Put it all together, and I can easily picture Sawyer becoming a casualty near the end of this season.
Yes, but a couple of months ago Sayid was groomed as second most likely to die, and I don't think that's going to happen. A bunch of people on Lost-media. com posted that Locke was going to die based on the "facts" (stuff that Kristen and Ausiello said) and that didn't happen. People speculate all the time about Claire and Charlie, but that isn't going away any time soon. Sawyer's a fan favorite and he has established relationships with the primary castaways, and I would argue that his tailside scenes with Ana Lucia have remained well-balanced with Michael's angst, if not overpowering it.
As far as castaways go, they're seperated into tiers, IMO.
First tier: Island Leaders. Jack, Locke, and Kate. Jack and Locke are the most important people aomng the castaways and the second season has focused mostly on them and their battles over the hatch. Kate is positioned as a leader whether we like it or not.
Second tier: Fan favorites. This is Hurley, Sawyer, and Charlie. They're not essential to the plot, nor are they leaders. But they are enormously popular and will stick around as long as they have big followings.
Third tier: Supporting Characters That Are Useful To The Plot. I place Claire, Sayid,
Walt, and possibly Sun here. Claire's important because of her baby, her connection to the Island mythology (Danielle/Others) and her relationship to Charlie. Sayid is important because of his technical proficiency. Walt is important because of his powers and his connection to The Others. Sun may go in this category because of her medicinal powers. They'll stick around for now, but may die once they've outlived their usefulness.
Fourth tier: Supporting Characters With Established Relationships. The six characters who already had pre-established relationships with each other go here.
Because of those relationships, they were reluctant to seek relationships with other people on the island. We have Boone (dead), Shannon (soon to be dead),
Sun (relationship with Kate and Jack but isolated from most of the castaways for the majority of the time she's been there), Jin (isolated from everyone except Michael and Sun), and Michael (isolated from everyone except Jin and Walt, whose creepiness will probably still be a factor long after Michael dies).
It's kind of weird that the two fourth-tier characters who branched out the msot socially are the ones who got wacked. Boone made a connection with Locke, but he was merely Locke's puppet. Shannen has a connection with Sayid, but he's not terribly important in the scheme of things and their relationship isn't well-explored.
Jin and Michael have connected, but the fact that they're both so low on the totem poldoesn't bode well. And Sun has a connection with both Sun and Jack, but is still pretty isolated.
I think the Jin/Michael relationship is one of my favorite relationships on the show.
They're both people who wanted nothing more than to keep to themselves and get off the island. Michael kind of got drawn into the situation with Sun, and felt protective of her and apprehensive of Jin. All comes out into the open and he and Jin start working together and become friends, even though Jin doesn't speak a word of English. Now Jin seems as anxious to help Michael find Walt as he is to get back to his own wife. The whole thing is a lot more interesting than anything Ana Lucia will ever be a part of.
