» David Cook: You Had Me at "Hello"
TWoP Moderator

This is neither a fan club nor a support group, it's a discussion website about television. This thread is about David Cook -- not what's going on with your junk, or lecturing everybody that disagrees with you about how amazing he is. Get a blog. If you are interested in starting a fan club on this thread about how much fun we're all having talking about how great David is, you need to take it somewhere else. This thread is for David. Not for fandom, not for shilling your CafePress merchandise, not for bullying people with different opinions or misusing the FTC/TP or dogpiling on them, not for discussing other boards, and not for fandom grudges. David.

If you want to make a wiki about David, or a list of words that he has once said, go do that. If you want to "squee" and talk about your ovaries, go do that. If you want to wax philosophical about things that have reminded you of David, no matter how strained or ludicrous the connection, or how commonplace those things are, feel free. But do it somewhere else. If your post mentions your age or how silly you feel being so very much in love with David, contains the terms "squee" or "Mavid" or "DC=42," arranges off-board forums, communities, IRL stalking, RPS and shipping, or lists of random crap, reconsider. If your post otherwise attempts to sandbag the thread into a de facto fan forum, you're breaking the rules. Break them in this thread, and you'll be banned from the site. Thanks.

From TWoP Gadget: Just because this thread is in "Old American Idol" and not in the current season -- doesn't mean the rules have changed. This is not a place for a virtual pissing match between fans and non-fans.

Audio of "Potato Girl" by Our Lady Peace. http://www.last.fm/music/Our+Lady+Peace/_/Potato+Girl

The same page also has the audio for "Innocent."

David's voice is waaaaaaaaaaay better than the lead singer (Raine Maida)?

Raine Maida is the lead singer of OLP, as well as the primary songwriter. He's cut back on the weird voice things a lot over the years, but I still say that if you listen to Raine's voice, in light of David's vocal chameleon tendencies, it explains everything about the live version of Innocent.

Granted, I'm from the other side of the state as Cook, but OLP got a ton of airplay on our alternative station in the early/mid-90's. I was working in a pizza restaurant at the time, and the owners listened to the alternative station from the time we opened until long after close every single day. KC has a better alternative station than we do, so I'm sure he probably first found OLP via radio. He did mention at one point seeing OLP live at a KC festival-type show, so that could have been his introduction, too. And also factor in David's age - he graduated high school in '01, so he wasn't totally of the pre-Internet age. In fact, he was in high school during the height of the Napster craze...so yeah, it doesn't strike me as at all odd that a kid from Blue Springs could discover Canadian rock.

ETA: Happiness...Is Not A Fish You Can Catch came out in '99. My brothers are David's age, and I got many great music recommendations via them via mix CDs their swim buddies made, so I'd guess all the other sports guys did the same sorts of things to make those boring bus rides to away games more entertaining.

Raine Maida's voice gets on my nerves. *shudders* No matter how good the music is, I can't listen to it if the voice grates. Thank goodness David never tries to imitate his music idol. I don't hear the similarities in the live version of Innocent either.

I listened only to the Alternative Rock station in New York when I was in my 20's, so I heard OLP's music but I was never a big fan. I think what caused me to seek out all of David's pre-Idol music was the fact that his main influences are from my era. I love all of the Axium and AH stuff. I play it at 11 ;-).

After Kidsday:

Okay, Cook, you can stop trying to break me any day now.

And I would occasionally hear OLP on the radio in my college days. One of my (co-ed) fraternity brothers was kind of obsessed with them, so I remember hearing some of the songs on road trips. Not my cuppa, really, but tolerable enough.

Also brought it over on the off chance that anyone is trying to watch every post-win Fox affiliate interview evah! (Seriously, how many could there have been? 50? I'd suggest that as a new game-- find a MyFox interview from every state!--but wouldn't want anyone to die of Drink!-related alcohol poisoning.)

Hi, that person who is trying to watch every post-win Fox affiliate interview would be ME! Or at least that person was me for the first two days after the finale, then came along Leno and Ellen and Today Show and Early Show and I got sidetracked. I might go back to that "GET EVERY LAST ONE" plan when I have some more free time. On last count, I saved 11 of those. There must be more, right?
As an international fan, I don't get why they don't release info about his radio interviews in some organized fashion... I mean, it's obviously of interest to fans all over the world, not just locally, and those things are damn hard to track down without knowing about them in advance. I looked all over for that Houston interview. So far, no luck.

More evidence that DC=42. I am reading last week's People magazine (sadly, no DC pictures) and the review of the new Coldplay album begins, "On the brilliant, anthemic title track..." All I can think is that maybe the writer has been listening to Cook interviews too.

I was never aware of "AI Extra" during the season -- I only discovered it afterwards from links posted here. Does it actually air on TV (what channel), or is it just a YouTube thing?

It also airs sometimes on a Sunday afternoon in NYC on Channel 9

I would not compain about boots as long as they don't curl up on the end. I. Mean. What. The. Fuck.

C'mon, give the kid a break. He needs the huge elf boots to balance out the Marvel Comic villain head. Otherwise his center of gravity is all off. :-)

Come to think of it, Center of Gravity would make a good album title. Of course, we're talking about a David Cook Joint, so it would have to be Center of Brevity. I kid, I kid.

12thcylon, thanks for the link to Potato Girl. One day I'll get used (maybe) to Raine Maida's vocal affectations. I did enjoy the song; I liked the melody and the beat. I suspect OLP could undergo a bit of a resurgence with Cookie pimping them so much.

3TimesFlammable: More evidence that DC=42. I am reading last week's People magazine (sadly, no DC pictures) and the review of the new Coldplay album begins, "On the brilliant, anthemic title track..." All I can think is that maybe the writer has been listening to Cook interviews too.

Today is a DC=42 day for me too. I went out for a walk at lunch time (taking advantage of a rare sunny day (lately) in flood-prone southern Wisconsin) and when I got back to the building I work in, I got on the elevator and pushed my floor, 7. So on the way up i noticed that every time the elevator got to the next floor, a little chime went off and by the 4th floor I was humming INNOCENT in my head and the chime happened in time with when DC's voice went up in the verse. Sad, I know. DC=42=Borg.

I would have snarfed, had I been drinking anything. You're right, though: DC does seem more than a bit top heavy. Marvel Comic villain/space alien head, broad shoulders, verrrry long waist. The elf boots probably have lead weights in the pointy toes to keep him from falling over. You think maybe his band buddies ever played Tip the Cookie?

I heard LOAP and TWIK back-to-back on the radio on Friday. DC does indeed = 42.

I've been out of town so I haven't been able to comment on stuff, but "I'm a balla, son!" is maybe my new favorite thing ever.

Also, I flove the boots. They'd look great under my bed.

Someone plase explain to me if those Magic Rainbow numbers are good and why. I know nothing about this stuff!

Well, it's all relative. For an Idol coronation song, the airplay numbers for TOML are quite good. There really hasn't been a winners single that got very much airplay at all since Carrie in S4, and Cook continues to slowly climb the charts in several formats which is great. He's doing especially well in both Adult Contemporary and Hot Adult Contemporary. In fact, he's already getting more airplay for a coronation song in both of those formats than any past Idols except Kelly (she peaked at #4 in AC) and Carrie (peaked at #12 in HAC), and he still has a bullet in both formats which means he continues to gain on both charts.

But based on the fact that it has so far failed to pick-up significant adds in Top-40, I would say it is unlikely TOML will become a major radio hit like Kelly Clarkson's "A Moment Like This" was way back in the day. Kelly's song sat at #1 on the Hot-100 for 3 straight weeks (Cook peaked at #3 and fell quickly due to weak radio support), and her song peaked at #8 on Top-40 airplay. Cook is currently sitting just outside the Pop Top-40, which I actually think is really amazing because the song is not particularly suited to that format IMO. But he would need to pick-up adds in some much larger markets and also start to get more spins during drive-time shifts instead of the middle of the night in order to really start to climb on this chart.

I would say that TOML has probably already-surpassed 19E/RCAs expectations for a coronation song, especially compared to Jordin's brick of a single last year. But I think the best we can hope for is for it to be a top-10 AC single and maybe inch-up 10 slots or so on Top-40 before it drops off. At which point we'll be well into the summer and can start gearing-up for a new single and the drop of the much-anticipated debut album.

ETA:

There's a very similar airplay-related discussion going-on over at MJ's, and I snagged this link from a comment over there. Looks like TOML is getting a fair bit of play in bars and clubs, which again I find surprising (but pleasantly so): Ecast BarPulse Showcases Usher and 3 Doors Down Plus Emerging Hit-Makers Duffy and American Idol's David Cook

Ecast BarPulse ranks plays of new music on the Ecast broadband media network, located in over 10,000 bars and nightclubs across the country. Adding more than 1,000 songs each week, Ecast keeps its finger on the pulse of U.S. nightlife and then issues a monthly ranking of the most popular new song plays, nationwide.

1 Love In This Club - Usher
2 Take A Bow - Rihanna
3 Mercy - Duffy
5 It's Not My Time - 3 Doors Down
6 Violet Hill - Coldplay
7 The Time Of My Life - David Cook
8 Moving Mountains - Usher
9 I Will Possess Your Heart - Death Cab for Cutie
10 Game's Pain - The Game

"I'm a balla, son!" is maybe my new favorite thing ever.

I know, hips and hearts! I had to replay that part a lot (well, even more than I replayed the rest of it. His laugh...gah..) I wish the camera had been on him at that point.

Kansas City's MyFox has a new clip up of Andrew talking about mouthing "that's my brother" at the finale.

I think Andrew is getting cuter every day.

And hips and hearts:

Also, I flove the boots. They'd look great under my bed.

Priceless.
