UK/US Show Comparisons: Lost in Translation

A topic to discuss differences and similarities between the BBC's Ramsay's Kitchen Nightmares and Fox's Kitchen Nightmares.

It was probably naive to hope that Fox wouldn't muck with the formula too much, but they really rely on easy storyline and over the top editing, whereas the original Kitchen Nightmares was actually fairly staid. The Fox version is less an American Version of Kitchen Nightmares and almost a food version of Extreme Makeover: Restaurant Edition.

Difference include but are not limited to the unnecessary narrator who tells you what you already seeing on screen, the endless flash images of the Most! Dramatic! Moments! while ignoring the minor adjustments of running a restaurant that he's still undoubtedly doing, the magical bequething of a new kitchen rather than making the restaurant owners make the tough decisions that will save their restaurant, and the lack of the fact finding that was a staple of the BBC version. Trying to figure out why exactly the restaurant was failing was something of a detective story, in which Ramsay had to pound the pavement and interview people on the street exactly what was keeping them from going to the joint. They might still be doing that, but they didn't show it in the first episode, at least.

What's the same? I actually believe much of Gordon's behavior is the same. It's just that they didn't show the nitty gritty work in favor of an idiot yelling at people. I think the nitty gritty work was done, coming up with a new menu and putting the cooks through their paces, but it wasn't the focus of the first episode.

I don't think the US version will ever be the UK version, but I really hope they tone down the theatrics a bit. A guy nearly drunk himself to death on the UK version with less Dramuh! than the idiot Italian Stereotype Peter.
