Less than 5 days until the final season of Soul Food....too bad I don't have Showtime...if only them Paramount idiots would release the other seasons on DVD. They're spitting out Sex & The City faster than you can say "f***" but can't even get the 2nd season out on DVD for SF. Sad, sad, sad.

Tonight's the Night!!!
this is what TVTome (www.tvtome.com) has to say about the upcoming season...Spoilers used just in case anyone doesn't want to know anything about what's going to happen:
In last season's shocking finale, Teri and Damon's tumultuous engagement and relationship dramatically ended. The heartbroken, divorced career woman is left to wonder where, again, had she gone wrong. While Lem and Bird's marriage continued to be strong, they rode out some tough challenges, including an unplanned pregnancy and Bird's stalker. Maxine and Kenny repaired their relationship while dealing with the issues of their developing children. For the collective clan, familial bonds were strengthened despite adversity. The final season will test all of those bonds -- not just the bonds between husbands and wives but the previously unshakable ones between the three sisters.
Season five opens with two of the men in the family in trouble. Both Ahmad and Lem have confrontations with the law - but, as it turns out, neither of them is at fault. In Lem's case, his past, and the company he keeps, lead him into yet another situation in which his decisions are questioned. Ahmad clashes with his father (Kenny) as he goes through the kind of growing pains any family with a teen-ager can expect, and Kenny's business falls on hard times. At first, the Joseph women seem to be on point. Teri grieves the end of her relationship with Damon but doesn't waste much time getting back into the swing of things, so to speak. Maxine takes a new job and finds herself in a new situation - with an attraction to another man. And there are things brewing for Bird and Lem again this season when she must decide whether to trust her husband, who's lied to her before.
In typical "Soul Food" style, look for guest celebrity appearances by football player-actor-turned-activist Jim Brown, actors Hill Harper, Mario Van Peebles, Vondie Curtis-Hall and former BET host Laz Alonso. Diahann Carroll and Michael Warren return as Aunt Ruthie and Baron Marks.

Well I'm not good at giving synops...but here goes.
Ahmad got arrested for allegedly stealing an elderly white woman's purse. He accidentally knocked her over on his way to school (he was late so he running) Hauled in by police and interoggated. Put in a holding cell for hours. Very negative affect on him (as expected). Police later learn that the lady had left her purse at the store she was leaving. However the police bring him in anyway and begin asking him questions about other possible crimes. Kenny cuts this "bullshit" short and takes Ahmad out of there.
Teri has a one night stand with a former client (or so she thought), Eric, of her firm. BTW it's been 8 weeks since Damon has left. She later learns that Eric is not leaving the firm and is staying after all. One of Teri's male co-worker's congrats her on keeping him and wants to know how she did it. Teri is miffed and wants to know why Eric didn't tell her he was staying. Later on same co-worker comes in and tells her he knows she slept with Eric and that's why he staying with the firm. Gives her a bit about how that could grounds for firing. She hits back about many many of the male attorney's at the firm "bending their interns over their desk and no one gives a hoot." However, she denies that she slept with Eric. Later Eric drops by the office to see Teri. She lights into him about running his mouth and informs him that she didn't sleep with him to keep him with the firm. Eric tells her that's not why he's staying. He's staying because he realizes this is the best firm for his company. She doesn't believe him and keeps lightening into him. Finally he says: "The sex wasn't that good" Teri's speechless for a second before telling him to get out.
Lem is cooling with his son when he's approached by a FBI agent (played by football legend Jim Brown). The agent wants him to rat on Mr. B (I forget his name, but it's the character played by Michael Warren) for murder among other things. If you remember from last season when Lem, Mr. B and another character were reaching for guns at the same time...well we definitely know now that the other character was killed. Lem refuse at first but finally relents when Jim Brown tells him that if he doesn't he'll pen the murder on him.
I know I've left out some parts and I know I need to spell check, but I'm starting to ramble and my hands are tired.
Hope this helps you out some.

The show was great last night. The profiling scenario was completely believable. Good acting by the young man that plays Ahmaad and Kenny (sorry don't know actor names). When he was listening to DMX on the headphones I was right there with him. Before I go into meetings I listen to a little Biggie or Nas to get in the right mindframe.
The whole situation with Lem and Bird was a bit melodramatic IMHO.
Overall great episode.

Yes it was a good ep. last night. I was caught totally off guard when the Michael Warren character started beating that woman. I do wish they had actually showed Ahmad knocking over the elderly woman. It would have added a little to the story.
Weird watching Jim Brown play a FBI agent.

Weird watching Jim Brown play a FBI agent.
Considering his law troubles, I presume.
Thanks
Frogbone72 for the synopsis of the episode. I can totally picture Teri's reaction when told "The sex wasn't that great." Sounds like a winner.
So did Maxine do much this episode?
Frogbone72
Feb 26, 2004 @ 4:06 pm
Yes, considering his problems with the law.
Maxine had more of a supporting role in this episode. Support for Ahmad and support for Teri in dealing with her breakup from Damon (One funny part was when Max and Teri were at a little diner and Max was trying to cheer her up over the breakup. Max pointed out that there were alot of memories at the diner. She told Teri that she remembered the first time she saw Kenny "he was sitting in that booth over there." Teri replied: "Of course I remember because I was sitting right next to him" which just further reminded her of her lost in love. Sad, but funny.

I was wondering if Terri would be pregnant considering all she was eating last night. And she looks a little heavier. I was wondering if maybe she got pregnant by Damon before ha broke out.

Wouldn't it be funny if Teri winds up pregnant by Eric? I can just see her rolling her eyes over on that one. But before yall kill me, if they do go the pregnancy route with her, hopefully it'll be Damon's.
Ha! on the diner memories.

Well based on the previews for next week's show Terri doesn't stop at Eric. So if there is a pregnancy story line we might have a little "3 Men and a Baby" going on.

Frogbone72 Biggie= Ten Crack Commandments...the opening line just does it "I been in the game for years..." Nas= The World is Mine or I Know I Can...depending on what the meeting is about.

Maybe Teri's eating is a lead-in to their addressing depression in African-American women and the way it manifests itself. I think they're gonna go the pregnancy route but I guess it depends on whether they're leaning towards soap opera dramatic or Essence Mag informative.

Ugh. Please PTB don't let Teri be pregnant. I want to see her happy, but not with child. Oh, and since I'm making requests, no Teri/Damon reunion either (unless he seriously got his shit together since we last saw him!). I've had enough of sadTeri/anxietyTeri, let the woman be happy in the final season.
The episode was just okay for me, but I know it’s because I hate the character Lem and the actor (Darren?) as well. He just feels so fake to me that I can't take him seriously.

I think what upset me the most about Ahmad's situation was that the cops didn't even bother to hide the fact that they were a pair of racist pricks--they were just so "in-your-face" and smug about it.
I'm guessing Teri's stuffing herself because she's depressed. I really hope she's not going to start sleeping around. And I DON'T want to see her and Damon reconcile, she deserves much better.

Brian is Teri's lawyer "friend" (I use that term loosely) from college who was her study buddy and then they worked at the same firm. He messed around with a subordinate in one Season 1 episode and made said subordinate find another job when caught in the act. Him. Remember now? :-)

Totally forgot the new season started and lucked up on catching a rerun of the season premiere. Loved the opening montage - was that Donny Hathaway?
Didn't love Lem or Terri's storylines. Can Lem ever NOT be in some kind of ethical quandry? Can Terri ever NOT be battling her emotions and dealing w/the professional fallout of said emotions? Ugh, leave those two alone already.
I was half-heartedly hoping that Terri's secret shag-buddy was Myles. Not for any plot worthy reason, though, but just because I heart Isaiah Washington.

I'm calling a Lem/Teri hookup before the end. I've always thought they were leaning that route and they just might go all out before all is said & done.
I *loved* the ep. especially since I'm like in *love* with all things Donny Hathaway. I also like the cinematography of the show and think it's just beautifully presented.
I also like the way Maxine is presented as a character. In that she's a woman, a mother, but she also works and is very much an individual but is woman enough to step back at times and let her husband be "the man of the house" without feeling controlled or threatened. I adore how they work through their problems and are strong where the other is percieved to be weak. That speaks to love, compassion, adoration, and endurance. It's sad that relationships like that aren't highlighted on tv the way they used to be IMO.
I also *adore* Teri. Nicole Parker just shines with everything she's given. That role is so complex, multi-layered and dynamic and she never drops the ball. I wonder since this is the last season will Maxine find out about she & Kenny's little hush-hush tryst.
Brian's a cutie. I'm glad to hear he'll be back. I always thought he & Teri had good chemistry.
I like Lem growing into a family man. Darren Henson won't win any awards, but he has shown some growth in the part over the years. I'm wondering if it'll turn out that Baron is actually his father after all. Bird tends to irritate me but Malinda is tolerable when she's not being overly clingy and strident.
And since this is the last season, I need Brian, Myles, Damon, and Lem's Mom (cause I *love* Debbi Morgan) back for at least a few episodes each.
I'm gonna miss the show when it's gone.

Well she's already nailed Kenny and Teri's *always* shown to have an extremely strong relationship with Lem both positively & negatively IMO. They're each other's harshest critics and are quick to diss each other but they're also each other's biggest defenders and quick to fiercely protect each other. I've always seen them as perfect for each other, either simply as just family, or something more.
Last night's ep was one of the best I think the show has *ever* produced though IMO. Each character was spotlighted but the main show was *all* about The Joseph Sisters.
The three way argument between Maxine/Teri/Bird was just loaded but hella funny at the same time. It reminded me of how my sisters & I deal with each other the majority of the time. I also like that none of 3 took sides and each one was sniping and adding their 2 cents in about the other two.
I also liked Vernee Johnson last night. I have ever since "Welcome Back Kotter". I liked how they didn't go the stereotypical route and have her creepily obssessed with Kelly and actually made her a genuinely good & devoted teacher. Although I also liked that things weren't necessarily resolved between she & Max.
I love Gloria. She won me over when she fought with the office assistant over the music a season or 2 ago. You could totally tell she wanted to tell Teri to "Get the hell over it" but was scared in the coffee shop.

So does this mean that Bird will hook-up with a woman? I'm not particular interested in seeing her explore her Sapphic leanings, but the way the writers threw that in and let it evaporate into a buncha nothing was tired.

As usual, a good show tonight. I didn't think the FBI SL would end so quickly and easily as it did (though I'm sure it'll come back in some way). Jim Brown was playing his role. As was Hill Harper. Though I did have a hard time seeing him as Kenny's brother.
Ahmaad's story was cute. It was funny when he called his white classmate, "soul sister #1".
I hope that the arrival of Damon's mother will finally snap Terri out of her heartbroken funk. I know it's right to deal with the affects of the break up, but I'm ready for a different SL concerning her.

I thought that was
the guy Bird is flirting with in the promos they showed for the season? I think he offers her some chapagne in the scene. It was nice to hear some Mos Def during the opening/closing.
I love Hill, but the hair has GOT to GO! It was all kinds of distracting.
Whatever happened to the club they used to go to, to hear live music and dance at? I miss that place.

This season is really off the hook. The writing, the acting, everything.
I absolutely adore Hill Harper (and think he's a *major* cutie) so I was really in heaven tonight. And anytime they give Kenny some internal family angst I'm always happy because it gives Rockmond a chance to show some range (which he has but doesn't always get to display). I liked the issue with his Mother and I really liked Ahmad's attempt to be selfless assiting Kenny to make his own choice and help his mother in the end.
Jim Brown is like the coolest.man.ever. He's seriously like the prototype for Samuel L. Jackson (aka the.second.coolest.man.ever.). He just radiates this air of badass untouchablity that I'm just in love with. Like Frogbone I like how they're wrapping this storyline up quickly (for now at least).
Poor Teri. She's got everything in the world (money, beauty, grear career, beautiful house, great car). But the woman just can't seem to get it right in the love department, poor thing. It's partially her fault (her own issues) and partially her choice in men that's to blame. She's right in deciding she needs to be single for now though. I'm proud of her for being strong, mature & decisive there.
Next week definitely looks good for Maxine. I'm like Bird, if my boss looked like that I'd be working all the overtime I could too! Hee!
Frogbone I don't know, I just love Y&R and I really like Soul Food. I just tend to be into certain shows at times (I know it shows at times LOL).

I think Hill's hair may be that way because of the roll he's been playing on that CBS series. He's always undercover so he has to look scraggly.
Whatever happened to the club they used to go to, to hear live music and dance at? I miss that place.
I was thinking the same thing. Meant to point it out earlier. Thanks for bringing it up.
I really think the show will heat up when the creeping starts up (or maybe I just like creeping. HeeHeeHee).
I really like the guest stars that they bring on. In a strange or different sense it's like when I now watch reruns of Good Times and Sanford & Son and I see these now great/famous actors just starting out like Debbie Allen, Lou Gossett, Ron Glass, Debbie Morgan, Phillip Michael Thomas...well, maybe not him, but you get my point.

Hey Frogbone I think we may not keep conversation going all week like they do on other boards because it's really not necessary to dissect SF the way you would other shows or maybe the people who enjoy the show don't see the need to dissect. I'd love it if we'd start a real dialog on some of things we've seen and how it relates to us--but always going back to topic [ducking TWOP cops]. For example I don't think Ahmaad should have apologized to the private school girl and I think he had every right to be angry. Granted when something like that happens you feel a weird different-ness, but that doesn't necessarily mean it's just your trip.

I understand what you're saying Adgirl7. I wasn't looking for a response every minute on the minute, but I wasn't looking for days to go by without something. And more importantly, I thought there would be more people involved on this board than the handfull we have now. I know it's showtime, but...
I have to disagree with you on Ahmaad apologizing. I'm not saying that he had no right to be angry or to take it out on her to a degree, but I saw her more as a messenger of her father's thoughts/actions not a follower. True she could have said she was against her pop and was challenging him on his views, but I guess I'll give her a slight pass because of her age.
And I believe there was some truth to her telling Ahmaad that they had more in common than he did with some of the students at the school they were exchanged to. The commonality may have been with the practices and rules of the private school they attend, not the people or beliefs they may hold.

ITA. I think Ahmaad going to learn about duality earlier than a lot of others do. Too bad we won't get to see him deciding about colleges. After his experience with some of the kids at the exchange school, I could see him wanting to go to an HBCU.
