Did anyone else think of Handy from The Tick when Medusa mentioned The Acropolis (I think) and then after a long pause said, "The Acropolis...?"
roosterboy
I was fine with just about everything in this episode except Medusa. I thought her character was just too silly.

And, ErgoNothing, no way is Hawkeye cooler than GA. Hawkeye doesn't have a cool bone in his body!
kimmako
Just delurking to say that Black Canary and Green Arrow were a couple for many years in the DC universe and I did enjoy this episode. Bullets and bracelets, porcine-style!

I guess we'll have to agree to disagree, but there's only one superheroic archer with a Van Dyke, and his name isn't Hawkeye.

I'm much more of a Marvel person in general

That's funny, because as the last episode was another in a series of disappointments over this season I recalled how much more I liked the Avengers over Justice League. Maybe because the JL characters were so established they to me seemed leaden, where the Avengers offered more to discover. Wow, if the series needed to expand its universe, the Marvel line of characters would have been so much more interesting.

Now, all that means that I understand the attraction between WW and Batman. However, their romance is doomed. While WW is attracted to certain parts of Batmans personality I'm sure that his obsessiveness and general weirdness will drive her away sooner or later. So, I think that the things that make Batman a "Bad Boy" will be the things that eventually end any possible relationship between WW and Batman, instead of being the cause of it.

I think this depends on how the creative team wants to take it. The JL Bats is still a dark and brooding person, but he seems to be much lighter than he was during TNBA. That Batman pummeled a guy in front of his young son, never really cracked much of a smile, and tossed Superman into a table. Of course MOTB Batman was ridiculously light hearted, but that's another debatable point. The obsession is still there, but I would argue that most superheroes have it: otherwise, why would they knowingly sabotage their own personal lives constantly just to save some stranger? So the bottom line is: who knows? Batman is whomever the writers want him to be. Besides, Batman Beyond isn't necessarily the guaranteed future: maybe the writers will go nuts and create a Crisis on Infinite Earths scenario where that's one particular dimension.

It might have just been because I've watched a lot of Turner Classic Movies lately, but Medusa looked a lot like a green snake-haired version of Katherine Hepburn to me.

I liked Circe, I was a big mythology geek in high school and was very happy about the goddess-tude she had throughout the episode. Gods and Goddesses would spend their time on Earth pranking and fooling around with the mortals just for entertainment value all the time in the old myths. She knew that turning Diana into a pig wouldn't be a solve-all solution, but she got some good fun out of doing it and striking a deal to undo it. Also love that she was jealous of the sirens and mocked them for never branching out. Usually I absolutely hate episodes that focus on characters being turned into animals, but the little scene where Bats is affectionately petting the pig was so sweet and under-played I had to love it.

That clip of Kevin Conroy's singing rocks. When I watched the episode, I was rolling around laughing so hard at the situation and visuals that I didn't even get to pay attention to his voice- which is indeed good.

And yes, last season was much better- but I think it's interesting that they're at least trying other ways of going about the show. I think the half-hour episode deal is stupid, but they seem to be using the shorter episodes to do more character-driven episodes than action driven, which is an interesting way of going about it.
john mora
This episode struck me as a really funny episode of Angel, with Batman in the lead role. The singing just confirmed my feelings. If all JLU episodes were like this, I'd definitely watch it.
alliterator
I guess that's also why I liked it, since I liked Angel so much. Except Angel would have sung really badly. And probably a Barry Manilow song.
Ian
Funny, I was thinking the other day that the club should have been full of greek demons and stuff, and been fronted by a Lorne lookalike. That would have been the coolest shout-out, ever.
Curare
I just watched "Starcrossed"...WOW!!!

I miss the old theme song so much. As well as the spoiler free opening sequence.

I hate that they are not showing the Flash in S3 so far. The show is so lacking without him. I liked that Batman was saved by Supes and not WW.

GL/Hawkgirl: Good stuff. They did that so well.

Hope tomorrow's ep is good. Not holding my breath though.
cambridgeguy
Well that was definitely continuing the serious/comedic trend.

Looks like Fox Mulder found a new home after the X-Files ended. Who needs Batman to be Mr. Paranoia when you have the Question involved? Liked his repsonse about going through everyone's trash. I wonder if he knows all the secret identities of the League members.

I also think continuity just wet herself.
mrow
Tea was pretty attractive. Supergirl looks good with a few years and shorter hair.

Was the professor always working for the secret guys, or did Supermans batrayel shake him really hard, hard enough to drive him to extremes?

I love that instead of an "I want to Believe" poster, The Question had one that just said "I know"- complete with alien head in the "o" of "know". He was so freakin' cool.
Earl Allison
Some good, some bad.

Loved Jeffrey Coombs as the Question -- hope I spelled his name right.

I'm less thrilled with Tea/Galatea, since her costume seems to indicate she is the JLU version of Power Girl, another superstrong female with Superman's powers. At one time she was Kryptonian, then Atlantian, then I have no idea what. I really hope this isn't the answer to PG's complicated origin -- rivalling Hawkman's and Donna Troy's for most changed and convoluted. The character and the idea were okay, just not that they in essence made her Power Girl, and a villain to boot.

Hamilton did get rather upset (uncharacteristically so, IMHO) over Superman's actions while under Darkseid's sway, and I guess he also went evil in the comics a while back. So I can see why he would do this, although I don't agree with it.

I still hate the theme, but that's not going to change :)

Now I want my real Power Girl! She's not a clone of Supergirl, darn it!
Lantern7
Eh. The problem with the new members is that most of them don't bring much to the table. "Hi! I'm a paranoid mofo who was the basis for Rorscach! But since this is my first appearance on a cartoon, I'm basically Fox Mulder...without a face."

Galatea...nice twist on Power Girl as a clone of Supergirl, given her pre-Crisis history. But I'd expect Dr. Hamilton not to be in the loop.

Nice continuity with references to Volcana, "Wild Cards" and the final "Superman" story. But I'm just not blown away. And Booster freakin' Gold does not rev my engine, either.
Warden

I like the one with bigfoot on the wall as well as his explanation of actors running for public office and boy bands. Jeffrey Combs voicing the character really added to his heightened paranoia. I certainly hope The Question just doesn't take the professor's "word" on his involvement and continues his investigation further in the series.

Tea was pretty attractive. Supergirl looks good with a few years and shorter hair.

How does one get her hair short? Kryptonite scissors?

Agreed the voice The Question fit it perfectly. Now I'll be picturing Combs' face whenever the Question appears in the comics (sans mask of course). My favorite part is when he was singing to himself as he's breaking in to the building. That was a real WTF? moment. And Vic Sage (AKA The Question) predates Fox Mulder by a long long time, good to see the Timm Gang make an X-Files like connection with the two characters.

I don't think they made Powergirl (and that is obviously who she was supposed to be) a villian - just someone who's being used. By the end of this season or next she'll probably turn on her keepers and become a member of the JL. The origin isn't so bad considering that her present comic book origin is anybody's guess (she was originally Kara Zor-L, Supergirl's doppleganger on Earth-2 before Crisis wiped away Supergirl's existence hence a new origin for her). Geoff Johns who writes PG in the JSA has been promising and promosing a final origin for Powergirl for a long time - all the hints thrown out seem like they're going to make her a Kryptonian again so maybe the JLU episode is a hint as well. We know DC likes to correlate with their animated cartoons - hence John Stewart is suddenly GL in the JLA comic and Kara is back as Supergirl in the Superman comics.

The one thing I don't like is the name "Galatea" which smacks of Greek myth and is more WW territory than Superman (or related) mythos. I would have preferred if they had named her Kara as well (which is still Powergirl's name in the comics although she goes by Karen) to accentuate the ties to Supergirl.

All in all though I think this was the best episode of the season yet.
Daisy Duke

Her own laser eyes reflecting off mirrors would be old school, but yeah, Krypto-scissors is actually less lame. Sad, isn't it?

"Galatea" as a name only works if the scientist is a pervy science project fancier.

The Question was amusing. I don't know anything about his backstory, but he was fun.

What's the Green Arrow doing spending that much time with a highschooler? Supes is gonna kill him!
Readster
The Question rules! And Jeffry Combs did the voice perfectly, though I was laughing when he was singing. Love Green Arrow as always and he was even using his real name. Ah, continuity.
Curare
Overall it was a good ep. I just feel that the cast is too bloated. I'm not loving the showing as I used to and that makes me sad.

I liked the Question and hope we see him again. I also liked that Hardcastle was in the ep. I wish other shows showed this kind of continuity. I don't know how I feel about Hamilton. I now want him and supes to have talk about what happened when he went rogue. Loved hearing about the Zeta project too. So why don't THEY just kill Supes and Supergirl and keep their clones?

Also what is MM's job now? It looks like he's the dispatcher/shrink of the group?
Sideshow Cecil

That killed me. Especially the bit when he's checking out the card slot like he's going to, I don't know, go all Batman on it, and then just throws the plant through the glass instead. Good stuff.

I liked the ep, but I'm easy--I couldn't very well not like it since it's three of my favorite characters and then The Question, whom I'd never heard of until tonight, but I ended up loving him too. I was really feeling the time constraints in this ep, though. So, so much more could have been done with an hour.
Gnosis
I dug this episode a lot. Nice uses of continuity from both JL and Superman TAS. Power Girl is one of my favorite JSAers in the comics so it was nice to see her in some form here. And as a Niner hearing Jeffrey Combs as the Question was just awesome.

I do have a (sorry for the upcoming pun) question about the Question. To me, he came off more of a Rorscach lite than what I've seen of the Question in the comics. The only thing I've read that has featured him was Rucka's Huntress series from a couple of years ago and the character seemed much less paranoid. So was this version acurate or was it simply referncing Moore's character rather than the actual Question?

They probably stressed that part (the Moore/Rorscach tie-in and the Mulder-like personality) because it may have been more accessible to people seeing him the first time. Originally in the 1960s The Question served as his creator's (Steve Ditko) mouthpiece espousing the philosophy of Ayn Rand and the character has changed (more than) a little since then. No doubt the upcoming Question comic mini-series (which will supposedly be set in Superman's Metropolis) will change him a little yet again. You can play around with the more obscure characters like him (and Hawk and Dove and Powergirl) more than the more known ones, which is why the JLU guys have probably used them as opposed to say Hawkman, Captain Marvel, Nightwing or even the Flash.
lurk3000
This episode should've been an hour long. I liked what GA said when he and Supergirl were watching the video of "Powergirl"
Supergirl: That's me!
GA: Yeah except more......mature
Not only did they have some Mulder/X-Files references but the rumpled reporter with the hat seems to be an homage to Carl Kolchak , which was the inspiration for the X-files.
Zerowing

I'm fairly positive that Steve Ditko's Question first appeared before Kolchak.

I just watched a tape of the episode this morning.

Okay, The Question...totally rocks! They totally nailed Vic Sage´s eccentricities. And Jeffrey Combs gave one of the best voice performances I have heard on the series up to now. "Humph! Please. I go through everyone's garbage."

Interesting way they bought Power Girl into the cartoon continuity. They made her a clone of Kara. I guess that was done to simplify her origin. Power Girl has had a few different convoluted origins. Making her be a clone is as good as anything else I guess.

No bones about it, they´ve made her a killer. I don´t know how the writers intend to resolve that.

The interaction between Green Arrow and the Question was hilarious. I´d love to be in the room when the Question and Batman have a conversation.

The Question humming the surgery pop-tune was extremely funny. And he totally nailed the real reason why Power Girl wanted to off Supergirl.

We also got a call-back from Superman continuity from the episode where Darkseid turned him against Earth.

And *gasp!* good old Dr. Hamilton is in on the conspiracy??! That´s not good. I guess Superman going berserk had a more lasting effect on him than we thought. I guess the Question would say "Just because I'm paranoid doesn't mean there isn't a conspiracy."

All around, I think this was the best episode of the new season yet. Due in no small part to Jeffrey Combs.
lurk3000

Oh no. I didn't mean The Question. I was talking about the reporter who congratulated the Eagle News reporter in that bar. Sorry 'bout that.

Yup. Jeffrey Combs as The Question rocked.
MrX
I agree. He made the episode. I'm kind of glad that this is my first ep of Unlimited.

Ooops. Sorry for misunderstanding. Now that I remember, yeah. That guy did kinda look like Kolchak.

Jeffrey Combs was amazing. And I loved hearing him sing.

One of the most giggle-worthy moments for me came in the taxi when the Question asked that guy, "So, what do you think of that prepackaged corporate pop?" Then, when he turned on the radio, the captions said "[PREPACKAGED CORPORATE POP PLAYS]". Hee!
Skip Intro
Jeffrey Combs was amazing.

Agreed 100%. Early on, when he mentioned Supergirl’s midnight snacking habits (“Please. I go through everyone’s trash”), I flashed on him playing The Question’s doppelgänger Rorschach, should Watchmen ever really finally for sure this time become a movie. He was effectively threatening in a sinister and creepy way, much like I would expect of Rorschach, and not at all how I remembered him behaving or “heard” him sounding like in his O’Neil/Cowan series. Excellent and inspired job.
painter
As I am without cable, I haven't seen any of this, but it sounds like an interesting take on the Question, maybe in line with his upcoming revival by the team of Rick Veitch/Tommy Lee Edwards (the advance pages I've seen look great, btw.)
ErgoNothing
I really liked this episode (a big step up from last week) and I loved the use of the Question. Was it just me, though, or did they not even mention his name during the episode? If I didn't already know he was I would have been a little confused to see a faceless detective wandering around the JLA satellite.

The only thing that kind of rubbed me the wrong way about the plot was using Green Arrow as the foil for the Question's weird conspiracy theories. Ollie seems like he would be the type of guy to say "Yeah, I'm with you, buddy. The Man is plotting to keep us down, and I'm getting sick and tired of it! Those corporate fat-cats and shady power brokers are going to be the first ones up against the wall when the revolution comes!", not "Does everything have a sinister motive with you?" I liked having him around, though, so I won't object too loudly.

I also liked Tea's, er, maturity. Even if they're not calling her Power Girl, I'm glad they've kept her trademark cleavage window.
Sideshow Cecil
Was it just me, though, or did they not even mention his name during the episode?

It wasn't just you--I didn't know who the character was until I stopped by here after the show. I wasn't too thrown off because there are an awful lot of DC characters I've never heard of, but it was weird that they never said it.

I thought it was kind of cool having Ollie as the foil, like it was just playing up The Question's paranoia even more. It might not have worked as well with a Captain Atom-esque character, the way it did in the first episode with Atom/Arrow--they'd be too completely polarized to fully express that hey, The Question's not just liberal like Ollie is, he's OUT THERE.
roosterboy
Was the Z8 robot that attacked Kara a nod to The Zeta Project? Except for the head (I think; it's been a long time since I saw that show), the Z8 looked similar to Zeta. And, y'know, Z8... Zeta... Z8a. Are we to assume that this is the same continuity? I know that Batman Beyond was and that we'll be visiting that future in a later episode, so I assume it is.

Was it just me, though, or did they not even mention his name during the episode?

There was at least one mention of his name. When J'onn calls to alert them to the scientist missing story on the news, there's this exchange:
"Question."
"Go ahead."
"Look at your monitor."

Oh yeah, gotta say I loved this ep. Green Arrow, Supergirl, and The Question are three of my favorite characters so it was nice to see them team up. They should become a regular team.
ErgoNothing
I figured the robots they fought in this episode were earlier models of what eventually led to Zeta, since the continuities of the Dini series all tie together.

Now that you point out that line of dialogue, I remember it, but it didn't jump out at me at the time. Still a little late in the episode to be introducing him.

By the way, it just occurred to me that the Martian invasion from the original series premiere must have been the happiest day of the Question's life. Ah, validation.
Lantern7
Zeta sucks. That is all. If only they could bring the TZP cast back from the past to beat the shit outta them. Seriously, it was the only Dini/Timm-connected series I gave up on.

I just don't buy Question as JLU material. He's some dude without a face. Guys like Green Arrow and Batman have some kind of quality to hang with the big dogs (money? Might be). But Question? Keep him off the satilette...he doesn't even wear tights. Ditto for the Crimson Avenger.
Zerowing

The Question brings another high level of intellect to the team. (Batman can't be everywhere) And as we've seen in previous episodes, some of these heroes don't approach problems as intelligently as they should. They need people like the Question around. His detective skills are on par with Batman's, although as I pointed out earlier in the thread, his methodology is a bit different than Batman's.

Plus he's good in a fight too. The comic Question is good a fighter as Batman.

And as for his costume. Part of the nature of the Question's personality is he's a non-conformist, thus he would never dress like other superheroes because that would go against his personal ideology.
painter
Actually the great thing about the Question's costume and disguise is that it's hardly apparent he's anything more than just another guy - until you try to look him in the eye! Then you freak the F! out.

Invisibility, but not like Jonn Jonz' - hiding in plain sight.

Keep in mind that Superman said that the time for solo operation was over. Part of the point of recruiting everybody not named Nightwing, Batgirl, and Robin was to coordinate everyone's activities, regardless of where they rank on the superhero scale. Only folks like Batman (is he still a part timer?) are supposed to go solo most of the time.
VWBug82
My added 2 cents on the new ep:

Pretty good one but I would have much prefered if Hardcastle actually did put the bullet through Ollie. He still strikes me as a pervert & a jerk.

They let Evil PowerGirl Gala(Tea) date?

Was it just me or did that sound like Cree Summer doing the "Oops I Did It Again" parody?
Zerowing
You could look at him that way I guess. But I see him more as a 'Han Solo' roguish type, who's always macking on the ladies.

Now, if he had made a pass at Supergirl, then I would definitely say 'pervert'. But he treated Supergirl with a lot of respect and sensitivity. Oliver is actually a decent guy underneath the cocky veneer.
VWBug82
To me in this ep it looked like he was one step away from making a pass at Kara. Not to mention his comment on Tea's "look".

I'm not seeing any Han Solo-ness.

Don't forget about all Robin's buddies over on Teen Titans. If it wasn't for Supergirl (she'd be about seventeen now, right? Younger than Nightwing and Batgirl.), I'd say there was an age limit or something.

... Now I want to see Nightwing show up and piss Batman off.
Zerowing

Ollie was just saying out loud what a lot of guys were probably thinking. He tends to do that a lot. lol

And saw no indication at all that Ollie was a "step away" from making a pass at Kara. The only woman in the League he has eyes for is Black Canary. (Whom he made another passing glance at this episode)
VWBug82
While he had some moments he seemed fairly nice to Kara, most of it I didn't think he was being sensitive or treating her with respect. Especially that line about not having snacks before going to bed. She had an extremely disturbing dream not a "My favorite band broke up" dream.

Don't get me started about the way Ollie was checking out Black Canary. Then practically announcing he had a dirty dream about her when she was close by. Creep.

ETA: Kara just found out her dna has been used to create a Super-Puppet & he makes a crack? Yeah, real smooth. :rolls his eyes:
Sideshow Cecil

Yep, it was her. I caught that in the credits.

Hahah, I guess they did reveal Question's name, then. I did hear that line, but it didn't even occur to me that "Question" was actually his name the way J'onn said it. I kept thinking "I thought you were going to ask a question, J'onn, did you forget?" I think if you hadn't known it was his name ahead of time, like me, it wouldn't click.

I can't really defend Ollie because those tactless, vaguely pervy details about his personality are exactly what I like about him. *shrugs* The guy's not Superman (heh)--either you dig that or you don't.

And hey, eating weird things before bed really can result in some damn disturbing dreams . . .
Perfect Xero
  • No ridiculous plot resolutions centered around singing?
  • No characters being transformed into kids or animals for wacky hi-jinx and easy laughs?
  • A deeper plot drawing from established continuity?
It was almost like having my old Justice League back.

Of course the episode really proves how pointless the 'league expansion' was. The Question's part (as much as I enjoyed the voice work) could've been filled by Batman and Arrow could've easily been replaced by Flash. And yes, I was hoping that "Power Girl" would knock the Robin Hood wannabe's smug head off.
Zerowing

The point is that each hero can't do every job. That was the point of the expansion.

I think some people have the misconception that the comic book Earth is this nice, peaceful place where super-villains, monsters, and various natural disasters only act up once and awhile.

But there is shit going on all the time all over the world. The Joker and Riddler aren't going to be sitting on their asses in Gotham "waiting" for Batman to finish his League business. No, they are going to be doing shit while Batman's away. And most other villains aren't waiting either.

And no, I don't need an explanation every episode for why a certain hero is not around. It's just a given that if a certain hero aint there, then they off somewhere taking care of some other problem. No explanation is needed.
Denman
My favorite part of the ep(besides the Question singing that little pop song to himself) was when Ollie told Supergirl in the cafeteria about having "dreams that felt real" and looking over at Dinah(Black Canary) at her laptop! It sucks that fishnet stockings are difficult to animate. Both Canary and Zatanna aren't quite the same without 'em!
