I've heard froom different gossip sources that Jill Scott is going to be on four episodes of Girlfriends. She's going to play a love interest for William and will play an integral part in all 4 of the women's lives. Don't know what that means but I hope J-I-L-L-S-C-O-TTTTTTTTT can breathe some new life into the show.
Quag
It's worth a shot. Although I usually detest shows that do the Very Special Guest Stars thing (Will & Grace, I'm looking at you!), I love me some Jill Scott; and the show right now is on life support, so I say go for it. I just hope JS can act. In the name of all that's good and holy, please don't be as wooden as Eve!
raramama
Jill Scoot would make a good girlfriend for William. I really miss his cop fiancee' - she was cute and funny.

I'm still holding out for William and Joan though. He's the only one that can put up with her.

I really don't think she'll be that bad and I don't know why. She just seems like she would be a natural at acting. Then again I love Jill Scott more than a little bit so I'll admit that I'm more than a little biased.
Meedis
Jill Scott I believe will do well. She just has this presence about her. Maybe there's hope for Girlfriends after all. Malik Yoba also returns to the show next Monday according to the spoilers...couldn't get enough of Joan bashing his head in...*LOL*.
Stardancer2001
Whoa! A new episode just snuck up on me.

So William is still married to Lynn? Poor man.

Joan just proved how crazy she is by believing in psychics and such.

There may be hope for Girlfriends yet!
Meedis
Yeah...so the marriage really did happen. I thought they were conveniently forgetting about it. But somehow I suppose by not having Lynn and William really together in any meaningful scenes, it strangely worked out...despite taking almost five whole episodes to bring up again.

Jill Scott wasn't too bad...with what she was given to work with. Look forward to seeing the William/Jill (I mean, did he even get her name) story unfold.

Maya about cracked me up when she believed the "crazy man" (good comedic actor by the way...forget his name) and thanked him for his drivel.

Overall...it was a grade B episode, which is much better than the D and F episodes earlier in the season.
mbridgii
This is why I don't really pay much attention to the NAACP:

Never mind that they nominate a suspected statutory rapist for an Image Award, but out of the entire cast, who gets nominated?

Congratulations to Diana's daughter, who annoyed me to no end with her whiny voice and overacting. Meanwhile, the Supporting Actress category (where I assume the other ladies would be) is crawling with children (the girl from "One on One" and both girls from "Bernie Mac")?

And how does that no-talent Chico Benymon from "Half and Half" get a nod and Reggie Hayes does not? Not to mention that the boy from "My Wife and Kids" and that freaking Professor Oglevee are up.

Whatever.
Meedis
Never mind that they nominate a suspected statutory rapist for an Image Award

I must be living in the Nile. Who are you referring to?

And yeah, I'd sooner have chosen Golden Brooks, who despite her ghetto treatings of William (though face it, all four women dog him), is the better of the two main actresses.

Good point on Reggie Hayes!
nea1982
R. Kelly is the alleged rapist.
raramama
I really enjoy everyone's performances on the show.

Last night was kind of "meh" for me. I don't enjoy the outdoor scenes as much.
KBear
Last night's episode was good but it did leave me with a frightening thought. As crazy and desperate as Joan is right now to get married and have kids, how much crazier and desperate will she be now that her gynecologist has given her a deadline to get pregnant? Joan might grab some stranger off the street and make him become her baby's daddy. The brothers in LA should quake in fear. I think Jill Scott will be good on the show but I think Lynn might still be the woman in front of William that he seeks. The psychic was Richard Kind who use to be on Spin City.
Marla Singer
I was very happy to see Jill Scott on last night's show. I had no idea she's be joining the cast (at least temporarily.) I also thought that Persia looked beautiful last night with her hair pulled back.

I wish I could spend a day in the wardrobe dept. of this show.
Meedis
D'oh...thanks nea1982! I had limited my scope to comedic actors and I was straining trying to figure out who among them could be facing that charge. I mean I did remember seeing a commercial where Flex was getting his groove back and he finds out the lady could be underage. But I was thinking...that's only a TV show. And I never watched it so I don't know the resolution.
LeeLeeDiva
Well, last night went a little ways toward restoring my hope in the show, with the exception of the lameness that was bringing the Lynn/William storyline back to the forefront after umpteen episodes have passed.

Richard Kind was great last night, and it tickled me to no end to find out that he basically stood on the street hollering out phrases until it hit home for someone. Heh. I liked the addition of Jill Scott, but I'm not interested in getting too invested in her character because I doubt Jill will have the time or desire to devote to becoming a semi-regular for any extended period of time.

The scene where Joan calls Brock on his celly while looking at him through the window? Lame. Joan should've either walked in, strapped on a set of cajones and told dude to his face or left the premises and called him like a proper chickened-out person. [/nitpick] As a matter of fact, Joan just bugged me, period. Which is to be expected. And not really necessitating comment.

Where was Pocket Todd last night?

Why won't William and Lynn recognize that they were meant to be together?

Since when is 32 the time when a woman's clock starts ticking in bass?

Will these questions ever be answered? I'll have to tune in to see...
DesiQueen
Just watched tonight's episode...I thouhgt it was new since its about V-day, but no posts in this thread, so I'm not sure...
I haven't gotten to watch this show all semester because I have class when it airs. So can anyone catch me up with a quickie summary of whats been goin on? Last I saw was the one where Joan and Brock went to Vegas...
Thanks!!
Meedis
Very nice and funny episode tonight.

The William/Jill Scott story is compelling. What's behind that mysterious Jill that she's hiding from William? What finally compelled her to give the Willster a shot? The eying between the two in the end leaves me a state of suspense.

Did Toni just do a selfless act? No not buying Joan the expensive gift and pestering her all day. Actually taking back her $2500 shoes for Todd. Color me impressed. Though, I'm sure she'll regress back...:-)

Joan shocks all by turning down the available Davis. Nice to see him back on the screen. As a sidenote, I think Abby would've been a bit more believeable if he played Abby's ex and Kadeem played the sportscaster...perhaps the show might've made another season...but that's just me penny thoughts.

Back on topic, thank your lucky stars Davis!

ETA...DesiQueen, if noone else gives you a quick synopsis, I'll do so tomorrow...:-) Speaking of which, come on guys, the episode was GOOD tonight!
Sunnybelle
I really liked this episode b/c it had Toni and Todd! I was getting tired of Toni being selfish and Todd being the doting invisible husband. This is my second season watching and I'm hoping these get on DVD so I can see the earlier stuff.

Yay for Joan, she really made me believe that she liked being alone. That was funny about the "pervert" she was yelling at.

I also liked how Mya seemed to not lose her head with the wealthy athlete. I'm hoping to see more of him.

I think whoever wrote this episode should continue b/c the characters seem so much better.
Meedis

I agree. This episode was almost reminiscent of its glory days. Let's hope they don't slip back.

Edited for tense...bad, bad tense.
KBear
It was actually a very good episode. Joan acted like a normal mature woman. She wasn't falling apart like she usually does and she didn't pounce on Davis because he was available. Toni was actually nice and thinking of others. I liked the scene when she gave Todd her present, returning those $2500 boots. William and Lynn were funny as usual and I'm interested in seeing William's relationship with Donna. I think I'm going to like Jill Scott in this role. Also it should be fun watching Maya date a rich ball player. Won't Toni be jealous. The last few episodes have been pretty good. Maybe they have gotten the bad episodes out of their system.
ColdGreg
Yea! The episode didn't suck. I may be able to return to the Girlfriends fold after all.

Back on topic, thank your lucky stars Davis!

Hee. I totally thought the same thing. Joan is poison. Run!

Not sure what I think of the William/Jill Scott storyline yet, but I am intrigued (despite being a hardcore William/Lynn shipper). I like Jill Scott and anything that gives Reggie Hays more screen time is a good thing. Word on him and the rest of the supporting cast being snubbed at the Image Awards.

Now if they'd only stop making Toni such a one note character, I'd be happy.
Quag
Instead of watching the crapfest that Girlfriends is, I watched a PBS show on Tupperware.

Tupperware, people!

Sounds like last night's ep wasn't so bad though. I'm really interested to see how my girl Jill is doing, especially since she's linked with the best character on the show, William.

Hee!! I was so going to watch that!!! I actually thought it would be pretty interesting. How was it? I then remembered Girlfriends was on and that it was new so I thought I would give it a chance. Glad I did, pretty good episode.

Like when Lynn was waiting at the bus stop for Jill Scott/Donna. And she held the camera phone up to her to make sure that was her. What made that funny to me was that it meant William took her picture with the phone earlier. It reminded me of how bad I want a camera phone and how I am always finding myself in situations where I really wish I had one handy (parking ticket, seeing a really freaky person and none of your friends are around to laugh with you, you know). But I digress.......

Also loved the athlete. I'm a sucker for an accent!
Quag
ilikecookies, I chose the Tupperware special over Girlfriends because I don't have TiVO yet; and I figured I'm more likely to catch a rerun of Girlfriends than of the special. The Tupperware special was pretty good. E-mail me if you want more info.
Meedis
Wow Tupperware...:-) I never knew a study on Tupperware would warrant a PBS special.

Anyway quick synopsis time (actually not much happening character wise)

Joan - Broke up with Brock after disagreement with him on having kids. Joan finds out kids don't like her but they come around by end of half hour. She tortures all by toying with getting back with Brock after phony psychic on the street tells her he's the one. But due to doctor telling her she only has a couple years before her biological clock stops ticking, she decides against getting back with Brock. Now she's happily single.

Toni - She finds out from Todd that 'the love of her life' called after said love sends her a card with a check. Toni sees "Greg" against Todd's wishes just so she could have revenge against Greg but it backfires and almost forces her to lose Todd. (Who are we kidding? He's not going anywhere.) She continues to stay relatively self-absorbed with occasional hints of clue.

Lynn - Supposedly still working on documentary on "Working Women". She spends most of her time still pestering William, her first husband, and taking advantage of his health insurance while the quickie marriage is still legal.

Maya - She and Darnell had a nice moment (not sure if it'll lead to them getting back together or not) over the holidays. She continues to go to school after getting Toni's psycho brother off her hair. She actually seems to work a little bit at her job.

William - Has partial custody of his "nephew-son". Continues to excel at law firm, especially now that Maya's working a little bit. Same psycho as Joan's leads William to pursue "Jill Scott".

That's as much as I can remember DesiQueen!

Hee! Believe dat, Meedis! And watching middle-aged women from the Fifties get excited about plastic bowls was a heckuva lot more exciting than the lame-i-tude of Girlfriends lately.

Okay, maybe not; but I won't know fer sure until I catch the rerun of Monday's ep.
ColdGreg
OK, what is up with the Toni story line? I'll be happy if they actually are going to make her less one dimensional, but the therapist thing is just...ugh. Perhaps I started re-watching too soon. Eh, I'll give it another week.
Meedis
That's the thing with Toni...she has little epipheny's but then digresses back to the same behavior. It'd be nice to see her character grow a little bit. Is that asking too much?

Wow...Beverly Johnson still looks smoking...she must be in her 50's now, right?

Okay and why haven't they advanced the Jill Scott plot tonight? I was intrigued and then they leave me hanging. I'm hoping it's explored next week.

And how stupid was Lynn to put all her alimony money on some dot. She knows damn well she can pester William for it at another time. Her character's the queen hustler...hard to believe she'd get out hustled by William. But nice move on managing Maya's apartment complex and I'm assuming landing an apartment as part of the perks.

This episode was so-so, though. And yeah right, Jimmy Carter was at the auction. Puh-leeze!
mbridgii
Lame.

I missed last week's episode, that everyone seemed to think was a possible "rebirth" of "Girlfriends". I come back to this bit of tripe.

Now the lame sitcom device of the slacker as building manager. So, Maya will be complaining about a clogged sink and Lynn will never fix it. Seen it.

And William, as much as I like him generally, is an idiot to marry Lynn in the first place. But which is the lamer plot: for a lawyer to marry someone he doesn't love without a pre-nup? Or, for the woman to whom he was married for about a month (who is supposedly his friend) to seek alimony? I could see Toni doing something like that, but Lynn? She a mooch, but not malicious.

Beverly Johnson still looks good, but that little subplot was weak. Beverly was great, but it was a lame way to get her and Toni in a conversation. Speaking of bad "guest star" moments, the use of "Jimmy Carter"? Sure. He would be at a pathetic silent auction to raise $60K. Not to mention talking to Maya.

And what's with the therapist? Another lame plot contrivance - does anyone really think Toni will change? I mean, she supposedly found Jesus a couple years back, after she went broke. Does Joan still see her therapist? It doesn't seem to have helped her with her issues any either.

I don't think TPTB know what to do with these characters now, so they just throw them into cyclical situations: they learn a lesson, then go back to destructive behavior. Then, another lesson.

OT: ITA, Meedis, that "Abby" would have been better had Kadeem and Randy switched parts. Of course, Sydney would still be there, so the show would still suck. Just less.
Quag
Where the hell's Jill Scott when you need her?

Actually, I'm okay with JS being a recurring character and not a regular character; but we sho' coulda used a sistah last night.

The only part of last night I liked was when Joan told Toni about her lowdown selfish ways and when they showed that thought dawning on Toni (both with Joan and with the therapist).

As much as I like me some William, his plotline with Lynn got a little rank last night. Like mbridgii, I cry foul on this one. Lynn is a perpetual mooch, yeah, but I don't think she would take William out like that.

Jimmy Carter? There are no words.

Beverly Johnson? Still much love for her, but her appearance last night was completely wasted; and Toni's stalker ways were totally silly. Bev could have been used so much more effectively.
Stardancer2001
I am just amazed that Lynn lands on her feet everytime her shenanigans fall apart. But damn, she could have lived off Wiliam's money for a while instaed of spending it on a painting! And I sincerely hope that William got some extra booty from her to give up that much cash.
mbridgii
William got nothing.

It was a stupid "plot" to begin with, and it ended dumb as well. How much could this painting have cost? This would have made more sense had William married Toni on the spur of the moment; I don't see Lynn trying to take him for a ride like that - but they have painted all of these women as "heifers" for a little while now.

Speaking of which: I've said this before, but how about a moratorium on calling your friends "heifers" and "bitches". What is a funny throwaway line every few episodes becomes trite and sad when used every week.
ColdGreg
Wait a minute. Lynn's getting alimony from a marriage that was never consumated? That ain't right legally. If there's anything I've learned from my years of TV watching, it's that.

Oh, dear god. Did I just try to apply logic to a Girlfriends sub-plot? Clearly I need to go get much more coffee.
mbridgii
If William were a smart attorney, he would have tried for an annulment, instead of a divorce.

Now I'm not an attorney or anything, but since he and Lynn did have relations in the past, a judge could consider that reason enough for there to have been "consummation" and not granted an annulment - it would have been smart writing for them to include something like that in the script though.
Meedis
You give the show way too much credit mbrdgii to even think they gave that technicality the foggiest bit of thought. Anyway here's my Girlfriends cover for the TWoP Pixel Challenge. So completes the UPN Monday night line-up.

Hilarious Meedis!

The Mya storyline was way too predictable. I didn't think it would be wrapped up like that so quick though. I liked that Tony finally showed a mature side.
ColdGreg
Anyway here's my Girlfriends cover for the TWoP Pixel Challenge.

Hee. The best part? The bar code over Joan's face.
Meedis
Thanks you two...actually the bar code over Joan was the most funny part to me as well.

As for the episode, hello where's Jill Scott? This is week two they haven't mentioned her. William hasn't even mentioned to the "Girlfriends" how the date went. Geesh...maybe they'll bring it up next episode.

As for the current plot, yeah baseball player plot was a bit predictable. I too am surprised they wrapped it up as quickly as they did. Wow, I'm really surprised Toni stood up for Maya like that. It was nice to have her relate her personal experiences to the situation. (I wonder being a Dallas Cowboys cheerleader if she had a personal experience like that.)

Okay as stale as the joke was, I admit to cracking up everytime William's friend kept calling Lynn Gonorrhea.
nea1982
Lynn continues to be annoying. Toni is changing, and I am happy.

Maya is *so* going to hook up with her neighbor.
10rags
Hello, I never thought to look for a Girlfriends forum. I've started watching the show again in the last two weeks. The begining of the season was way to annoying for me. Todd & Toni has gotten pointless and Joan too, too neurotic to be watchable. William the successful black lawyer who can get no booty? Only in California. I tend to forget to tune in because I don't cut the television on until the Parkers go off.

I'm really hoping that the current improvement continues. More comedy less PSA.
Meedis
I tend to forget to tune in because I don't cut the television on until the Parkers go off.

That's so funny. If I happen to be home by 7PM, I usually wait until 7:32PM to turn on the TV. In essence, I miss a minute of Shelley in the process.
Marla Singer
I kinda liked the episode, I was let down that the baseball player storyline came and went so quickly (mostly b/c I think the guy that played Alex looks like an attractive version of Vin Diesel) but I was thrilled that he bought Mya the exact same couch that my husband and I just bought.
Meedis
Okay okay. I'll cop to being the only one who watched Girlfriends this past Monday night.

The episode. Okay.

What I liked:

Jennifer Lewis guest appearance. It's nice seeing her make an appearance. I didn't even question her when she claimed to have purposely smoked in Toni's house to make Toni choose between her and Todd.

Toni's hairstyle. I found myself liking it one minute and hating it the next. I'm currently liking it, though.

The show even had a little continuity by bringing up Joan's past trips to the psychiatrist. And I loved how Lynn and Maya denied telling Joan that she should seek help.

What I Didn't Like:

Believe it or not, I didn't care for the William/Jill Scott story. I think what I hated was they brought it back as abruptly as they yanked it off. It was also pretty contrived that a bunch of dogs would keep William/Jill on top of the car for the duration of the episode and nobody would've came by.

There...my confession is out!
Oprime
I didn't care for the Jill Scott/ William storyline this episode either, it seems she's becoming a bit of a stereotype.
ColdGreg
Word to your entire post Meedis. The only thing I will add is that the whole "mo-cha" thing was just dumbass. These people really are trying to drive me away from this show, aren't they?
Dark Child
hey i thought the mo-cha thing was funny, maybe it strikes too close to home. Once in a resteraunt a young lady asked for some boonies wine. Everyone was puzzled, what is boonies and then someone said boones farm? she said yeah. We don't server that how about a zifindale?
mbridgii
Even though I was going back and forth between "Raymond" and "Girlfriends", I wasn't all that interested here.

I admit to not seeing the first episode featuring Jill Scott. She seemed OK here, but what's with this whole "two different worlds" thing they are trying to put together? It's not like Yvonne was out buying $7000 purses, and he was all set to marry her. Heck, Maya is only a job choice away from catching the bus her damn self.

Maybe if the difficult word with "latte" or another of those coffee house terms, it would have been funny. I can't imagine a black woman who doesn't know how to pronounce "mocha" (maybe seeing it in print was the shocker).

The initial dog? Funny. Later, with the others? Joke over.

And Joan? You never should have left therapy, all this talk about going back. You need to just get the lifetime rate now, and spare yourself the grief.
10rags

As a woman of color there is no excuse...Avon & May Kay have tooted Mocha as the foundation for us for eternity. Run down to any shop that sells cosmetics & you'll find tan, bronze and mocha! It didn't play for me either...Vee
ColdGreg
Did anybody bother to watch last night? I decided to do laundry.
Meedis
It was a repeat so I watched the Charlie's Angel Unauthorized cheese-fest movie on NBC instead. I did seek a little bit of sanity from that nutty movie by watching Half & Half a few minutes here and there, despite it being a repeat.
