Help Topic: The TWoP Lexicon
Can you explain some of the terms I keep seeing, like "AFAIK" and "HoYay"? What does "blah blah fishcakes" mean?
What would the internet be without impenetrable slang and acronyms?
What would the internet be without impenetrable slang and acronyms?
- AFAIK: "as far as I know"
- Anvil/anvilicious: Used to indicate obvious or heavy-handed writing that has no regard for the viewer's intelligence, thus bludgeoning them over the head with parallels et al. in the manner of Wile E. Coyote and his Acme Brand anvils
- Asshat: One who has his/her head up his ass, thereby wearing said ass as a hat. E.g., "Fox executives are asshats for cancelling Futurama."
- ATM: "at the moment"
- Blah blah blah [fish]cakes: Roughly equivalent to "yadda yadda yadda."
- BTW: "by the way"
- ETA: "edited to add," used by people to show why they have edited their posts -- even though the forum shows the post has been edited -- in the mistaken belief that people care
- For God's sack: "For God's sake." "For God's sack" was a typo Sep made on another forum many of the TWoP recappers used to frequent, which has evolved into an expression we occasionally use on the site. It's not an error; it's a joke.
- FWIW: "for what it's worth"
- HoYay: short for "Homoeroticism, Yay!," a celebration of textual and subtextual homoeroticism
- IIRC: "if I recall correctly"
- IM(H)O: "in my (humble) opinion"
- ITA: "I totally agree"
- LOL: "laughing out loud"
- Mary Sue: A character who's just a little too perfect to be believed
- NSFW: "not safe for work"
- OMG: "oh my God"
- OT: "off-topic"
- RDC Challenge: The Rae Dawn Chong Challenge, the game in which an unusual word, phrase, or pattern was added to recaps by the recappers until someone on the forums noticed the trend. Named after the first unannounced round in which the phrase was "Rae Dawn Chong." The RDC Challenge was retired in 2002 and brought back in 2006.
- Ship/shipper: "Ship" is short for "relationship." If you are an X and Y "shipper," that's short for "relationshipper," i.e. you want those two characters to be together.
- [sic]: It is Latin for "so" or "thus." As the Oxford Canadian dictionary says, "The word sic is placed in brackets after a word that appears odd or erroneous to show that the word is quoted exactly as it stands in the original."
- Snark: sarcastic commentary
- Spork/sporked/sporkage: Derived from the camping utensil that combines a spoon and a fork, it's a term used to describe a moderator smackdown.
- TMI: "too much information"
- TPTB: "the powers that be"
- Word: expression of wholehearted agreement, '80s-style
- WRT: "with regard to"
- WTF: "what the fuck?"
- YMMV: "your mileage may vary"
- YOMANK: "you owe me a new keyboard"
