I say we make a list of shows we predict will not survive to a second CW season (including shows like GG that are in their last ever), send it to the execs now, and then wait to see how many we correctly picked. Once that happens, we send a follow-up list with an "I told ya so!" message attached. Twelve? Yes I'm twelve, which is what happens when people make stupid decisions.

ETA: of all the posts to be at the top of the page. I am SO sorry, guys.

Is this b/c there are more pre-teens/teens and less adults/family watching OTH? Also, if this is the case, why is 7th Heaven coming back? The show has fanatics?

My bit of speculation is that while the audience for shows like OTH, VM, Lost, House, etc. watch other shows (making it a little harder for any show to cement viewership due to competition), the people who watch 7th Circle of Hell most likely watch that show exclusively. Think about it: these are probably the same people who participate in American Family Association boycots and the like. They're the same 5M who argued that EW wasn't really a family drama because Amy and Ephram decided to have premarital sex.

Hm, interesting point. The ironic thing is there was a lot of premartial sex going on at 7th Heaven.

I think Irv's death will probably be even sadder now that it's the series finale.

I wonder how much someone got paid to design that logo (and I use the term logo loosely). To me, it goes from looking like some weird plug, an aerial view of a mowed lawn, a race course from Pole Position, to a coil that makes me want to wring someone's neck.

So, topic. I also hope they continue to dog Dawn about "Why did you ax Everwood?" And I still want to blame Ashton Kutcher's Beauty and The Geek slightly for taking Everwood off last season and this season. I can't stand the fact that they tend not to air reruns because 'fresh reality programming' does better, if that's true. That's what I hear, anyway.

And lastly, that thing about the Crappy Worthless network's vying for white girls who shop? Just...gah. I am curious to know which advertisers currently sponsor the shows they're keeping. I hope they're all for big expensive things that teenyboppers can't buy.

This sucks. Was I prepared to hear this? Of course part of me hoped, but after Joan of Arcadia and knowing that the same idiot had a huge part in Everwood's fate, I was preparing myself. Plus, and I get this one because of the ratings and stuff more than JOA, there was the whole American Dreams thing too. And honestly, it isn't even the fact that it has been cancelled that kills me. But Les Moonves may be the most clueless television person ever.

Its the fact that 7th Heaven (which is WAY over) was brought back from the dead. Its the fact that One Tree Hill is still on, even though it is already gone way downhill and has 1/3 less viewers. Its the fact that it doesn't make any sense to cancel EW when these shows have less viewers and less potential are staying, unless they really want their network to flop.

The only good thing that I can be semi-happy about is that we will get a non-cliffhangerish series finale. It won't ever be right, because its still too early for it to be dead, yet its better than leaving us completely hanging (ala JOA).... And it will be recapped.

CW is already doomed. I don't even know how long that network is really going to be able to last before going bankrupt with such bad decisions.

I am outraged at the ignorance exhibited by the new CW (Does the "C" stand for Crap?) in the cancellation of EVERWOOD. One of the best shows on TV. GG is the only other show that I ever watched on either of the two previous networks and it is going into its final season. Total dismay! Dawn, your network is going down the toilet.

The only thing I can think is: it's not the raw numbers, it's the demographics. Maybe the people who watch Everwood are known to be less influenced by ads. And, honestly, we couldn't even keep the TWoP forums busy enough to support the recapping, so whoever we are, maybe we are not the most advertiser-friendly group?

Also, I guess even if 7th Heaven is done and done-er, they are trying to generate a spinoff. That show gets numbers, and was only losing money because the cast was large and had been on the air long enough to be pulling big salaries. A new but similar show would cost less and I guess they think they can get the same numbers at less expense that way.

I disagree with the decision because I love Everwood, and I'd heard Everwood was in fact making money, and to me it is not important to make the maximum profit possible, as long as you make enough to keep doing something you love. But TV doesn't seem to operate on the "enough" theory, or the execs at The CW just didn't love Everwood and preferred the "as much as possible" approach.

When they cancelled JoA, everyone scoffed at their stupidity, but the Boob Whisperer does in fact get more viewers and I bet it costs less to produce. So, more profit.

I don't like it but this is the only explanation I can think of.

Here's Utah's reaction to Everwood ending. A producer is quoted in this Salt Lake Tribune article.

, what's Virginia's blog? Did you post a link and I missed it?

Also somewhat interesting is the Wilmington Star's piece on OTH renewal, which it credits to the sponsorships and clothing line.

I listened to the TV Guide podcast interview with Gregory Smith. (this is not a plot spoiler, just filming process for final episode but just to be on the safe side, since similar comments have been covered): He said only a few scenes are different in the series finale vs. season finale. So, I don't know how seriesfinaleish it will feel. He also said he's happy with how Ephram turned out and has grown over four years.

Also, he said no one really wanted to say goodbye to each other at the end of filming. I hope they can at least all get together for a final party or something.

ETA I wish the network, instead of giving VM a full 22 episode pick up, was split it up- 13 episodes for Everwood and for VM. I like 13 episode seasons, a lot of great cable shows have that format, all consecutive new episodes.

I like that idea, too.

ETA: Something new! From Maureen Ryan at the Chicago Tribune, who apparently heard from Berlanti.

http://featuresblogs.chicagotribune.com/en...r.html#comments

In a brief e-mail, "Everwood" creator had this to say about the end of "Everwood" (and by the way, I'd asked him if he'd shop the show elsewhere, but that doesn't sound like it's going to happen):

"We're all profoundly sad... but at the same time amazingly grateful we got to be a part of something so special. I would personally like to thank all of the amazing fans and critics that have supported the show (yes, I'm talking about you, Television Without Pity) and connected with it the same way we did. You guys were the reason we were on so long to begin with. Andy Brown, Ephram, Delia, the Abbotts, Nina, Edna, Irv and all the other folks of Everwood that we got to watch grow and change, suffer and soar -- they're not characters, they're us. And they will live on in our hearts and in syndication forever. I can only hope in my lifetime I get to be a part of something again that touches people in the same way. Until then... enjoy the last few episodes. And thank you guys so much for spending four years in Everwood."

why, why, why not shop it elsewhere? We need to find out Greg Berlanti's email address and change his mind. Greg, thanks for the mention, and from a fellow Wildcat, if you're reading this, my sincere thanks for this wonderful show, and we'd love to hear from you personally...

See, I would keep VM at 22 episodes, but shorten OTH or 7H (or both, preferably) in favor of a spring EW. Shorten the crap, lengthen the quality is my motto.

Don't make me cry Berlanti! I am so sad.

  • I feel like the CW execs renewed OTH and 7th Heaven just to stick it to us, even though intellectually I know they didn't. The only thing they could have done to piss me off some more is if they revived Summerland.
  • I'm pissed that I won't get to see that awesome season 5 that Berlanti pitched to Dawn Ostroff. I'm sad that Berlanti said that he would come back to the helm to replace Mimoun, who had other projects, only to be rejected by the new network.
  • I'm pissed about the early deal with ABC Family to air Everwood in syndication, yet an agreement to delay/start the reruns in late 2006!
  • I'm pissed that we won't get a "return to the beginnings of Everwood" pilot episode showing.
Here's a flashback to the beginnings of Everwood when there was so much hope and positivity. A clip from the WB's 2002 upfronts. The Everwood part starts around 5:48 into the clip.

I don't know why I keep coming back here. I keep hoping the news will be different or something, but it isn't. Maybe I'm hoping for an explanation that will make sense as to why they cancelled Everwood, but so far, I don't get it. Well-received by critics, good ratings- it's just mind-boggling.

Only plus is that we get a recap. Sigh.
