Ratings and Scheduling: Recall or Retention?

Samantha Who? will premiere on Monday, October 15 at 9:30 pm ET/PT. It is being given the prime post-Dancing with the Stars timeslot, which will hopefully boost its ratings, but at the same time could burden it with high expectations.

According to the Futon Critic back in May, when DWTS concludes at midseason the plan was to move Samantha Who? to 9:00 and bring back Notes from the Underbelly at 9:30. But this information could be obsolete at this point, or subject to change.

The show should be available in streaming video online at ABC.com the day after the premiere, beginning Tuesday, October 16.

Old Samantha Who Thread

ABC's newly-retitled comedy starring Christina Applegate. I was slightly interested in hearing about it during the upfronts, but when they recently changed it to "Untitled" or "?????" on the ABC website, I suspected that they had trouble getting clearance from the Dr. Seuss estate to use the name Sam I Am, and sure enough, Variety came to the same conclusion (ABC has no comment) : Seuss gives ABC sitcom new name.

Here is a description from the press release. It premieres Fall 2007-08, Mondays, 9:30-10:00 p.m. on ABC (shifting to 9:00 after Dancing with the Stars ends).

When a terrible accident leaves Samantha “Sam” Newly in a coma for eight days, she wakes up with no recollection of any past experiences, memories or events. Faced with amnesia, Sam must start over. To her dismay she discovers that she wasn’t a particularly honest, good-hearted or loving person. In fact she was self-involved, narcissistic and devoid of real relationships -- essentially a bitch. Sam must now struggle with her desire to be good and her temptation to be… not so good. Finding the line between good and evil is never easy. The series is from best-selling novelist Cecelia Ahern.

Cast:
Christina Applegate (“Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy”): Sam
Barry Watson (“What About Brian”): Todd
Jennifer Esposito (“Related”): Andrea
Kevin Dunn (“Prison Break”): Howard
Melissa McCarthy (“Gilmore Girls”): Dena
Tim Russ (“Without a Trace”): Frank
Jean Smart (“24“): Regina

Credits:
Story By: Cecelia Ahern & Donald Todd
Teleplay: Donald Todd (“Ugly Betty”)
EP: Donald Todd (“Ugly Betty”)
EP: Peter Traugott (“Frangela”)
Director: Robert Duncan McNeill (“Crossing Jordan”)
Production Company: ABC Studios

They used to have an extended preview available at ABC.com, but seem to have taken it off while they change the name and/or redo it.

Reactions after the upfronts and to the pilot screener have been generally positive. Based on the pilot script alone, Televisionary said it "intriguingly blends a mystery plot with its funnies." Based on the upfront presentation, IGN said "its mix of sweetness and edginess...might just work," and EW's Snap Judgment rated it a "Most Promising." Based on viewings of the pilot screener, New York Magazine's The Early Word said it's "worth a season pass," Alan Sepinwall found some of the supporting characters "way too broad," and the Futon Critic gave it a very positive 3 (out of 4) stars. Meanwhile, in Zap2it's Brill and Eric Watch TV podcast they thought the biggest problem is the "premise doesn't have a lot of legs."

I think Christina Applegate is a good comedienne, and ABC is probably banking on her to sell the show. As TV Squad reported from the upfronts:

[ABC president Steve] McPherson said that they tried hard to get a vehicle for Christina Applegate this season because she's a "brilliant talent that pops off the screen. She just nails this part," of a woman who wakes up from a coma with amnesia, and finds that the person she was before her accident wasn't a very good one. "She creates a real voice for the character, which I think is missing from a lot of comedies."

It's also nice to see Jean Smart from Designing Women and 24 in the supporting cast, and Jennifer Esposito was funny on Spin City. At any rate, it sounds better than any of ABC's other new comedies (Carpoolers, Cavemen, Miss/Guided) although my Mondays 9-10 timeslot is already crowded.
