The Old Top Chef Thread

So Mrs. Billy Joel is trying to be the next Gordon Ramsay in a new reality show on Bravo. Here's the press release. It doesn't say what the prize will be other than being named Top Chef. Bravo usually has good reality shows but this one sounds like a stinker.

KATIE LEE JOEL TO HOST 'TOP CHEF,' A NEW REALITY COMPETITION SERIES COMING TO BRAVO

PRODUCTION UNDERWAY IN SAN FRANCISCO IN THE SEARCH FOR THE NEXT TOP CULINARY TALENT

NEW YORK -- November 10, 2005 -- Bravo has signed on Katie Lee Joel to host "Top Chef," a new reality competition series set in the pressurized environment of world-class cookery and the restaurant business. The series will feature twelve aspiring chefs competing for their shot at culinary stardom and the chance to earn the prestigious title of "Top Chef." Scheduled to premiere next year on Bravo, principal photography for the ten-episode, one-hour series commenced October 24 in San Francisco. The announcement was made today by Frances Berwick, Senior Vice President of Programming, Bravo.

"Bravo is eager to discover exciting new talent in the culinary world, just as we did in fashion with 'Project Runway,' in film with 'Project Greenlight,' and comedy writing in 'Situation: Comedy,'" said Berwick. "We're delighted to have Katie Lee Joel as host. Her passion for excellent cuisine pushes our contestants to the top of their game."

Katie Lee Joel will host this inside look at the artistic and cutthroat world of the culinary arts. Married to music icon Billy Joel since 2004, Katie's lifelong passion for good food began when she first learned to cook from her grandmother while growing up in West Virginia. Today, she enjoys cooking meals with fresh, organic ingredients and strives to consume a diet that is both healthy and pleasing to the taste buds, while taking into consideration where every ingredient comes from. Katie's culinary experience is broad and diversified. She has taken a wide range of culinary classes, spent a semester abroad in Florence, worked in a variety of restaurants and helped open Jeff and Eddy's Restaurant, one of the hottest dining spots in the Hamptons. Katie also started the culinary website www.oliveandpeach.com with her friend Aleishall Girard, which was born out of their shared passion for the culinary arts and appreciation for the simple nourishment that makes up a daily meal. Katie holds a degree in English and Journalism from Miami University of Ohio.

"Top Chef" is executive produced by Dan Cutforth and Jane Lipsitz of Magical Elves, who also produced "Project Runway" and "Project Greenlight" for Bravo and will executive produce NBC's upcoming reality series "Treasure Hunters." Shauna Minoprio serves as co-executive producer on "Top Chef."

I have authentic Top Chef poop, my lovelies. I was loft hunting in downtown LA last weekend and the leasing agent at one of the buildings I went to told me that Top Chef rented their Penthouses and had started decorating them last Friday. So S2 will take place in downtown Los Angeles. This ought to be interesting; the gentrification of the downtown area is far from complete. You can have art galleries on one block and people openly smoking crack on the next.

Incidentally, I didn't take a loft in that building, but in one two blocks away, so I may have further reports.

Speculation without Spoilers

I've noticed that there's been a lot of speculation going on in seperate threads (such as the cheftestant threads, judge threads, and episode threads), and I thought it would be a good idea to have one main speculation thread as a lot of the other show forums have.

I'm going to start with tonight's episode, I suppose. I have a feeling that the most vulnerable people at this point are those who haven't "wow"-ed the judges--people who have been basically coasting in the middle. Marcel seems like he's pretty vulnerable, but I'm assuming that Frank's blowup at him isn't happening this episode, so I don't think he'll be going home.

S2 - Elia Aboumrad: So Long and Thanks for All the Tuna Juice

At 23, I thought she was going to be too inexperienced like Candace from S1 to seriously compete and that she was on the show to serve just as eye candy/cannon fodder. Although, in some shots, she's simply stunning and others, she's just meh. I think its the hair that really makes all the difference with how she looks.

But, looking at her CV, she brings more to the table than just a pretty face. At her young age, she's already earned 34 culinary degrees and trained in Robuchon's kitchen in Paris. But, its tough to know how much we should really be impressed by that since Bravo also claimed that she was the sous chef of L'Atelier de Joel Robuchon at the MGM Grand but that's since been changed to a less impressive Assistant Room Chef at The Hotel.

She's also got an interesting backstory, where she was more interested in medicine. But, before going off to school to study for that, she took a year off and discovered what she really wanted to do was cook.
