Because the Cartoon Network is full of crack monkeys?

No. Even actual crack monkeys would know better.

I laughed my ass off at Superman "not holding back anymore!" or whatever the excuse was for Supes suddenly being able to thump a guy he's had a hard time with in the past. That and, "He has mental blocks that prevent him from using his full power! MENTAL BLOCKS!" are the rallying cries of Superman fanboys everywhere.

I wasn't really a big fan of the JLU seasons, it was much better when it was just Justice League (IMO), but I'll still miss the show. It was still a fairly enjoyable half hour or so.

My only problem--fantastic finale, BTW--is that whenever the world is really threatened, Dr. Fate and his superpowered friends are never around. Couldn't he have, ya know, helped out?

Dr. Fate was in the group shot at the very end of Alive, so presumably he was off zapping parademons.

Speaking of that group shot, if you look at the end credit clip of that Orion is standing between Batman and GL, but he's edited out in the episode. I guess they decided having him there would make the final fight too complicated, since you know he'd have joined Superman up by the Daily Planet (I guess Clark will have few days off now).
Bungalow Joy
Isn't the android that Fate took under his wing pretty much all-powerful, though? Of course it was the Superman vs Darkseid show, but I always wondered how he might do against Darkseid, or a god or something.
BoozeGood
Final episode was so good. The shot at the end really got to me, the show was so good at everything it did. Characterization, action, continuity. I'm going to miss it so much, oh well.
Damaris56
Okay, I'll admit it - I cried at the end. I've been watching these shows since Batman: The Animated Series, Batman Beyond, Superman: The Animated Series, etc. Knowing that this is it and we won't be seeing these characters together again is upsetting. Loved that they brought back Jonn and he's happy (although I would have loved to know the story on him and his lady friend and what about GL and Hawkgirl?) I wish they could have provided more closure for certain characters. Still, loved the story and loved that they showed so many DC characters. Oh, and because it can't be said enough: Fuck you Cartoon Network for the way you handled this series and for cancelling it! Bring on the DVDs.

I liked the little details in this episode, such as Lex stealing Lightray's Boom Tube instead of just asking him for a lift. I agree that Zatana and the Question were used well in their brief appearances. Meanwhile, it appears that Flash has overtaken Batman and Green Lantern as the Justice League's ladies man.

I usually like ambiguous endings, but I felt that this one was a bit too vague. I wish we got at least a little more information about what happened to Lex when he found the anti-life equation, as well as what happened to Darkseid and him at the end. I had a much clearer idea of what was happening when Uatu took the Human Torch to get the Ultimate Nullifier to prevent Galactus from destroying the Earth, to pick a comic book example.

Exactly. Its hard to take Darkseid seriously when AMAZO pretty much destroyed the JLA without blinking AND can steal powers. What makes Darkseid so much stronger? He was struggling against Superman by himself.

Where do we go from here?

Has it been fourteen years? Jeezus, I'm old. It was a fantastic ride and I'm grateful to everyone who came together to make it happen. And I look forward to any straight-to-DVD features that are in the mix. I mean, that's the logical next step, right?

As for the finale itself, it was fun. The fighting was great, but it just didn't quite have the same "oomph" that the one against Lexiac had. The stakes just seemed so much higher in that episode, than in this one. Still, it was a fine send-off with plenty of nods to fans of the comics and to TAS.

I know all good things must come to an end eventually, but couldn't we have waited until this show jumped the shark first?

It jumped when it went from JL to JLU. The quality totally nosedived. Nothing from the JLU eps can compare with Starcrossed and the Justice Lords saga, which devolved to a convoluted government conspiracy against metahumans ripped off from Marvel.

Timm/Dini did a good job and put lots of hard work into their assorted series, but I don't consider them to be the ultimate interpretation of the DC Universe. At this point, I'd rather have a completely fresh take.

Oops. You double posted VK.

I wouldn't mind a new perspective on DC either, as long as it's a quality one. But it seems like the best we could hope for is something else that's kid-friendly and/or animefied, and that just doesn't fit the bill. Though I enjoyed Teen Titans for what it was.
Aspen
Double Date and Question Authority - Yup, it's all about The Question. I'm always be grateful to Timm, McDuffie...etc..for introducing me to The Question.

My fave eps as well, along with Fearful Symmetry. I used to think of Q as little more than a neat Ditko character, but IMO casting him in JLU was one of the best things to happen to him and the show.
Stuckinowhere
I loved the animated version of the Question too. Green Arrow, Black Canary, Huntress and Stargirl are also my favorite characters that appeared in Unlimited. My favorite JL episodes is the "Justice Lords" and "Starcrossed". I also loved the ones about Solomon Grundy, who I was suprised as hell was voiced by Mark Hamill!

Here's a nice little write up from the AVclub.
Cypher21
I enjoyed watching Superman go all out w/Darkseid, by having a no holds barred fight w/the guy. Darkseid being interested in Batman's ability to dodge the omega beam, too bad we can't see him take a greater interest now. Great episode, just wish the show wasn't over. Oh yeah, i found it funny that it took me to the final episode of Justice League to figure out that the voice of Martian Manhunter is the guy that does Dixon in Alias.
BoozeGood
Vernicious I have to disagree. I was not really into Justice League until it expanded to JLU. The first half of JLs first season was horrid. Everyone was so stodgy and it seemed way too much like the Superman animated series which I hated with a firey passion. I havent seen JL season two though I suspect it's better, but JLU won me completely over. What I loved was the way each episode, though entirely unconnected to the next was pretty in depth in terms of characterization. I really got the feel that this was, somewhat, how superheroes might interact with the real world in a way that I never got from the first season of JL. I can't imagine an episode of the original JL like the one where the human saboteurs attack the station in JLUs first season.
Dariendude15
Good God, I can't fucking believe my luck. I recorded this episode on my VCR because my TV was on the fritz and I was tired. So the next morning or so, I pop the sucker into the VCR in the kitchen (yes, we have a tv and vcr in the kitchen. sweet.), only to find... static. Seems the cable in my room wasn't plugged in correctly, so I got black and white picture and virtually no sound. So I got to SEE all the action, but missed out on pretty much all of the dialogue. So yeah... sucks to be me. OH! I have a question, though. Remember when Darksied and Supes fought in TAS, Dark used that crazy zig-zaggy obliterate-o-vision of his and killed somebody and Supes got REAL pissed? Who WAS that guy that got fried? I can't for the life of me remember who it was.

BoozeGood, I really suggest you go and look at JL 1st and 2nd season again. There were more development of storylines, characters, and the interaction among the original 7 was fantastic! They care for each other just like a family. Where else could you see Supes and Bats sharing a coffee in the Batmobile or The Flash showing GL his "pimpmobile".

In JLU they were somewhat cold and distant and lost most of their interaction due to the sheer volume of cramming in all those obscure characters and the time restraint, I admit. But when they allowed them to be the original 7, you get good episodes from JLU 2nd season finale!

Now if you wanted action, there was A Savage Time, Hereafter, Twilight, Heart Of the Cards, Starcrossed, Secret Society, and so many more episodes that had action, drama, and development that mesh together that was great! Seeing it on Boomerang made me remember how great JL really was, IMO!
alexias
I loved in the Gorilla City episode (I'm bad with episode titles: brainwashed I think?) at the end when WW catches the missile and slows it down but it looks like it took her out in the process. Bats screams, "Diana!" and runs over and starts trying to dig her out. J'onn comes over and just quietly puts his hand on his shoulder. And when Diana gets up she notices the dirt all over Bats' hands and gives him a small kiss on the cheek.

It's character stuff like that which, I feel, got limited due to the a.) much larger ensemble and b.) 1/2 hour format.
Stuckinowhere
I loved that part. That was the moment that started the whole Bats/WW pairing. It was supposed to be just an innocent, friendly kiss. The writers didn't think anything of it but people on forums were going crazy speculating that there was now something going on between Batman and Wonder Woman!

The death of Dan Turpin is still one of the most heartbreaking moments in Timmverse. It looks like the good guys win but before Darkseid and his army leaves Earth in a boobtube he just coldly kills Turpin with the Omega Beams. Everybody's reaction, especially Superman's was what really made me cry.
SpacePPoliceman

And gave us my FAVORITE bad guy line ever--"Had I known one human's death would pain you so, I would have killed more." Yes!

Darkseid never topped that one. "Super or otherwise, you are still just a man," was good, but not that good.
Lantern7
I still like to believe that the Omega Effect was used to teleport Turpin...that there's an island in the South Pacific where a new generation of children come into the world with thick accents and thicker eyebrows.

I did see a bit of "Twilight" last night. Watching Superman go bad-ass on Darkseid, to the point where Kal talked about the villain becoming "a greasy smear on my fist," was awesome. Naturally, Boomerang followed that with "Little Big Head Man," which is about 175 degrees removed from "Twilight."

I think that's how they managed to squeeze that by the censors. Previous eyebeams had been used to teleport people around, and they could just tell the censors that everyone jumped to the wrong conclusion when in fact Turpin was alive and slaving away in some pit somewhere on Apokolips. I know that the original plan had been to kill one or both of the Kents, but they couldn't get away with a permanent death, so they settled on Turpin.

That being said, Superman's had multiple occassions to totally cut loose on Darkseid, so I'm not sure why he waited until the final episode before unleashing the super punch.
Rai
Because if he'd done it earlier, then what could he do in the final episode?

Something that's been bugging me about "Destroyer" though -- so is Lois now dead? We saw the planet smash through past her (and Perry and Jimmy), but then explosions started on the lower levels. Did anyone survive that?

I'd think an event that important would have been covered.

He blew the top of the cat's head off in "Legacy". That certainly seemed to cut something loose.

That's a good point. The first time the Omega Beams were used against Kalibak Superman assumed he'd been killed, and Darkseid didn't correct him...

I've been enjoying the reruns of the first 2 seasons over on Boomerang. First season episodes were kinda boring in retrospect, which is probably why I had no desire to pick up the DVD. But from Twilight onward, the show just rocked. 2nd season JL was the pinacle of the show for me, so I'm looking forward to June 20(?) when it finally comes out on DVD.

And just to weigh in on the Superman cutting loose debate, I think he shoulda gone Super Saiyan in the series finale. Just sayin, blonde spikey-haired Clark would have been funny.
Stuckinowhere
My other favorite scene in "Destroyer" was the one with all of Steve Ditko's DC characters: Hawk and Dove, Captain Atom, The Creeper and the Question!
WWPrice The Man
Loved the finale. It was so great that they brought J'onn back. I said to my fiancee at the beginning of the episode that it just wouldn't be the same without him. My favorite were the lines between Supes, Bats and WW at the end. They just really summed up the friendship there. It was also an amazing nod to end on the Bat symbol, since that's what got the ball rolling. Probably one of the best series finales I've ever seen. Bring on the DVDs!
cambridgeguy

True, but that was more of a desperation move. Darkseid did most of the damage himself.

Because if he'd done it earlier, then what could he do in the final episode?

A sustained blast of heat vision? Admittedly he did this to Mongul already, but it would have been fun to see him unleash the full potential of this particular power. Superman tended to be a little conservative with this particular power in the animated shows.
Rai
True. Except for in "A Savage Time" when he sawed the planes in half with his heat vision, which was possibly the coolest use of his laser eyes ever.
ciscokidinsf
Whoa, just watched the finale and ...Dayumm! It was good, and finished in the proper note. (slightly better than the Teen Titans series finale)

Supes' destroying half the city while kicking ass did more damage than Darkseid's fleet. Seriously.

Still pissed on the non-explanation of the anti-life equation... I was like WTF? I thought it was a trap, but it wasn't. Supes should've saved the world, not Luthor, but, whatever.

Who knew J'onn digged older chicks? And that kiss from Giganta to Flash was sweet. You gotta hand it to Wally (whether on JL or TT, Flash is quite the Casanova)

I have the Batman TAS DVDs, and Superman TAS season 1...what am I missing? I haven't seen JL DVDs (are they out? what seasons?) same for Batman Beyond, though I might skip that one.

Sniff... no TT, no JL... now what?!? I'm out of cartoons except for Drawn Together. And I would've love to see a cameo of Captain Hero in JL
sef
Who knew J'onn digged older chicks?

Isn't J'onn some tens of thousands of years old?
scratcheyes
So was there ever an explanation about when J'onn went away? Did I miss it? All I know is he just wasn't around much anymore, but I didn't get the sense he had quit.

I did love it that he was in the finale. And that he was happy!

You know... it just occurred to me how much J'onn reminds me of the current Doctor (Who) (#9).
xtremesage
At the end of To Another Shore he left the Watchtower to spend time among humanity. He realised how isolated and disconnected he was.

The last you see of him is him shapeshifting into a human guise and walking into the street.

Hey I'm trying to remember a cartoon (anime maybe) I watched in high school, and you guys are the experts, so:

It's set on a different planet, or maybe a future Earth, and there's a guy that can transform into armor and fire off quantum energy. At one point I think he finds his sister and she has the same abilities. They came from some sort of crash or experimentation or something.

Does anyone know the show I'm talking about? Sorry, that's all a bit incoherent.
Bungalow Joy
Still pissed on the non-explanation of the anti-life equation

I'll forgive it due to early comic book conditioning: "...it is beyond our ken...!"
Lantern7
ciscokidinsf...basing from what I remember from Superman: The Dark Side and a few other places, the Anti-Life Equation basically takes free will from people.

Well, he did arrive on Earth in the 1950's, so it's possible he identifies more with that generation than younger humans.

(slightly better than the Teen Titans series finale)

Was the series finale of Teen Titans the ep. the one where Terra returns but she's adopted a civilian life?

Even though I don't really like the anime-influenced style of animation, I started watching TT a few weeks ago due to DCAU withdrawals and, once I became a bit immune from its manic-ness, I was surprised to find how good this show can be. Now, IMO, the show is wildly uneven from ep. to ep. when it comes to subject matter and its level of maturity but I've already seen 4 or 5 brilliant eps. And despite myself I've really taking a liking to Beast Boy and Starfire. V.O. actors delivery of some of those comedic lines are spot-on. Plus, some of these eps get REALLY dark. It's great!

Why was there ever a debate as to the identity of Robin? In the dozen or so eps I've seen so far, they've already alluded to it be Dick Grayson, like, 5 times. The one major tip-off was the ep. when we get to see inside Robin's mind and there's a flash of a memory where we see two silhouette acrobat figures fall to their deaths from the trapeze.

And one more thing, why does Cartoon Network show the TT reruns completely out of order? It's really frustrating.

So, I recommend TT for any of you who need to somehow fill the JLU void and haven't tried TT yet. You, like me, might be surprised by it.

There are also Justice League (and possibly Justice League Unlimited) DVDs that just collect a few episodes, if you absolutely can't wait for the full-season sets. Apparently they're going to wait a while before releasing full-season JLU DVD sets.

I also recommend Teen Titans, not that I watch it with any regularity. This fall there's going to be a Legion of Super-Heroes cartoon, and that's a must for me. If the Legion's involved I'm there like Jack the bear from Delaware. So I recommend that.

And then the writers kept it going during the Kid Justice League episode with GL, Supes, WW, and Bats versus Mordred. Kid GL's "Your girlfriend is mighty pushy" and Kid Batman's annoyed "She's NOT my girlfriend" was hilarious.

Who was the guy in a red suit with Hawgirl's team that looked like a Cap America clone in the last ep?
Lantern7
That would be Steel, who was part of the JLA that was based in Detroit.
Stuckinowhere
Not to be confused with the armored John Henry who I wish had been still voiced by Michael Dorn.

Seeing Toyman in the last few episodes reminded me how great this version created for the animated universe was. I mean he really creeped me out in his first appearance in Superman:TAS!
Viscount of Monte Cristo
I actually thought Steel's improvised shield-toss was a nice little nod to Cap.
