Just making it official.
Watch Over Me, starting tonight at 8pm EST, is the fourth of My Network TV's
telenovela adaptation projects (and technically the second in their
Desire sub-series of 65-episode adaptations, though that part of things is never mentioned any more). The plot goes like this:
A beautiful psychology student, Julia, is engaged to be married to Michael, a wealthy but ruthless man, who loves Julia despite his philandering nature. Unbeknownst to her, Michael's business enterprise is involved in nefarious activities. Because of this, Michael hires a bodyguard, Jack, ex-Special Forces, to protect himself and his one true love, while Julia has no suspicion that the very person she must ultimately be shielded from is her own fiancée.
An intense attraction forms between Julia and Jack. Jack tries not to let his growing feelings for Julia cloud his judgment on the job, but he is torn between duty and desire. Despite their attempts to hide their genuine feelings for one another, rumors begin to spread among the staff regarding their undeniable attraction. Neither one of them realizes just how much peril they are in. As the lovers struggle with their feelings for each other, they begin to uncover the web of deceit and murder that Michael has woven around their lives.
The main cast, so far, is:
Dayanara Torres (Julia Rivera)
Todd Cahoon (Jack Porter)
Marc Menard (Michael Krieger)
Caitlin McCarthy (Caroline Krieger)
Casper Van Dien (Andre)
Catherine Oxenberg (Leandra Thames)

My one problem with "Watch Over Me" is how they are going to add the interesting supporting characters that "Desire" and "Fashion House" had. A rogue bodyguard for the wife of an evil business man just seems like a very contained universe to me.

I can't believe they have Casper Van Dien and Catherine Oxenberg, two well known actors and aren't using them in the promos. Whoever they've cast as the female lead is terrible based on the promo.
I also found it weird that Fashion House had Tippi Hedren and never mentioned it.

Dayanara Torres at least has potential. She did a two-episode bit on Y&R a couple of years ago (Jack Abbott's tennis-playing fling, Elise) and did okay with it. Of course, two episodes does not a series make.
If anything, I'm kind of surprised Catherine Oxenberg--definitely the biggest "name" attached to WOM--isn't (apparently) getting the la Fairchild treatment or so on. Then again, the opening credits haven't aired yet...

Oh I remember that tennis fling, IIRC she was to make Phyllis jealous right? But I'm most looking forward to seeing Oxenberg again. I always loved Amanda on Dynasty and her family was so beautiful on her Lifetime reality show. I also believe she looks better now than she did when she was younger.

Color me surprised...this at least is starting out a lot more serious in tone than FH did.
And Tatum O'Neal is already rocking the BSC look from the get-go...

I wonder if that has anything to do with how much said stars will agree to go out and do promotion for their series, figuring if Tippi Hedren won't talk up Fashion House to Good Day LA, there's not much point in sending out press releases touting her presence.

Hmm...this looks more standard-issue romantic suspense soap with as someone pointed out, not a lot of room for the campier stuff.
Also some recognizable faces beyond Mr. and Mrs. Van Dien: John Callahan, Lisa Ann Walter (who didn't appear in Ep 1?), and Roxana Zal.

I find a really distracting resemblance between Caspar Van Dien and Caitlin's creepy boss. It it just me?
Also love the bartending broad ("Chessy" from the Parent Trap remake--a really great character actress--this one seems to have better talent across the board than FH and Desire)
Anyone else spot "Stami" from Alison Sweeny's maternity leave on DOOL?
Bill C, the ESL description for Dayanara is right on--I've seen her be really expressive and sweet in Spanish so I think it's just a language thing. I have sympathy for anyone in JLo's wake;)
Ah. *Swoon* Cahoon. Hot Toddy, Hot Toddy.

Please allow me to humbly retract my former statement:
WOM seem[s] to have better talent across the board than FH and Desire
Yeah. Sorry about that.
There is *some* decent acting, but as much as I'm digging the swoon-worthiness of Todd Cahoon's "nightman" jaw, there's just not a lot of redemtion in Buzzcut's "I sell viruses and DEATH, get it?!" one-dimensional bad-guy-ness, the cardboard cut-out "best friend" characters, the LITERAL cardboard hospital sets from
SH!Gloria, and the flat (well her acting, anyway) va-voom weapons tycoon of death person(?) who I suppose is meant to be WOM's version of
SH!. But so far I'm only seeing the
S!Am I the only fool watching [over] this thing?

I watched Thursday and I really can't believe that Krieger is Boyd from AMC. He looks way different! Dayanara Torres is a really bad actress. I'm pretty amazed that Casper Van Dien and Cathering Oxenberg in the show has gotten like zero attention. And they're not even too bad in it...yet.
Lyle Lyle
Dec 13, 2006 @ 3:47 am
While WOM has its share of flat acting, it's not bothering me so much. Somehow, Desire's bad acting was much more irritating for me.
Anyway, I'm still watching this one, partly because Todd Cahoon is so nice to look at but the show's also holding my attention better than Desire, or the first month of Fashion House did.

Maybe it's because the whole "bio-weapons" dealer thing is so much more original than yet another mafia plot thing?--on top of the usual forbidden love sudser stuff.
I'm liking most of the ancillary characters too--Dayanara's yogi gay brother was a nice addition.
Pete is a complete moron--can't imagine he's coming out of the freak lab o' death alive now?

Jan 17, 2007 @ 9:38 am
Jack is awesome! ITA about the sexy feet. Boobella must be in booty heaven right now!
I'm sorry, I really tried to be patient with Julia but she is truly too stupid to live! No wonder her dumb ass can't leave the house without an escort! Why would she use her own cell phone to snoop on Michael? Thanks to her "sleuthing," she almost got Natalie killed. And if she really doesn't trust Michael, why the f*ck is she marrying him? At all? Her whining about Michael and Boobella is also getting old especially since she's planning a wedding! GRRRRRRRR!! There are times I find myself screaming at the TV, "Just walk away, Jack, cuz the heifer aint' even worth it!"
I still think Michael is a super freak and he would have gotten his swerve on even without the sake and doctored drink.

Since I missed a lot of the episodes I am glad that they ran a recap of the whole show. Funny ex-Navy seal driving a taxi, how believable is that? Julia is dumber than a box of rocks. She is playing high school love games. Jack deserves better. Boobella is far prettier than Julia.
One question that I still need an answer to is, how did Jack end up working for Michael?
Does anyone get the feeling that Dr. Christine might just be the one to bring down the whole operation because she is conflicted with doing wrong?
Bill C
Jan 17, 2007 @ 10:57 am
Apparently Jack and Supercuts--that is, Michael--went to high school together. Michael offered Jack a job initially when he stopped a kidnapping attempt at a party that he crashed because he was hot for Julia.
As for Dr. Baden...it'd be nice for her to come over to the side of light and goodness because of the love of a good man, but I'm still not sure she hasn't been flagged as a redshirt because she's working for Supercuts both on and off the clock. Other than Steve the Twit, someone else in the "middle" has to die...I just know it.
MulletorHater
Jan 17, 2007 @ 11:12 am
I was surprised about Dr. Baden though. I thought she really cared for Alfred. Maybe she does in her own little way; I would hate to think the whole thing was an act.
As for someone else dying, maybe Caitlin will stop feeling sorry for herself and lifting her skirts long enough to put two and two together. She's had two boyfriends who disappeared on her. Although why she even thought she had a future with Steve to begin with is beyond me.

Jan 17, 2007 @ 11:12 am
I think it'll be Dr. Baden who bites it. She's not major enough to really shake up the story, but it will give Julia's dad a good reason to get the goods on Supercuts (though he knows something's going on anyway) and team up with Jack to bring him down. And it will give Julia more proof that Supercuts is more than just a control freak. She really is dumber than a box of rocks.
I like that Jack is teaching Caroline self-defense. Here's hoping she soon uses it on her father.

Thank you Bill C. You know all!
Jack's sister is stupid too. Two men both missing, how much bad luck can one girl really have?
I will stick to my Dr. Christine theory of her bringing down the house of Supercuts and his freaky hand.
Who cares about Julia anymore? She is so wishy washy and once again dumber than a box of rocks. Boobella rules at this point.
MulletorHater
Jan 17, 2007 @ 2:11 pm
Yeah, Julia had definitely better get on the stick because Boobella is working it these days. Even though Michael is obviously repulsed by Boobella, he still is able to get his equipment to work in order to "perform." So he isn't that repulsed by her.
I LOVE the idea of Caroline using her new self-defense techniques on her dad. LOL!

Funny ex-Navy seal driving a taxi, how believable is that?
Jack hesitated, though, before accepting the job from Supercuts because he didn't want to be doing that sort of thing anymore. So, Jack ended up driving a taxi because he didn't want to find a job that made use of the experience he had.
MulletorHater
Jan 17, 2007 @ 2:32 pm
OOPS! Yes, I meant to say that it's Jack that's repulsed--not Supercuts. LOL!
Speaking of which, I always felt that Supercuts has more chemistry with Boobella than he does with Julia.
I loved Jack's chemistry with Julia in the beginning, but it's starting to wear down because of her wishy-washiness.

I certainly think that Boobella is a lot more striking in looks than Julia. Boobella has more confidence. Julia looks silly in some of those fashions from the new line Metro 7, hahaaaa why can't they just say Walmart? Julia needs a lot more makeup and Boobella less.
Over all yes, I think Michael would bed Boobella in a heartbeat if she would lower her standards. She is not stupid. I would jump on Jack any day too!! He is so yummy and sexy.

Lose the eyeliner, Princess Ardala. That's all I ask. (And maybe some modest ass implants. But hey.)
As for her and Michael hooking up...since they're both TEH EVOL the only way this would happen is in the form of a one night stand--that is, furious hate sex. Not that this is a bad thing...

Furious hate sex between Supercuts and Boobella would be terrific, as well as good soap. Since Jack is less and less likely to do the deed with her, maybe Michael will go when he needs that crucial bit of information.
Or else he'll send Andre, hee!

Since my posts melted in the Server Meltdown '07, I'm reposting my theory that I wouldn't be suprised if Andre isn't what he seems because he's a deep-cover agent who's been investigating Michael for a while but hasn't been able to bust him because of his connections. Since Michael's got a Senator and the Chief of Police in his pocket, then he's probably got at least one Fed too. As for Pete and the other doctor, I also wouldn't be suprised if they weren't dead fter all, just in the Witness Protection Program, which could work if Andre insisted on "taking care" of the bodies all by himself. Since Andre, not Leandra, found Pete first, he could have warned Pete to play along if he wants to live. Just because we saw some men carrying out some biohazard containers that doesn't mean that Pete's body was in them.
About Steve, Andre could have choked him unconscious and once he woke up, warned him that if he tries to squeal, that he would go to prison for fraud. As for Carjacker Guy, maybe Andre wanted to go vigilante on his ass and served him up to Michael out of spite.
Oh Andre, he does have quite the personality, doesn't he? hahahha He reminds me of a piece of chalk, stiff and boring.
There's nothing wrong with stiffness-in the right place, that is, as Ryan could attest.

Julia is a bit slow on the uptake right now. But she's juuuuuuust about to clue in. (I think.)
I have NO problem with Jack boinking Boobella to get what he needs. It's all in the service of bringing Michael down (and eventually getting Julia, protecting her, yadayada) etc. It's actually somewhat morally superior--at least far less ambiguous--than Julia being back with Michael at the moment. Jack knows exactly how he feels about this and is doing what he has to do for the survival of himself and those he loves....whereas little miss doe eyes (who I still find likeable in spite of all the twisting in the wind) is just waffling around and back with Michael for who knows what reason. EVERY TIME Supercuts creepily turns up unannounced she looks totally dismayed. How can he be so intuitive about other things and so in the dark about that?
I hope Baden doesn't bite it....Poor little Alfred. We know Leandra will eat it in SPECTACULAR fashion at the end because Natasha always must suffer. Andre/Boris on the other hand....I'm holding on to
Prettyeyes' fabu theory that he's a fed or a double agent or something. Hoping, anyway!
Here's what the MNTV site says about Baden:
She's conflicted about her work, but continues to do it out of fear of Michael. Michael forces her (though also compensates her) to begin a relationship with Alfred (Tony Castillo) to spy on him, but Christine then develops genuine feelings for Alfred.
Ok, stitching kanji characters onto kimono to communicate? Laaaaaaaame. Seriously.
And I hate to say it, but Boobella--hate her though I did--is growing on me. Maybe b/c I buy her talking about sex and dying and stuff. It's the business talk that just doesn't work coming out of her mouth.
And um, EYELINER? Like that wouldn't have smudged in his sock??

Yeah, that was REALLY weird last night the way Supercuts' attack happened in front of Jack. But he was warned a while ago that the attacks would happen more frequently. I don't think that Jack will feel sorry for Michael. I think last night kind of freaked Jack out and now it will make him more determined to get the hell out of there, but not before he makes sure that Julia, Caroline and Albert are out of there.

I don't think Jack will feel sorry for Supercuts either. Seeing him have that attack gives Jack something to hold over Supercuts's head so that Jack can finally leave.

That's what I was thinking also. I even thought it happened by accident, but I don't think Supercuts
ever does anything by accident. I know he freaked out on Julia's dad a while ago because he wasn't moving fast enough. I don't think it's all monetary either.
And Julia is still showing that she's simply too dumb to live. Caroline is all of 14 or 15 and managed to put two and two together that Julia was the one that called the insurance investigator. Now if a kid can figure it out, how long will it be before Boris and Natasha guess? Talk about doing a piss-poor job of covering your tracks!

I'm kind of surprised they didn't have the insurance investigator say the woman who called had an accent. I know that would make things too easy, but it's so obvious. I'm sure Boris and Natasha (more likely, Natasha on her own, since Boris is all huffy about not being Supercuts's favorite these days) will figure it out. And that will kick off the last arc of the series.

The house (where I believe they shot *a few* interiors--you can tell when there's an obvious view of outside, but otherwise Bill C is right, the interiors are shot on the lot at Segall, as well as a couple other soundstages) is in Rancho Santa Fe, a ritzy little horsey enclave northeast of SD. I actually think (didn't ever work on those locations, this is just from watching) that Sasha and Blythe's houses might be the same one from different angles. Usually they do an ok job merging the two.
[OT] My favorite exception was on WWG when Josh gets stood up by Emma in the hospital board room for the faux meeting and the view out the window is clearly of San Francisco. It's this massive mylar/plastic photo sheet thing that hangs on the wall of the stage and I was like, um, isn't that the transamerica building? *shrug* Maybe in a blur it won't matter. It was SO obvious.
I think Michael is pushing the Persues virus so hard to get a cure for HIMSELF. Not sure if he was infected on purpose or what--seems he'd always have a way to get human "volunteers" so who knows. Maybe Gabrielle did it TO him and that's why he had her killed? Dunno.
Caroline is supposed to be 16.
I think Boris is all huffy (if Prettyeyes is correct) b/c it a) keeps his cover and b) if he's squeezed out, threatens his operation. But again--he'd have to know by this time that Jack is an ally.
And seriously, when did Le,er, Natasha decide to start treating Jack like a person? It really was a total 180.
