I'm still scratching my head over the judges' kudos for Jennifer's performance. Yes, she was on-key and did an ok job, but she oversings every song she performs, IMO.
The worst for me was definitely Camile. Oh, man. I'm not a huge Elton fan, but GYBR is one of his songs that I really like. She butchered it. I mean, not as in the way a butcher cuts up a ham, but in the way that Leatherface butchered his victims. The song was begging for its life, and she was unmerciful. Gah. And what, may I ask, is the deal with her bopping back and forth whenever she sings? It's like the female version of that spraddle-legged thing Justin Guarini used to do. Just awful... she's gotta go.
I feel bad for LaToya, because of just what many of you have already said. She's too bland, and while she's a great singer, I forget about her unless she's actually performing. About mid-way through the show last night, I was trying to think of who was left to perform. I could come up with George, Jennifer, and DiBot's names, but not LaToya.
Well, music is certainly subjective. If Jasmine tried to so something different to make it her own, I don't think she did a very good job of it. It sounded like that she started a few sustained notes under pitch, but she would correct them a second or two later. As far as judging their pitch, Paula and Randy seem more qualified to judge it than Simon since both of them have been performers. It's easier for them to tell whether they were off pitch-wise or not, but I was a tad shocked to hear Randy tell Jasmine about "supporting more" and the such. Quite honestly, if he was that educated on the mechanics of singing, then he'd have some of his own albums out, instead of just producer credits or being a bass player in a band.
Yeah, but I've known people who can tell you how to sing, but that didn't have the greatest voice themselves. Perhaps that's the camp Randy is in.
RE: Jasmine, tho, I actually agreed with Randy and Paula for once. Basically, Paula told her that she can't actually sing unless she's adding tons of melisma, which is what I've been telling Mom Nutjob about Jasmine since the beginning of the competition. She could probably do with some vocal coaching to help her with that, and then she'll be great.
