This Aussie soap was the first to be imported and screened in Britain, and is probably the best of them all.
The Sullivans was clearly inspired by the British series A Family At War, which dealt with an ordinary, working-class clan dealing with the trauma of living during the Second World War. It was made by Crawford's rather than Grundy, which had a greater reputation for quality than Grundy and its programmes had noticeably higher production values.
The series was slow-moving and sentimental, but contained thoughtful storylines, wonderful acting (particularly from Lorraine Bayly as the dignified Grace Sullivan and Vivean Gray as the town gossip Mrs. Jessop) and flawless period detail.
