» 7-37: "Top 4 Performances" 2008.05.06

Jason Castro needs to go home, he wants to go home, please for the love of Jeebus send him home. ISTS was absolutely horrific. And MTM? Well I gotta say, I tore Brooke a new one for stopping and starting over 3 freaking times, but I almost wish Jason had stopped and started over just so I wouldn't have the memory of his "doot-doot-la-la-la-la..." in my head.

Not a Syesha fan, but I did not interpret her mention of the Civil Rights movement as a comparison of her struggle on AI. She said she'd never understood what the song was about before she looked it up, and so learning why it was written gave new meaning to the song for her. That's how I took what she said.

Cook has been better, but his second song made up for it.

Archie? SBM was boring, and LMT was sweetly boring and will get the kiddies to vote for him. There's your winner right there, folks. Damn.

Based on the way the judges reacted, you'd think Jason had just shot them. Their reactions seemed incredibly exagerrated.

Ha! Just a perfect way to sum this up.

and ITA agree with everyone appalled that Syesha compared her time in the Idol competition to the Civil Rights movement. I couldn't believe what I was hearing when she did that. I really am trying to like her because she definately has the vocal chops but it's things like this that make me want her gone.

At this point, I want Jason to stay just to say a big FU to the judges. Especially Randy. Douchebag.

If Syesha keeps this up, it could be very interesting next week. I don't think she can beat Cook, but I think she can make it closer than it might seem. The crying seemed genuine, and sort of added to her performance. She did great.

Of course, she has to get through this week first, but I think Jason took care of that for her. I don't think I've ever seen a worse final four performance than those two songs and I've been watching since day 1. He just seems so oblivious to everything around him - I'm not even sure he knows this is a competition.

I usually like Cook but he wasn't good tonight. He screeched through "Hungry Like the Wolf" (and no offense to Simon LeBon but you have 500 songs to choose from and you pick THAT?!?). Then he made "Baba O'Reilly" into "I Don't Want To Miss a Thing". He needed to be angrier for that song - and he should have smashed his guitar like Pete Townshend would have done (or smash Rickey Minor's guitar if he didn't want to destroy his good one). That was a missed opportunity as far as I'm concerned.

Oh, and Archie sounded good tonight. He actually deserved at least a good portion of the praise he got.

First off, I've been lurking accountless for about a year now on Twop, and never before has a single TV issue motivated me to make an account, until Jason Castro.

So I am now completely convinced that this week is his week to go and I am happier than anything, but more to that later.

Second, was it the invasion of Kristy Lee Cook Wardrobe tonight? Randy and Paula were wearing sparkly things. Cook's second performance jacket had glitters, Syesha had a sparkly dress and on the second a bracelet of gold, and even Jason Castro had some Country Music inspired Top. I couldn't pay attention at one point because of it.

Onto the music,

David Cook: Hungry Like The Wolf was, just okay. I agreed with Randy. Definitely , not Cook's best performance. It wasn't bad or anything, but it was okay. And like someone said, the band was a little flat. It started off great, but just kinda..stopped.

Syesha: Proud Mary from her was karaoke. When she mentioned the dancing, I knew right away she was going to do the dance. She did look like she was having fun, and it was no way in the bottom performances.

Jason Castro: I Shot The Sheriff was a complete and utter disaster. Im watching it over now as I am typing this and it's even worse the second time. What happened to Somewhere Over The Rainbow and Hallelujah? At least he's not Brooke. Could you imagine what Brooke would've done this week?

David Archuleta: Stand By Me
was good. I'd have to agree with Randy. Besides creepy licking, gasping, and the odd song choice David has been very very very consistent. I hate him,a dn thing he's terribly overrated, but this was okay. When he sang the 'Beautiful Girls' line, it sounded oddly like Sean Kingston. Oh well. And Randy is overdoing it..again.

David Cook: Baba O'Reilly is iconic? Some oldie rock fans may jump on me for this, but I have never heard this song. And I thought he did great. It was a little pitchy (/Randy) in the middle, but if its meant to be like that, it was fine I guess. And at the end of the song it picked up, I wanted to see more. Glad the judges agreed that it was good too.

Syesha: A Change Is Gonna Come was my favorite. Out of a season of changing favorites (Amanda, then Ramiele, then Kristy, then Carly, and now Syesha (All the girls In realized just now)), I am hoping Syesha stays just this week, knowing she has no chance of winning this season. I completely disagree with Randy. She was amazing. When she started out with the long note, I cringed almost, thinking the entire performance was going to be like that. But after it got really good. I actually focused on the TV for once (hello cleavage!).

Jason: Mr Tambourine Man can be his singout. Maybe he'll forget all the words and I won't have to hear it again. Please please please please make him go home. I wish Simon didn't tell him to pack his suitcase, because it puts his fans into a tizzy.

David Archuleta: Love Me Tender was my third favorite. It was another David Performance for me. I really wish he was more exciting. Last year Melinda was consistent, but also made me want to listen to her. David, consistent but its always the same thing.

So, going home should be Jason.
I know theres only four people, but I can't shake the feeling that they're going to do a shock elimination, as there hasn't been one this season (would Jason count as a shock elim? Please?). Might be one of the Davids. Not Cook. Please.

I can't believe that Syesha compared her attempts to stay on a reality TV show to the civil rights movement! I was hoping that was just a bad dream, but apparently I wasn't the only one who heard it so I guess it really happened. Such lack of perspective should be grounds for automatic disqualification. And it's a real contrast to Jason's obvious attitude of just having fun and not giving a fuck about anything else.

I really want Jason to stay just because I can't wait to see what FU he'll break out next week. Also, while it was really inexcusable for him to forget the words, I think the judges would have a little more credibility on that count if they would have called Archbot on any of his innumerable lyric flubs.

Their attitude really was completely uncalled for. You don't like him? Fine. But don't shit on a kid in front of the entire world. It's that kind of distasteful behavior that makes people want to quit watching this fucking show. They really are that arrogant that they think they can just get away with treating people any old way, aren't they?

But speaking of the 'bot, I was actually pained on his first song. The second was better, I suppose--if you're into being romanced by a 12-year-old.

Cook was passable.

There is a permanent exhibit at the Hall of Fame of "500 Songs that Shaped Rock and Roll" Many of them are by artists in the Hall, but some are not. I think that was the basis of the list they could choose from

Thank you. I really need to stop missing the beginning of the show. I didn't even see why he picked Duran Duran but the fact that he did is enough. I know that may sound silly but I have never really found anyone on this show to be at all in line with my musical taste and while he's a bit too emo for me I have really liked David Cook this season and most of the songs he's picked.

I also like Archuleta though sometimes I get sad when he's on and I'm not entirely sure why. He always seems scared or overwhelmed to me. He has a really nice voice though and I generally like listening to him even though I don't always like his dad's song choices.

As for Castro, I like him and I think he has his little niche and he likes it there and if the judges don't like he doesn't care. Or he's too stoned to care. Jason is the same every week and sometimes the judges love him and sometimes they don't. I think it just depends on how many people they feel are more worthy than him that week. It seems to me that he figures he's near the end and he doesn't expect to win so he'll sing what he wants and have a good time doing it.

I thought Syesha was good tonight but she's never done much for me so I don't really have anything to say about her.

Sweet Jebus, did Syesha really just fucking compare her time on American Idol to the Civil Rights Movement? That is just unacceptable. And then she fucking cries. There are no words to describe the amount of disgust I have for her right now. It doesn't matter how she sang, she needs to go home after that monstrous display of hubris.

What the Archbot did to that Elvis song is a crime against nature.

David Cook - first song was good...loved the way his voice sounded, but nothing spectacular when compared to past performances. 2nd performance was fantastic. My favorite of the night.

Couldn't have said it better myself. I got goosebumps during "Baba O'Reilly". I just wish it had been longer. *crosses fingers that it's the studio cut*

After watching Jason's performances this evening, I heard a question in my head in the voice of Mr. Mackey from South Park:
"Are you on drugs?" *Giggle* (The giggle was from Jason, not from me.)

I think that Cook's Baba O'Reily was brilliant. I almost wish he'd get booted off now so he's not tied to AI nonsense as long. I also would love to see Jason stay just for sheer entertainment value. Seeing Simon's reactions to him made tonight mildly watchable.

I'm annoyed by Syesha's lame attempt to get the pity vote.

Monchichi can just go sing Michael Bolton covers on a float in the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade already. I bet he shits rainbows and butterflies. Gack.

Something I was just thinking- I would be competely pissed to be Brooke or Carly sitting and watching Jason completely screw up both of his songs...as funny as it was, I believe either would have done better. Hell, as would have Michael Johns.

Ok. If I was going to cook up a recipe for a shock boot here is what I would do:

1. Slam Jason so hard after his performance to rile up the pity voters. Then continue to slam him even after the next performer has gone...just in case said voters didn't get the memo the first time. Plus, he has VFTW on his side.

2. Make Syesha cry. Not only will she get the only female/African-American/old-school diva votes, she will also bring in the pity votes.

3. Make sure the praise for Archie is so over the top, that I will basically want to kill myself, or someone else.

4. Give DCook faint praise or no praise for one song, then sort of praise him vaguely for the second.

Bingo...you have David Cook going out 4th. Please just kill me now.

Perfect. It's scary, when was being good/great not enough? I'm so nervous because this is the script I was afraid of. David Cook needed to be able to sing all of Baba O'Reilly to really let loose. Hungry like a Wolf was good and sexy, but apparently not good enough. Still, if worse comes to worse and he goes, "I don't need to fight, to prove I'm right" is a great FU lyric to go out on. I really think if David does go that it will be as close to a self-fulfilling prophecy as possible. I think we all know that David knew what happened...what's his fucking name? Oh yeah--Daughtry.

But, if David does get eliminated tomorrow, it will be worse than S5 because imo--Cook is all there is left to love about the show this season. And, of course--Daughtry had the glory of being a shock sort of. With Cook, it'll just be depressing, deflating, and demoralizing. De-Suck.

Jason Castro gave probably one of the worst performances I've ever heard on Idol this late in the game. And you know what? I don't think he's leaving tomorrow.

Consider yourself jumped on (hee!). Baba O'Riley is one of my favorite Who songs (I was a Roger Daltrey fangirl back in the day). Younger fans may recognize Baba from the CSI franchise (NY, I think). I know *lots* of songs get condensed on AI, but it seems wrong to do this to this song IMO.

I hate them all. The judges, TPTB, the blatant manipulation, the songs, the contestants, everything. I'm a die-hard Cook fan, but for the love of god, at least try to look like you're enjoying yourself up there! Please? Syesha was awesome but she ruined it by being completely shameless and disgusting. Yes, being on American Idol is exactly like the civil rights movement, except for the part where you're fighting to make the world a better place. I am so done with Jason. Loved him from Hallelujah/SotR, felt sorry for him because he was obviously being bus-thrown, but he's been rotten three weeks running now. He should have laid it down tonight, and he flubbed the lyrics instead. Our Godking Archuleta is boring and overpraised and I can't hate him because he's adorable, but I can hate his voice, his songs, his face, his dad, and Randy. Jesus Christ, can this show get any worse? Can we just boot off Syesha, Jason and Our Godking Archuleta and bring back Carly and Michael Johns for the top 3?

Will someone who is more familiar with Bob Marley and that song please weigh in on how Jason did with it?

Disclaimer: I love Marley, but I can't stand "ISTS."

I thought Jason did OK. It wasn't his greatest, but it wasn't the trainwreck the judges said it was. A very servicable Castro song. Don't know if I'll spend the 99 cents on the ITunes download, but it was a lot better than some of tonight's songs. Out of the entire night, I ranked it third.

Major word to those offended by Syesha's comments comparing the Civil Rights Struggle to her own stay on American Idol. If you only lived through the Civil Rights movement. I'm a quarter century older than her, and I barely remember it. But even as a child, I knew it was something much greater than a stupid TV show.

And those damn tears. She won the casual vote on the night that she needed it, but didn't deserve it. I hated Syesha going into tonight...now I despise her.

I know others commented on this, too, but wow, the parallels between Syesha's being in the top 4 and the civil rights movement are aw-inspiring, aren't they?

Also, I'm having difficulty telling who Randy is rooting for. Can someone help me?

GAH. This show makes me nuts!

I've been a fan of this show from the start but I just can't stand Paula and Randy anymore! I find the endless critique of Jason (and let's face it, they would not have liked anything he sang) and ass kissing of David C and David A. Appalling. That being said I think Jason is so down from the pounding he's getting that he just wants to go home. Why should he try when they are clear about who they like before they even sing?

In terms of talent, I think this season has the worst talent. I just don't like David Cook, don't know why, he sounds like a poor man's Daughtry I guess. Syesha is so into herself it takes away from her performance and that dancing tonight was just cheesy. David A is ok for a seventeen year old and I hope he gets some confidence along with maturity within the next few years. Jason was my favorite but he has fallen under the train. Usually I like Simon's comments but find him to be just relentlessly negative which means we as viewers are supposed to not like the singers too. Doesn't AI know that if they keep telling us the singers are awful we will stop watching?
