I really need new books to read, but my attention span is shot to hell at the moment, which means it's time for some literary cotton candy. So, has anyone read any of the tie-in novels? Are they worth bothering with?

I've got the Tin Man miniseries on as background noise, and I just bothered to notice the new Stargate:Atlantis promo. Carson was in it! I really hope I'm not getting my hopes up for nothing.

I think the tie-ins are good. And Carson's still around, which is always a plus.

I wasn't even aware that there were tie-ins, I'll have to look for those (I've been satisfying my need for SGA with lashings of fic & incidentally there are many novella length pieces out there).

Re the promos, there were several, one of my fav's was the Teal'c vs Ronon one. This & others can be seen here New SGA promos if you missed them.

Ooh, have you read "Written by the Victors"? Seriously, one of the top 3 fics I've ever read in any fandom.

Speaking of fic, I'm always on the look out for more recommendations. If you have any, please rec away! (Out of the blue yesterday, I decided I'd start compiling a list of stuff here, if anyone's interested.)

And speaking of the Teal'c v. Ronon thing I was watching some interview with Jason M. on SciFi.com and it showed some clips of that. I don't know how I feel about it. On the one hand, yay Ronon ep! On the other, it seems like they brought in Teal'c to be all "oh, see how wise Teal'c is and how sloppy and overemotional Ronon is," which I don't like at all. I'm reserving judgement until I actually see the ep, but I really hope the Atlantis crew is like "Yeah, thanks, but we like Ronon the way he is."

If you haven't already seen it, there is a marvelous video by zulu that goes along with "Written by the Victors". In fact there is an entire Victor 'Verse page of artwork and additional stories to accompany the original story.

Oh hells yeah! I've been checking Speranza's LJ obsessively to catch any new Victor 'Verse tie-ins. It's all so amazing, the kind of stuff people are coming up with. Aside from Zulu's awesome vid, I think my favorite is from the people who translated "I Walk the Line" into Skani and then sang it! And the academic commentary! Hee!

Hi, Raksha, I have read Victors, but haven't seen the other 'verse pieces, I definitely need to check out zulu's vid.

You might also like Auburn's fic, all here Auburn's SGA fic. All very readable, I'm particularly fond of the Taste of Apples & Sacrificial Drift & In The City of Seven Walls. I'm about to tackle her latest fic Judas Doesn't Answer, 70,000 odd words of SG-1/SGA cross-over.

On the subject of vids, this is my latest favorite, Four Years Amazingly edited McShep.

For those of you who like SGA fic and are interested in more "gen" storylines, Domenika Marzione has written some of the best stuff out there. She's created an entire original canon universe out of the Marines and the characters in "Little Tripoli" and the main characters are key components to some of the most original and amazing stuff I've read across any fandom. Her military discussions (and tone) are spot on (and I say that as the child of an army officer) and some of her epics are just mind-blowingly well written.

She also wrote a cross over epic based on the premise that the Ori gain control of Earth and it's chilling.

Really, I think her stuff is the best in SGA for non-romance, non-fluff, adventure and character-driven stories.

Plus, her discussions about Atlantis and John's relationship to it are really, really interesting.

Okay, pimping is over.

David Hewlett looks quite handsome with a beard. I wonder if they'll let him keep it.
Oh, and according to Mallozzi, the title of one season 5 episode will be "Broken Ties". Titles don't need spoiler tags, do they? I'll go ahead and hide it...just in case.

Definitely seconding the Domenika Marzione rec. A lot of her characters are original, but so well-drawn I find myself trying to spot them in the background when watching episodes. Of the canon characters she concentrates most closely on Major Lorne, and her version is indistinguishable in my mind from the one Kavan Smith is playing onscreen.

I don't think she writes in this fandom anymore, but if you like the homoerotic subtexty side of things I'd highly recommend Shallot's SGA stories.

I love her boys... And I love the idea that what she writes is actually going on offscreen (particularly the great "War Games" kind of exercises and the adventures of the Lieutenants in the care of Lorne's team)... And The Jenny Code, Just Like the Richard Gere Movie, and The Pegasus Galaxy Presents: George Romero's Alice in Wonderland establish such amazing personal canon (and such believable personal canon), that I can't watch the actual show without including it in my universe of characters...

And, the concept that John is Atlantis's favorite son is just so subtly done, I love it.

In lieu of what I'm not getting from Show, this works very, very well.

Me too, it really does suit him.

If TPTB's trend of ripping off their own SG1 stories and rewriting them for SGA continues into season 5, I'd wager that Broken Ties is going to be a ripoff of The Ties that Bind. ;)
