Spoilers: Will there be some sort of scandal?

I watched the pilot and, for all the comparisons to Dynasty, it's really so much better than that. I mean, it has that rich-scandalous-family vibe, but it's also smart.

There is a mystery set up in the pilot (Nick's father's death was possibly at the hands of one of the Darlings) that I'm not sure will help or hinder the show. But I still have high hopes.

There are some funny one-liners, some outrageous plot lines that work in spite of themselves (William Baldwin's affair with the transvestite is definitely something unusual and cool), and the cast is superb. I especially think the twins will be comic relief, but there's plenty of funny to mine in the cheating, slimy reverend.

Ratings & Scheduling: Dirty Sexy Numbers

Unless you follow the industry closely, you may miss just how big this next note is, so a tiny bit of background...

One of the numbers that networks follow closely is "intent to view"--surveys of potential audiences which tracks what they say they intend to watch. Shows move up and down on this list frequently, and it's one way the networks measure the success of their buzz campaigns. It's also a clue to "sleeper hits"--if nobody in the press is talking much about a show but it makes the top 15 in "intent to view," it means there's either a lot of word of mouth or a dedicated core audience.

Bionic Woman has been leading "intent to view" most of the summer. But Private Practice (the lead-in to Dirty Sexy Money) has been #2 on and off. Since they air opposite each other, people can't watch both unless they're using TiVO, but both could score big.

James Hibbard at TV Week is reporting for Sept. 13 that not only is Private Practice back in a 3 way tie for 2nd, and Dirty Sexy Money in the top 10, but ABC's entire Wednesday night lineup is on the list. That's good news for DSM because, among other things, it means ABC is likely to do a lot of combined promos, which stretch the buzz budget.

Even if Bionic Woman wins the rating wars against Private Practice, it could be good for DSM if it means more people stay home to watch something on Wednesdays. Coming in in the clean-up spot at 10, it gets one more chance to pull in some of the theoretically bigger audience.

Of course, if everybody's watching on time-delay, it only makes a difference in the buzz budgets. But it still looks like less than 15% catch a show on DVR, although those numbers keep growing.

Dirty Sexy Media

Show and/or cast mentions in the media:

Spotlight on fall casting

Members of the family include the billionaire patriarch (Donald Sutherland) and his posh wife (Jill Clayburgh); an attorney general (Billy Baldwin) and his transgender girlfriend (Candis Cayne); a nasty Episcopal man of the cloth (Glenn Fitzgerald), hiding an illegitimate son; a thrice-married socialite (The Shield's Natalie Zea); a suicidal celebutante (The O.C.'s Samaire Armstrong); and a club kid (Nip/Tuck's Seth Gabel). Starting in Episode 4, Blair Underwood will appear as Darling archnemesis Simon Elder.

Wright is especially excited about the casting of Cayne, and he says the network is totally behind it. "She becomes one of the most sensible people on the show," he says. "I'm really proud that we get to take a person who's made a bold choice in terms of an alternative lifestyle and make them not just an onlooker or part of a joke but actually give the difference that they represent a real voice in the show."

ABC gets its hands on some Dirty Sexy Money

Unfortunately, despite such first-class actors as Sutherland and Clayburgh as the top Darlings, the family comes across as a comic book roman à clef, with each child representing some form of bad behavior you've read about in the tabloids.
The Dirty Sexy Money Survival Game

I think Dirty Sexy Money is one of the best new shows of the season, with lots of awesome elements, so I think it's perfect for its own... Survival Game !

The rules for Survival Games as they're usually played on TWoP forums are as follows. Each new game, the entries start with 15 points. You get 3 votes a day, on a calendar day as defined by your local time zone, not in a 24 hour period (so you could feasibly vote at 11:59 PM and then again two minutes later at 12:01 AM). The goal is to vote everything off until there's one "winner" (or "loser" if the game has a negative aspect), with each entry voted off listed at the bottom. Before halftime, you can vote ++ or --, and then after halftime (half or less than half the entries still in the game), you can no longer vote ++, just + or --. If there are a large number of entries (generally more than 50), the game may allow 4 votes up until halftime, to make the game go faster. That's about it !

The most obvious first game would be the characters. If one of your favorites is missing, feel free to add them at 15 points up until the first person is voted out. So... here we go !

Rev. Brian ++
Rebecca Colfax ++
Mei Ling --

Dirty, Sexy and Awesome
17 - Rebecca Colfax, Family Publicist
17 - Rev.
