I’m completely addicted to this show, and don’t really know why. The acting is awful for the most part, and there are so way to many characters, I feel like I finally figure out who someone is, but then they disappear. The storylines aren’t so great for the most part. I like the longer arcs, for example with Dan’s imprisonment, and how it affects the Hunters, but the shorter storylines, which only last for a week, are harder to invest in. As I’ve only been watching few moths, and its hard to care when a college student steals another’s poo sculptor, when I don’t even know the character’s names and I don’t hear from them again after the three day story line is over. Still this might be because I’ve been watching for such a short time.

I've heard of this show; usually it's when I'm looking for Corrie articles in the Hello! and OK! magazines at Barnes and Noble. It sounds like the British answer to Dawson's Creek, but serialized in many-episodes-a-week installments.

Finally a Hollyoaks thread! I've always been too scared to start one! I've been addicted to the show for years.
I think Hollyoaks is starting to become more mainstream, with Brookside now gone it's becoming the the fourth big soap along with Eastenders, Corrie and Emmerdale.
I'm worried though about the axing of 14 character, many of the ones going are my favourites. It looks like all we're being left with are the students and the annoying new families

I'm kind of talking out of my ass here, but what about
Coronation Street? (I gather we're talking about England here?)

Corrie is Coronation Street. That's its nickname.

I’m also upset about some of the characters they are killing off, but I do think that there are too many characters on the show, so a mass killing is an interesting way of getting rid of the excess. But I also heard they will start to rebuild the cast after the killing, so I don’t quite see the point.

Thanks, TheCustomOfLife! I feel dumb now.
joy1983, if they really do rebuild the cast, then the likeliest reason for a mass killing would be to eliminate some of the more expensive, veteran actors from the cast. Newbies are much cheaper to have on the payroll.

Hollyoaks hasn't been on the air that long (what, nine years?), so I don't think there is a big problem regarding veteran castmembers.

News on the departure of TWO more HOLLYOAKS cast members.
Helen Noble and Barney Cleverly are to bow out playing Abby and Will Davies respectively in July. Abby leaves Chester to go to Bournemouth UNI and it is yet un-known as to how Will leaves the show. It is thought that Ben will re-locate elsewhere in Hollyoaks meaning his character WILL remain in the soap.
More Info
Two more Hollyoaks cast members are to be written out of the show in September, after crisis meetings were held by show bosses on Friday. It was decided that, in a bid to revive ratings, Christine Bailey who plays newcomer Danni Carbone, and Jimmy McKenna who plays pub landlord Jack Osbourne are to leave the hit Channel 4 soap.
Christine's character is set to be involved in a relationship with Will Davies (whose also leaving the soap, as reported in May). The two will be humiliatingly disgraced by residents as their affair is exposed by son Ben.
Jimmys character Jack will die of lung cancer in whats penned to be one of Hollyoaks most emotional storylines, leaving the Dog In The Pond to son Darren and daughter Ruth. Thus promting her return to the show in July.
Bosses are also keen to bring back three previous characters, Gary Lucy who played Luke Morgan, Alex Bell who was played by Martino Lazzeri and feisty character Geri Hudson played by Joanna Taylor

Well the girl that plays Dannii can't act so she's no great loss.
They really are loosing nearly all the cast that's been there for more than a year- Lisa, Lee, their mum and dad, Abby, Zara, Cameron, Norman, Mandy, Robbie, Izzy, Scott, Nick, Kristian, Will, Jack and the girl that plays Debbie has now quit to spend more time with her Westlife boyfriend. There's literally going to be no one of any worth left!

Christmas in Hollyoaks should be exciting!! Acording to rumours/spoilers
- Justin and Becca get it on
- Mandy is tempted to cheat with regular

Whoa, I was not expecting to find a Hollyoaks thread on here. It seems pretty empty, is anyone else watching it?
I just have to say that Dannii's exit couldn't come soon enough. The character was appealing, but Christina Baily really needs to tune up her acting skills. The first scene of Friday's episode was painful to watch, mainly because CB wasn't making that much of an effort to escape from Russ's grip on her.

I can't believe there isn't a more active forum for Hollyoaks! I love it. Weirdly, since I hate pretty much every character on it...maybe its because they all suffer so terribly. Like Tony, for example. Becca, on the other hand, cannot suffer too much. Mandy's smackdown today (on C4) had me literally cheering. I hate Becca more than I think is healthy for a fictional character.
Otherwise, OB, please come home, baby. You are needed. By me, if no one else. Claire has to go, we all know you're Tom's real Mummy.

Jun 8, 2006 @ 2:45 pm
Nooo! They can't get rid of Claire. I haven't enjoyed seeing a character be so over the top evil since the halcyon days of Izzy's Mum and PsychoLesbian Laura(/Lara?). How Max can't realise she's Satan when she walks around giving everyone the evil eye is just one the many comedy Hollyoaks Highlights that keeps me watching.
Was Tony and Mandy's baby called Grace or Antonia? Was that a plot point or did they just decide to change for no reason one day like they did with Sam/Liam?
Agreed on Becca though. Her face hasn't changed for the last week, and she's the worst offender in terms of the Hollyoaks school of "Touch The Wall" acting. Every time someone gets emotional they have to either rub their fingers along a wall or slide down in it pulling a scrunched up sad face. That and the fact she doesn't point out that Jake had an affair with Lisa (aka The Honey Monster) who was all of about 12 at the time, so they're even. But then we wouldn't have the joys of Nancy calling her an "dirty...disgusting...PAEDOPHILE!" before stomping off.
Comedy moment of the year.

She was called Antonia for what felt like months, but was probably only a few weeks (you know how a day feels like a week in Hollyoaks time) then Mandy decided she couldn't stand that name since, you know, it reminded her of Tony every time she looked at her daughter. So Antonia became Grace. Apparently now
Mandy is going to "grow closer" to Dom which has been on the cards since day one. I want something more imaginative, like Mandy having a complete mental breakdown and going after Justin to see what all the fuss is about.

Yes, you are right, NotPatrick, Claire is a great character. I'm just bitter because she drove OB away. I just love the way she always pulls a face behind Max's back when they hug -so camp. Just once, it'd be great if there was a mirror there and she was caught out.
"I don't think we were ever meant to be together" - Mandy, a truer word was never spake. Yet whilst I applaud her decision to drop Tony, I can't help but feel she could upgrade a little higher than Dom Nice-but-Dim. Anyone else choke themselves on ironic laughter as Tony and Jake criticised everyone else for selfishness?
As for the Honey Monster, I'm just grateful to her because she took the ball of self-satisfaction that was Ben off my screen.

Eee, Hollyoaks! There's nothing quite like coming home from a hard day at work and sitting down with my housemate to laugh our way through an episode, ridiculing the writing/acting/directing - well basically everything about it - throughout. Yet despite our mockery, we remain addicted and utterly helpless in the face of any attempts to do something else at 6:30/7 every evening. It clearly has a strange and unhealthy hold over us.
How fantastic is Tom though? The way he effortlessly acts everyone else off the screen is priceless. I loved how he foiled those shoplifters (the hideous Michaela and her less hideous but ten times more boring friend) a couple of days ago. It was just beautiful.

Maybe it's because I came in on the end of this storyline after ignoring Hollyoaks for many years, but this is nowhere near the levels of mind-numbingness attained by the Luke/rape storyline.
But seriously: kill her off or something.
Fortunately I tend to have my dinner closer to eight. By that point I've scrubbed my brain sufficiently.

Seriously, nothing will get to the "FFS just DIE already" levels present when evil drug dealer Rob(at least I think that was his name) kept on showing up again and again to drown someone, bend someone else to his evil will using his evil drugs of evil, or to blow up a bus or something. Speaking of old-school Hollyoaks, Tony has to leave the show at some point. Do you think he'd ever get another acting gig?
Did anyone see John Paul declaring his love for Craig? While Craig looked on with an unchanging expression.
The actor was playing it a little ott I thought, maybe I thought he was a good actor before because of the comparison with Craig 'I have two emotions' Dean?

Justin: When Warren is disgusted with you, that's pretty much rock-bottom.
And poor John-Paul! Poor Craig a little because he's lost his best (only) friend but he did it by being an idiot.
I love the things they had Sonny be interested in:
'Ultimate Fighting! Like cage-fighting, but even sicker!'
'It's thong night o MTV!'
Way to woo yourself a new friend Sonny.
I think I'm in love with Jaqui(Jackie?), first being the only one in the family to know about J-P's drama (from prison!), then kneeing Justin in the groin.

I've gotta say that some bad acting aside (and this is Hollyoaks so bad acting is pretty much to be expected), that this John Paul storyline has been handled so well. Every single aspect of it, from John Paul coming to terms with it personally to how Craig's dealing with it, from the reaction and different opinions of his family to the abuse at school, it all feels spot on realistic. This week's shows were all awesome.
Quick question: I only came back to Hollyoaks a month ago so I was wondering if I missed any scenes where Jacqui figured out her brother was gay. Did I?
Now if only they could get snivelly annoying Becca off my screen and give me more sexy gorgeous Zoe and her sexy CREEPY Will instead.

Totally engrossed with the John Paul / Craig storyline. I can't believe I'm going to say this, but, I think they're showing a lot of subtlety with Craig's character. Guy is doing a great job. There have been some very ambiguous moments where Craig has been shown to be , IMHO, very possibly in love with John Paul. Or just curious. :-) In particular, when the boys changed into their suits the day before the dance-off, JP wasn't the only one stealing glances. Then, of course, Craig was the one who initiated the kiss between them at the dance. Then when they returned to school, JP said he was going to leave, Craig barred the door and literally shouted that he didn't want JP to leave. I also got the feeling Craig wasn't quite pleased when a few days later, JP explained that he had been confused and would make a go of it with Hannah. I'm very interested in seeing where this all goes, and hope they return to this storyline soon.

I don't really find Hollyoaks that interesting now that it's not the JP and Craig show*.
They have been surprisingly subtle with this storyline.

This week was blaaah, Amy needs to do some growing up/bonding with baby rather than just being yelled at by dad and looking like a sulky teenager. The way her mum behaved was pretty devastating and I think they need to address that.

BBC America just announced that HOLLYOAKS will be shown on weeknights here at 10 PM EST.
I hope they begin the episodes with the arrival of the McQueens.

In announcing the new schedule, Garth Ancier mentioned that Hollyoaks revamped their cast a year ago and that seemed like a good jumping-on point, so I'm guessing they'll start there? (Is that the arrival of the McQueens?)
Apparently, BBCA is aiming to draw the younger Fox and CW viewers who otherwise have to turn to ABC, CBS or NBC for programming at 10PM. It'll be interesting to see if that works... it'll be even more interesting if they can draw a bigger audience than MyNetwork TV's recent attempt at airing daily soap operas in prime time... MNT's audience was small enough that it could be done.
Anyway, after getting a little taste of Hollyoaks from In the City, I'll check this one out.

Lyle Lyle read on a website that they will probably start it off from episodes airing in September, when the local pub The Dog blew up. This is considered a really good starting point because the explosion killed off "unnecessary" characters in order to bring in new ones like the McQueen family.

Does this mean us UK viewers will need to use spoiler tags from now on?
Hollyoaks is just a bit blah at the moment. Why do I care about Clare/Warren/Justin? And the same for Michaela/Sonny? None of the storylines are that great at the moment.
I want Carmel and Aleksandr to hurry up and get back on my screens. And you too, John Paul!
And Will - pure, pure evil.
I don't understand why BBC America would begin with the explosion of The Dog. Yes, it's a fantastic episode but it's not like the US viewers will care about the characters who are dying. But at least you'll get to see a bit of Nicole Owen, who just plain ruled.

Yeah, too much stalling going on at the moment. Like the waiting on Josh finding out Amy's a mum, or for Zoe to finally find out what Hot Evil Will's up to. I've missed the last two days, and barely even noticed.
Who did Nicole Owen play? I semi-watched a couple of years ago for a few months, but that name doesn't register.

Some spoilers/rumours for the Summer (UK):
- Clare Cunningham is to be killed off in a dramatic whodunnit storyline, which will bring back Sean. Among suspects are Max, Warren and Louise.
Although she hasn't really done much evil deeds lately, she's so blah now.
- Will tries to kill Zoe by pushing her off the roof of HCC.
How very Desperate Housewives...
- Warren's sister turns up in the village, and Justin is smitten.
Ugh, SmittenJustin does my head in. As does Justin in any scene he's in.
But the spoiler I'm most excited about?
- Carmel and Aleksandr sleep together, and begin an affair.
Oh, and Nicole Owen was Russ's little sister. Most people thought she was annoying but I thought she was a brilliant character. The best of the young group, though her appearance at Becca's trial was a tad annoying. It's funny because I now think of Russ as a McQueen, I completely forgot when he was a boring Owen.

Looks like the beginning of Craig's realisation that his feelings towards John Paul ain't exactly platonic after all. Which is a shame, because as much as I was rooting for them, now Spike's finally on the scene I like him as well! I cannot be pleased.

Ugh. I really don't like that. I can buy him being somewhat experimental, but him suddenly being full on gay (or even bi) is too much. It feels like a complete character switch purely designed to facilitate a plot, because there has never been any indication that he has homosexual leanings in all the time he's been on the show. Bicurious is as far as he should go.
