Torchwood: On What The Arse Represents (UK)

Soooo... they're doing a new 'adult' spin off of Doctor Who - upping it to 27 weeks a year of Whoey goodness!

http://www.bbc.co.uk/doctorwho/

The new show, Torchwood, will star John Barrowman as Captain Jack Harkness as he works in 21st century Cardiff alongside the Torchwood team set up by the British government (and presumably "Harriet Jones, PM, United Kingdom") to keep alien technology out of the public domain while using it themselves to solve out of the ordinary crimes. It's going to go out after 9pm so will be more adult in tone than Doctor Who, and presumably, the BBC won't be censoring Jack's arse anymore. I'm predicting "Spooks with aliens" myself.

One interesting element that have been revealed are the idea that Torchwood will operate under the UN's radar and will be trying to keep the alien tech for the UK itself, so it's possible there'll actually be a Torchwood vs UNIT arc at some point.

More speculative are the ideas some people have had that it'll be set in the two year hole in Jack's memory and that the Cardiff setting indicates that the Rift from the Doctor Who episodes The Unquiet Dead and Boom Town will act as a kind of Hellmouth -- pulling in the weird and the strange from thousands of miles around.

ETA:

Filming begins early 2006 for a Fall 2006 transmission date. The first foreshadowing of the new spinoff will be in the Doctor Who Christmas Special, where the existence of the Torchwood team will be namedropped, though they won't appear.

Well! Big news today, indeed!

My guess is that TBTB do not kill off Rose, but give her something really cool to move on to, and leave open the possibility of future visits.

I've heard that Cap'n Jack will be returning in S3, but will he be the only companion? K-9? I think it's a pretty good bet that Mickey will be back at some point, but I would guess just for an episode or two. I liked most of the cast of Impossible Planet/Satan Pit, so if they wanted to bring any of them back as companions, I think that would be nifty.

Doctor Who in the Media

I didn't see a media topic so I thought I'd start one. If this should go elsewhere, let me know, or perhaps a mod could move it.

Here's a nice piece from Sunday's NY Times - free, but registration required - about the new version of the show: Dr. Who 2: Sexed-Up British Intelligence.

Lucky Bastards: Season Two

(TV.com sucks for thread names: IMDB is better now for this sort of thing. (link, spoils titles for Season 2) )

Skipping Season 1 (2005) for a moment, I thought this was a pretty good intro for David Tennant, but it really lacked that initial post-regeneration moment. Then again, not all Doctors have had that benefit. Good work by the ensemble, though it appears that Rose has backslid a bit. Though perhaps she was just unsure about this Doctor and a bit more nervous. And a stunning turn for Harriet Jones, Prime Minister.

Outside the TARDIS: Cast Appearances in Other Roles

One of the nice things about the announcement of the new series was that, for the first time, I had heard of the actor playing the incoming Doctor. I knew Christopher Eccleston mainly as the bad guy in 28 Days Later. I thought his character was really evil and vile, so if you only know him as the 9th Doctor, you may want to check him out in that, if only to see Eccleston in a different light. I also knew him as Nicole Kidman's husband in The Others

Harry Potter fans will probably already know the face of the 10th Doctor, as David Tennant played Barty Crouch, Jr. in the most recent movie.

Some bits of DW casting trivia that I found interesting:

Peter Davison (the 5th Doctor) once appeared in an episode of Magnum, P.I., which thanks to DVD, I'll finally get to see one day.
Joseph Marcell, who played Geoffrey the butler on The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, was in "Remembrance of the Daleks".

I have to admit that I liked the Tenth Doctor more in the "Children in Need" short than I did "The Christmas Invasion".

The acting and the writing in CiN seem to "know" who the Tenth Doctor is whereas CI was all over the place, which I suppose can be chalked up to the fact that the CiN short was shot well after CI.

Doctor Who? Questions From New Viewers

I saw a teaser for this when I was watching Battlestar Galactica the other day, and it looked cool. I've heard of the show before (something about time travel? different versions of the same character or something?) and it sounded interesting, but I've completely forgotten what it was about. So what's the deal with this show? What's the premise? Is it about the adventures of a guy named Doctor Who, or am I being hopelessly naive? (for the longest time I thought the name of the ship in Firefly was "Firefly")
