My God, this was rank. The only highlight was George. I love George. Wow, do I love George. George is like a shining, beautiful light in the dark, dank, depressing bottomless pit that is this year's competition.
Listening to all these covers made me realize just how much I love Elton John, and how practically NO ONE should ever be allowed to cover his and Bernie's songs, because very few people can do them justice.
Fantasia Barrino :: Something About The Way You Look Tonight I'm just not a Fantasia fan. She did well, though, especially compared to the rest of the contestants. But her constant turning her back to the audience annoys the piss out of me. Hel-lo, you're closing off the audience that way. And could you PLEASE stop ending every single song with "yeah, yeah, yeah, yeeeeahhhh?" 7 out of 10.
Jon Peter Lewis :: Rocket Man I didn't HATE this performance, not like I hated some of the others. That doesn't mean I liked it, by any means. He doesn't deserve to be in this competition, but his voice doesn't annoy the holy hell out of me, at least. 4 out of 10.
Jasmine Trias :: Don't Let The Sun Go Down On Me I hate Jasmine. HATE. And this sucked. It's actually not one of my fave Elton songs, but still, it deserves much better treatment than this shit. And Randy and Paula actually had semi-lucid and useful commentary afterwards? Is it the apocalypse already? 5.5 out of 10.
John Stevens :: Crocodile Rock Jesus H. Roman on a crutch. Granted, I could barely hear him singing over my husband's giggling fit, but what I heard was quite possibly the worst cover I've ever heard in my life. Well, OK...maybe not the worst - I have heard a cover of "Come On Eileen" in a karaoke bar performed by seven drunk people who'd never met each other before that night and who were each performing in a different key (and, at times, a different song). But it's definitely the second worst. -1,000,000 out of 10.
Camile Velasco :: Goodbye Yellow Brick Road This wasn't as bad as she's been before. Nice upper register. Crappy lower register. She needs to go home, but at least it didn't make me want to puncture my eardrums, like TeenMartin's butchering of "Crocodile Rock." 5 out of 10.
George Huff :: Take Me To the Pilot I love George with all my heart. He was amazing. ESPECIALLY when compared to the rest of the contestants...but he would have been great anyway. Damn. 10 out of 10. No, really.
Diana Degarmo :: I'm Still Standing Is she sick? I still love Diana's voice, but she just does not have the emotion behind it that she needs. This is supposed to be a defiant, emotional song. And quit with the "c'mons" already. 7 out of 10.
Latoya London :: Someone Saved My Life Tonight One of my favorite Elton tunes. She did a really good job with it. As some posters have already pointed out, she has the knack of knowing when she's hit a wrong note and then quickly moving off of that note. Good job. 7.5 out of 10.
Jennifer Hudson :: Circle of Life I hate Jennifer. No, really. I HATE her. Almost as much as I hate Jasmine. And I hate this song, too. So I wasn't really paying all that much attention to her. It was OK, I guess. Mr. wghedges said it sounded better than Elton's version. Eh. 8 out of 10.
Top 3: George, Latoya, Jennifer Bottom 3: John S., JPL, Camile
My predictions for American's bottom 3: John S., Camile, Diana (with John S. leaving)
Also, could someone tell me what was yelled out from the audience during Simon's commentary after John's performance? I was too busy giving my hubby the Heimlich after he choked from laughing at Simon's "Plan 9" reference, and I missed it.
