Batman doesn't let people win. Shayera beat him because she's slightly better at chess than he is. As far as her strategic thinking goes, she spied on the Justice League for three years, analyzing their strengths and weaknesses, discovering their closest-held secrets and all without raising any suspicions among her colleagues.

She also comes from a militaristic culture, so I'd imagine she's had tactics and strategy drilled into her head from kindergarten.
News on two JL related projects today. Joss Whedon is reviving the long moribund Wonder Woman film, and a Flash movie is in the works focusing on Wally West.

What's an annual and how do they work? And when Nightwing has his own comic, but shows up in a Justice League or during Identity Crisis or whatnot, does the events that happen there carry over to his own book, or do the writers just use whoever and whenever they like? Or is there communication between the books?
And I think I finally got it figured out:
Justice League has the core members, minus Plastic Man.
Robin is not in Justice League, and he's in Teen Titans.
Batgirl is not Barbara Gordon, but she's part of the Birds of Prey.
Or has Birds of Prey not been established in this timeline? If so ... where the hell is she?!!!!

Well according to the crappy tv series which I'll admit I watched (and I think the BOP comics) , Batgirl (Barbra) was shot by the Joker at point blank range and became paralyzed. So she developed all these web/tech skills and became Oracle.
But I am sure there's someone much more versed who could fill in the gaps better than I.

Jan 5, 2005 @ 6:46 pm
Oh, I know how she became Oracle and who shot her and who's the new Batgirl.
But that's all in the comics.
I'm trying to figure out in the cartoon series we're watching, where she is now. She's not yet part of the Birds of Prey, right? So she's still Batgirl, so where the hell is she?

In the Dini/Timm Animated continuity Babs still has use of her legs, there are (as of yet) no Birds of Prey, and she is still 'Batgirl' though she may be a bit inactive (due to being in college). She's also good friends with Supergirl.
In the Batman Beyond future she can still walk and had a romantic relationship with Bruce at some point in the past (while she was still Batgirl), it didn't end well. Bruce Wayne -- Billionaire, Vigilante, Asshole ....

I'm watching the Solomon Grundy episode with Hawkgirl again, and I am once more amazed at how pretty she's drawn. I mean, when she went around with her head hidden in her costume I figured she'd be attractive under it all, but somehow she's far more, like, glamorous looking then I thought she'd be. That make sense?

Yes. Her face reminds me of a 50's starlet.
This was a rerun? How did I miss this the first time? I was really surprised that Vixen didn't comment on Hawkgirl/GL in public or in private. She did make that baby doll crack, and at one point, she looked really pissed.

Just in case any of you were wondering, apparently we are going to have a run of new JLU episodes for a while. After the League decides to cowboy up and go beyond in the two part season finale, the next season starts immediately. Episode descriptions are below.
Saturday, Feb. 5: "The Cat and The Canary" Black Canary convinces Green Arrow to help save her mentor, the Wildcat, from his involvement in an underground, super-powered fight club.
Saturday, Feb. 12: "The Ties that Bind" The world's greatest escape artist needs help from the Flash in order to break a deadly enemy out of an inescapable prison on an alien planet.
Saturday, Feb. 19: "The Doomsday Sanction" While Superman battles Doomsday in the heart of a Volcano, Batman discovers an elaborate conspiracy to destroy the Justice League.
Apparently volcanoes are the location of choice for epic one on one fights.

So when is the JLU season finale, b/c last i heard they were still working on it, tweaking some things and they were just going to skip it and go into season 2, and show it at a later point, proabably one of those cartoon theater thingies and show both parts. The best part is that Shayera is a major part of season 2, I'm guessing she's dropped the Hawkgirl moniker now.

Still too much waiting (Feb 5) for the last chapters of the 1st JLU season.
Would you stand another season JLU knowing how poor they treat the core members? Perhaps another JLU season followed by a brand new -no guitar intro- season with 7-12 members league (a la Morrison)? IMO the fanservice went out of hand.
Saturday, Feb. 12: "The Ties that Bind" The world's greatest escape artist needs help from the Flash in order to break a deadly enemy out of an inescapable prison on an alien planet.
Yesss!, but I can't stop thinking they might reduce the involment of the Flash to a 3-second cameo with him pressing a button to open a door and thus justifying the "help from the Flash"....those WB bastards! they have hurt my Flash fanboy soul just too many times
This "JLU - Let the Flash speak" shrine I'm currently worshiping it's ought to pay off.

Just got through watching "Weird Western Tales" and I really enjoyed it. The appearance of Jonah Hex was well received. My question is that I am not well familiar with his history and he appeared to know about time travel telling Bats, he's had an "interesting life". What kind of encounters did Mr. Hex have beforehand?
Toward the end, what did Warhawk(?) say to Green Lantern? I didn't have closed captioning this time but did he say "Dad"?
Lines I liked:
WW: These shoes are killing me.
Batman: You fight crime in high heels.
WW: High heels that fit.
Lines that should have been said:
Enid: You invent a time machine and can't think of anything good to do with it?
David: I can use it to go back in time and stop myself from marrying you!

Very nice non-use of Chronos. Nice alluding to the mid-80s "Hex" series...may it never happen in the DCU. And while I'm bugged by the appearance of StaticMan (never watched the crossover eps)...Warhawk is John's kid? Cool. See, John Stewart is still all about the alien booty. What's Vixen got that Hawkgirl and Katma don't have? She's only got, what, two kidneys, one stomach, two lungs. That don't do much for GL in the long run, baby.
I reckon this might be the best ep of the JLU era. And with Terry and GrumpyOldBruce next week, things might get better.

What kind of encounters did Mr. Hex have beforehand?
I'm not sure about his comic book history, but he did show up in an old BTAS episode where he fought Ra's al Ghul's son (in the 1800's, of course). He looked quite a bit younger here, so I'm not sure what else he's done, or if that event has even happened.
Toward the end, what did Warhawk(?) say to Green Lantern? I didn't have closed captioning this time but did he say "Dad"?
Yup, that's what he said. This has been speculated on ever since HG and GL started a relationship, and it looks like it's been confirmed. Of course, when Warhawk first appeared Justice League hadn't been created, but the armor design lends itself to that.
Since Enid was voiced by Mindy Sterling (I think), she should have said:
You're like the Diet Coke of evil.
This was a fun jaunt, as I suspect most of the heavy lifting will be done in part 2. There's no way those ROTJ Jokerz should pose a formidable threat, so I'm looking forward to what's coming.
Oh, and Static sure looks a lot older than the future Static that showed up in the Static Shock episode.

I didn't realize it until this moment, but I have waited my entire life to see a cowboy riding a robot dinosaur.
Warden- Jonah Hex was a hard-boiled old west hero who was the lead of one of DC comic's longest-lasting Western comics, which was published well into the 1980's. Unfortunately, some time after it was cancelled, DC decided it would be a good idea to transport him into a post-apocalyptic future that was more than a little plagiarized from Mad Max where he rode a motorcycle and fought nuclear mutants. The comic was called
Hex, and was a supremely ill-conceived concept. I'm guessing the references in tonight's show were playfully referencing this best-left-forgotten episode. Since then, all of his comic book appearances have been in the old west, where they should be.
There's a site about Jonah Hex here:
http://www.toonopedia.com/jonahhex.htm although it doesn't cover
Hex in much detail
Also, I'm a bit disappointed that future Static Shock still has the same hairstyle he had when he was a teenager, although I'm a big fan of the beard.

I've been utterly disappointed with this season of JLU, after a great Season 2. The fact that the Flash hasn't had a speaking part or been featured in any episode this season is unacceptable. (I could accept it if Michael Rosenbaum wasn't available, but he's always managed to do Smallville and other roles while doing voice work on JL in the past.) The fact that no explanation has been given pisses me off. It's like the Flash was never part of the Justice League! I've said it before, but it bears repeating. This season is inferior to Seasons 1 & 2. This series needs a one hour episode to tell a proper story. Everything is simply too rushed with a half hour story and frankly, all these second tier DC characters they've brought in are not impressive. They amount to little more than a cameo. There has been minimal character development this season (as opposed to Season 2) with the core members of the League. And judging from the spoilers regarding next month's Season 4 start, for the most part it just seems like more of the same. I just get the feeling that TPTB on this series didn't give a damn about telling a good story or developing any of the main characters. All they seem to be interested in is stuffing the screen with as many characters from the DC Universe as possible and feeling the audience should be content with that. Well, I'm not!

That episode rocked. Why couldn't they have been making half hours like this all season? I loved the westernised Justice League theme, and Adam Baldwin with the Jayne voice, and robot dinosaurs, and Ben Browder. It was a fun ep.

I couldn't believe all the action crammed into this half hour episode, it just doesn't seem right for this show, with what all we've seen this past season. I really was psyched to see the second half w/the action that built up, why didn't they do a cartoon theater and show the whole hour of teen titans and justice league tonight, it would have been a ratings smash for cn. I loved that Shayera was shown, i would figure after last episode they would just drop her and she wouldn't be seen for a few episodes, loved the hostility as well, it shows they actually follow up on plot developments from the previous season. All in all the best episode of the season, can't wait for the continuation.

Soo, this was basically an excuse to use all of DC's Old West characters? Plus throw in a little Westworld. Not that it was a bad episode, I much prefer using just three original core members. The bit at the beginning discussing their relationships was priceless. I too noticed those jeans fit Diana amazing well, for being taken off a sweaty male outlaw. Not familiar with Warhammer so that was just a 'huh?' moment for me.
I'm betting Terry will say something like "So this is what you were like before you became a crotchety old geezer."

It is right after they jump through time, when they first arrive in the 'old west' and the three bad guys come up to them. I figured they were going to say they were in Arizona, but with those mesas behind them it did remind me a lot of a John Ford movie, which were filmed in MV, Utah. Anyhoo -- One of them says they need to pay a toll saying something about 'owning the area'. That part I don't exactly recall, because the next thing he says is "Elkhorn, Oklahoma". (I realize that 'Elkhorn' and 'Oklahoma' could sound almost the same, but the guy clearly says two place names) "Oklahoma"!? I yell, scaring the dog, "they can't even get place locations right in cartoons?" -- vividly recalling the lovely mountains of Minnesota as shown in
Little House on the Prairie.
