On tonight's 11 pm local news (NBC affiliate in Erie, PA), during a report about a mobile home fire: "her and her daughter" (or sister...) - in this case, she should've said, "she and her daughter...". Maybe I'm too picky. Another pet peeve: local reporters use "they" when they reference a single subject or pronoun (see example below - I know, this seems to be accepted today).

As long as I'm picking on Erie, how often does someone drive his or her <not their!> car into a business or residence in yourcommunity? This seems to happen frequently in this area.

I've also noticed that the local newspaper and local news programs cover specific allegations about <alleged> child predators to a greater degree than they did even five years ago. Maybe information is more available today, these crimes are committed more frequently, and/or people are more likely to discuss these issues today. Oh, and they must face charges more often today: a few weeks ago, a 30-year-old [female] high school teacher was convicted of having had sex with a then-16-year-old boy, and the judge noted that this had been the fifth such case he'd seen in six months.

And now for something completely different... Steve Doocy (fellow KU grad) of Fox News was once a host for a local PM Magazine in Kansas City in the 1980s. Reporter Maria Hinojosa (PBS's NOW and NPR) was a Kansas City local news reporter back then, too (I think - can't find on Google).

Sacramentoans - do you listen to Christine Craft ("progressive talk radio" there)? What do you think? She was an anchor at the ABC affiliate in Kansas City in the 1980s, was demoted, sued the station, and lost her gender discrimination suit (although a jury had awarded her damages). She wrote a book about these experiences, Too Old, Too Ugly, Not Deferential to Men (or something like that title).

WTKR in Hampton Roads, VA is the worst channel.ever. Their newscast tonight? Coverage of this outdoor military festival. No news my friends, it was all festival coverage, oh and the weather. They spent five minutes just showing live footage of this military helicopter with these like, paratroopers hanging off of it.

Where were these teachers when I was in school?

Here to report on the severe air pollution warning is our reporter who is standing outside in the hazy air. Now over to our weather forecaster who is also standing outside.

Anybody on the thread from Baltimore? Vic Carter of Ch. 13 is absolutely terrible imho. The guy stumbles his way through every newscast. I hate how Ch. 13 is still coasting off of the glory days of Jerry Turner and Al Sanders. Both of them were great anchormen but Jerry's been dead for almost twenty years and Al's been gone for nearly ten years. (Both died from esophogeal cancer, smoking in the newsroom was part of the culture I guess.) Baltimore's a funny town, they don't like newbies all that much, but if you can stay on the air for a couple of years they'll love you forever. I also get DC's stations over the air and they are uniformly dreadful.

I love Linda Church from The CW 11 (NYC). She's the meteorologist and just has this energy around her that draws me in. Totally not in a creepy way, though. From the same station, Jill Nicolini is the traffic correspondent. Every day she feels the need to CONSTANTLY remind us that the alternate side parking rules are in effect "city-wide." ASIFWEDON'TKNOW. Though, other than that, she seems pretty cool. But, seriously, this is the only local news show I can stand to watch.

Oh God, Jill Nicolini. I'm sorry, but I cannot look at her without thinking "you voluntarily participated (and made it to the finals of) Married by America." Despite all the famewhoring she has attempted (reality stint, posing for Playboy) she's still doing the traffic reports. Awesome.

For local news, I'm all about my Pat Kiernan (yes, the host of the World Series of Pop Culture) and NY1. Every morning he does "In the Papers", where he holds up each of the local papers and proceeds to go through them highlighting articles (a concept which was spoofed on How I Met Your Mother). It is so cheesetastically awesome, I cannot possibly do it justice.

From Fox News 5 in Washington, DC the other day: A former Redskin was injured in a motorcycle accident. Fox's reporter did a breathless, dramatic stand-up in front of the hospital where the player was taken with non-life threatening injuries. Those injuries, according to the reporter, were "a broken arm and three broken legs".

Poor Ray Brewer (WMUR, NH.) He always has far to much rouge on, and he's always standing in some undignified and very uncomfortable looking spot. My fav? Kevin Flynn, hands-down. Hilarious, and always good on the dreadful Chronicle. I also agree with you Espie, that Chris Thomas is great at the improv.

Things are getting out of hand -- on NBC4 News here in the D.C. area, Doreen Gentzler reported that the local government in Leesburg, VA is considering banning drive-thru banks and restaurants, in order to encourage people to walk more.

Micromanagement, much? Don't you people have more important issues that need your attention?

We have a breaking scandal in Chicago. You'll notice a few grammatical errors here and there in the article and memo. I can't wait to read the letters to the editor about this one. I'll miss Amy and her myriad of hats while covering our snowstorms and other crises.

Well, journalistically speaking, I guess there are ethical lines she crossed, but frankly I don't want to live in a world where the gorgeous blond news reporter is excoriated for wearing a bikini. What is the world coming to?!

WTKR is back to annoying the crap out of everybody in Hampton Roads by devoting 10 minutes to their 6 p.m. newscast about Michael Vick (due to all his Virginia connections).

I've been watching the footage about the helicopters that crashed in Phoenix, AZ, today, and it just breaks my heart.

I wonder how something like that happens? It's so tragic.

With all due respect to the families of those who died in the accident, the reason things like that happen is the viewing public's appetite for watching scum attempt to escape from police in automobiles (think eye candy), and news directors and broadcasters cashing in (literally) on satisfying that appetite. Supply and demand, just commerce. Surprised it doesn't happen more often...

It's not like they were doing anything particularly noble, or noteworthy for that matter. If it were a transplant team, like recent events in Lake Michigan, if they were involved in an industrial accident in search of some process to help the environment, or mixed up in some relief effort to assist starving people in a third-world country it would be tragic. These folks were trying to get more eyeballs to watch thier station so the station would be able to charge more to the advertisers for said eyeballs. It's unfourtunate that it cost them thier lives but sometimes bad things happen chasing a buck.
