She does sound like Macy Gray a little, but she's better.
The claws are scary though.

And she's from High Point, NC - a hop, skip and a jump from Raleigh. Could she make it to the final 12? We'll see.

I liked the timbre of her voice although IMO nobody can do "Proud Mary" like Miss Trenyce. Maybe she'll be a darkhorse and surprise me (in a good way) like Trenyce did throughout the competition.
The girl's got a great stage name though! Fanstasia! I love it!

Sheesh. An hour and 45 minutes to hear a voice I liked.
Of course, she just got the Simon kiss of death: "One of the best we've ever had." When Simon says that, the contestant is usually doomed. Remember WhitneyBot? I predict final 32, but won't make the final 12. I hope I'm wrong. But not much. I have ceased to care.

I think it sounds more like a stripper name. But her voice was pretty good.

Great name but how long can you listen to that same voice?
There was a girl last year, young blond teen thing, who sounded great in the auditions, but her voice was really all in one range. I think Simon annointed her the next Christina Aguilera or something. When she got to Hollywood, she sang in Julia DeMato's group and just sounded horrible singing a song with range. My guess--same thing here.

Really? I thought her name is the worst. Fantasia is the name of the company that does those tupperware-but-with-dildos-instead parties. It's a total porn star name.
I did like her voice, though, even if I thought it was a little shaky.

Don't like Macy Gray, don't really like Fantasia either.
I did love her top though and it looked very nice on her.
I think Fantasia would be a great stage name if it hadn't already been used by two Disney films of the same name. Seriously, the first thing I thought of when I heard "Fantasia" were dancing pink hippos and Mickey Mouse.

Its not a stage name, its a drag queen name. Except for the Barrino. I dunno what that is. A real performer would make it sound less like a Mexican wrap and more exotic in the sexy way.
Unless its her real name. In which case, what were her parents on?

That's what I mean
Rachel. I mean it's just perfect IMO, for a show
this over the top. Hopefully she'll be daring with her song choices and strive to be unique with her presentation IMO kind've like Trenyce was. She's got potential at least.

I didn't really get the Macy Gray comparison. Unless that's what Macy sounds like non-stoned. She was okay but if you're going to pick a stage name, steer clear of Disney. Next episode we may get a Cinderella or Mulan.

Didn't like her voice, and I can't see anyone liking it for more than 20 seconds. And never do a Paybee song. You'll lose.
Anyone else freaked by the lip(?) piercing? Thought it was a massive mole up until the very end.

Was it a piercing? It look so high up. I thought it was just a little Marilyn Monroe rhinestone faux mole- to go along with her Marilynesque top.

Her singing voice and Macy Gray's didn't sound alike to me. However, her speaking voice is very similar to Macy Gray's. I liked her. She's the only one I'm interested in hearing sing again.

BWAH!
I was very meh on her. I was shocked when the judges praised her like she was the second coming, but, then again, I so rarely agree with the judges anyway. I liked her better than some others they've out through, (that animosity is reserved for Scooter Girl and the equally attention-starved KimberMe Redux), but she'd never inspire me to dial her 1-866 number, should she make it that far.

Liked the top, hated the teeth but her voice was really good. IMO her rendition of Proud Mary had more spark than Trenyce's. Definitely a top 12 person. If she can prove she has range I'd buy her CD.

Speak it, Queen B. I hate to sound all image-conscious and all, but girl looked busted. Like she's not too far from the street.
Her singing wasn't good. I don't get what all the praise was about, either. I think whenever you pick a Tina song, people hear yelling and think it's good. Lakeeta - with all of her tonal problems - sang rings around this woman. Good thing is, we may just have our "Wudda abou da chirrun?" spot filled for the semis.
And that name has GOT to go. Who's up tonight, Juwanna Mann?

I was almost going to say "At least she didn't wait until after the audition process to change her name to something unique" but then I realize that Fantasia Barrino is probably her real name. I can imagine her viciously fighting her way through life because of that name.
I hated her voice. And how proper is it that she's from "High Point" because her voice was just this high point the whole time. Too much.
I can't stand looking at her.

I see Fantasia as more of an LSD thing. I could never sit through Fantasia without thinking that my uncles used to drop a tab of acid and trip to it back in the 70's. But it all makes sense to me...because someone had to be tripping to name her Fantasia, and Simon had to be tripping when he said she was the best that he's heard.

Hee, Chunkee.
This woman was seriously off key. I wasn't even sure what key she was singing in at first. I've got a feeling the judges put her through so as not to appear to be discriminating against the ugly.

I can't decide whether I thought she sounded amazing or flat. She hit flat notes at the start, but then somewhere in the process she kicked major ass and after a few seconds it was already over. Too short. In other words: put me on the Fantasia-list, but in pencil. I need to hear more.

I don't know where these AI judges/producers come from (actually I do), but 'round here, it's not a compliment to be compared to Macy Gray. I already know she'll be very grating to listen to more than once. Though not horrible, her "Proud Mary" was not as good as Trenyce's or even Jessica Simpson's.

She was OK. I liked Laketa a lot more, but that could be just because Laketa's prettier. (I'm shallow, but I'm acknowledging my shallowness. Everything's OK!). Her family was cute, though. Her dad (or brother?) looked like Rerun.

Did Simon really say she was one of the BEST he's ever heard? I can't believe that. But then again, he probably thought the Spices were great, too. I wasn't even sure what key Fantasia was in at first. The only notably on pitch word I heard her say was "PROUD". I bet Simon didn't even hear what she sang, what with all the flapping in the breeze. What's with all of the flapping this season, anyway?

Jan 23, 2004 @ 11:31 am
I think what Simon meant was that she's was the best he'd heard that day, not that she was the best ever.
Personally, I thought her voice was distinctive, in sort of a Macy Gray or Nelly Furtado kind of way, but not great. If Macy Gray and Nelly Furtado can have successful careers then why not Fantasia. Although she really needs to consider changing her name. It sounds like she either ought to be working in porn or working in a Disney on ice show as one of the ballet-dancing hippos.

I didn't get the appeal of Fantasia. I am sometimes floored by Simon's responses--I completely expected him to tell her to pack it in and go home. I can't imagine she'll be around for long.

Hee. The minute she stepped out onstage I lost it. Once when I was grabbing a burger at White Castle in my home town, I saw a mother and two young children, and I swear I heard her call the daughter "Fantasia". Keeping in mind the daughter looked about three might have had something to do with my instant rush of sympathy - that, and having an unusual name myself. It was so insulting to me - I instantly thought, "Jeebus, think of the jokes the poor thing'll have to endure for her entire life" - and it incensed me so badly I almost stepped up and asked the mother how the heck she could saddle her kid with such a suggestive name. Then, she employed it again, and I heard that the name was really "Natasia", but really, it was touch and go there for me for a minute. And when I saw that there was actually an adult woman whose parents had named her "Fantasia", I laughed until I cried.

She reminds me of Michelle from Destiny's Child. You know the new one that replaced the girls they kicked out and stayed after they kicked the other new girl out. They both talk the same and have the same singing voice. I thought she sounded much better tonight.
