This seemed to be the most popular name suggestion out there...

I've been a little disappointed with the lack of extra commentary on the most recent Starburst volumes. 2.3, I believe, didn't have any commentary tracks at all. 3.1 and 3.2, IIRC, didn't have any that previous box sets lacked. I mean, I appreciate the hell out of the Starburst discs, but it'd be nice for them to pack on a few more extras.

There are never enough Ben/Claudia commentaries, either. I'd love for them to do the whole series.

Castmembers in Other Roles: Uncharted Territories

So as we all know, Ben and Claudia have become castmembers of Stargate SG1.

I just have to say, I vehemently disagree with the people who are saying that Ben Browder is playing the same character on Stargate SG1 as he did on Farscape. About all they have in common is the fact that both are pilots (and for Crichton, piloting was secondary to other skills) and have contact with aliens.

Cameron Mitchell is first and foremost a soldier, and is actually a pretty laid back guy. In fact, he's sometimes almost too laidback, as he's not always interesting to me. John Crichton? Scientist first and foremost, and a big, giant SPAZZ and occaisional drama queen. I don't know. Maybe the differences are too 'subtle' for anyone to see. (snork)

I've heard that "the reason people say that is because Ben Browder will always be Ben Browder. That there's so much of him in his parts that it's easy for people to see them as the same. The character details that make them quite different are background noise when compared to the presentation of "IT'S BEN BROWDER!" that he puts forward. (quote from pseudopagan at LJ)

I disagree.

I do think the IBB!F (It's Ben Browder! Factor) may have influenced early estimations of the character, but after a time I was able to settle into accepting him as Mitchell. But as such, I immediately was established with the understanding that Cam isn't John and John isn't Cam, purely from the nuances of performance, especially in terms of line delivery.

The dynamic of how he works with Claudia in the context of scenes on Stargate fascinates me as well. Their connection is to intense and immediate even when they have her character paired off with Daniel. They have one particular exchange in 'Crusade' where for a minute the intensity (though NOT the characterization) of John and Aeryn was in the moment for me.

Farscape and Other Sci-Fi: I am not Kirk, Spock, Luke, Buck, Flash, or Arthur frelling Dent

We were talking about having a comparative sci-fi thread, so I went ahead and started it.

I was prompted to do so because it just occurred to me last night that John Crichton is Buck Rogers! I'm sure this isn't a revelation to most of you smart folks, but I had a "duh!" moment. Farscape is Buck Rogers in the 25th Century on acid! :-D

The revelation was prompted by viewing some of the cheese-tastic Gil Gerard Buck Rogers. Mr F has been watching the DVDs; he has a nostalgic fondness for the show, and he was telling me last night that he was surprised, upon watching it now as an adult, at how progressive some of its themes were, particularly with Wilma Deering, who's a colonel and a competent, kick-ass woman. (In the first season, at any rate. Apparently the show completely changes for the worse in the second season.)

It was the opening narration that really made me sit up and take notice of the similarities:

In the year 1987, at the John F. Kennedy Space Center, NASA launched the last of America's deep space probes. The payload, perched on the nose cone of the massive rocket, was a one-man exploration vessel - Ranger 3. Aboard this compact starship, a lone astronaut - Captain William "Buck" Rogers - was to experience cosmic forces beyond all comprehension. An awesome brush with death: in the blink of an eye, his life support systems were frozen by temperatures beyond imagination. Ranger 3 was blown out of its planned trajectory into an orbit a thousand times more vast, an orbit which was to return the ship full circle to his point of origin - its mother Earth - not in 5 months, but in 500 years.

Not all the details are the same, of course, but it had never struck me before how similar John Crichton's early story is to Buck Rogers'. While flying a one-man vessel for scientific purposes, an astronomical event blasts them into a strange new world: the future, for Buck, and another part of the universe, for Crichton. In their new circumstances, they make pop-culture references that no one understands; they use their unique knowledge to help their ostensibly more-advanced colleagues; they encounter a strong woman with whom they have a sorta, kinda, not really romatic relationship (at first, anyway).

I'm quite sure that the Farscape team were aware of the similarities. I'm just dumb sometimes, so I never picked up on it until now, and I get a kick out of it.

I've enjoyed a similar thing on an entirely different forum, so I thought I'd give it a try here.

It's pretty simple; vote your 4 (as of Round 69) least favourite episodes, and after both 24 hours have passed and at least 5 people have voted, the round will end, I'll tally up the votes, the episode with the most will be eliminated (with tiebreaker rounds as needed), and a new round will begin.
