman because "She's false" and the old woman can only give the map to shangri-la to someone who is not false, and the Misfits get really sick from somoe thorns, and only the music of Shangri-la is the only thing that brings the back to life!
It was a really dumb episode.
And how my mother didn't know I was gay then, either beats the hell out of me.

There was also more Kimber and Stormer action in the Shangri-la ep. Why yes, I do heart Kimber & Stormer. Why do you ask? The Misfits and Holograms are climbing up the mountain, and Stormer falls on top of Kimber, or something like that. Kimber quips: "Oooo, Stormer! You need to go on a diet!"

Yeah, I was just wondering because didn't the show only run in first run for like two years in the mid-80s? And then in reruns until '88 or something? I can't imaging it having appealed to a younger crowd, without reruns to attract them, or older crowds, as they might have been too old for this series anyway.
All I know is this is the only show that's ever made me wish that I was born a female punk rocker, because through 65 episodes, they should did have a shitload of fun and an even more larger shitload of money.
I'm not a cross dresser, I swear.

21 year old guy.
I think I watched pretty much every cartoon that was available on Canadian television (and the few U.S. stations we got at the time, like Fox) in the mid-to-late `80s/early `90s. Catching the "girly" shows like She-Ra (which probably had the most crossover appeal--especially with the few literal crossovers with He-Man it had--between the genders) was just as important as catching the ones that were targeted at a male demographic (but thankfully appealed to a whole lot of girls as well, which just goes to show you that the people involved in marketing don't understand little kids very well, and just how much of a non-issue the gender-specific categorizing of a cartoon is to them as long as the show's entertaining and there aren't outside influences like their parents telling them not to watch it or their friends making fun of them). I watched My Little Pony, Rainbow Bright, and probably whatever else was on that I'm forgetting, but I think She-Ra and Jem are the only must-haves as far as DVDs go. Especially Jem since I have the foggiest memory of what happened and wouldn't mind being reminded over those 65 episodes (plus an unaired pilot? What was the deal with that? It was released to VHS only?)

I may be in the minority, but I liked the Stingers. My favorite episode was the

Starri, good to see you in here, too. It's a toss-up for me, though, on Trans vs. Jem, really, since both define my childhood.
I think my favorite episode has to be the one where they're on the magic island, and they all start disappearing one by one. They use "Music is Magic" in that episode, too, but I still like it.
It's way better than the "Don't Use Drugs" episode with stupid little Laura. "Gotta find Bobby. Bobby will help me now!"
I hated the Stingers! Every single episode could have been done with the Misfits instead. Just subbing in one of them for the other stuff. They didn't play up the Rio/Riot stuff enough for my tastes.

I wasn't a big Stingers fan either. They took away from the Misfits. And I was downloading some episodes off that site and Riot is skeeving me out. He rigged Rio's car to break so Jem would be mad at him and run off with him (Riot) and then tricked her onto getting on a boat bound for Mexico.

Also, does anyone else get all confused & frustrated whenever they see a reference to that (real-life) singer Jem? On Friday, I was leafing through the new EW when I was going up the stairs from my mailbox, and, knowing that the DVD was coming out this week, I was kind of excited to see an article about JEM in the TOC. I'm not the only dork, though. When I bought it, three of my fellow employees were bitching about how they forgot that it came out today. Someday, I'd like to complete my doll collection, when I can afford it. If only She-Ra came out on DVD, my life would be complete.
Oh me too! That was one of my favorite shows!
I'm 23 and the main thing I remember about Jem is the damned Shangri La song. Seriously, I'll be sitting at work and for no reason the song will pop into my head along with a mental image of Pizazz groaning over being cut by the thorns. I haven't seen or heard anything from the show since the mid eighties and yet I think of that song at the weirdest times.
I also remember that Stormer and Kimber were my favorites. I remember some little girl going blind and also the ep with the contest between the Holograms and Misfits where whoever sold the most records got the car (I think this was Glitter and Gold).
I had a Jem doll and I think a Stormer one. A friend down the street had Pizazz. I also remember a TV commercial advertising that "Jem is bigger than Barbie!". That did tick me off though and was probably the reason I was never big on Jem dolls. There weren't enough accessories to really play with them and all of Barbie's were too small. I mean Jem was an Amazon compared to Barbie. I think if the Jem dolls had been made the same scale as Barbie they would have sold much better. I did have the guitar/stage playset. You know the tape player shaped like a guitar that you could set up as Jem's stage. It had neon colored lightening bolts and mic stands that always fell over.
Wow, I think I may just have to buy this DVD set, my boyfriend will think I'm nuts.
