I bought the boyfriend the section DVD set for christmas, as he's a big fan, and I've been watching them, and wow. this show is incredibly funny.
How did I miss it the first time around? As with Family Guy, I'm a living example of how well Fox advertises the good shows and over-advertises the crappy shows, like O.C. and Joe Millionaire.
I saw the finale yesterday, boy, that was funny, smartly written and sad.
"I wanna see how it ends." Sob! And I just started watching the series, too!
Fox you, Fox!
starri
"And you, Dean Epsilon, and your Department of Pool Boy Studies!"

They certainly did get the mileage out of the ST "One beep for yes, two beeps for no" thing.
laughing_wild
While watching Clone High on Teletoon Friday night, I swear I saw a commercial saying that they would be airing Futurama starting January 10th (to be followed by Grim and Evil). I remember it so clearly, but Teletoon's website has absolutely no information on it. Did anyone else see this? I feel like I'm taking crazy pills!
Junkyard Dog
Yup, it's coming to Teletoon on the 10th. I've seen that commercial several times now.

Has anybody played the Futurama video game? The show's writers & cast contributed their talents, and there's some funny stuff included.
M. Darcy
I find it really hard to believe that Matt Groening had never seen an episode of Star Trek.
I couldn't believe that when I read it - I was sure you misunderstood something just because it is so unbelievable that he had never seen an episode. Then over the weekend I was listening to the commentaries for Season 1 and some of Season 2. First I thought you had mixed up the Odd Couple and Star Trek, then when Matt said that Kip was based on Mr. Spock I thought it was another clue. Then I heard him say it, he had never seen an episode of Star Trek. I still can't believe it. With all the Star Trek references on the show, wow.
JHeaton
In an E! Online interview from 1998, Groening said:

I love Star Trek and Star Wars and all the variations on them. But, I wanted to do a show in which the problems of the universe are not solved by militarism guided by New Age spirituality.

So I think his comment on the DVD commentary was a joke. That's how I interpreted it when I first heard it, at least.
M. Darcy
It is strange. Maybe as a kid he just didn't watch a lot of tv and spent all of his time drawing instead.
laughing_wild
Sure, now I'm not crazy. Now they put Futurama on their website, when it wasn't there yesterday. Well I may be sane now, but I'm pretty sure that yesterday...not so much.

Fatbot: "I heard that in one single night you drank a whole keg, streaked across campus, and crammed fifty-eight humans into a phone booth."
Bender: "Yeah, well, a lot of 'em were children...."
Schroeder
"And you, Dean Epsilon, and your Department of Pool Boy Studies!"

Oh, this made me die! I saw this one the other day! I would loved to have taken that class, huh, Starri?
starri
Guilty as charged.

I've got the final S1 disc from Netflix. Seeing the episodes with the commentaries is like seeing them again for the first time.
M. Darcy
The commentaries are just as good as the episodes. I just love listening to them. Its even funny when they just run out of things to say.

Ah crap, on the 12th, Futurama is being moved back to 11:30 on the Cartoon Network. I like it better on at 11 - I can listen to it while I go to sleep.
starri
I loved that in the one for "Fry and the Slurm Factory," they all stopped talking during the Grunka Lunka parts because they were cracking up.

"Grunka-Lunka-lunka-de-darmed-guards..."
"Shut the hell up!"

Have I mentioned having Bea Arthur as the voice of Femputer was genius recently?
LTG
Hey, the episode last night was one I had never seen before. Damn, seeing a new ep is like finding an extra Christmas present hidden under the tree about three days after Christmas -- just a totally unexpected pleasure. Woo hoo!
fredfar
The Futurama commentaries are the best I've ever heard by far. Great mix of fun and informative. Love this on the Put Your Head on My Shoulders one:

"So, any inspiration for this episode?"
"Uh, no."
"This is the best audio commentary ever!"
bakaney
Have I mentioned having Bea Arthur as the voice of Femputer was genius recently?

Maybe, starri, but that is something that can never be overstated.

Leela: Bender, maybe you can interface with the Femputer and reprogram her to let them go.
Bender: Maybe you can interface with my ass. By biting it.

but the biggest BWAH! moment for me was this exchange :
Amazonian : But they make fun women's basketball!
Femputer : WHAT?!? Did you explain how the women's good fundamentals makes up for their inability to dunk?
Amazonian : Yes. They still laugh!
Femputer : The men must die!
JHeaton
Ah crap, on the 12th, Futurama is being moved back to 11:30 on the Cartoon Network. I like it better on at 11 - I can listen to it while I go to sleep.

But at least now it doesn't conflict with the 11 PM airing of The Simpsons on WTTG.

By the way, is it my imagination, or are they just showing episodes in random order this week?
M. Darcy
I was going to ask the same thing - if anyone had figured out if there was a reasoning for these episodes. Though, the last two were both Amy/Kip episodes so maybe that's the theme. But tonight's episodes is when Leela plays for the New New York Mets so that ruins that theory.
Argonaut
"Amazon Women in the Mood" has to one of my very favorite episodes. I can never get over this line from Femputer: "Do you have any idea what it's like to be a Fembot in a Manputer/Manbot's world?"

It's ridiculous, and that's why I love it.
rack
I haven't listened to all the commentaries yet, but I do love the way that John DiMaggio keeps on cracking up.
Junkyard Dog
Doesn't Billy West do one of the upcoming S3 commentaries in character as Dr. Zoidberg?
laughing_wild
John DiMaggio is my favourite part of the commentaries - it's hilarious when you can hear him laughing his ass off in the background. He's just so loud, and that makes me laugh. I remember being really surprised the first time I saw a picture of him, because I just assumed he would be much older than he actually is. That laugh just doesn't fit with someone who barely looks 30.
fredfar
Junkyard Dog:
Yep, he does Bird-Bot of Ice-Catraz as Zoidy and A Pharoah to Remember as Fry, along with John as Bender. Spoilered just in case.

More great Amazon Women quotes:
"You win again gravity!"
"The restaurant you are calling has crashed into a planet. Please make a note of it."
Ruvane
"She's built like a steakhouse, but handles like a bistro." Also, Zaps whole Lola/Leela song. How flattering for Leela.
starri
"We hear tell men used for snu-snu. But all we have go on are ancient legend and subscription to Cosmo."

A sobering thought--Tress MacNeille probably did the voice of most if not all the Amazonians. She's a talented lady.
M. Darcy
A really nice thing about John DiMaggio that I noticed during the second run through of the commentaries is that he is always saying wonderful things about the other actors doing the voices. He does seem a bit obsessed with the fact that Frank Welker is also Freddie's voice on Scobby-Doo. He mentions it a few times.

Jeez, a thousand years later and the Mets still suck. If you can't beat the Swedish Meatballs, you are really the worst team ever.
starri
Everything I've ever read from anyone who worked on Futurama always mentions that John is the nicest guy in the world.

I noticed the compliments too; during "Fry and the Slurm Factory" he goes on and on about how so much of the episode is Billy West talking to himself, and you'd never know it. And that the real heros of the show are the folks like Maurice LaMarche, Dave Herman, and Tress MacNeille who have to do so many different characters that have different voices but have to be distinct from the characters they did on last week's episode. He also made everyone stop talking in the "The Series Has Landed" one to say that Katey Sagal rocks.

Sweet guy.
LTG
But tonight's episodes is when Leela plays for the New New York Mets so that ruins that theory.

Well then, the theme for the week is obviously "Episodes lawtalkin'guy never saw." Wahoo!
M. Darcy
I knew there was a theme! To make it offical - have you seen Futurestock?
LTG
I think I've seen about 5 minutes of that one. It's my lucky week!

I was cleaning my office today and found 13 futurama mini-buttons I made out of an old Futurama calendar.

First 13 people who post say they want in get one each if they are willing to send me a SAE (no stamp unless you're in Canada) along with 'something small and stupid' (like a postcard, stickers, a label from can of soup, whatever). You can choose which one you want by number (first come first served).

I would like no 5. I'm in Canada - a regular stamp will do, right?
Glark
Yeah, just regular letter postage.
JHeaton
#2
NIce. Put me down for number 1.

Just watched "A Leela of Her Own." Did Hank Aaron do the voice of both Hank Aarons, or just Hank Aaron I?
phxchic
#3
Can I have number 8?
naugastyle
#4
Ooh, I'll take 13. I never wear buttons but it's so funny I have to have it.

But at least now it doesn't conflict with the 11 PM airing of The Simpsons on WTTG.

Well, lucky you. It will definitely conflict with the 11:30 Simpsons on the NYC affiliate.

Ooh, buttons! I'll take number 3 please.
BlondieBear

And in a soft brown voice she said 11

I think most are already taken so whichever one you want to send me is fine Glark.

I shall have to pick something suitably TWoPy.

eta: D'oh! I work at a tv station. I can probably dig up some CBS promotional thing for you.
augustanachic1689
#10
Can I have #10? Please? I'll send ya chocolate covered expresso beans.
rack
#11 So long as some part of this works, I don't wanna be right.
cinaea
#13

Please put me down for #6! My boy Zapp!

I just watched the first two episodes of Season 2 last night (I  my box sets!), and how much do I love Zapp Brannigan?

Leela, can I ask you a serious question? Does the company that makes your bra also make girdles?

We'll fly in under the white flag of war!
M. Darcy
#12 I think 12 is left - if not any of the ones that are left are fine.

Glark rules!!
Glark
Cineaea can't count. Everyone point and laugh! :P
Ok, we're done. Please include your username and button choice in your mail to me! Thanks!
cinaea
cinaea signed up belatedly, but is still worthy of ridicule.

Glark, on the other hand, can't spell. But we're much too afraid to point and laugh.
Glark
Touche!
Schroeder
Damn! I missed out. Get sick with the stomach virus, get away from the computer for four days, and I miss out on a Glark giveaway.

Does anyone know how many of the Season II DVD episodes have commentaries on them?

And as someone who comes late to Futurama, what the hell is Amy's purpose, scriptwise, for being at the Planet Express delivery service? I finally saw the pilot episode, but I can't tell why or how she's a part of the group.
Eh, same goes for Zoidberg. What's his role and how did he show up?
I figured out Hermes during How Hermes Requsitioned his Groove Back.
starri
Zoidberg is Planet Express' staff doctor. He, like Hermes, has been there since before Fry, Leela and Bender.

Amy is their unpaid intern. She got hired because she's the same blood type as the Professor.

Assuming they follow the same pattern for SII, all the episodes will have commentary.
