You know, I tried to read that a few days ago. The first chapter just wasn't happening for me, possibly because I haven't seen IWTB yet. But after reading your recs I thought I'd give it another shot. And holy cow. I'm glad I did. Once the exposition is done with the story is superb,

Actually, I have a question for those of you who read Machines of freedom. I'll black it out because it's spoilerific, though.

So, the way I understood it, in the universe FutureSadie/Casey comes from, both Mulder and Scully died in the commando room (I'm a bit shaky on Scully here, but somehow I don't think Sadie/Casey would have turned out as she did with Scully still around. Which is why I think the "I don't remember you." is a plural "you"), and Will during the Helicopter raid chez Van de Kamp. Thus leaving Sadie in the care of Ma Scully or Bill or whoever. (the catholic school bit fits into that nicely)

What do you guys think?

Gryff, I'm pretty sure Scully didn't die - Casey/Sadie could definitely still have turned out rebellious and a bit messed up from missing "only" one parent. I had thought on rereading that it was grown-up Casey's scenes with Mulder that were the most poignant. I hadn't even thought if it your way - but I wouldn't say I'm totally sure of mine, now. Interesting question.

Mack, I know, right? I wasn't quite sure about it myself the first time around, so I re-read and this bit: "You weren't prepared," (Casey) said quietly."When Bill blew out the software, and you--compensated--you didn't know what the effects were. Neither of you did.", makes me lean towards both of them dying. Though I'm probably over-reaching.

But yeah, same here. Which is why I'd love to hear you guys' opinions.

I also thought that both Mulder and Scully died. Mulder asks Casey if he died and she responds by saying - "When Bill blew out the software, and you--compensated--you didn't know what the effects were. Neither of you did." - The 'neither of you' bit makes me think both died. But I wonder if it's intentionally ambiguous.

Huh. Great theory Gryff. That didn't even occur to me, but you're right it makes sense.

Although - I kind of sensed some hostility from Casey toward Scully that I didn't really understand (and didn't think about again when I was finished reading and was sitting here with my jaw hanging open) so it's possible that Mulder's death caused Scully to pretty much lose it and she was never much of a mother to Sadie/Casey after that, and Sadie grew up feeling unloved and bitter. That's a depressing thought but man, it would fit. Casey referred to her younger self as "Sadie Mulder" when Mulder asked her why she was going by Casey, and there was mention made of how odd it was that she was sent off to a Catholic school.

Or - egads - what if Mulder and William both died in the original battle? As in, the guys came to capture William and did kill the elder Van de Kamps but with Will's ability to read minds/manipulate things/whatever he was able to get himself to the compound to help, but without Casey's bond he died too. I can't think of anything that would shatter Scully more fully than losing both of her men there together.

Has anyone read the other of Amal's works that fit within this universe? Do they give any background/clues to the characters in this story?

Please don't use spoiler tags here, guys. They're really only for TV (and in this case, movies) that haven't aired. If you're talking about a certain piece of fanfic, its obvious to posters coming in here to read that they may be spoiled for that story. If you want to start your posts with something like "About to discuss plot details of ___:" that's fine. But seeing an entire page of posts that are all blacked out is a little much. Thanks!

Nope, Taryn, her other stories in that universe don't offer any clues (or... at least not obvious ones...). Interesting discussion, though!

And (SPOILERS FOR THE FIC BELOW):

I already thought William had died, in the raid, prior to Sadie/Casey's intervention, but I like your theory, Taryn. Poor Scully!

I have two recommendations that I've enjoyed recently...

"Husband, Pennsylvania, 9:43 p.m." by Emma Brightman - missing scene from Leonard Betts, Mulder and Scully talk while on a stakeout - PG

Bed by onpaperfirst - missing scene from Anasazi, Scully helps Mulder into bed after his father is shot - not rated but I'd say it is PG as well

I'm liking a lot of those Brightman fics. Cells was particularly scrumptious.

Checking out some of the Emma Brightman fics myself on this slow Friday night. Low Tide was especially good, a little angsty in a quietly sad way, but good.

Thanks for recommending Cells, DaynaPhile. I really liked it. It was sweet and a little awkward (in a good way).

A long time ago someone posted that their guilty fic pleasure was sick fic. Who was that? Are you still here? Would you be interested in reading a little scene snippet? The story goes nowhere, nothing is developed, it's just a smidgen of something that popped into my head.

What is sick fic?

Fic where the main plot deals with one of the main characters being ill(/injured?) and the other one is taking care of him/her.

(Feel free to elaborate, anyone, if I've left something out, but I think that's what it is.)
