» The Poseidon Adventure: cheese served upside down

I've looked and looked for a thread on this. I cannot believe there isn't one.

I'm a huge fan of the orginal, so I'm hoping this one is good.

I'm counting on something as spectacularly bad as Category 7. Been looking forward to this all week!

I'm also taping it for the inevitable comparison to Wolfgang Peterson's theatrical version that comes out next year. I bet WP has the Shelley Winters character do a ghostly voiceover a la Diane Lane's fine piece of work in Perfect Storm.

WAIT, there is going to be a theatrical version? I'm so there.

I'm not sure how I feel about the terrorist's being responsible for the boat capsizing, but I guess they felt the need to update it.

I don't really understand the terrorism angle, but...who cares? It's got Adam Baldwin, I'm there.

Yep, skeezix.

A big Wolfgang Petersen theatrical project.
It's supposed to be nothing like the original (except the capsizing) and much more violent.

Topic: I love how they pulled some of the character's lines word-for-word from the original. It was a nice touch.
Unfortunately, the capsizing scenes were not as exciting as the original and that is a huge shame.

The capsizing was weak.

What does it say when the original sfx are exceedingly better than the cgi effects of today? The acting is worse than the original. The cheese factor isn't even enjoyable. They ruined Ms Rosen; the best character in the whole damn movie!

They should've left well enough alone. NOONE does disaster like the Master of Disaster Irwin Allen (RIP)

Well, that was disappointing.

What the heck was up with the douch-y father who jumped ship BEFORE his children. Way to be an asshole Dad. I guess he showed his cards early on by banging the massuse.

Also apparently they make a consumer version of a camcorder that can withstand being submerged in water.

How the heck did group 2 of survivors catch up with the orginal group?

Why was walking over that catwalk supposed to be dangerous? It wasn't like it was a tiny beam- it was an upside down catwalk.

Man, that suuuuuucked. I only put up with it for Adam.

And why the hell did they have to walk standing up over the catwalk. They could have crawled.

The addition of the command center scenes cracked me up. All those rows of people at long tables behind the admiral and the UK rep - it looked like PBS during a pledge drive. I kept waiting for the two up front to start hawking mugs and tote bags.

Somehow, somehow, that was worse than Category 7. I don't know how, but I think Steve Guttenburg played a part in it.

That sucked so hard.
I have an idea. Let's blow an escape hole in the other side of the ship.
Honestly, I wasn't expecting anything amazing, but I wanted something good.
The factual errors kept pulling me out of this version and they were more obvious than the problems with 1972 Poseidon Adventure.
And why the hell did they have to walk standing up over the catwalk. They could have crawled.

cutecouple, wouldn't the fire burning beneath the catwalk (for an hour, or more) have made it incredibly hot to the touch.
Shoshanna and Dr. Pedophile...er...Ballard shouldn't have been able to hold on for even a second. Right?

Anyway, the most annoying thing with any version of this movie is the stupid passengers.
Why didn't the people in the ballroom swim or float with the rising water and then escape the way the other groups went?
(I had the same problem with the original.)

Edited: To remove harshness.

Yep. Jayne is my favorite character from Firefly, so I was pretty much watching just to see Adam. At least he lived.

Was I suppose to hate Guttenberg's character? Because I did. I also felt kind of cheated when they solved the affair by simply killing off the mistress. Cheap. Actually, I kind of wanted the whole family to drown.

What has become of Rutger Hauer and Bryan Brown? Is this the best they can get these days? With this and Spring Break Shark Attack, Bryan probably better talk with his agent.

Loved how the writers found way to get the pop singer to strip to her underwear. I guess they needed something to keep all the teenage boy viewers interested.
