Grudge Match is a really cool, if somewhat shallow, episode. The fight scenes were fantastic. I always appreciate it when the animators take the time to arrange the fights like a Hong Kong action flick. Pretty much every scene with Huntress and Canary was a treat to watch. And some of the blows that Wonder Woman landed on Hawkgirl looked impressively painful.
Only one minor quibble, and that's the return of the incredibly elastic power level of the heavy hitters (Supes, WW, GL). I mean, why would WW even bother to block Huntress's blows? And couldn't she just punch a hole straight thru Shayera? (and, yeah, I'm aware that the real reason is to tell a fun story, but it still doesn't make any sense).

Style. It's one thing for the hits not to hurt you. It's a whole other thing to not let them hit you, despite that fact.

Weak episode. Couldn't quite get into it, and I'm not really a catfight kinda guy. It's just a stretch that the Roulette and the bad guys could hypnotize four JLAdies, including Wonder Woman, and nobody figures it out except Huntress. Okay, maybe Question would have, but he's too busy fucking around Baskin-Robbins.

Too true; the idea that none of the leaguers like Bruce or J'onn didn't figure out what's going on is a bit of a stretch. Though I did love the part where Huntress asks the Question what he's wearing and he gives her a straight answer, not realizing that she's flirting with him.

I actually liked this episode, out of the JLU era, Black Canary and Huntress are two of my favorite characters. I wish they could do a Birds of Prey series featuring these two ladies plus Barbara/Oracle (not sure how they could pull that one off since we know her outcome in Batman Beyond). If not that idea, then the idea I read before about a Green Arrow/Black Canary/Huntress/Question series. Back to this episode, I loved seeing WW take down basically everyone, and the fight scenes were very well choreographed, the artists need great praise for making it work like it did. The fight scenes had me in shock w/what they almost did, like WW almost killing Vixen and Shayera by bashing they heads together, no way they would have survived that. I always thought Shayera was a better fighter than WW, but they proved us wrong w/tonights episode. I see a few people didn't like this episode, but I guess i'm in the minority that likes a little girl on girl action...........CATFIGHT!

I really liked "Chickapalooza." Along with great fights and one-liners, The Question uncovered Baskin Robbins' great lie!
Since it was a shallow episode, this plot hole is a nitpick. But Roulette and Sonar taking over the female JLUers' coms? If they could take over the women's coms, wouldn't they take over the men's coms, too? If they could figure out how to brainwash the JLU, why would they stop with just the women? But again, that really wasn't the point of the episode.
I imagine the last thing anyone wants to hear when WW is about to bash their head in is: "You two better have an explanation for this."

Or perhaps the brainwashing sent WW into a berserker rage that helped her overpower Shayera.

It doesn't matter if Shayera is a better fighter, Wonder Woman is super strong and pretty much invulnerable. She's gone one on one with Superman on multiple occasions and done well. Shayera couldn't do a thing to Wonder Woman if she didn't have her mace.

How could Shayera and WW be flying in that enclosed ring? That's the one thing that bugged me about the episode.

As much as I liked seeing Huntress, Black Canary, and Vixen, I thought this episode was pretty weak story wise. There were just too many plot holes. If Lex Luthor was somehow able to access the JLU communicators and convert them to mind control devices, you figure that he wouldn't have wasted time setting up meta-brawls for Roulette. Also, if Huntress was able to spot that Canary was off her game, wouldn't any of the other JLU members have noticed something off about the other women. Unless, of course, Black Canary was the only member participating regularly in the brawls.
Sometimes I think the over-arching story line with Lex Luthor and the Legion of Doom isn't all that great of an idea since that limits the opportunity of one-shot shows that don't have anything to do with the LoD or Luthor. On it's own, this episode would have been pretty good but when you factor in Luthor's involvement, it doesn't make much sense.

It would have probably worked better if they did this storyline while Grod was in charge and the Legion was still trying to stay undercover.

A couple things:
Technically Wonder Woman is not invulnerable like Supes is. She's massively strong, but the whole point of the bracelets is that she's got to deflect/block various attacks that could otherwise hurt her. Of course they cheat physical resilience all the time, for all the characters, who stand up to damage that should be killing them horribly.
I'm not sure where the "Shayera is a better fighter than WW" sentiment comes from. I love Shayera, one of my favorite characters since the beginning of the show, but WW is, in DC canon, second only to Supes (in his various incarnations) as a physical fighter in the Justice League.
There are characters that are more powerful in terms of energy projection/manipulation type stuff (Green Lantern), there are characters that can do crazy stuff with magic (Dr. Fate), there are characters that probably have more sheer technical fighting skill (Batman), and J'onn is arguably the most powerful of all, when you add all his various powers together.
But in terms of fighting skill + physical power + experience, in a straight up fight like in this ep, WW outclasses Shayera and everyone else besides Supes massively. Really, they had to downgrade her to even make the fights fun. For example, in an upcoming episode, she's seen destroying various huge warships largely by just ramming her way through them. So, she can punch battleships in half but not take out Vixen?
My fanwank is that Roulette wants metabrawl fights to be entertaining, not efficient. So whatever control schemes they used were oriented towards flashy, extended fights.

I had my own fanwank inspired by Batman: Hush. I remember the rather silly fight where Batman basically manhandles a Superman who's being controlled by Poison Ivy. Jeph Loeb basically explains away why Superman isn't squashing Bats by saying that Supes is resisting the mind control with all his might. So I guess you could say that WW is possibly doing the same thing in this episode, which explains why she doesn't just tear Shayera's wings off.

If I were a supervillian, I'd use them as spies. That is, if I didn't simply tell Wonder Woman to throw the Watchtower into the Pacific Ocean and kill the rest of the League.
That was the most unbelievable part of the episode: Supervillians can control half the Justice League, and what do they do with that power? Stage catfights. The second most unbelievable part of the episode? That no one noticed that the catfights were happening. Except, apparently, the thousands of members of the audience and whoever sold them the tickets.
All that notwithstanding, I liked the interaction between Huntress and Black Canary.

Mar 13, 2006 @ 5:32 pm
Supervillians are always coming up with ways to control superheroes. Each way has limitations.
In this case, I came to the conclusion that it was due to them being asleep, and there would be a couple of ways of dealing with them by a group of superheroes.

On the one hand, making all the fighting heroes women was cheesy. On the other hand, the Justice Society story this was based on invovled Roulette capturing a number of JSA members and forcing them to compete in various ways. A number of male heroes she captured had serious rivalries between them, and the story was a way to explore those rivalries and bring some resolution to them. In JLU, the most serious emotional rivalries we've seen have been between these female characters, so it made sense to use them in the story.

Really, if you could control half the League wouldn't you use them to say, break into S.T.A.R. Labs? Especially if you're looking for superscience ways to bring back Braniac.
First I've heard of this; possible GL movie
On The Xverse forums, scribe Simon Kinberg ("Mr. & Mrs. Smith", "X-Men: The Last Stand") made this comment regarding a Green Lantern film: "I know Warner Brothers is actively developing the feature. I think they're even talking about developing a trilogy. I would imagine their approach will be very grounded in reality, as that seems to be the tone they've used for other recent DC films"

Why why why did Cartoon Network pull last night's episode of JLU? They always do this! Can't these assholes just show the final four episodes and be done with it? As of Friday, 3/17, last night's episode was still on their schedule and they pull it at the last minute with no reason and no explanation as to when they're finally going to show the last episodes of this series. I will be so happy when they finally do air because then I'll never have to watch anything on the fucking Cartoon Network ever again!

That animation style does NOTHING for me. Just like Teen Titans, The Batman, and whatever poorly drawn shite that they decide to replace JL with.
Personally there aren't enough shows that have the animation style of the good old 80's. Like G1-Transformers (as good as it was when I first watched it).

I've never been big on Japanime. I know most everyone calls it Anime now. I still am a throwback to Japanime. I just don't get it.
I don't like any kind of kiddie anime style. That includes anything with Big Talking Heads, Tear Streaming, or anything like that. Which pretty much excludes EVERYTHING that is on Cartoon Network.
And I hate The Batman and other things, because it's NOT Justice League/B:TAS, etc.

Wow. And this after I just spotted someone who might be your mirror opposite on this issue. She's so into anime, particularly One Piece, that she wants to live in Japan, and of course, it's the absence of new One Piece that's upsetting her. She could care less for JLU, or even Teen Titans.

I've avoided Teen Titans because of it, but just yesterday I was listening to a Marv Wolfman interview and he was saying that he really enjoyed the show and was surprised that they pushed through so many dark story lines. Is that true? I think I'd be interested in that. I might even be able to look past the over-exaggerated expressions and actions.

The season 1 DVD of JL comes out today. Looking back, it's amazing how crappy the first season was compared to everything else. Superman was a wimp, GL was an asshole, WW was dull, and Flash was an incompetent kid. I'm glad the producers managed to turn things around. There are a few good episodes on the set (Legends, IJ4A), but I think the season 2 set is the better buy.

I really don't think this comparison is at all valid. Airline Emergency Guides are functional and utilitarian because they have a specific purpose - they're not art. They're not anywhere near the aesthetic value of a Monet, and further, I don't have to wade through a million airline emergency guides to find a Monet. Whereas I have already waded through countless hours of poorly drawn Japanime, including the critically acclaimed stuff by Miyazaki, and find all of it wanting in terms of satisfying me either on a dramatic story level or as visual art.
