(Yahoo says:) Originally Aired: January 22, 2009
A mysterious death draws Sam and Dean to a town full of old-school magicians. Their investigation leads them to Charlie, Jay and Vernon three friends who were famous magicians in their day but have now been replaced by flashier, younger magicians. One of them has made a deal to acquire real magical powers, but the price was extremely high. Sam and Dean must figure out a way to reverse the spell before others are harmed.

This was a great episode, if anvilicious. The actors for Jay, Vernon and Charlie (including John Rubinstein, aka Linwood!) brought it, and I loved the rather touching friendship of Jay, Vernon and Charlie. (To borrows a line from Clueless, old people can be so sweet.) It was refreshing that Charlie was using evil to save his friend, even if he didn't seem too put out about taking innocent lives in order to do it.

I liked Ruby calling Sam and Dean on their "dicking around"--tending to random murders when the apocalypse is at hand--even though I despise Ruby on general principle.

Another great bit was Dean and Sam reflecting on the unlikeliness of their living to see old age.

My favourite part, aside from the adorable bear dominat...or, I guess, was the sly old guys constantly giving Dean and Sam so much grief. Jay escaping from his bonds, Charlie and Vernon easily tricking Dean into going to the dungeon (a little too easily, in my opinion), and the old guys generally making Dean and Sam's lives miserable. I also liked that Jay had to save Dean and Sam, not the other way around.

Sam actually had a personality.

Awesome! I thoroughly approve of geriatric gay magicians in tragic love triangles. Supernatural has broken new ground on narrative television.

If it wasn't for the whole Dean must kill Sam like Jay killed his brother parallel anvil and Sam going along with Kruby, I would have loved this episode. Considering my hatred of the mytharc, this was a steaming pile of dogshit.

I'm not exactly in the mood to mince words here.

Kripke had me at Douche Bag. I was expecting a one-shot that's what I got. I liked it... Oh and look some arc movement!
I approve!

I liked it. It's the first episode since before the catastrophe of episodes 9 and 10 that I really liked and will go back to watch.

I enjoyed the brotherly conversations. That motel scene where Sam asks if they'll make it to old men was really good.

The guest stars were great too, but once again, I felt they took up too much screen time when I really just want more Sam and Dean.

And oh my god can we just get rid of Ruby already? I don't care! Sam! Tell her to go away. Seriously, this character is killing me!

Also, no repercussions of being arrested?

Aren't Sam and Dean still legally dead? How do they get arrested without having their fingerprints taken?

I love Michael Weston! It was great to see him pop up as young Charlie.

That was so depressing. I was getting over getting older, thank you Supernatural. The guys talking about getting old, dying, wanting to die before dying, etc, damn. No happy ending in sight, huh, Kripke? Hee. I wonder if Dean remembered what Rufus told him, he probably scared Dean the hell out. And Bobby's awesome.

What a *great* episode. It didn't drag one second, I loved everything about it.

I don't even want to know the fanfic that was born the second Chief came out dressed in leather and that weird whip thing.

Ruby reminded me of a freaky stage mother telling their kids how amazing they are, how great everything will be once they fulfill their potential. Sam's in... Can't wait to see how that turns out. I'm excited and scared, but at least this plot is going somewhere again. *claps*

How many times did they say douchebag in the first twenty minutes?

I’m smiling. You can’t see me, but I have this grin from ear to ear. Finally, after 3 mediocre/ poor episodes a good, touching, and relevant episode. This writer, Julie Siege, is a keeper.

I was all ready to marry Julie Siege until the end.

Sam! You took the exact wrong message from that! Come on, already! Get rid of that bitch!

Otherwise, I loved it. It felt like The Prestige, which I loved. Sam liking magic tricks when he was little! That's really cute. A friend of mine is getting into doing card tricks and she's so eager about it. I can just see his face.

So what does Sam have to do to take the head off the stupid snake or whatever? Uggh. I don't know if I wanna know.

And oh oh! The new guy from "House!" That hasn't been on in forever! Wasn't he supposed to be in a spin-off for that? I wonder what happened. But I love him!

And NO ROCKY HORROR JOKES!! That made me so sad.

But the characters, the writing, the tricks? All good. I really liked it.

I loved Michael Weston during his brief stint on House, and nice touch having him play a younger version of his father's character. Speaking of which, I loved the old guys (the Chief!) - their close friendship was completely believable, and I found the moral grayness at the end of the episode intriguing - the idea that doing good doesn't always result in happiness for everyone, or even anyone, involved.

I had a particularly fun time tonight because the episode of Bones before this was about a circus.

Also, no repercussions of being arrested?

Yeah, like the first thing the police would NOT do is take Sam and Dean's fingerprints. Or what Moosejaw said. Now we're going to get another fucking FBI manhunt plotline again?

Whatthefuckever, Kripke.

And NO ROCKY HORROR JOKES!! That made me so sad.

I was disappointed by that, too. Heck, at least they could have named the character of Jay as Brad.

I really liked the episode. Obviously the title was made of win, but there was other awesomesauce as well. "What's your safeword?" and Dean's face will have me laughing for days, I swear. And I loved the actor who played Jay to bits. I think he actually outshone the boys in this episode. A+, in my opinion.
