Geez I guess my last topic expired, so I thought I'd start a new one, as the show begins this month on CC: I am eagerly awaiting this show. My friends in the UK, are counting on me to give expert recaps of the show.
Anyways, to start things off:
a story i read at my good friend Resident Brit's site:
At a recent Comedy Central party which Graham attended, an agent from AOL (who had just signed a tentative deal for $1 Million to sponsor Graham's show) went up all excitedly to Graham and said "So, you'll be using AOL on the show, that's great! We're so excited! What kind of webpages do you usually visit during the programme?" To which Graham replies "Oh, all kinds of stuff, gay porn, fetish sites, things like that!" The agent's face falls a mile and Graham realises what he has done and says "I just ruined your deal didn't I?" to which the agent replied politely "No, not at all." The next thing which happens, AOL drop the deal!!

Early on, I was smitten with his UK show on Channel Four. I especially loved 1) the time he had Sophia Lauren speak with a sex line operator through the dog phone and 2) his obsession with that b-movie actor Miles...something.
Having seen a couple episodes of the show he's now doing in NY for the UK, his comedy's seems a little flat. At least the beginning monologue anyway. He tries to talk about Bush and other political going ons stateside, but a lot of it just comes off as ignorant and too simplistic, especially in comparison to CC's Jon Stewart. It'll be interesting to see where he focuses his american show.
edited to add: O'Keefe! That's it. Thanks iMiss Ethan. I heard Graham's contract with Channel Four was up when the show wrapped this spring, so the CC show is likely independent of what they had. Brits will probably need to petition their networks to get him back on the telly.

Miles O'Keefe - Tarzan to Bo Derek's Jane.
Is the show being shown in the UK now the same one we'll be getting shortly in the states? I just signed up to see the show live, and there were only four or five tape dates listed.

No they are close to it, but not the same. nutshell version.
Graham's contract with C4 ran out in April. Noone knew what his plans were. Graham then signed a deal with Comedy Central. BBCA got upset and then they stopped showing new episodes and eventually phased him out. Then he signed with the BBC ANYHOW, he was supposed to finish up his contract with C4 by doing one last season of V (daily show). I guess he changed his mind, (and as he was already coming this summer to film shows in NYC), He decided to abandon V and shoot 10 shows in NYC that were only available to the Brits. The 13 shows shot in NYC for CC will only be seen here.
Hope that helps.

Sort of, except for the fact that it's been much longer than since April that he hasn't been on BBC America.
I just hope he won't choose one subject to joke about in every monologue of the series. It wasn't funny with Catherine Zeta Jones, and it won't be funny with Paris Hilton, JLo, or whomever he would choose now.

Has there been any word on who the first guests will be?

Judging from the old UK clips that they've included in the intro show, I think the comedy central show will still be able to capture all the giddiness and show quite a lot too. The blurring may actually be a good thing.

I'd be interested to know what people who never watched Graham before thought of the "introduction" show.
I figured there'd at least be some narration, or brief history of the show, or interview with Graham, or something. I don't know if those unfamiliar with him were really able to get a sense of what the show is like from that mishmash of clips.
I'm so looking forward to the shows being a full hour now.

I missed the intro special, as I was out. My mom was going to tape it, but the signal was all fuzzy, and it wasn't worth it? How was it? Did they show any unseen clips?
btw, they are putting out An american DVD finally featuring some unaired eps, including one with Ozzy and Sharon.

I loved the intro show. I'm glad I watched it -- if I had only seen his TDS interview and not the intro show, I don't think I would be tuning in this Thursday.

Saw the intro show and laughed and laughed and laughed.... Of course, I'm pre-disposed to British-humor-type-people anyway since I was exposed to Are You Being Served at a very young age and have religiously watched Red Dwarf, Keeping Up Appearances and, most recently, Coupling (all thanks to my local PBS station). My roommate, who is VERY Midwestern, thought Graham was disgusting.
I'd never seen Graham before, but heard good things from a friend who is lucky enough to have BBCAmerica (or is that unlucky enough?). Now I plan to tune in Thursday to see if the American version is as good.

Caught the intro show and thought it was a hoot. I have never seen the show but I always like Graham on the shows he guests as. Even the recent TDS. It wasn't great, but Norton is like an awkward puppy in situations like those. Slightly exasperating but can still bring a smile.

I hope he does the 'Stand Up - Sit Down' game from his earlier shows on BBC. Once he switched to using the pre-written cards on the back of their chairs it lost something.

just a little note : I do not want to be picky but i just wanted to clear something up. Graham's show was not on the BBC but rather on Channel 4, which is sort of a less conservative network, so he could be more raunchy and have people from eithe network (ITV and BBC) ON. Now that he has finished with Channel 4, He has a new show coming up on the BBC
eta: Sorry posttoastie:) Everything is cool!
I will definitely try and see the Graham Norton Special tonight.

I loves me some Graham Norton!
There's a cool interview
here.
My favorite bits?
TVGO: Which one is your least fave?
Norton: I don't mind Queer Eye. Mind you, I don't know why it requires five gay men. One of them could do it all! Any gay man knows how to cook a bit, clean a bit and how to shave.
TVGO: Except maybe Jai Rodriguez, who's useless, especially when he tutors straight guys on interpersonal skills.
Norton: Poor little Jai. We're glad he's there — he's cute. But if I was a straight person, he would annoy me. He treats them like they're so stupid. They're only heterosexual; they're not mentally retarded. He says things like "When your mother meets your girlfriend, make sure you introduce them and they talk to each other." Well, yeah, of course! It's not like there's anything wrong with these men's brains just because they're heterosexual. They haven't just been beamed in from another planet.

So I caught the first episode, it was a bit of mixed bag. Never seen Graham's BBC show but I've heard a lot of him. He's definitely funny in that quirky, sometimes burlesque humor, but other times I think he's trying a bit too hard with very obvious jokes. Didn't care for his audience at all, which I thought were way too loud and boorish. Of course the highlight was definitely his interview with Sandra Bernhard and their phone conversation with the skeevy teeth guy.
I'll probably check it out again.

I was pleasantly surprised with the show. Laughed several times.
I noticed that person number one during the couple guessing game was not shown being matched with someone. They showed the first couple, and then when they jumped to the next, person number one was already sitting with someone.
Or maybe I just missed it or something.

Nope. The Raunch Factor has been turned meaner somehow and a little less funny, particulary when Bernhard started running the table. Graham Norton isn't about the guests, it's about Graham - and when he's good he's delicious. The guests are props.
The "shut up" that came out of Norton, directed at the audience during the match-the-moaner with the-moanee game, didn't sound to me like his comic persona; it sounded like Norton himself, breaking character in an effort to get back control.
The closing monologue showed him back in better form - for lack of a better phrase, he was back to being Graham Norton, the Purveyor of Amiable Smut - we'll see how the show develops in the coming weeks.

Goodness, he's packed up the entire show -- gaudy suits, skits, audience interaction, white laminate desk, phallic phone, and all -- and just plopped it down in New York. I love Graham and certainly don't mind, but I guess I assumed he'd be doing something slightly different.
He was on Regis & Kelly on Thursday and did mention that the audiences in America are much noisier and more enthusiastic than those in England. He said it was one reason he enjoyed America, but I'm thinking it might get old pretty quickly.
I don't much care for Sandra Bernhard, but her ad libs for the "voice of drunken, depressed woman in bar" were pretty funny. And while I realize that low-rent dives have dim lighting for a reason, couldn't those poor men at least have noticed that her lips weren't moving? Damn.

Woo, that was great! It really did keep most of the goodness of the UK shows, which was of great relief to me.
The only problem I saw (and it was a minor quibble) was with Sandra Bernhardt- Graham shines when his guest just lets go and rides the wave, but Sandra was trying to always be in on the joke, or hold the reigns, or something.
The realdoll was hilarious- that man took off for the bathroom at breakneck speed.
Finally, something besides Arrested Development and Reno 911 to look forward to!

Jun 25, 2004 @ 9:48 am
I loved the first show. It dragged a little during the interviews because Sandra so hates to be upstaged and Marlon seemed alternately too hyped and too awkward, but the Real Doll in the bar bit was inspired.
And I think lifting his show whole and plopping it in NYC was a great idea. Not many people have BBC America, so it's not like most Americans are familiar with his format. But it's a format with which he's very familiar and comfortable. He's worked out all the bugs and has it down pat. If Comedy Central wants to make the show a regular series, it's best to introduce him to American audiences in his familiar format. That way they'll see him at his best.

How did you get tickets, Goofy Lookin' Nerd?
I had tickets for the NYC BBC-A tapings, but b/c Cris Rock brought a huge entourage, I got bumped. :(
They told me I'd be hooked up with tix when they came back to NY, but all I got was an e-mail about some tapings in LA last year.
I guess being on CC, they have different people handling the audience booking.

You can't find out who the guest are yet. I've heard they tell ticket holders a bit beforehand, (This is to prevent scheduling snafus)

Hi everybody!!
I found this forum by googling The Graham Norton Effect and when I saw holdencaulfield's usename I recognised it! Also, a small note holden - you copied and pasted from my site without crediting me...... it's ok this time - I'll just credit myself :D www.sograham.tk
Anway, I'm from the UK and I am not seeing GNE until it's sent over to me on video in the summer (july/august I'm guessing) but I can't wait! I am SO glad to see he's retained Stand Up Sit Down from So, and the set is very much more "Graham" than his one-off series which he did for Channel 4 (his previous network here in the UK) called NYGN. As yet, I do not know a place where you can find out guests, I'm working on it!
Also, the tickets! Well, just visit

And run daily instead of weekly.
Yeah, I don't believe he can create much of a stir doing a weekly show. Maybe twice-weekly at least, so there's more often something fresh to air, and it could easily be accomplished if he were to cut the show to 1/2 hour and tighten up the segments.

I watched most of the first show in the most uncomfortable situation ever. I had my three teenaged step nephews, my brother in law and my mother in the room with me. I swear I was the only one who got the breathing aparatus for cunnilingus joke. It was definitely not Graham's audience there with me. I'll withhold judgement until I see this week's show, but so far I definitely prefer the BBC America Graham. I was part of the NYC audience when he brought his show here last spring, and we are way too loud for his kind of show.

Just saw the second episode, (missed the first, but I'm sure there will be a repeat of it at some later date) and it was so funny! Favorite moments have to be Norton having Tilly "Guess The Cleavage", the Spider-Man rhetoric and Norton showing one of her fans gift's "special" uses for Julie Dephy...
P.S.~*Disclaimer* The following comparison is just in looks, does not reflect on on any inherited personality traits of said parties, although the Izzard one is s'allright with loads of folks...
Is it just me, or does Norton look like a cross between CrazyPaSimpson, An Oompa Loompa & Eddie Izzard (especially the speech pattern & physical movement)? Just wondering if anyone see's this at all besides me...

I thought the interviews were much better this week than last, but the bits fell flat. Jennifer Tilly is the perfect guest for Graham (along with John Waters) because she's a warm person and funny storyteller who doesn't get shocked by much and graciously shares the spotlight. And she's a little tacky, a little flashy, very bawdy and loud. Kinda like Graham.
Julie Delpy surprised me in a good way, and her interview showed one of Graham's inherent strengths as a talk-show host. She seemed like a shy but engaging person, but the person interviewing her would make the difference. With Graham, he's very warm and personable and no matter what he asks of his guests, he never makes them look bad. I'm sure she felt comfortable with him, and that brought out the odder and more relatable aspects of her personality.
