Phil was on Oprah today! Seriously. Near the beginning of show (topic was adventure). He helped a woman face her fear of heights and chatted with Oprah for a bit. He promoted N.O.W. (No Opportunity Wasted, his Discovery Channel show). He did not mentioned The Amazing Race at all (that I heard anyway). I know it's late in the day but some people can still catch him!

I also caught Phil on Oprah and thank goodness he wasn't wearing on of those horrendous sweaters. He looked mighty fine. le sigh Also about NOW I think I could do a lot of things if I had Phil kidnap me and make me do it.

I caught Phil on Oprah. He looked and sounded great. I did notice the absence of any mention of TAR. Oprah didn't even mention it as part of his credentials. Odd.

Phil must be keeping very busy these days...with TAR6 filming around the corner and his new show NOW..No Opportunity Wasted. There was an article in Advertising Age on "Kinder, gentler reality TV" which they dubbed wish fulfillment shows. The first 1/3 of the article was about NOW and they had a big picture of Phil smack-dab in the middle of the page.

DAMN! I've been crossing my name off the routing slip for Advertising Age (no time to read it) when I get it after the boss reads it. Which issue date has that article/picture, parks? I'm going to retrieve it and steal it!

I wish it was just the Kiwi accent. Everyone who doesn't live here mispronounces it- the emphasis is on "gene" not "eu". I'm not complaining though, at least I got the opportunity to hear him say it. Now, if he'd just say my name...

Thanks, parks. Not surprisingly, I found the issue in my Amazing Mail Pile. I thought I might have sent it on already to the next person on the routing slip, but in fact it was buried under mountains of crap.
Phil in all his loveliness is now sitting on my desk. I've been bugging my Discovery Channel rep to get me some promotional materials for No Opportunity Wasted. I'm still waiting.....

Well, I'm living for the moment I hear Phil say "AW-reh-gonnne" and I get to holler "It's ORYgun, Phil, ORYgun!" But I'll be hollering with love. Even Walter Cronkite used to say it wrong, so it's not Phil's fault.

It could be worse, Red Targetter, he could say 'OR-ay-gan', which always makes me wonder when they added Oregano as the 51st state.

Here's what I always say to these situations: if we're supposed to prounounce all place names the way the residents do, we'd be calling Paris Paree, and what non-completely pretentious person wants to do that? Still, I've always said EU-gene and I've never even been there.
Boy, pretty off topic. So, I guess I'll just say I'm excited about NOW and hope it's a hit.

Most Australian/New Zealanders pronounce Oregon properly, in my experience. Sometimes its more like Ahr-y-gun. But I consider that to be a difference in accent - not a mispronunciation.
I'd agree with you Eegah if we were discussing foreign localities. But if it's in the U.S., everyone should attempt to pronounce it properly. And if I were speaking in French - I would pronounce Paris with (my attempt at) a French accent. Color me pretentious, I guess.
On to other matters - there's a blurb in the current Budget Traveler on Phil. The caption touts both Amazing Race and No Oppotunity Wasted. And the blurb itself is on a restaurant in Auckland, which says he visits when he's there. It's called Thunderburgers, for anyone who's interested. And slightly spoilerish - it says he took some of The Amazing Race crew there. Now that could mean previously, or this race....
And did I mention the nice photo of Phil . . . ?

I thought the new rule is that if it's in published media, Enrico, it's not a spoiler? But I thought Miss Alli was trying to basically eliminate the need for spoiler bars in any thread since all spoiler material would go in the spoiler thread.
Color me confused and in need of more caffeine this morning, after all this deep thinking.
Oh, and I've always said Eu-GENE, but I lived in Oregon as a kid so probably have an advantage.

Oh my, I didn't mean to start a conversation about how to pronounce Eugene. I didn't really care that Phil said it the way he said it, I was happy that he said it. I know that when I was in Australia I didn't pronounce very much correctly- except for Mooloolaba. I have to thank Phil for that!

Phil shows up on Extra! today and is shown holding a microphone on camera listening to Erika from the Apprentice answering some question or other asked off camera on the red carpet at the Entertainment Weekly function that Frat Kevin told us about. (No sign of either of them, though) and the Extra anchor did give a plug to TAR 5's premiere.

The Amazing Race Insider is up at the CBS TAR page, and along with contestant interviews and the first few minutes of Phil arriving on a boat (Paris had the right hunch after all), there's an interview with Phil in which he talks about a doctor "jabbing me in the butt with a double dose of,uh,uh.. (think fast, Phil)...Vitamin B."
Mama Tiger

Mama Tiger, Phil's been doing that with folks since at least before his first TARcon (TARcon 3); it was a topic of discussion with the attendees then IIRC.
I noticed in the two video clips with Phil on the CBS.com web site that he seems to have stolen Ryan Seacrest's hair. I hope I'm wrong, but it really does look like Ryan's hair!

I'm curious who coined the term "philiminate," however. Was that word used elsewhere or did it originate on TAR? That's what I was talking about, which I clearly expressed badly.

Jun 19, 2004 @ 1:31 am
Mama Tiger, I think there's more than one origin of the term "Philimination."
Phil even has one of his own, that occurred just after 9/11. Check this
interview with Phil from TARflies, third question from the end.
Mama Tiger
Jun 19, 2004 @ 9:05 am
Which makes you wonder, was it used here first before or around 9/11, or somewhere else, since Phil himself was using it so early on. It doesn't strike me that Phil would have coined it and used it himself -- it seems just too egotistical for him.

I'm enjoying the TAR insider very much, esp. the interviews with Phil. Cute, smart and funny. Is he so wonderful because the show is so great? Does the his amazingness rub off on the show? Is is just beautiful synchronicity? I'll just sit here and quitely ponder . . .

I finally had a chance to watch all of the clips. My heart still belongs to Phil - but not to the massive amounts of gel in his hair. Maybe too much gel is the new butt-ugly sweater. But that reminds me - mmmm, butt-jabbing.
Drooling aside, I liked how relaxed Phil looked. He was sitting on a plastic chair, for dogsakes. Hell, he can do that on my patio with a decent glass of microbrew if he likes.

Jun 20, 2004 @ 4:13 pm
I believe some of the TAR1 racers came up with it around the middle of the season. My favorite part of the anecdote, though, was that with all the people asking him to philiminate them, no one has asked him to tell them that they've won! If I ever get to TARcon, I'll be sure to ask him that.

Phil's statement about the origin of "philimination" is very early on timewise. TAR 1 premiered September 5, 2001 (just six days before 9/11) and the second episode didn't air until the 19th. While Miss Alli used the term at some early point in her season one recaps as well, IIRC, she's not accepted responsibility for coining the word, though I suspect she may be the first person to use it in a published writing.

My recollection is that the TAR1 racers told us that their nickname for Phil was "the Philiminator." That's my memory. I like to think we made it more popular, heh, but no, it was not us originally.

My boyfriend and I were talking about TAR today and he had the nerve to call Phil "that wierd host," presumably because he doesn't do as much as other reality TV hosts. I was so offended. No one talks about Phil that way.
I can't wait to hear Phil talk about the fast forward being "most advantageous" again. Whee!

I'm looking forward to Phil's first explanation of the Yield rule, because it'll sound so memorable and...oh, I just want to hear him say it. Also I'm curious what turn of phrase they'll come up with that we'll hear every time the Yield is used.

Playing with my new computer, I made a video file of Phil's appearance on Oprah. I missed the first bit because I was running into the room to find a tape. I remember talking to Phil about this the morning after TARcon 2. (Heh. That makes it sound like we spent the night together.) He said he used to live in Guelph, of all the random places. Then he put on his best Canadian accent and said: "Let's go get some beers, eh!"
