"Hereafter" is one of my absolute favorite JL episodes. It's just totally insane, with a bearded Superman driving around an alien wasteland in a 1950s convertible. To even attempt something like that took guts!

I finally caught the Justice Lord ep "A Better World" -- Thank you Boomerang. It was a great ep, but I was a little disappointed with the ending. I would have liked to have seen what happened with the Justice Lords once they went back to their dimension.

Actually, we don't know what happens to the Justice Lords; they may have been sent back to their dimension, they may have been imprisoned in our dimension. If it was me, I would keep them locked up where I could see them, because I would worry that they would find a way to regain their powers if I sent them back to their dimension.

Two words. Phantom Zone. They can party with Doomsday.

That would be an interesting concept to have a non-powered Clark Kent as a villain to Superman.

Has anyone found any Easter Eggs on the S1 DVDs?

And there are rumors that the new Flash book will star Barry. There seems to be some debate over the costume of the Flash that popped out of the Speed Force in IC #5 to announce that Superboy-Prime was loose. I haven't gone back to examine that scene myself, but some are saying that his belt design is Barry's, not Wally's.

I really hope they're wrong.

Oh, no, that was absolutely Barry's belt. I recall hearing that there'd only be the one Flash as of the One Year Later jump and I'm pretty sure Jay Garrick (the original Flash) has already popped up, so I think Barry's getting another temporary reprieve before running himself to death.

...I have no idea what warrants spoiling, comic book-wise, on a TV board.
lurk3000
There's a small article in the newest TV Guide about JLU. Timm hints that these characters could come back in some form. The season 1 DVD sales have been really good.
alexias
Is it just me, or does the animation look slightly different on the boomerang showings of JL? I don't know but it doesn't seem as sharp and maybe a little grainier?

Or was there a change from JL to JLU and I just didn't notice?
Junkyard Dog
We Canadians got an unexpected treat last night on YTV. (Wellll...those of us in Toronto did. I can't speak for other parts of the country.) The penultimate episode of JLU, "Alive!", was scheduled to air, but they also played the series finale, "Destroyer", immediately after it. Since YTV has occasionally treated the show as shoddily as good ol' Cartoon Network has, I have to say this was a nice way to end the last of the first-run episodes. They were good, too. It was nice to see the villians cut loose.
RandomWatcher
Tonight's episode:

Sucks to be Jon's apartment.

Nice shout-out to Teth-Adam, who I think becomes Black Adam.

Looks like there's something of a paradox. Will they or won't they eventually have Warhawk?
Fredericks
All that's needed to make Warhawk is one night of sexin', not an actual relationship. So in the current scheme of things the presence of Warhawk is not a paradox.

That said, I'm a bit pissed about the demise of Hawkgirl/GL. I've been following them since before the "U" got tacked on, and then they had to give 'em the heave ho? WTF.
Lantern7
Fun episode. Weird interpetation of the Hawk mythos and cramming a prior incarnation of John in there. Shadow Thief needs a new name, since we don't see him stealing. And it looks like Carter is swearing off Hawkgirl for now. If only we can follow the bizarre love quadrangle over the next season. Hey, wait a second...stinkin' Cartoon Network...

One thing...was the flashback kiss directly lifted from "Wild Cards"? Can't believe they got away with the hardcore hugging and kissing. Egyptian!John looked like he was running for second base.
Rai
I can't believe they got away with showing the dead bodies or calling Hawkgirl a "harlot". Weird episode. Kind of strange to have it be the last one before the two-part finale, no?

Nice catch on that Teth-Adam shout-out!
the fresh maker
During the Egyptian flashback, I kept wondering if Adult Swim had come on 30 minutes early....Could Shayera and Bashari have been any dumber about their affair? Hey, let's go and makeout in the open!

The quadrangle did fizzle out rather quickly, didn't it? Back to the old triangle.

Shayera Hol's biological clock was ticking in a past life. I wonder if it's ticking now. I don't blame John for not wanting to be "destiny's puppet".

I'm sure Batman's thrilled to be in his position right about now.

"Next time, I'll do you proper!"

Naughty, naughty show!
monsterzero
This was sort of a ho hum episode. Nothing great, but nothing to complain about. It was an interesting way to resolve the GL/HG relationship, though I wonder if there would have been more love triangle stuff had the show continued.

And can someone explain how Shadow Thief's powers work? Is he like Jonn, who can switch from corporeal to incorporeal? Or is he more like a liquid?
Vermicious Knid
This episode just made me wonder if someone has been reading A Wizard of Earthsea.

So John still loves Shayera, but will stay with Vixen. Why? Seriously, why? Just because she's the only black female in the League? Or are we to infer that John still hasn't forgiven her for her part in the Thanagarian occupation. Actually, what really bugs me is nobody bothered to even look up a timeline of Egyptian civilization because 6000 BCE is completely off.
fatneck
Seems to me Warhawk is coming and nothing gonna stop that baby! LOL
Also, John seems just a little too cowardly to not accept that him and Hawkgirl belongs together. Who gives a shit if it destiny or not! Reclaim your woman, John and stop the silliness!

Vixen, you are lovely, BUT a damn fool to be with a man who doesn't really want your ass...only he just wants your ass! Get it?

I guess we got sorta a resolve with GL/Hg and to be truthful, I'll take what I can get with this show! It was a good episode, compare to some of the lesser than average JLU of this season, IMO.

Chiming in late to the game and saying I enjoy the JL marathon on Boomerang and I realized I will always loved that JL better than JLU. Because the Big 7 was a family and the chemistry between them was one of respect and fondness, even when they bit each other head off at times! JLU will never hold a place in my heart like JL!
Bungalow Joy
Is it silly of me to have wondered if anyone notified Vixen's agent that she wouldn't be, er, available for her photoshoot?
Rai
I'm sure Vixen notified the right people. She's a pro!

Last night was actually a big JL/U night for me. I watched some of the season one shows from my DVDs and then tuned in for the JLU episode. I saw the Metemorpho one again and was amazed just how much he looked like the Silver Age Metemorpho. I think I even saw a shout-out to Sal Trapani, one of his definitive artists, on a sign in the background. They even included a "fun science fact" that made me giggle.

I also saw the War World episode again, but right before I did, I saw one of the special features where they mentioned how everyone hated the War World episode most of all, especially because it's Draga who defeats Mongul once and for all, not Superman. I was pretty surprised to hear that, because while it's just sort of an everage episode, I thought it was cool to have Draga turn out to be the hero of the piece after all. It certainly was a nice plot twist. What did everyone else think of that resolution?

And then I watched the new JLU episode. Man, I'm going to be sad to see this show go.
ciscokidinsf
I'm sure Batman's thrilled to be in his position right about now

Yeah, Batman is now like the Dr. Melfi of the show? WTF? Do supergals go... I'm feeling kinda blue, let me go talk to Bats, he'll hear me out and make it all better...

Plus, don't these guys watched Doc Brown in 'Back to the future' Specially GL? You don't go blabbin' about the future in the past. period.

It felt weird and very 'days of our lives' here. This one and last episode were just off, each for different reasons. The final 2 episodes better be beyond awesome.
fatneck
Speaking of off, didn't some of the animation in the 1st part? GL at one point looked almost bigger than the background.

To answer your question, Rai, War World was average and I didn't really care who defeated Mongul! I thought Supes pretty much won it and Draga clean it up, sorta speak.
Vercingetorix
I sort of liked this episode.

1) Carter, who is the swashbuckling hero of the past, learns that it's his destiny to love and lose Shayera by seeing the past, and accepts destiny. (Well, he skips the part about getting them killed, but go with it.)

2) John, the science fiction hero, learns that it's his destiny to love Shayera by seeing the future, but rejects destiny.

I'm not sure what it means, but it's kind of cool. Plus, Shadow Thief!!!
monsterzero
I think the problem with War World is that it sorta dragged. I haven't seen the episode in a while, but I remember feeling kinda bored during the whole thing. A big reason for that were the fights felt uninspired. I will say that the fight scenes are one of the things that improved over the course of the show.
lurk3000
That was a strange episode of JLU but I liked it overall. There's got to be more to the GL/Hawkgirl situation before the end of the series right?

War World is still the only episode I have not watched on the DVD (although I had seen it before).
Rai
Man, I wonder who these fans were that hated "War World" then. As I said before, it's just average, but not really hatable. I reserve that honor for "Fury".

Speaking of Amazon-centric episodes, I saw "Paradise Lost" again last night. I think I haven't seen it since it first aired. It was way better than I remembered and I totally nerded myself out when I referenced the comic that Superman and Wonder Woman battle each other under the illusion they're battling an enemy (Action Comics #600). It's a shame that "Fury" was so gawdawful, because I enjoyed delving into WW's heritage. I wonder if "Fury" killed any further interest there.

Also creepy was Hades leering at WW, considering what he hinted at in that later JLU episode (was it "Hunter's Moon"?).
DMike
I think you're thinking of "The Balance."
Kosher Redneck
Actually, what really bugs me is nobody bothered to even look up a timeline of Egyptian civilization because 6000 BCE is completely off.

...the first instance of such nonsensical foolery in DC Comics, ever!

Heh.

Do supergals go... I'm feeling kinda blue, let me go talk to Bats, he'll hear me out and make it all better...

He's Stereotypically Gay Batman!
Vermicious Knid
...the first instance of such nonsensical foolery in DC Comics, ever!

Yeah, I know. But 2 minutes with Google would have been all it took. Literally 2 minutes. It's not that hard. I'm sure they spent vastly more amounts of time looking into what Silver Age reference they could insert for fans to go "Hey, I know that!"

Love the screen name, BTW. Will you be voting for Kinky Friedman (if you were in Texas)?
sef
Didn't they also say it was a story 10,000 years in the making? They're not quite so good with numbers, I think.

(That said, I had no problem with the Egyptian alternate history. It is most definitely not our world... so if there were multiple Egyptian civilizations, or it got started earlier, I can accept that. As opposed to Stargate, whose writers also seem to have some trouble with numbers-when-it-comes-to-time.)
Dwayne McDuffie
Some of you guys are sort of missing the point. "Shadow of the Hawk" and "Ancient History" are specifically intended to be set in Egyptian pre-history. This golden age of Thanagarian influence only lasted about 40 years and the society colapsed within a generation of Katar's death, basically when the batteries ran out. all extraterrestrial technology was lost. We did this because we didn't want to claim that ancient Egyptian civilization was the result of extraterestrial influence. On our show, as in life, they figured stuff out for themselves, without help from any space aliens.
monsterzero
So it's kind of like Stargate. Or is it not like Stargate? I haven't seen that movie in ages. In any case, I'm pretty sure there was more sex (tastefully off screen, of course) in Ancient History than in Stargate, and that's a plus in my book.
Viscount of Monte Cristo
Not like Stargate. In Stargate, the Goa'uld built the pyramids, and created Egyptian society. Then Ra left, and we kinda puttered on afterward.
sef
specifically intended to be set in Egyptian pre-history

As I said: multiple Egyptian civilizations :).
No Touching
I have to say that I enjoyed this melding of the Hawkman mythos. It was probably the simplest way to tackle it. I still have no understanding of Post-Crisis Hawk continuity.

If only the real DCU were as simple as the DCAU, but then again the DCAU had (has?) the advantage of cherry-picking the best of 70 years of continuity.
lurk3000
I think that's the beauty of the animated series. They can pick and choose from DC history so we get what works best. Thanks for everything Dwayne McDuffie(Bruce Timm too). Any chance for a Question animated series? (Wink, wink - nudge, nudge)
MereyGB
Any chance for a Question animated series? (Wink, wink - nudge, nudge)

I second that.

And we get some weekly Question starting next week in 52. From what I hear, the DCU Question will have a bit of the DCAU Question in him. Yay!
Vermicious Knid
I actually got an answer. How interesting. I don't think it was clear enough that the Thanagarian influenced civilization contributed nothing to the later rise of Egypt, as ya know, it looked exactly the same. But most people don't have a background in archaeology and wouldn't find it annoying.

Now if someone could give me a good reason for GL sticking with Vixen....
Perfect Xero
The only part of the episode that I really liked was the blood/wine fake out, that was kind of fun.

Otherwise, maybe it's just that I can't stand any version of Hawkman, but I just didn't care for it.
RandomWatcher
Awesome episode!

"We have a little problem."

Gee, do ya think, Lex? Ladies and gentlemen, I present the Understatement of Eternity to Lex Luthor.

Lex makes a damn good villain. Ruthless, merciless, manipulative, but always willing to give you a second chance if you earn it, like Killer Frost.

"It could have gone either way."
"It could have, couldn't it?"
"Not really, but why speak ill of the dead?"

That's the Luthor we all know, hate, and in my case, reluctantly admire.

The guy in the chair who stopped time, his name was Metron? What's the story on him?

It was great to see the villains going at each other, though you really couldn't tell who was what side.
RandomWatcher
I'm not entirely sure as I'm not that familiar with DC, but I think Metron is one of the Old Gods.
Lantern7
This sucks...the penultimate episode of JLU is 99 percent supervillains beating the tar out of each other, and Lex showing his devotion to Brainiac...except he invokes Darkseid. Not that I'm complaining, but how did that happen? Just so random.

I feel that anybody not into comics wouldn't care about most of the bad guys. I figured Shade would have given up on secret societies by now. And yes, RandomWatcher, Metron is a New God.
Fredericks
I likeded it. Didn't think I'd take to an episode of baddies going at each other, but the revelation of Darkseid was pretty much worth it. I knew things were going to be bad when the guy ("the guy"...yes, I'm not much up on my DC) showed up tell Lex his ass was going to be so.very.sorry. in the middle of the episode. Take a bloody hint already. But having Lex and his flunkies show up at the Tower to tell Supes they broke the cookie jar? Priceless.

I'm guessing from here on out there'll be plenty of shit making high-velocity contact with fan.
Readster
The guy in the chair who stopped time, his name was Metron? What's the story on him?

Metron is the keeper of Time to the New Gods of New Genesis. He's kind of like that chronicler of events but he will interfer when he knows things need to be changed for the better. That's why he asked Luthor not to do what he was doing but even Metron can't stop Darkseid.
Rai
I think it was pretty clear that what Luthor intended on doing was reviving Brainiac, but it went horribly awry and revived Darkseid instead. WOO! Oh, how I love Darkseid.

That said though, his voice sounds different to me. I wonder if they had to get a new actor for him.

Also, I hope Toyman bites it. God, he is too CREEPY.
sef
I likeded it too!

Yeah, I thought the LoD infighting went on a bit long, but Lex got to be snarky to lots of people -- including Grod! -- so it was worth it.
No Touching
Yes, a great episode. I still can't get over that this show, and by proxy the universe that began over a decade ago with Batman, is ending.

As for the request of a DCAU/Timmverse Question series, I've got an even better idea: Keith Giffien's Justice Super Buddies. Seriously, the trade paperback collections (Formerly Known as the Justice League and I Can't Believe It's Not The Justice League!) are some of the funniest stuff around. After Infinite Crisis, I don't think there's any chance of seeing a revival (what with Max Lord being an evil dead bastard, Blue Beetle being dead, etc.), but this kind of absurdity would be perfectly suited to a 22-minute animated show.
Vermicious Knid
The Legion of Doom building hunkering down in a swamp was a total Superfriends moment. Had to be deliberate.

I don't get how his Braniac-detector ended up with Darkseid either. And I'm sure there's going to be some comic book technobabble answer to why they all didn't die when Darkseid blew up the ship.
lurk3000
According to IMDB it was Michael Ironside as Darkseid. He was the original voice in Superman:TAS, but he did sound different. Is Darkseid mixed in with Brainiac?

I'm also curious to see how the Legion of Doom escaped Darkseid's wrath.
Can't wait for the (sniff) last episode.

Wow - I never noticed the KISS reference. This episode was "Alive" next week's "Destroyer".
BZoetic
Luthor wound up putting Darkseid back together rather than re-integrating Brainiac because his pride got the better of his calculating sense -- always the fatal character flaw with Lex when he's written properly. Complete with a hackneyed "sage advice" warning from Metron which he promptly ignored, which is also in keeping. So you see, this wasn't an arbitrary thing at all -- they didn't just pull Darkseid out of their asses to throw in a "wrong villain" at the last moment. Metron's appearance foreshadowed Darkseid's return, so how could that be random?

It's fitting that all will come to an end with the JLU fighting arguably the most powerful villain in the DC universe. Don't like the promo's that suggest Lex and Metron find the Anti-Life Equation to defeat Darkseid when all is said and done -- that's stealing Batman's thunder. It's his job to save all their asses in the end, not Lex's.

At least Boomerang picked up the franchise so I can get a daily fix instead of a "buried in a crappy time slot amidst crappy anime by Cartoon Network" fix.
