More encouragement:

It's already been mentioned, but here's the direct link to the Freaks & Geeks DVD sign-up, plus Judd Apatow's set-in-stone "it's coming out in April" message (I know he says they'll be making an official announcement this month, but it's still a for sure thing).
Gracelessly
Will start saving money right now in order to get them the day they are released.
DMW_SFU
I can't wait for this release, or that of Undeclared. Is Judd the most mistreated, misunderstood genius alive or what? I can't believe he loses two amazing shows while people like David E. Kelly get a new show every other day.

The world is unfair. Or just plain stupid...
Elliot
I vote for "stupid".

Would love to see a "10th reunion" special, or some such. Gimmicks like that often disappoint, but I'd take a chance in this case if it was to happen.
iMissEthan
Paul Feig's movie "I Am David" is being shown in NYC this Sunday at 3:45 pm in conjunction with the NY Times arts & leisure weekend. Go to the site to download a pass, and you can get a ticket for this film, and four others for only $2 a piece. Otherwise you'll have to wait until at least October to see this film.

It's not supposed to be anything like Freaks & Geeks, but it is written & directed by Paul, adapted from a Danish children's story. Support the man who should have gotten a lot more support from NBC when his stellar show was on the air.
Nobody's
Question (mostly just to bump this thread up) - does anybody think Lindsey really loved Nick? It was always a thing that I wish could be made more clear (though I loved that she apparently didn't - makes it more interesting). It was heartbreaking to see him love her so much and not have her love him back, but I thought in the last episode with all the disco there maybe she did have feelings for him, but he just freaked her out with his intensity.
Lucky Bishop
I saw I Am David at the Boston Film Festival last September. Very good and not like F&G or his book in the least.

No, I don't think Lindsey loved Nick, at least not in any kind of soulmatey way. She liked him, though.
Kaboom
Nah, Lindsey didn't love Nick. At least imho. I think she liked him, but that's it. I'm cracking up as I type this, imagining his dancing (and outfit) in the disco ep. hee!

I also can't imagine hearing that Lady song by Styx without Nick's dramatic gestures as he sang along. Ah, good times!
M. Darcy
According to an article I read in EW, Linda is dating Jason though. One of the many many heartbreaking things about what Fox did to Undeclared is that if there had been a second season, Linda was supposed to be on so we would have had a Nick-Lindsey reunion.
SiameseCatLady
I also can't imagine hearing that Lady song by Styx without Nick's dramatic gestures as he sang along. Ah, good times!

I know - cracks me up anytime I hear it! Nick always did things that reminded me of guys I knew in high school or college. That song he wrote for Lindsey - something about Lady L - was pretty funny too and when he was playing along with the Rush record with all the dry ice. Mem-or-ies, light the cor-ners of my mind...

I don't think Lindsey loved Nick as anything but a friend, but I think in the disco episode she was kinda jealous since he found someone new and she didn't. Let's face it, it's nice to have a guy totally devoted to you, but it sucks when your mother breaks up with him and then he gets a new girlfriend (especially one who gets him to do what she wants him to) while you're alone. It would have been interesting if NBC hadn't cancelled F&G to see if Nick and Lindsey were one of those couples that kept breaking up and getting back together.
iMissEthan
While I really did like Undeclared a lot, Freaks & Geeks is at the top of my shows that should have been given another season. I think it was because Paul Feig's heart and soul is out there in nearly every episode. Judd may have been the producer, but this was Paul's baby. Paul was Sam - read Kick Me, Adventures in Adolescence for confirmation. And check out the first suggestion Amazon says to get if you like this book - it's by TWoP's own Wing Chun!
M. Darcy
Its interesting how both shows are different from each other. While both shows were great and of course, canceled too soon, there are differences. I think you said it best when you said that Paul Feig's heart and soul is out there in nearly every episode of Freaks and Geeks. I think that the shows also show the differences between high school and college - I think both really represented that change.
Gracelessly
Anyone heard anything about Sam's film?

Also, I used to think Ken was way too old to play a teen on the show, and then I found out he's only a few months younger than me. Sadly, he hasn't be doing much lately.
iMissEthan
I'm not sure what you mean about Sam's film, but I saw Paul Feig's film I Am David over the weekend and enjoyed it very much.

It's nothing like Freaks & Geeks. It's a serious film about a young boy who escapes from a Bulgarian work camp and tries to get to Denmark. It was filmed in Bulgaria and features beautiful scenery and some amazing performances. Joan Plowright is in it and so is Jim Cavaziel. The boy who plays David is remarkable. He is so natural, and so un-child actor like. You really believe all this stuff is happening to him. He's either an incredible actor or a very serious boy.

The film is scheduled to open in October - definitely look out for it. Whereas I don't think there is any autobiography for Paul in this one, it's got his heart & soul as well.

I know it sounds like I'm his press agent, but I'm not. I just appreciated Freaks & Geeks so much, and it really broke my heart when they cancelled it. I cannot imagine what it was like for Paul - talk about a personal rejection. I'll support whatever his next projects are, but fortunately they've all been high quality.
M. Darcy
I was a little "luckier" in that by the time I started watched F&G, it was pretty much over with so it wasn't as heartbreaking and personal for me. Didn't towards the end, NBC just showed an evening of a lot of episodes since the show hadn't been on in months? That is when I started watching.

While it still is upsetting, I didn't have the week to week anguish that I got with Undeclared (why are they showing these out of order, ****** Stupid baseball playoffs and ***-**** That 80s Show) and Futurama (why is that football game still on?, *****Fox, its been three months, why haven't we seen any episodes?).
j32master
After watching F&G, Undeclared, a few interviews with him, and plowing through the websites for F&G and Undeclared, I have come to the following admittedly inarticulate but nonetheless true statement:

Judd Apatow is the coolest sonofabitch on the face of the planet.

The world is unfair. Or just plain stupid...

[grampa]A little from column A, and a little from column B...[/grampa]

edited because I'm an idiot...
Doctor Funk
Judd also worked on the late, lamented "Ben Stiller Show." He does some mighty entertaining commentary ont he Ben Stiler dvd set.
Gracelessly
Here's a link to John Francis Daley's new (or old) movie.
iMissEthan
Thank link doesn't work for me, Gracelessly.

Just found this story regarding the Freaks and Geeks DVD, thought other people might be interested.

DVD Preview from IGN
M. Darcy
The six-disc set will contain 18 episodes, three of which never aired, plus more than 40 hours of bonus material. The bonus material includes a director's cut of the pilot episode with behind-the-scenes footage, deleted scenes, outtakes, alternate cuts, blooper reels and 28 audio commentaries by the cast, crew and even parents of cast members and fans. The disc set will also come with a 28-page collectable booklet contains a Q&A with Apatow, an essay by Feig and plenty of geeky photos

YEAH!!! And, I don't think we had heard a date yet - April 6th. Mark you calendars now.
ChinkyGirl
Does anyone know of a price estimate for this set? When I last visited the F&G board, Apatow said that they might end up as high as $120.

ETA: Oops, I just answers my own question, but I'll post it for you guys who are interested. This was taken from a post on the F&G site:

"According to the January 12, 2004 issue of "Video Business" magazine (page 38), the set will retail for $69.98!"

Also, it seems that we will get a 6-disc regular set and 8-disc SE (fan) set. Does anyone know if they will come out simultaneously?
Kris_AB
I know that if you sign up for the F&G mailing list at www.freaksandgeeks.com/dvd you'll be notified of how to get a hold of the special edition (the sign-up on the left of the screen, not the DVD petition at the bottom). It sounds like this special edition might be released as a website-exclusive...which would mean there might be three versions of the F&G DVDs...but I'm guessing that the 6-disc set that costs $69.98 will be the in-stores version and the special edition will be the harder to come by and possibly more expensive second version.

Kinda pricey for an 18 episode series, but seeing as all the original music is intact, not as bad as it could've been.
Ruby Trample of Woody End
The dirt on the special edition DVD.

Yes I just spent $120 + S&H. And yes, that was a stupid question.

Is it April 6th yet?

God I want this DVD so badly I can taste it.
M. Darcy
$120. But the extras....including a letter from Mr. Russo. Oh well, its not like this will be a yearly accurance. Though it would nice if it were. I just ordered it. Yes, NBC you nidwits, you had a show so great that people will spend $120 on the DVD.
iMissEthan
Sorry if I'm being dense here, but are there two versions being released or three? I know there's the 6 disc regular version and the 8 disc yearbook-looking super special edition to order through the website. Is there another lesser special edition version as well or just those two? I can't believe I'm going to spend close to $9 an episode on something I already taped off TV.
Gracelessly
Was I asked to comment on the commentary, no. Was anyone on TWoP asked to?

I love the extras, and damn they get me with high school like yearbook packaging. My much older sibling went to junior high and high school in the early 80s (me late 90s) and I just loved looking at his old yearbooks, especially when I had the same teachers.

Can't wait for Ken's commentary.
Ruby Trample of Woody End
iME I saw that too - one is called Deluxe and one is called special or something. I think it's just logistics and they are both the same 8 disc expensive as hell wall of entertainment goodness. They are both linked to the same extra list - I think that that sep. extra list is just a more detailed description of what's on the extra two discs. Does that make sense?

Yeah, I have it on tape too - thanks to a fellow NYC TWoPer - but you know you want those extras.

Gracelessly I was a high school freshman in 1979/80 so you can imagine how freaking perfect this show is for me. And how full of joy and pain.
SiameseCatLady
Ruby Trample - Thanks for posting the link - there would have been much wailing and gnashing of teeth had I missed out on the extra special deluxe edition. I graduated from high school in 1981 and I have never seen a show that so perfectly captured that time. Damn Damn Damn the braindead execs at NBC! How many of your lame-ass Friends fans would drop $120 for a season's worth of DVD's?!

Yes, I am a bitter, bitter catlady, but at least come April I will be a bitter, bitter catlady who can relive her high school years forever thanks to the magic of DVD.
suctionprints
Thanks for the tip. So much for my discretionary money for the next couple of months, but oh, April will be so worth it.
iMissEthan
I just realized I have a for-sure way of knowing if there are two or three versions available. I will post when I get word. At any rate, I'll be getting the most expensive top of the line deal, cuz I am Paul Feig's bitch.
DMW_SFU
I am going to buy it soon, but first, a question: Will it charge my card now or when it is shipped in April?
Gracelessly
Watching the Pilot episode right now (taped from Family Channel, although I might have the original broadcast somewhere in my collection) and am wondering what the hell that mousy girl with the glasses is doing at the beginning of the episode. The scene is the cafeteria and the popular jocks have just joked on one of their own with Eli and blond mousy glasses girl is just standing in front of them, is she just trying to get noticed? I guess I catch the little things like that.

And I've seen a few episodes of Dawson's Creek in my life (all but one annoyed me) and I caught Busy on it and I just felt sorry for her.

And dodgeball should be illegal. I can't believe I was forced to play that game, I tended to hide during the game and so I was one of the last still in the game, and luckily I was never served up in a plate like Sam (at least I can't remember, all those elementary years are repressed), but it wouldn't end up pretty.

Was Lindsay brushing Nick off when he asked her to come over and listen to the band instead of going to Homecoming (which is exactly like Lindsay described it) and she said she never lies to her father? Or does she truly not lie to her father?
greengirl
DMW_SFU - If they follow MC/Visa regulations, your card should not be charged until the merchandise is shipped.
ElectricBoogalo
The key word there being IF. Heh, try telling that to everyone who ordered My So-Called Life from Another Universe, the supposedly exclusive retailer of the DVD set! Seriously, it seems like the F&G set is completely on the up and up (although the MSCL set seemed on the up and up too until people started being mysteriously double and triple billed a year before the set shipped and are still waiting for their refunds and bonus discs...).

Technically, your card can be charged once they have begun processing your order for shipping (which means at most it should be charged a few days before UPS picks it up from their warehouse for delivery) but I know that some places DO charge as soon as you submit your order instead of when they ship it.
DMW_SFU
OK, I'll place my order then (although I'd feel better if someone who ordered could tell me if they'd been charged yet). Sorry to be such a pain. I don't want to wait, but I also can't afford it until Thursday. Maybe I'll just wait until then. It's not like it will come any sooner if I order it now.
Ruby Trample of Woody End
ElectricBoogalo I've heard about the My So Called Life fiasco, but as this is being distributed by the producers vs. a clearing house like Another Universe I think it's on the up and up.

At least I hope it is.

DMW SFU - I ordered and you aren't charged until they ship in April.
iMissEthan
There are only two versions of the DVD, definitely. Paul continues to work on the yearbook edition, culling photos etc. They are striving for 1980 yearbook authenticity, which I love.
DMW_SFU
Ruby, thanks much. I'm on my way to preorder right now. It says it's available for a limited time. That's why I'm in such a rush. I'm afraid if I wait too long, it will be gone. But "limited" probably is a little longer than I'm thinking, isn't it? At any rate, I will be ordering now. I must have it!
Gracelessly
Yes, I've watched The O.C. - my love for Adam Brody and my fascination with Peter Gallagher's eyebrow knows no bounds - and I finally figured out who Samaire Armstrong (Anna) played on F&G, it was the Grateful Dead chick who is the last person we see on the show. She's the one who wishes she never heard the Dead only to have the experience of hearing it for the first time.
cahernan
Does anybody have any advice to share for a Canadian F&G fan looking to buy the DVD? I'm sorely tempted by the $120 set, but a) that's a lot of money, b) there's an additional $15 shipping fee for international orders, and c) I'm worried about customs and duty. I can just see this climbing over $200 when I could order the slightly-less-special edition of Amazon.ca for $65.
Gracelessly
What does everyone think would happen to the characters had the show continued?

Also has anyone been to see the the show's "bible"?

Actually the link is the closest I could get. If you go to the left and click on Other Junk then go to the making of the show and then to computer and go down to bible, click on that, it's all pretty interesting.
Kristi1972
Is anyone else having trouble ordering from the Freaks & Geeks site? When I click on Checkout, it says my cart is empty.
lanie
The same thing happened to me, but instead of going directly to check out, I pressed "update" before and then it worked fine. Good luck!
Ruby Trample of Woody End
Gracelessly, thanks for the link to the bible - it was great! All F&G fans should read it.

Kristi1972 the same thing happened to me as well. I sort of muddeled through 'till I got my confirmation. I think there must be some bugs in the site.
Gracelessly
I just caught the newest Jason Mraz video for "You And I Both" - which I had already loved before I saw the video - and wouldn't you know it has a Freaks connection. Lizzy Caplain who played Sara, Nick's disco-dancing girlfriend. So check that out if you can.

Anyone heard anything about the small indie film Linda and Jason did recently?
Kaboom
Lizzy Caplain who played Sara, Nick's disco-dancing girlfriend.

I thought she looked familiar! I love that song.

That bible link was awesome, Gracelessy, thank you for posting it. I love that site. :-)
Kaboom
dammit
Gracelessly
Where is everyone? Should we wait to discuss episodes when the DVD comes out?

Also it hurts me to see Linda on ER, all blonde and acting like Killjoy-in-training.
iMissEthan
I bit the bullet and pre-ordered the $120 DVDs as well. I hope they keep their word and it doesn't pop-up on discount sites or in stores at a reduced price. 25,000 isn't a very big run, but I guess it would be foolish to buy a second one to sell at a profit, right?

Fingers crossed for an NYC in-store signing when the DVDs are released.
