Glad to see people love the Pretender (flaws and all) and more impotantly Ms Parker.
I know it's old but to clear up the weird cliff hanger ending for the 2nd movie...there was originaly 4 movie scheduled to be filmed to end the series but they only ended up doing 2..due to lack of rating or something...leaving fans with many unanswered question, and no Jarod Ms Parker togetherness *SIGH*

Ooooh, thanks Chantal, that explains so much, I had been wondering what were on those scrolls, and we all know Mr. Parker will be back soon. I just wish we got to see it *insane bitterness*
It was Kyle's heart. Really, that was the only way the writers could ensure he'd stay dead.
Hee Hee! So true!

Hey, what did happen at the very end of that 2nd movie? My VCR cut off about 5 minutes or so before the end (talk about bitterness!!), what was the deal with Raines? Didn't something get resolved with Jarod and Ms. Parker (God, that woman was HOT, almost makes me think about switching teams!) and their paternity? And what are these scrolls? I know it's been a long time (why are their no DVDs of this yet?), but if anyone could refresh my memory, I'd appreciate it!

After Mr. Parker jumped out of the plane, they showed the scroll washed up on shore. The message was basicly that Jarod is the new Christ.

Wow, I didn't even know there was a Pretender thread. To say I was obsessed with it, would be a complete understatement. I lived and breathed this show for three years. It was pretty sad really. In fact, I watched the episode 'The Bank' once a day for the ten days after it screened.
*hangs head in shame* In my defense I was a total MP/J shipper, and that had lots of MP/J goodness in it.
The message was basicly that Jarod is the new Christ.
Dear god. It's
The Matrix all over again. And Buffy. And Angel.
And Alias.
Why do shows always have fucking prophecies everywhere? I mean I can take Angel and Buffy doing that, but The Pretender? Talk about out of the blue. I have a curse that all drama's I watch have prophecies. Not even my beloved Alias is immune.
About Miss Parker, all I have to say is: Best. Bitch. EVER. I loved the episode when she grabbed that guy who was trying to find out who shot Raines, and mouthed off at Raines through the camera.
I didn't mind Thomas, he did humanise her and prevent her from becoming too one note. Plus the MP/J interaction to find his killer was great, especially when Jarod found her all drunk in the bar. God I want the DVD's now.
why are their no DVDs of this yet?
The first two seasons have been released in France. I would link to the French Amazon, but it keeps fucking up for some reason.
I have to say the lamest thing in it's run was the incessant bringing in of brothers and sisters, and long lost other siblings. One brother for Jarod and then his sister was ok. MP getting Lyle as a twin was borderline, but then Ethan was just overkill.
Another trait my favourite TV shows share, magically appearing siblings. First TP, then Buffy and unfortunately now Alias. Maybe I should just stop watching TV to save the shows from jumping the shark...

Omg! big huge "Word" to Sir_Fireboard, all of those stupid siblings that kept popping up, and dragging out questions from the begining, it reached the point where I would audibly sigh whenever MP went on her "Who killed my mother?" eps.
I loved the idea of chasing Jarod, and their quasi-friendship as children, and then the sexual tension that wasn't. I remember watching the movies and being pissed off all day because of those dumb prophecies. If they were going to introduce us to this new, if annoying, plotline, they should have finished it. Frankly, I wouldn't mind too much if they just leaked the next 2 movies main plot points, just to give us diehard fans some closure.
And I can't talk enough about how much I love MP, God! She was the best. Those stellar suits, and heels, and then running around with that gun, it was just the best of both worlds, like high fashion meets 007. Heh heh heh, I've got to go watch reruns now.

Hi y'all.
Just dropped in to say that I just Michael Weiss in a production of the play "Burn This" in Boston.
I'd seen him in "The Pretender" before, but I had no idea what a talented stage actor he is. He kicked ass. He has an amazing stage presence and managed to be scary, funny, touching, and sexy as hell all at the same time.
If the show ever comes to your town and you have the opportunity to see it, I highly recommend it on the strength of his performance alone.

DVDs! We're getting
DVDS!From TVShowsOnDVD.com :
Jarod, a boy genius with a special gift for pretending, was kidnapped and held prisoner by a corporation that used him as a human simulator in their clandestine research. Escaping from The Centre more than 30 years later, Jarod now searches for clues to his true identity and family. He also uses his ability to quickly become an expert at anything to right wrongs and exact revenge on the wicked. All the while, Centre operatives led by Miss Parker work relentlessly to capture Jarod, and return him to the Centre. The Pretender aired for four seasons on NBC from 1996 - 2000. It was followed by two made for TV movies in 2001.
That's the synopsis from Fox's long-anticipated announcement of The Pretender - Season 1 on DVD. Set to arrive on March 15th, it will contain all episodes from the first year: Pilot, Every Picture Tells a Story, Flyer, Curious Jarod, The Paper Clock, To Serve and Protect, A Virus Among Us, Not Even a Mouse, Mirage, Better Part of Valor, Bomb Squad (a.k.a. Potato Head Blues), Prison Story, Bazooka Jarod, Ranger Jarod, Jaroldo!, Under the Reds, Keys, Unhappy Landings, Jarod's Honor, Baby Love, and The Dragon House (double-length season-ender).
In addition, look for two Featurettes and multiple Commentary Tracks as bonus features on this set, which runs around 1100 minutes and will sell for $39.98 SRP. Video is 1.33:1 full frame, and audio is English Dolby Surround, Spanish Dolby Surround, French Dolby Surround. Also look for subtitles in English and Spanish.
Box artwork hasn't been distributed quite yet, but we'll bring that to you just as soon as Fox Home Entertainment makes it available. Please stay tuned!

Heh, I actually hadn't been on the net for a few days, and when I went to check my email and saw I had gotten an email from TVShowsOnDVD about the Pretender, I audibly gasped. That's a pretty good SRP as well.
Hopefully they'll include the movies on the season 4 DVD. It'll be great to hear commentaries, hopefully from the actors as well. How cool would it be to hear Raines or Lyle giving a commentary!?

Sci Fi in UK started showing it again and I realised how much I loved this show, I just wish that they would do one more movie to finish it cos with the number of twists this show had an open ending is just too much to take.
Also, Miss Parker was awesome, they should have given her a show of her own, I know I would have watched it.

Jarod and Miss Parker... the two best reasons to watch any episode of this series! I wish someone would come out with a list of "Parkerisms"... the ones I recall pale in comparison with the reality of the series.
Fav's off the top of my head... From "Toy Surprise"... after Broots offers her a screwdriver when she's asked for a weapon (to smite evil Bridgette) "I want to KILL her, not SCREW her!" A wonderful quote from an ep who's name escapes my memory.... Broots is in the passenger seat when Miss P guns her engine... "Miss Parker, that's a brick wall." Miss P replies with a smile..."And this (car) is a rental!" From "Isle of the Hunted" movie... after Broots as just told her Mr Raines could be her father..."I think I'm going to vomit."

HouseofJudith
Jan 3, 2005 @ 10:44 pm
No, I don't know the source of the Lurch/Uncle Fester quote, but I wonder if its about Angelo and Mr Raines.
As for Miss Parker... no, we never know her name. It was part of the game. Never knew her first name, or Jarod's last name. In fact we never found out Sydney's last name or Broots first name... assuming Broots WAS his last name and not a nickname. Jarod know's Miss P's name, however, since we know she whispered it to him when they were children. Many assume her name begins with a "M" since the initials on one of her christmas ornaments were "M.P." My theory, however, is more mundane. I think her name is "Bertha"... because, well 1) who WOULDN'T keep "Bertha" a secret if it was their name.. and 2) Jarod named an extravagrant fireworks show "The Big Bertha" in season 1 and it made Miss P "roll her eyes" when she heard it. (Flimsey, I know, but so is most of the logic in this show.)
Jarod stopped demanding to "know" his (own) last name after he met his father. I can only HOPE that he was "smart" enough to ask Major Charles what the family surname was before he lost him at the end of season 3. (That was an awesome cliffhanger... Miss Parker bleeding to death from a bullet in the back, and Jarod captured by Mr Lyle et al.
Oops, forgot to add another "Parkerism" I heard this morning in "Bloodlines II". Miss Parker has just been handed a heavy ethical dilemma... and she steps back saying... "I need a drink.... a BIG one." :-)

Actually, Broots didn't have a last name either. As stated upthread, the characters on the show either had a fisrt name or a last name. We were never given a character's full name unless they were dead. (Dr.William Raines doesn't count since he was considered the "walking dead".)

Broots first name was never revealed. Lazlo is actually the character Jon Gries played in

I'm watching Bloodlines right now, and my god this show rocks. I remember it airing originally, but for some reason I can't remeber any of the episodes I've seen so far. It's really strange because I remember liking this show when it was on.
I really hope the DVDs sell well enough to warrant another movie. Even if it's just one to wrap everything up properly. It's probably a slim chance, but its happened before. I wonder if they could get all the actors back.

DVD's selling well probably helped reassure the folks who signed with Whedon to do the big screen version of "Firefly". I'd like more closure than the 2 TNT movies provided. ESPECIALLY if that closure included some actual "facetime" between Jarod and Miss P. They should be safe given the fact that Occey, the blind lady from movie #2 is dead. ;-)

Launchcast is a good thing. It was playing an old hit from Madonna's called Pretender and corny as her song was (it wasn't a hit off her Like a Virgin album), I was just thinking that would've been a kick ass theme song for this show.

Great glorious day in the morning! Today's Pretender on TNT was "Cold Dick", where Broots fantasizes a weekend retreat between him and Miss Parker. :-D Fav line from first half? She wakes up: naked, in bed with Broots...who's also quite naked. She's disputing the obvious implications, and Broots asks "why not?" Her response... "Because pigs aren't flying, Hell hasn't frozen over, and you're NOT the last man on earth!"

Mrs. Parker refered to him as "Mr. Wiggles". I remember distinctly because I was working at Walmart at the time and I kept remembering the image in my head the next day at work and was giggling. My coworker kept asking me what in the world I was giggling about and I couldn't describe it so the next day I brought in the VHS tape and played it in the elecronics department on all of the TV's. She was horrified. I just laughed a lot.
Come to think of it I still have that VHS tape laying around somewhere. I should pull it out and watch it sometime.

I don't know about closure, but the Season 1 DVD will be out in a couple of weeks. I can hardly wait. I think that was my favourite season, too, when he was out in the world and discovering everything while helping all sorts of people. I much preferred it to the later seasons when much greater emphasis was placed on the backstory/mystery which, frankly, ended up strangling itself in all the unlikely and contradictory revelations.
I never really wanted Jarod and Miss Parker to become an item. Just because they were the two mains stars of the show doesn't mean they have to be romantically involved. The highly competitive respect and regard that they had for each other was just right. They were peers. Not every male/female relationship has to be sexual.

Yay, a Pretender thread!
A friend of mine, who I haven't talked to in a while, called me out of the blue a few days to excitedly tell me that she just bought the DVDs. Of course, I immediately head to the nearest mall and purchased one myself.
I'm making my way through them and holy crap, I have forgotten how friggin' good this show was. I don't have TNT so I haven't seen the show since it was cancelled nor have I seen the 2 movies (prophecies? wtf?). Hope they release all the seasons and include the 2 movies.
