» Don't Mess With Metallicar: The '67 Impala
Fanatic

It could be okay, Caffiene Kitty. It could be Mary's car!

God I hope so. Or the Impala's in the shop and he's got a loaner from somewhere. Or it's frigging Missouri's car. Or that's some random other person's car and the Impala's actually parked out of sight. I don't care. I want it officially retconned now.

The Impala was quite blatantly in the Pilot, as the place where John gathered the boys after Mary died and their lives went up in flames and everything changed. It is not an unimportant detail in any conceivable way. *deleting a large rant now, because I try not to use words like that in public venues*

For them to make a continuity error that huge in the first three pages... *grits teeth*

Well, I will say this. I knew I loved the car, but I never realized how enraged I could feel over it getting messed with in print. I want to hunt down the artist and smack them. And then smack whoever was continuity checking from the series. And then smack Kripke in case this is some deliberate marketing ploy to get talk going about the damned comic.

I'm nauseated now. I'm going. I have had way too bad a week for this to be the capper. Sorry for ranting.

It has to be Mary's car. The lack of seatbelts in Metallicar has been discussed before, and the comic has a car seat for baby Sam. It would have been difficult to put a car seat in Metallicar, not to mention Dean possibly getting hurt. John co-owned a garage so it makes plenty of sense for him to keep his fabulous car and for Mary to drive a safer, family friendly car. I used to work at a garage and most of the guys there had a car that they loved and one that was more practical. (Large number of guys with kids who had a two-seater they refused to part with.)

(Of course now I am wondering exactly when car seats became mandatory, since I know it was a big deal for my parents to have one in '81 since they weren't required here yet. And if John was hunting while Sam was still too little to sit up there must have been a way to put one in Metallicar.... My head hurts now.)

No! I always fanwanked the Metallicar was Mary's (I know, big stretch, but its possible.) I think the best explanantion is that its Missouri's.

Didn't they put lapbelts in cars in 1968 onwards? I know the first carseats came out in the fifties, so some cars must have had belts, but compulsory belts was 1968 in the US.

Um, I have a '67 Impala with lapbelts in the front and the back and they are original equipment. But I guess they could have been optional. :) I am believing that the car in the comic is Mary's. They really have made to much of a show in canon about Metallicar belonging to John (not just the pilot. In Dead Man's Blood he says to Dean, "I didn't give you the car so you could wreck it." The asshat. LOL) to just make it disappear in the comic.

Right. Lapbelts became federally mandated from '68 on, but they were available in earlier years, and were probably standard equipment on some models, at least - my grandfather had a '66 Riviera that had them so I know they were factory installed in at least some GM cars prior to '68.

It'll be interesting to see if the comic addresses that car at all, and what they did with Metallicar. It would be incredibly stupid of them not to have it, since she was in the Pilot.

They can be retrofitted to any old car if you're more worried about safety than authenticity. Friend had to do that before her kids would let the grandkids ride in her old Camaro.

The latest Motortrend magazine as a small picture of the next version of the Impala. The boring little sedan is gone and the Bitch is Back! I think it said it would be out in 2009 and I'm not kidding, it looks tough.

Clever little feature on the beloved Metallicar.

If you think of Supernatural as a Greek tragedy (like I do because I am studying Classics and I see its influence EVERYWHERE) then Dean’s Impala is the silent third actor. I like to think of it like Pylades, steadily assisting Orestes in his revenge. Okay, the Impala isn’t that silent. But as it gently growls along the back roads of America (or Vancouver) doesn’t it make an amazingly satisfying real car noise and isn’t it refreshing for it not to be an SUV? You can’t move in prime time for SUVs so it is nice to have some retro eye candy.

Her boyfriend definitely. I love the two doors and the red walls. That's a bitchin' car. The love child of Metallicar and the El Camino (if it wasn't the EVIL Camino and they had had a date, and if cars could have love children).

hakirby, hee!

But I think that gorgeous red Impala would be the love child of Metallicar and this beauty. :)

ZOMG, guys, I was driving to Nashville the other day and while cruising down 840 I nearly had to slam on the brakes and pull over because right there abandoned on the side of the road was a live in-the-flesh Metallicar! Except it was blue, rusty, had a flat tire, and looked like a real clunker. Perhaps it was the weird uncle of Metallicar who always embarrasses the rest of the family at reunions...
