Oh total WORD, Pink Mayuri! That's all I could think this whole time. He blamed his mom for everything, not that he's completely wrong since the woman screwed 8 different guys and got pregnant 8 different times at least. I can understand if it was one of those things where he had no idea about any of his kids and died without knowing, but that wasn't the case was it? Asshat.
Tosia
Ok,Marty met his brother from his Bio dad in Germany.

I loved Marty's wide-eyed, surprised look when DP started telling him to get his act together for his own family! Be a mensch like your Dad, Marty!

And since his dad sent child support until Marty was 13! why in God's name didn't Marty contact him sooner? The guy obviously was trying!

Marty seems to be like a guy who wants everything and doesn't want to be accountable for anything. very "who me" passive aggressive.

And I don't trust this family anymore at all because it was presented that they all "play to the camera". Sick.

So, what is the deal with Marty's bio mom's kids--Marty's siblings in U.S. Why is it not important that he contact them and get some familial community that way?
Or are they all whores and low lifes?
El DeMarge
The drinking game you guys have put together is great but I just can't drink at 10:00 in the morning. Carry on...
KimberleeJean
Hey let's start a Dr. Phil support group, for wives who don't mind porn!

Word to your mom. I get irked by DP's sweeping generalizations of "porn is never good." Excuse me, DP, but don't you always tell people never to make sweeping generalizations???? Wait...I just did it twice. Sigh.

Back to the porn; as long as there is a measure of respectfulness in your r'ship this doesn't matter at all. These are things you should work out before you get married/move in together. I am fine with it, I know women who aren't and women who are just "meh." It can't possibly always spell doom for a couple. C'mon Phil, get real.

My contribution to the DP drinking game: every time DP starts a sentence with, "When you get your own talk show..."
SnowDog
Drink every time DP says, "That dog won't hunt."

I'll bet he says porn is never good because Robin is watching. She seems like she'd be uptight about that. Heh, he probably steals porn from the guests.
Pink Mayuri
Hee! I just got my Nutrition Action newsletter and they have a feature article on Phil's diet versus Atkins versus South Beach. Anyway, there's a sidebar on the Dr. Phil supplements, "Dr. Phil's Pills."

Here's the opening piece (fair use, fair use!):

If you hit it right, a popular diet book can be a gold mine.  But the big players know how to dig even deeper.  Dr. Phil -- who at 6'4" and 240 pounds is clearly overweight -- wants fans to pay US$120 for his vitamins and up to US$90 for his bars and drink mixes every month (in Canada, they're only available via the internet).

The article also talks about how his apple pills/pear pills are bullshit and the bars/drinks are made of sugar, fat, oil, fibre and soy protein.
katymo
Hee! Yeah I've noticed Dr. Phil has gained some poundage since last year. What gives DP?
KimberleeJean

I guess he hasn't quite been able to conquer the "Hypocrisy Key."
loudfan
who at 6'4" and 240 pounds

I went to weightwatchers.com and entered DP's height & weight into their BMI calculator:

Your BMI is 29.3
This is above the BMI range of 20-25 which experts generally consider to be healthy. Losing weight would help your health and energy level, plus reduce your risk for disorders such as diabetes and heart disease.
SnowDog
I'm watching the Friday show right now. When the promos said there was a 20-year difference between the mom and her boyfriend, I thought he was the older one. I'll take whatever the mom is using to fend off wrinkles!

DP (standing next to old lady in the audience):  "Now we're 20 years apart.  You don't want to have anything to do with me, do you?"
OLiTA: "Not really."

DP, I don't think that really proves your point. Plenty of people your age don't want to have anything to do with you.

DP (about the woman in love with the gay man):  "There are two reasons why I agreed to do this."

Oh? Robin's twins need some maintenance?

Rap. On Dr. Phil. No... just, no.
Freshly Ground Coffee
Oh. No.
This show has now gone to the dogs. Fat dogs of overweight owners, that is. He actually spent time talking about fat dogs. I..just....words fail me..........
percolata
Yeah Freshly Ground Coffee, I guess he wants to get a little product placement money from IAM's Dog Food to add to his money from the six books, shakes, bars, vitamins, T-shirts, sun glasses, exercise bands and spine cracking work out ball, and wasn't that a blank spiral notebook he was selling today? The kind you get from Big Lots for 25 cents to write your calories in? I guess it makes all the difference if it has DP's name on it.

Today's show was poor quality even for an infomercial. His first weight loss example woman had only managed to stick to his program for 16 out of 27 days and she has DP's and the personal trainer's individual help plus the whole world watching her as an incentive.

How about the woman who was setting off to work with a load of books and her car keys in her hand when evil JJ shows up and makes her walk? She was sweaty and late for her meeting- and DP says "You should have started earlier." Excuse me? She didn't know she was going to be bullied by JJ into a work out not of her own choice. Maybe she had been planning to wrench her neck on that darn ball in the evening.

I'm so fed up with him.
El DeMarge
This Booty Camp thing is really boring. Does this mean no more Real World: Fatties anymore? I liked the whole reality-house-with-confessional-booth series.

And those people with the dog made me sad. If you love your dog, you don't feed her until she explodes, you make sure she's healthy. Not like the dog is going to up and decide to lose weight on her own one day...stupid owners.
Freshly Ground Coffee
El DeMarge , you're right, it was sad about the poor doggie. People should know better.

percolata, I am so disgusted with the franchise that has become Dr. Shill, that I was moved to create a lame entry in the latest Pixel Challenge.

Damn you Dr. Phil!!!!
katymo
Ugh, I was so pissed at that dog owner. I give my dogs human food every now and then, but that was one FAT dog and looked like it hadn't walked more than 10 feet in years.

This brings me to another thing that pisses me off about this show and other talk shows. DP just fucking rewarded these people for neglecting their dog the way they are. He gave them insurance for a year and diet dog food for a year. Yay for the dog that its finally going to get some much needed care, but WTF? That is a slap in the face to people that do the right thing all year round, they don't get shit for free! UGH! He does the same thing to the weight loss people, here's a brand new treadmill for being so lazy all these years and finally getting off your ass! Sorry for the rant, but it really burns me.

I agree the Booty Camp is one boring infommercial. Get back to stuff I care about, hell at this point I'm even hoping for the FUF to return!
SnowDog
Poor Fat Fat. That's one of the most insulting pet names I've heard (like I'm one to talk: sometimes I call my cat Polly PrissyPants [but her real name is Grendal])

The thing that annoys me is that the dog didn't really need diet dog food, it just needed to be fed less and exercised more. Seriously, people, just don't feed your dog so much!
Princess Tanella
Wow. It bothered me that everyone was treating the fat dog issue like it was a big joke. The owners, the audience, Dr. Phil, all just chuckling away. It was sad.

Booty Camp is boring. I cannot listen to people who have been following a diet for three or four weeks talk about what a lifestyle change they have made. Furthermore, I can't listen to Dr. Phil praise himself for "inventing" the lifestyle change philosophy of weight loss and accuse others of stealing it from him.
percolata
I'm not going to listen to anyone talk about diet or "lifestyle change" until they can prove that their plan beats the universal statistics of 95% re-gain after two years, with 90% re-gaining all that they've lost plus more.

Way back when Dr. Phil still had scruples, he had three obese women on the show who disagreed with him and he actually let them say a few words. One woman said she had gained all her two hundred excess pounds during rebounds from diets - she said she would never diet again because she couldn't afford to gain anymore weight. It was a light bulb moment for me.
El DeMarge
He does the same thing to the weight loss people, here's a brand new treadmill for being so lazy all these years and finally getting off your ass!

Hah! Speak it, Kaytmo!

The most annoying thing about Booty Camp for me is when the nutritionist goes to their house and goes through their cupboards, pulling out boxes of Bugles and bags of chips and the Weight Loss People are like, "Whaaaa???? Those are bad??? You're throwing them away????". They just act so shocked that their bad eating habits could possibly be contributing to them not being able to lose weight.

No, you can't eat Doritos anymore. Sorry to shock the hell out of you.
percolata
They probably stage the whole thing so that pointless, evil JJ (Just Jerkin-off?) will have something to do. I noticed the way she froze the grapes so that they would "take longer to eat" and thus be "high response cost low calorie per mile blah blah yada" and then in the next breath said "now here's a really fast way to make chicken breasts." I hate her. I know that half man, Ann Coulter look alike type. She's a tall lean ectomorph with low estrogen levels, she won't have any trouble with her weight until she's in her fifties and then it will just be some upper body fat. If she touches my Bugles, I'll take away her mustache bleach.
El DeMarge
I could probably finish off those grapes in 20 minutes.
Cookie Mobster
I hated watching the last show if only because it squicks me out to hear Dr. Phil say "booty".

I know he has his plan and all that, but it's hyped way too much. I wonder if he will ever do a show on competing diets. I would love a little balance, because not everyone who ever lost weight did it because of the one-and-only-almighty-Dr. Phil-plan.
loudfan
I enjoy the shows with the Ultimate Weight Loss Challenge teams, but from now on, I'm not going to bother with the Booty Camp shows. I fast-forwarded through most of yesterday's (I did want to see the segment with the poor overweight dog) after being totally disgusted by DP criticizing the poor woman who had "only" lost seven pounds over the holidays because she ate her mom's cooking. He even had the audience BOO her, for pity's sake! I did Weight Watchers all of last year and you can bet that during the week I visited my parents, I ate everything my mom cooked for me. So you gain 2-3 pounds, big deal -- it's easy enough to go back on the low-Points regimen and work it off when you get home. The woman lost weight over Christmas, I don't think she deserves harsh words, only congratulations.
SnowDog
Princess Tanella:
Furthermore, I can't listen to Dr. Phil praise himself for "inventing" the lifestyle change philosophy of weight loss and accuse others of stealing it from him.

I've joined Weight Watchers off and on over the past several years. The leader emphasized in all the meetings that the program is a lifestyle change, not just a diet. It ticks me off when DP bad-mouths Weight Watchers, since they've helped millions more than DP ever will.

loudfan:
I fast-forwarded through most of yesterday's after being totally disgusted by DP criticizing the poor woman who had "only" lost seven pounds over the holidays because she ate her mom's cooking.

No doubt! I would love to drop 7 pounds. Think how much butter that is.

Oh man. I'm watching the addict episode now. The son who held his head in "pain" as he asked, "Is that an allergy pill... OR A VICADON???" What is this, a PSA?
katymo
I was watching Oprah today and I NEVER do, and apparently some time soon they're going to have a show on "Soccer moms: Not your typical addicts" too! I'm not sure who is copying who (though I have a good guess), but I don't like this whole incestuous recycling of stories.

Yeah it really bugged me that DP was ragging on other weight loss plans, you didn't invent anything you asshole.
masked_spangler
Did anyone else want to smack their tv when Dr. Phil said "Cause I can be a powerful ally, but you'd better not lie to me." Or what? You'll send your creepy mafia wife after them? You'll help them, but if they piss you off, that's it, you leave them in the gutter to die? You are not entirely "all that" you smug, arrogant...

Sorry. Life Strategies was an excellent book and I still quote those life laws of his, so I owe him for that. But this whole "I am the supreme master of the universe" act on the talk show is kinda annoying.
BibiBella
But this whole "I am the supreme master of the universe" act on the talk show is kinda annoying.

Mega-word to that. I can hardly stand to watch his show anymore - his "I am the master of the universe" bearing and persona is just too much anymore - I think the weight loss group show (midway through) is what did it for me. Too bad, he used to be sooo good when he was on Oprah, but as others have said, he no longer gets real with folks, just acts like he's God with all the answers (and Robin is Mrs. God, and Jay is Junior God and they too have all the answers - you can just call the McGraws "the God Family").

I just wonder how long it will take before HE takes a fall from his very-high perch.
LisaLyn27
Yeah, I don't think I can stand anymore of the diet stuff on Dr. Phil. As you guys have said, he didn't invent the 'lifestyle change' aspect of dieting. That's been around for a long time and it's been getting to be a very popular theory lately. He really doesn't have any proof that his plan is any better than any others. Yeah, people are loosing weight on it, but you can loose weight on just about anything. The challenge is actually getting to your goal and keeping it off.

As Percolata said, until we're 2 years down the line and see if more than 5% have kept the weight off, it's meaningless. And I think it's pretty unethical for him to bad-mouth other diet programs that have worked for others. If you really care about people, who cares if they loose the weight on your plan or somebody else's? Oh, yeah, Phil cares b/c if they're not loosing on his plan, he's not making money off of it.
Alexa
I saw the crappy booty camp episode as well. Can't stand all of his references to "booty" camp. Made me gag for some reason. Also hated how he makes everyone wear that stupid T-shirt. So, the whole audience is overweight and needs to go on his booty camp? Doubt it. I would think there were some people there that did not need to lose any weight.

I agree with those that are annoyed that he thinks he invented the whole weight loss idea. Sorry, Dr. Phil, but the concepts of weight loss have been out there a long time, and many people have lost weight before your products existed.

Also thought it was bad that the woman that lost 7 pounds in that amount of time was a failure. Huh? Even if people diet perfectly, for some people it takes longer for the pounds to come off.

If his diet plan is so great, why does his friend Oprah have Bob Greene on her show when she is discussing weight loss and not have Dr. Phil instead? Answer: because she prefers to have someone that is educated in the subject (I believe Bob is an exercise physiologist?)
percolata
Today: Mrs. Master of the Universe tells us all about having babies and refers to DP as "Philip." snort

Have you ever noticed? When Robin tries to smile her mouth forms an oval and she looks just like one of thoses blow-up dolls.

[ Note to self: The wise TWoPers speak well of Weight Watchers - give them a try.]
Tosia
Oh Percolata, the blow-up doll lips on Robin?
Whoa, Dude, so true! I can see it totally.

Word to all who think Lord God King Dr. Shill is going too far these days. What a megalomaniac! He invented the life style change diet?

Yeah, right, just like Al Gore invented the internet.

I can't stand him or his God family anymore. How did he go so far so fast to being hated?

The weight loss shows without long range proof.

Giving away expensive crap such as exercise machines and personal trainers to the weight loss participants? What, the diet and their own exercise plans not enough to prove his diet works? No, of course not.

The weight loss products' shill.

His own hefty body.

The infomercial shows praising the God King himself.

The God family (lack of anything, except being related to Dr.Shill) being touted as "experts" on stage, while the real experts sit int he audience and speak from there.

The FUF family not showing positive results. Please, just neuter them all so they don't procreate and dump 'em.
stinkylulu

Money and power -- it does funny things to folks and it seems that once Dr. Phil started getting a taste of it (yes, he was very successful pre-Oprah and pre-his own show, but not like this with the mega-money and famous friends), he started gorging like he was at an all-you-can-eat restaurant.

Speaking of food, I saw a photo of Dr. Phil somewhere recently -- without his suit jacket on -- and the dude has gotten rather thick (or maybe he always was but you couldn't see it with a jacket on) in the middle -- spare tire land, if you ask me!

P.S. I read somewhere also that the minute the show taping ends, Robin takes over Dr. Phil like nobody's business -- that she is the one who rules the roost and he jumps when she commands....
Elrhino

This is what I can't stand about the weight loss challenge (and for the most part, I think its a good thing ... afterall, we are a country of fat asses).

Everyone's metabolism and biology is different. That's why Dr. Phil is taking these contestants to get constant lab and blood work done at Quest (which is expensive, normally reserved for professional athletes). So he picks 14 challengers (or how ever many) who are predisposed to lose weight quickly (and notice how when they become "mentors" and pick apprentices that the show has no control over, Phill breaks the news that some people's bodies are proned to fight weight loss). So, these people lose an ungodly amount of weight in a short period of time, and Dr. Phil talks about how they have been "getting real" about their weight. Shame on you if you haven't had the same results. "Now, if you haven't lost 86 pounds in 3 months .. .here's my new meal supplement bar"

And never mind the fact that many people question whether its even healthy to lose that much weight in a short period of time. Toxins and other carcinogens are stored in your fat cells. Some people believe when you lose all that fat you release all of those toxins into your blood at once. Most doctors say weight loss should be gradual, and you shouldn't lose more than a couple of pounds a week.
El DeMarge
Was anyone else squicked out by the sex-addict lady when she held up a tiny thong in that video montage? Ew.
I missed today's ep. How many products got placed during Robin's Surprise Nursery bit?
borokat
I have to admit, I liked the nursery- but I will give the credit to the designers, and not Dr. Robin. The colors that they used are the same that I am using for my nursery- which I am starting on this weekend. So I got some good ideas.

But- they did cram a whole lot of crap into that tiny room, though.
loudfan
And never mind the fact that many people question whether its even healthy to lose that much weight in a short period of time.

Totally. In fact, most diet experts suggest that when you start a weight loss program, your goal should be to lose 10% of your body weight, and NOT to get down to a size 6 or whatever. Obviously when you reach the 10% goal, you can keep going if you want to, but it's unrealistic for most people to expect to go from 250 lbs. to 125. Losing 10% of your body weight has great health benefits and in no way constitutes a failure just 'cause you're not as thin as, say, Robin.

I wish DP had done an entire hour about plateaus instead of sticking it at the end of yet another hour of self-congratulation. It is SO frustrating to be doing "all the right things" and yet the scale doesn't budge!
MetropolisGal
Dr. Phil gave some baaad advice to that woman who was disappointed that the baby she's carrying is a girl. I'm sorry, but that woman has some serious issues. I mean, she's so upset that the baby is a girl that she's had amnio THREE times to see if it wasn't "a mistake". I get the feeling she's one of those women who might actually harm the baby because it wasn't a boy. Her reaction went beyond mere disappointment, and telling her that she'll feel differently when she holds the baby for the first time was more than a little naive.
Maybelline
Pregnant couple number one: I don't know who I hated more; the husband, who acted like a 12 year old about the birthing process ("things just aren't supposed to come out of there!") or the wife, who must have know what kind of person he was before she married him. I don't think every man has to be in the delivery room; that's a decision for the couple to make. But if I told my husband that I needed and wanted him there, and he made some smart-ass remark about how he allowed me to quit my job, and now he's paying the bills, so I should let him do what he wants...I would be regretting ever marrying such an immature jerk.

Couple number two: That woman, who was refusing to believe she was having a third girl, needed a hard smack. There are a lot of women, myself included, who want children and can't have them. And she is acting like having a child is like ordering takeout: you get to choose from a menu of options, and you get what you want. I must say that I liked the way Dr. Phil handled her: his statement that her little girl, out of a million little girls, was meant to be hers, was truly profound. It melted my heart there for a minute.

Finally, the "Dr. Phil Pregnancy Couple": Gee, do you think they could have found a more bland, typical yuppie couple than Morgan and Shannon? I got absolutely nothing out of that heart-to-heart chat between Robin and Shannon (or is she Morgan? even their names are forgettable). I don't know why Dr. Phil couldn't hire a child-proofing expert rather than giving Robin more airtime. And those precious McGraw family home movies? Strangely un-cute. Not funny or endearing or sweet at all. Just weird.

The nursery remodel irked me 'cause I couldn't help but think of all the underpriveleged families who could have used new nursery furniture, while Mr. and Mrs. Blandy McBland obviously have a whole McMansion full of furniture; they can buy their own damn Pottery Barn Kids stuff. Give me a break.
royvac
I just started to watch my tape of this and I had to laugh when Phil says "Home movies never before seen". My immediate thought was why haven't Robin and Phil watched their home movies?
katymo
Dr. Phil gave some baaad advice to that woman who was disappointed that the baby she's carrying is a girl. I'm sorry, but that woman has some serious issues.

A complete and total WORD to this. The lady freaked me out. I'm a bit young to have kids yet (IMO) and am not even dating anyone, but someday I want a baby and I'd be thrilled no matter what the sex was. It is one thing to go aww shoot I was kind of hoping for a little boy or little girl, but to go on Dr. Phil about it is just plain evil. I did like what DP said to her about the meant to be hers thing too. Aww.

The husband in the first couple was a complete asshole. Just get the divorce now and save yourself a few years!
royvac
The woman who wanted a boy was very disturbing. She said she was afraid that she would compare because her daughter was the cutest best girl in the world. My first thought was how does she treat her husbands daughter? I would have loved it if Phil had asked her or her husband that question.
I've known couples who have a preference (very few) but they accept and move on. There first hope is always for a healthy baby. I was under the impression that ultra sound is not 100% accurate. I'm sure that after three it's pretty certain but there is still an off chance.
Maybelline
One more for the Dr. Phil drinking game:

Take a swig every time Dr. Phil makes a crack about women having a "long memory."
Hexele
I was under the impression that ultra sound is not 100% accurate.

It's pretty accurate when you can see it's a boy, less so when it may be a girl. Someone could probably explain this better than I.....when you can see an obvious penis, it's accurate. (My ultrasound tech actually captioned the picture "penis ----> " for my husband -- she was a fun lady. I can attest to the accuracy since my little boy of two months is sitting on my lap while I type one handed.
yard_stick
I didn't think the Dr. Phil's Amateur Hour could sink much lower than it already has, but....... the show managed to do just that today -- at least in my opinion! Now Robin's an expert on babies, decorating and a star of old home movies. Heee!! WORD!
yard_stick
Edited because of repeat post.
Sock Puppet
I have to admit, I liked the nursery- but I will give the credit to the designers, and not Dr. Robin.

Word! I like how the interior designers were just mentioned in passing, like yeah, they may have had something to do with it, but EVERYONE LOOK AT ROBIN AND HER IMMOVABLE FACE! She gets to be princess for another day, as if she put that whole room together. It's like thanking Paige Davis for a Vern Yip room.
borokat
I also hated that first guy from the pregnancy show- what a jackass. I am consistently amazed at the people that will go on this show and admit to totally despicable behavior- and not even be embarrassed about it. When we have this baby in May, Mr. Borokat will be right by my side- and has never made one peep about it! I loved his whole excuse of how he would rather be in the waiting room trading stocks and being productive. What a fucking loser. I feel sorry for the child.

The second woman- creepy. I could see her turning into a Marty and telling the poor daughter that she likes her older sister better. Where do they find these people?

Morgan and Shannon? Meh. Although I did detect a little annoyance in the wife (Morgan? Shannon?) when Dr. Robin was spoutung off about something or other. And was it just me or did no one look happy in those home videos? It just all seemed very tense and forced.
Hexele
The second woman- creepy. I could see her turning into a Marty and telling the poor daughter that she likes her older sister better. Where do they find these people?

borokat! AHA! DP is fishing for the next generation of FUFs. He's stockpiling tape so that when this kid comes on the show 12 years from now he can point back to this. ewww.
percolata
Calling all teenage girls who are feeling lonely, insecure and unpopular!

Find a boy and get pregnant!

You'll have a darling little baby to cuddle and love.

School? No problemo! A nice group of older ladies will care for your baby while you're in class and it wont cost you a penny.

No friends? You'll soon be part of a close fun loving in-crowd of your own consisting of all the other young mommys at school.

Saturday night? Your own parents will be glad to babysit, of course.

Food? Shelter? Don't concern your little head with this. You'll still have their comfy home to live in - all mortgage payments and groceries taken care of by that good old Dad who didn't "take an active enough part" in your life. The big meany!

Boys? Well they're still calling Alexandria for dates aren't they? I wouldn't be surprised if she's even more popular with boys now!

Last of all, your self esteem will soar as you listen to everyone on the planet praise you for being such a good sacrificing little mommy. Sigh. I love a good cautionary tale.
